I killed my computer:  HELP!

I have a dual 1ghtz powermac G4 with a 160GigaByte Array (two 80 Gigs), the 80 gig boot drive and another 120 Gig drive next to the boot drive. I removed the 120 to see if I could put it into my new G5 (which I could not). I did everything by the book. After removing the 120Gig drive, my computer (the G4, not the G5) would no longer turn on. The start button lights when I press it, but NOTHING happens. The hard drive doesn't budge. I tried putting the 120 gig back into the G4, but still, nothing. What did I do? Did I kill it? What can I do? Help!!!

Make sure that the jumpers on your 80 GB are set to
master only or cable select when the 120 is removed.
With the 120 in the system, set the boot drive to
master with slave (cable select never works for me
with a slave drive). Also, make sure the power cable
to the hard drives are completely inserted
I hope that helps and is not too confusing!
Thanks and good luck
I don't know what jumpers are. Are those things I can set inside the computer? Because, as I said, I can't turn my computer on right now. Thanks for the help though.

  • 10.5.5 killed my computer

After installing 10.5.5 last night everything went fine through this morning. This afternoon the computer froze and refuses to restart. The screen stays blank on restart and nothing boots. You can hear the disc spinning and the fan running but nothing ever appears on the screen, even the power seems to be missing from the screen!

10.5.5 completely killed my computer as well, and just 1 hour ago I figured out how to fix it! I'm happy i fixed it, and ****** at how stupid this update was!
_The bottom line is_: the symbolic link to /private/etc was missing from it's usual /etc, so I recreated it in single user mode.
ie. Boot while holding Apple-S. When it's done, type
+mount -uw /+ (as it tells you to do if you want to be able to edit your drive), then type
+ln -s /private/etc /etc+ (to create the symbolic link), then
    exit (to continue booting)
    _The whole story is_:
Did the update via automatic Software Update, seems like everything went fine, computer restarted etc. a while later, I went to open Terminal and got the wierdest error: "You are not authorized to run this application: The administrator has set your shell to an illegal value." This error was from Within Terminal, ad the only button is "Quit". Unfortunately I can't go and check my /etc/shells file to make sure my shell is "legal" (w.t.f.?), because I can't open terminal... brilliant.
I sync my Phone (Moto L6) via bluetooth, and restart the computer. I eat dinner while it's booting, and notice it's on the grey Apple screen with a spinny thing going around, the typical first screen after booting.
after dinner, I take a look and it's still doing that, after maybe 1 hour.... bizarre.
Turns out I couldn't boot. Tried my leopard CD, booting while holding "C" (to boot from CD) and it would get past the grey screen, show a blue screen with a mouse, and then the mouse would disappear and the spinny thing would show, then the spinny thing disappears and the mouse shows up.... and this continues for eternity (presumably).
Tried booting from my Tiger CD: same. Panther CD: same. Zapped PRam (nvram) 3 times and re-tried CD and or/ normal booting, all in various orders, and NEVER got any further. I couldn't believe that somehow I couldn't boot from CD!
Looking at Verbose Mode didn't help, the loading just stopped after the ethernet and airport were loaded, (no errors) and didn't go any further, I assumed SystemStarter or WindowServer or something was opening (of course not logging or displaying itself) and dying. I assumed that launchd was trying to restart a crashed WindowServer/SystemStarted, adn that's why I got the mouse/spinner cycle.
I even unplugged all my USB and Firewire devices and retried everything (CD booting, nvram zapping etc. in various orders), to no avail.
In the mean time I notice that my cellphone's iCal syncs are all totally out of whack. Every event is off by 7 hours, almost my time difference to GMT, and it's completely messing with me, with alarms going off 5 hours too late to remind me of anything.
This all occurred over 2 days of kinda trying, but not really wanting to waste time fixing my ******** computer.
    3rd day:
Finally I did the painful approach, starting with Apple-S (single-user mode), and within 10 minutes of rooting around, while trying to access /etc/bashrc I noticed that /etc was not a directory. /private/etc still was.
So a quick +ln -s /private/etc /etc+ (while still in single-user mode, after the customary +mount -uw /+) and booted and suddenly the system works.
I also noticed that my ~/.bashrc was missing... did Apple go and mess with all my settings during a routine 0.0x upgrade? ridiculous!
It's a possibility that something else removed my /etc symlink, but nothing else was installed, no wierd scripts ran, no cron jobs or anything, really that update was the only thing done to my computer, and I only noticed because I couldn't open the terminal.
That was a gigantic waste of my time. After seeing all the 10.5.5 complaints and stupid problems on these boards, I remember why I don't install automatic updates until they've been around for at least a month (giving Apple time to release a new live-beta-tested version!).

I accientally synced my iPhone to 2 different computers. Now my older apps are on one computer and new apps are on another.  Every time I try to sync all apps on one computer it takes the other apps of and just syncs what is on that computer - Help please
I cannot for the life of me figure this out.

What you need to do is connect your phone to iTunes but do not click sync.  Go to File at the top and click transfer purchases from phone, that'll put all your apps into iTunes.  When it's done transferring, locate your phone on the sidebar and click it.  Then find the apps option above the picture of your iphone, you can select which apps you want or don't want on your phone.  After selecting your apps then you can sync.  Once you do this you should never have your problem anymore.

    First:
    - See:
    iPod touch: Hardware troubleshooting
    - Try another cable. Some 5G iPods were shipped with defect cables
    - Try another charging source
    - Inspect the dock connector for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
    - Make an appointment at the Genus Bar of an Apple store.

Nothing works at all. When I spilled the coffee I shut it down, unplugged everything, turned it over and put paper towels beneath it to drain. Made the mistake of turning it back on after a couple of hours. It worked but emitted strange noises from the internal speakers. Turned it back off, but have not been able to turn it back on since. I disassembled the entire macbook yesterday, found coffee stains on the keyboard components. Tried to turn it on and get nothing. The only sign of life is the battery indicator. When I press the button the series of green lights come on, but that's it. Thanks for your responses. Jaylloyd

Since I downloading the new FireFox, it crashes every hour or so, then will keep crashing when I try restart it. Only restarting my computer helps, but then it will crash again. 90% of the time, when sending crash report(s), a mesage that there was a problem sending it appears. my iphone 4 doesnt show up in itunes. it is also locked on the 'connect to itunes screen' when unplugged from the computer. help me!

    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.
If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:

  • HT1420 when i open Itunes there is no where that says authorize my computer  help???

When I open Itunes there is no where that says Authorize my computer Help?????

There's a couple of ways to get through to the authorisation controls in the 11.0.x versions.
The control is still in the Store menu, but first (if you're using iTunes versions 11.0.x) you might need to bring up the menu bar to see the Store menu.
If you're using 11.0.x, click on the wee boxy icon up in the top-left corner of your iTunes to see the "Show Menu Bar" control, as per the following screenshot:
Then you'll find the control in the Store menu:
Alternatively, if you don't want to bring up the menu bar, it's still possible to get into the authorise controls via nested menus accessible from the wee boxy icon. Here's a screenshot of where to find them:

I am getting no sound on my macbook pro. The sound does not play when I plug in headphones either.  I have tried making it louder quieter, restarting my computer, HELP!

There are many possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried.
    1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article. Don't skip any of the steps. It's the starting point for further efforts to solve the problem.
    2. If your model has an audio-out (headphone) port, and anything is plugged in, unplug it before putting the system to sleep.
    3. If you've installed something called "Memory Clean" or any other third-party software that is supposed to "clean" or "purge" memory automatically, remove it according to the developer's instructions and reboot. You should do that even if the software is not causing the problem, because it's useless.
    4. If you've installed an equalizer called "Boom" or anything similar, update or delete it and reboot.
    5. If an AirPlay device is selected for sound output from iTunes (or from other applications via third-party software such as "Airfoil"), deselect it.
    6. Launch the application "Audio MIDI Setup" by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search and selecting it in the results (it should be at the top.) Select the Output tab. If the Mute boxes are checked, uncheck them. Move the Volume sliders all the way to the right.
    7. If a red light is coming from the audio-out port, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by your warranty.
If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.
    8. Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard and mouse, if applicable. If more than one display is connected, disconnect all extra ones. Reboot and test.
    9. Boot in safe mode. Don't log in; just reboot as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.
    10. Reset the NVRAM.
    11. Reset the SMC.
    12. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data. For a possible shortcut, see this thread.
    13. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

i restored my ipod touch .bt again it display as"ipod is disabled.connect to itunes'wht shall i do nw.i wanna get it back.i restored nt in my computer.help me to solve this problem !!!

You have to restore the device within iTunes. You want to use the same computer that you always sync with so that you can restore your app data and settings. You can restore with any other computer, but you will lose everything on the iPod.
Take special note of the article about using recovery mode. Many times, that is the only way to bypass the pass code and restore the device.

If you cannot restore that way, you may have to use recovery mode.

  • Everytime I open FFox I find over 400 cookies on my machine despite clearing history, deleting them etc - please help me eliminate them I think they are killing my computer!

Thank you for the opportunity to submit this query and hurray for the volunteers who will tackle it! Thank you!
on opening FFox, I routinely run Tools/View Cookies and clear my Error Console. I INVARIABLY find over 400 cookie directories arranged in two "lists". I clear them with Delete All Cookies and carry on.
I have tried limiting cookie access (ie: no 3rd party), and I have cleared my History including Cookies, BUT everytime I open FFox, they are all back!
I have even installed a Mozilla Cookie Killer plug-in, but though it may work, the little buggers are back the very next time I open FFox.
I believe their presence is seriously degrading my old but much loved Dell Inspiron 6400's performance and I would dearly love to be able to remove them permanently.
If you could help I would be very grateful.
    Cheers and best wishes,

That's going to be a ridiculous waste of money and energy.
First of all, the current ATI drivers don't support multiple GPUs, so at the moment even a single 4870X2 would be only a 'normal' 4870 (which is quite a speed beast already). GFX drivers evolve rapidly, so things might look different next month, but when it comes to Linux and hardware there's one Golden Rule: stay away from the newest stuff and wait for proper support to get coded.
I also wonder what power supply could possibly cope with the differences between idle and full load; that's way beyond 400W. But then, I'm one of those "quiet&green" types where >100W idle is already a bit much.
I kind of understand that you want to get it done and not worry about hardware for the next 10 years or so, but that's simply not how the hardware world works and never did. At least not for the average consumer.
