I love this thing and hate it....

I got this IPOD 5g early for Christmas and it has been the coolest toy and the biggest headache....
First....why is there no manual for this thing? Why do I have to download it from the site and take up memory on my hard drive.
I wanted the IPOD so I can free up the memory on my hardrive since I was sold on the 30G harddrive thing....I am guessing this is not the case!
I downloaded all my songs and videos to the IPOD.....I needed to free up some space on the harddrive and deleted laptop copy since I had it on my new IPOD... well at the next update...I lost all of it on my IPOD!
Is there anyway to get it back or am I just screwed? I am so upset. I lost over 2 gigs of stuff!!!
Do I have to have the original files on my laptop forever?
This is sooooo frustrating!
Ipod 5G Windows 2000

As mentioned your files might be revcoverable from the recyle bin if and only if it wasnt emptied or secured emptied. In the wayy of rother recovery you will have to get the files back onto your computer. You can not alow this to occur by making a backup copy of all your files and manually managing your music library. Or simply store them on your laptop or a external harddrive. In the wway of downloading the manual from the site well remember you are saving trees and the environment! =)
Besides the digital manual size is negligle considering other files that are larger on your computer.Dont sweat it.
Its only frustrating becuase you didnt know of this occuring prior to doing it. We all malke mistakes this certainly isntthe worst thing possible.

    Do you mean Bluetooth?
If you are trying to activate your iPhone you need to use iTunes.
There's no need to "pair" an iPhone with a Mac. Syncing, restoring, backing up, apps/ music / photos etc., is all done with iTunes.

If you are getting an error message then what is the full text of it ?
The temporary store holding charge is standard, it should disappear within a few days or so.

After opening my yahoo mail window, I keep getting a very short and narrow dialogue box with the words "log into Xmarks" I cannot ... when it pops up, always upper left of my laptop screen and I try to get into my yahoo mail web page, I get a DING sound and cannot enter it ... everything is frozen. I have to hit CNTRL + ALT + ESC to get rid of it - and then reload my Firefox browser to get back to my yahoo e-mail page ... fortunately for me, Firefox re-stores a previous session ... How can I get rid of this intrusive thing, and what is it? Thanks in advance ... Ted Beaudoin, Welland, ON, Canada

  • First day with this thing and I give up...

I have to say I was really excited to get this Time Capsule today, but I can't get it connected to the internet for the life of me.  I've tried everything...and I'm starting to regret the purchase.  I have Optimum online and currently use a NetGear router, with no issues.  I've gone through the set up process 20 times now with the Time Capsule, I tried using any setup I can imagine, but I still cannot get connected to the internet with this thing.  If anyone has any info they can lend I would appreciate it.  I'm ready to return this thing.

I have no problems running TC with windows computers. but it needs to be setup correctly.
I want you to go about this in a different way.. cable modems normally register the MAC address of the router and do not readily give it up.
Please unplug the TC from power.. press in the reset button.. power on, still holding in reset.. wait until front led flashes rapidly. Release the reset.. and allow it to finish booting. That is full factory reset btw.
Please turn off the cable modem and leave it off for 15min.. to allow the lease to expire from the old router.
Then power on the cable modem.. wait 2min.. power on the TC.. plugged in by ethernet to wan port, ie the port next to USB, with sunburst symbol.
Start up the computer plugged by ethernet into the LAN port of the TC.. ie any of the three ports marked <--->
Open the airport utility.. go to manual setup.. on the main summary page check what the IP address of the wan port is. It has to be a public ip.
Now check the PC ethernet address by opening a command prompt and typing ipconfig /all
Please note the full ip address, gateway and dns address you are given.
Please ping a website.. and see if there is a response..
You can start with the public address of the TC and the dns address of the ISP. If they fail the issue is maybe the firewall on the computer.. or computer has switch to different setting, work or public location instead of home.
Turn off ipv6 in both the TC and the windows .. that only makes it harder.
If you get some progress.. remember SMB names are short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric.. by default apple names have spaces.. please change both the name of the TC and the wireless to SMB compatible.

  • I love this thing!  BUT...it's completely frozen!

I just get this delivered after waiting and waiting and WAITING! I get it out of the fine packaging, I have iTunes 5.0, iPod Updater 09-06-2005, all the latest drivers and POOF!
I followed the ritual, I plugged in the USB Cable first THEN attached the nano AND it froze. Completely froze and I didn't even get to use it!
I've tried different systems, plugging into the USB Wall Charger, NOTHING!
Who is willing to volunteer and help me, somebody HELP ME, PLEASE!
And please don't tell me I have to send it back, please.

That's exactly how mine is too. It's powered on and frozen. I thought of the same thing, to reset it and nothing is working at all. I hope we're able to get a brand new replacement - I'm NOT taking a refurbished if there are any anyway!
What is this, NO VOLUNTEERS willing to help out fellow iPod obsessed user's in dire need of an iPod fix, I am in need of that iPod RUSH. • OK, retracting my recommendation--this thing is too HOT!!!

IS anyone getting a refund for the heat issue?
I raved about this MacBook on here before but whoa did I speak too soon. This thing is so hot--wayyyyy hotter than my rev. A 12" powerbook. I mean forget using it when the power adapter is plugged in.
I don't just mean on your lap...I mean for prolonged typing, even when it's sitting on a desk.
I thought the main reason for the Intel switch was because the faster PowerPC chips were too hot in a laptop. But this Intel chip is scorching! Unbelievably hot!

your macbook is probably defective if it runs so hot that you cant even type on it! mine usually isnt too hot. i think idle its around 50s and when i start web surfing and doing other things it goes up to around 60s to 70s. normally, it gets warm on the back left side, but not so hot that it would burn me.
today however, when i was installing windows xp and ms office through parallels, and burning a lot of discs, i noticed that the back left got MUCH hotter than the normal "warm". it was so hot that i could barely hold it for a few seconds before i had to set it back down. whats odd is that coreduotemp only registered a temperature of around 69-72 degrees. i guess all the heat of the processor was being pushed out? i dunno...
i think im going to take mine back to return it and wait until apple deals with these issues. so the problems with my mac so far:
    1) buzzing/whining power brick (on the brick and on the connection to the macbook)
    2) extreme heat when doing optical drive intensive tasks
    3) the moo sound
dont get me wrong, i love this machine and parallels is very cool with virtue desktops, but i just really dont want to be bothered by the moo/while/buzz/heat when im all alone in my tiny apartment in japan for a year where i probably cant even explain my situation to/understand the genius at the store in japan!
i hope you are still within the 14day exchange/return period so you can take yours in too!

  • This thing is becoming a veritable nightmare to me, the MOM !!!!!

Hi there all of you expert pod users, as you can most likely tell, I am the mother of two very proud ipod nano first timers!!! Jolly ol' St. Nick was overly generous this year and had to bring two, which in essence to me, the MOM, means twice the nightmare, twice the problems, and twice the $$$$$$ for the extras involved, okay, now my problem--
When i installed the disk that came with it, everything went ok, surprisingly to myself, who is NOT computer savvy at all. OK, now when we got the itunes lists downloaded or whatever you call it, into the pods themselves, soon after the battery went quite low and we had to "recharge", alright, now there is a small symbol on the pod screen saying "do not disconnect".....our problem is when is it safe to disconnect this thing, and how do you do it properly??? I have read and read and re-read those instructions and have come up with nothing that resembles a symbol such as what they are telling me to find in my "source list" I actually just took the USB port out manually even though it still said "do not disconnect" What is the appropriate manner in which we should be doing this???--can someone please help me, my hair is already slightly graying and I really don't need it to become totally gray over an ipod----please please please help me
compaq presario   Windows XP   brand new computer, bought in August 05

    Hello Themomofthepodsowners,
The "Do Not Disconnect" and the symbol that you are seeing means that the song/photo files are being transferred or, it is connected to the computer and being charged. If you look in iTunes "Source" window and see the iPod icon flashing, that means that files are being transferred. Once it stops flashing, you can eject the iPod by pressing the eject next to the iPod icon.
For more information on battery status, take a look at this:

I should also mention that for first time use, charge the nano for at least 3 hours or more.

  • EZ100 16gb what's with this thing????

%[ Okay, bought one of these the other day to replace my iPod 4gb nano, not that there was anything wrong with it, I just want a new player with bigger storage capacity and I went for the Mozaic EZ00 because Argos were selling it for ?69. So, I get it home, charged it up, updated it to the latest firmware and then piled on the music. This is were it seems to go so wrong!!! I'm not impressed at all with the sound quality of this thing, and I was using my expensi've in ear earphones, also the quality of photos and album art is just atrocious, and this is the killer punch...it just keeps on sticking and skipping during playback of every single track!!! I went into recovery mode, did a disc clean up, even reformatted it and again put the music on only this time it only plays the tracks fine when the unit is locked!!!! So, what's with this thing?? This is my first experience of a Creative product and I fear it may be the last, not impressed, will be taking it back to Argos. Anyone else had similar problems?

    (seasons) greetings all!
so out of the blue I get a nano for Christmas (it's blue ;-)) and the person who bought it is in windows but new I ran mac.
unfortunataly he did not know i needed a mac newer than my 3 year old ibook. after years of hearing my boasts of superior macs i hesitate to tell him i cannot use my new gift until i buy a new ibook/macbook... whatever.
i don't really have a question for this post but just wanted to add my comments. what a scam that to get the latest in a music listening gadget your get sucked into the itunes 7 mandantory hence osx.3 mandantory hence your 3 year old still viable and beloved ibook is impotent.
can't believe this may force me to buy a new laptop when there is no other reason. mac products should not have a lifetime of just a few years.
hope everyone else can enjoy their wonderful new mac holiday gifts... i cannot

  • K8N Diamond Plus: I LOVE THIS MB!!

I'm not a huge overclocker...but I soon will be. Sorry i just had to give major props to msi this time around..im spending way too much time with this thing and my gf is getting jealous

Mine is being a major pain in the arse!
It refuses to recognize my Corsair XMS PC3200 memory as anything but DDR333.  I've tried tinkering around with the BIOS several times but it either locks up (thank god for the CMOS reset switch) or doesn't change anything when I reset the frequency (by the way what the heck is with the numbers after the 133, 166, 200mhz, etc. options under the manual memory timings?  The ones that say "us" after them.  Is that microseconds?).  I've even tried overclocking it through the BIOS with no luck and then I tried overclocking it in Windows with Ntune (which MSI seems to have butchered support for) and finally with Corecell which is being stupid and won't let me do any overclocking but the D.O.T options.  I had the K8N Neo2 Platinum a while ago and I had control over the FSB with Corecell on that motherboard.  When I try to adjust the memory frequency in the BIOS it just gives me ratio options.  When I set it to 1/1 with a 200mhz FSB it STILL only runs at DDR333.  I'm not even allowed to force the damn thing!  Also, all of those smaller memory timings are nice to have, but I don't understand them all and it forces you to set some of them to settings other than auto if you want to, say, change the command timing from 2T to 1T (which I still haven't been able to do without a lockup).  On top of that, the SPD is detecting different timings EVERY TIME I RESET CMOS.  I seriously need a newbie mode where it just lets me adjust the 4 standard timings (my memory supports 2,2,2,5 at DDR400 in dual channel but this motherboard doesn't friggin' understand that!), frequency, voltage, and command timing, but instead I have to deal with all of these obscure timings that I've never heard of, and when I get them wrong I have to start all over again.  The documentation is sparse at best and the amateur English that MSI speaks in all of their documentation is infuriating.  I swear my purchasing decisions will be based on comprehension of the English language by the company that I'm purchasing from rather than actual product quality in the future.
I'm about to go nuclear...  I'm going to do some browsing here as I assume that I'm not alone on this issue?
No signature yet so here are my system specs:

OMG buddy !!  R U KIDDING ME....why the **** would u even get this board if you dont even know the first thing about overclocking....i suggest you educate yourself first then start asking questions...I think this board is too big for your britches...you should definitely stick with a nice and simple intel board especially if you dont even know how to put the ram into dual channel mode(do a search buddy its there!! the search button on the top of this page isnt just for looks!!!).....geeez how do you expect to do anything else..i'm just scared that you'll fry your board before you even get a  chance to enjoy it...i have the same board and  have no problems running 2 gigs pc 3200 (running dual channel), using ntune, manipulating the FSB or anything else...what the hell r u doing using core cell to overclock ...if your going to over clock dont pussy around fiddling with that thing...Do everything manually!! ...get cpuz get everest or something ...OMG ... PLEAASE for the sake of the board DO SOME RESEARCH

  • I hate this Thunderbolt and I can't take it anymore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm a POWER phone user (but I don't root or jailbreak). If I want to watch a Youtube vid, it had better come up. If I want to sream a radio station, it had better buffer and play, when I want to check something out on a website, it had better come up for me. Otherwise, why not just buy a basic phone? I can do all this other stuff from home. But I don't have TIME at home. I only have time when I'm out and about. So...if my phone doesn't live up to the hype, It just makes me all the more angry.
This Thunderbolt reboots all the time AND loses it's data connection, even after the update. I'm hoping Gingerbread OTA comes out today as planned.
But I have a theory as to why this is happening.
I think It has something to do with the networks and Andriod and isn't specific to VZW or the Tbolt. My buddy now lives in a 4G market and never has any issues. He's with Sprint and has their Droid X equivilant. His phone will rarely and only reboot when he's in this area (Kokomo, IN) and he just got Gingerbread and says it really improved battery life.
I drive 30miles one way to work. There are many routes I can take, but they are all rural. Kokomo is a hodge podge of crap networks. We're 3G, EV, 1x, etc. So nothing lasts long when driving as you'll drift in and out of the various networks all the time. And my phone will almost always reboot when I'm driving, and with no rhyme or reason, consistancy, etc. If it doesn't reboot (which I'm convinced isn't a heat issue either), it will at least lose it's data connectivity. Sometimes It comes back on, but most of the time I have to pull the battery. In the Driod forum, many others have said the same thing, and that a refurb replacement didn't help. So, I don't think it's the phone, but rather how Android handles networks.
I haven't checked... but do other Android phones reboot and lose data like mad? I was surprised when my non-VZW buddy told me his Droid X w/ Sprint rebooted yesterday. For a period of time after the last update, my data connection was fine, but rebooting startedh happening all the time. I don't think my phone rebooted once prior to the last update. My iPhone friends never talk about any of these issues... or any issues to be honest.
Which brings me to this... I was so excited to get this phone. It was my first Droid phone and I chose it over the iPhone only because I had plans on getting an iPad 2. I already have an iPod Touch. So I am stacked full of app's. If I'm in a 4G area, (which is hardly ever), the phone seem to peform fine. I came from a Blackberry Tour 9630, which I thought was the worst phone ever. But this one is JUST as bad, and one of the worst decisions I've made in a long time. I love many things about Andriod and this phone, but I spend more time in forums looking for solutions, (while holding back the desire to smash the phone to bits), than I do using it. I basically dream even using the phone anymore because it will always infuriate me at some point. One more ill-timed reboot is going to make me snap (It's not like my Blackberry, but not exaclty a fast booter either!).
And what stinks is that I'm stuck with it until the end of 2012! Plus, I've invested in an extended life battey and a skin. It's annoying how few aftermarket products are avail for this phone to be honest. Battery life is dreadful, so an extened battery is a must. God forbid Otterbox release a case that fits an ext life battery too. It's not going to happen. So, I'm stuck wiith skins, which is fine.
Also, the charge jack is located in the DUMBEST spot ever. Do you think I'll ever see a good cradle that allows me to watch movies or whatever in landscape mose while charging? I bet not. Yes, I know they make some, but none are any good. I quite simpley I hate this phone and regret buying it. I've been with Verizon for a LOOOONG time too.
I went to the local store, and they are all really cool and nice, but acted like I was supposed to live w/ the reboots and loss of data. Someone there always grabs the phone and checks it out, making sure the settings are correct, and hands it back. I want a phone that works!!! God forbid they let me get a different phone. I'll even pay my insurance ded of $99 to get out of this phone.
If I call tech support, they are going to want to do my SECOND hard reset, which is a pain to get up and running again. My gmail addy book is dialed in, so I'm good there. But a hard reset won't work, because it doesn't work for anyone else. A refurb phone will do the same thing, and so will a new. Besides, I bet half of those refurbed phones are from rebooting problems anyway! If I march down to the VZW store, they'll tell me to wait till the OTA update hits to see if that works, which it might. But I've read that people who have rooted their phones and got the update say it's better, but still has some issues and quirks. I've been trying all day to get the update, but I bet that they haven't even released it. I need to check. Last time I got an OTA update, I had to get it in the middle of the night.
My point is.... i'm in cell h--- in this area. We are a 3G city, but if you go any direction out of the city, you start getting into to Centennial Wireless territory, and they are a giant thorn in the side to all major cell companies. They won't let go of a particular area and because of it, Kokomo will likely have ghetto 4G. At least for me, because I'll be far away from the tower. Plus, I live on the south edge of town. So, as I travel south to Indy, I'll have weak 4G, and then get into North Indy's weak 4G until I get closer to the city. Then it's FAST!! Good 4G service is unreal. I'm just regurgitating what a VZW rep told me. I'm just repeating it all back with some "hatred" mixed in.
So, I don't know what to do. Call Tech Support? Beg for a refurb that likely won't work? I could file an insurance claim since I have a legit reason. Sweat got under the display and won't go away. It's not bad, but it's not perfect. The people at the VZW store told me that I really need to get a Bluetooth headset, esp if I sweat a lot. I also put the phone in the crook of my neck a lot and talk while working. This almost always hangs up the call. Very irritating!!
They also told me at the store that if I go thru Insurance and pay my $99 ded, I MAY have a chance to talk them into letting me get a different phone of equal or more value but i'll have to really sell the idea. And if so, I'm going iPhone 4. Period. I don't think it's necc better than my Tbolt, but it's reliable, I have tons of app's for it already, and I'm a Mac user anyway. It just makes sense. Otherwise, there is NO CHANCE i'll be able to talk VZW into getting me out of this phone, even though none of these issues were present while I had the return policy. Only after did it start to do all of these weird things.
It sounds like I'm complaining about the Tbolt just to get the iPhone and I'm not. I'm upset because using my phone is a horrible experience as it's either slow, has a horrible connection most of the time when I'm driving, and is only useful on Wifi. Maybe a different phone will be no better and I'm just cursed to live in a bad market? VZW was supposed to the be the best though, so switching probl won't help me.
Not sure what to do exactly... so I will probl wait to see if anyone has any suggestions. I hate to be so negative, but I'm likely SOL, and that's really sad. VZW has been very good to me over the years, but i don't see how this will end well for me.

You know something ironic? I tried to respond to this using my Thunderbolt and the stock browser, and I couldn't type anything in this box! HA!! I'm doing this from the web.
Anyway, doing the *#*#4636#*#* thing did the trick. I'm now running CDMA (PRL), and only have had one reboot in two days. Usually I would have like 10. This totally confirms that it's something with the brains of the Tbolt that can't handle hand-off's on non-4G networks. In fact, in the past my phone would be in 3G mode, then when a 1x handoff needed to happen, my phone would either not hand off to 1x at all, or it would simply LOSE it's data connection. I watched my signal on my trip home yesterday, and it would easily switch in and out of 3G and 1X. As I said, I'm in "cell hell" here, so I bet I change from 1x to 3G at least 4 times in a 30 mile radius either direction.
So, for VZW store employees to tell people we'll be 4G before the end of year, is just a ploy to cell the new phones. Even if Kokomo goes 4G, it's only good if you never leave town! If half the state is still 1X, then what hope is there that most places will be 4G?
I don't understand, outside of sheer cost, what the problem is making 1x Towers 3G or 4G capable? Are these towers privately owned? Is it up to the owner to fork over the money? Why would they do that for the convenience of minority 4G users if 1X and 3G works "Ok"? It should be manditory. And there are towers ALL OVER THE COUNTRY, so I can only imagine the expense involved. But still, these companies have a responsibility to stay current. Otherwise, someone else will come along with a totally dialed in network and they'll lose business. I'm starting to think VZW is getting so big so fast that they can't keep up.
verizon has the largest network. they have the fastest network. what more can they do? yes, they focus on major markets, but that's because that is where they make money. they aren't a public utility. they are a for profit corporation. their coverage speaks for itself. they pay WAY more attention to the rural areas than any other carrier.....but it's just bad business to throw ten towers in a spread out rural area that will cover a few thousand people....when they can use 9 of those towers in an area that will cover 200,000 people. their LTE network is 10 times faster than sprint's "4g" and they are banking on domintaing the market with it, just like they did with 3g. keep in mind that they launched the first LTE areas only 6 months ago and this is still very new technology.
for the record though, i mostly keep mine in 3g right now, as it is much better on my battery. i switch it to 4g if i'm not near wifi and want to browse or download something. i'm in a strong LTE network and i do believe this LTE network will blow the other carriers out of the water. my 3g incredible speed tests at the same rate as my friends' EVO's on sprint's "4g" netowrk. (just under 2 mbps). no reboots, but i didn't install they update back in may.

As a developer, I have been working with Crystal since version 5. Currently on v8.5, not moving further because of existing projects and the number of issues with CR10-XI that I don't like. My feelings to Crystal have always been contradictious. It is a great and powerful tool for doing things, better than any other reporting software I know. But there are certain weaknesses that you will soon encounter if you work with Crystal every day.
I decided to write down things I hate about Crystal, in a faint hope that someone has a workaround I'm not aware of. Needless to say, I have checked Knowledge Base for all problems below, but there was no solution. Couldn't find a solution in forums either.
    1. MOST ANNOYING: Cannot move multiple columns with column headers left or right simultaneously. My reports are carefully aligned by using guidelines. Usually there are no empty spaces between the fields. When I have to insert a new columns to the left part of the report, I have to manually move existing columns to the right to make space, one by one, by pulling guidelines. What a pain with 60+ columns, each column has its precise width that needs to remain the same. I really hate it about Crystal. In Microsoft Reporting Service, swapping fields is a breeze, just drag-and-drop column variable and it will be moved along with its header, preserving its width and the widths of other columns. (no solution)
    2. MOST ANNOYING: It is very difficult to find where a user variable or database field is referenced, in case we need to delete some unneeded variables. A variable or a field can be in use by another variable, or conditional formatting forumula, or a selection formula, or sorting, or running total, or other. The reference of a variable can be located by changing the data type returned by this variable and observing the error message. But no solution for finding reference of a database field. (no solution)
    3. MOST ANNOYING: if I have some groups in my reports, with all the data and conditional formatting, and I need to add yet another group that should become the most outer group, then I need to manually move down all the data and formattings for existing groups one by one, to free up the outer group, because Crystal can only add the inner group, not the outer one. (no solution)
    4. Cannot place running totals results for a group into group header. There is a workaround by using crosstab in group header, but it is extremely awkward solution and is not suitable if you have many running totals. The best solution would be the 4th pass that would place precalculated running totals to any place on the report. (no solution)
    5. Cannot make big print forms that exceed standard paper format A4/A3/A2. Crystal can only use windows print forms that are supported by current printer driver. It is possible to use customized print forms, but on another computer, the report will be truncated to Letter/A4 if custom form is not defined on that computer. Sometimes it is necessary to create very wide reports that should be spanned to multiple pages horizontally. No way to do that in Crystal.(no solution)
    6. Cannot join tables without actual relation (when one table always has one row, for example, a table containing system options).  (no solution, must use fictitious join)
    7. Cannot use inner join after outer join, if, for example, you need to outer-join a subquery with 2 tables that are inner-joined.     Example: SELECT a., b. FROM a LEFT OUTER JOIN b INNER JOIN c ON b.id2 = c.id2 ON a.id = b.id (workaround: make views that contain inner joins, and outer-join those views instead of tables)
    8. No way to join tables on compound field (rarely needed but still a problem)     Example: SELECT a., b. FROM a LEFT OUTER JOIN b ON a.year*12 + a.month = b.period_index
    9. Crosstab: summarized values cannot be placed horizontally  (workaround exists but will destroy export to excel)  CRXI solves this problem
    10. CR9, CR10, CRXI: it is extremely difficult and time-consuming to move your existing report to another database server or another database with the same structure. You have to change the location property for each table, manually, one at a time. In CR8, you only had to change the location for 1 table, and Crystal did the same for the rest of the tables.(no solution)
    11. CR9, CR10, CRXI: when reporting off the stored procedure with a lot of optional parameters, you have to check "Set to NULL" checkbox every time you perform "Verify database". Try to do this with SP-s having ca 100 parameters, and you will quickly become a Crystal hater.(no solution)
That's pretty much all. I intentionally left out clear bugs that are not fixed by the latest service packs and hotfixes, and also I left out issues with exporting to different formats, mostly to Excel. One can write a book about how to export to Excel and its gotchas in different Crystal versions.
I will be happy if experiences people will comment my list, maybe together we can find a solution or workaround to some of the problems.

Thanks for the answers. I'm glad to know that grouping and running total issues have been resolved in CRXI. This might become a reason for me to move on with Crystal.
Charliy, about compiled reports, I did not miss this feature because I've always preferred building a small frontend application for better handling of connection information and report parameters.About repository, I don't get it, according to "Crystal feature comparison by version and edition" document, the repository is still there in CRXI. Is it?
yangster, I am aware about the Command feature of newer Crystal versions, however, I think I cannot use SQL commands to imitate different combinations of joins because of performance issues. According to article c2016331, and to my own experience, the data returned by multiple SQL commands will be joined on the client, not on the server. Joining hundreds of thousands rows on the client is... not very optimal. Nevertheless, multiple SQL commands may be useful for simple lookup technics with limited number of rows.
The #1 issue is all about guidelines. As I wrote, all fields in my reports are carefully aligned from bottom, left and right and are snapped to guidelines. Guidelines make it easier to achieve perfect formatting, which is extremely important for me since most of my reports must export to Excel flawlessly. Without guidelines, aligning tens of fields without gaps is a major pain. But the problem is, selecting and dragging multiple fields will un-snap them, leaving guidelines behind, because Crystal does not allow you to select and drag guidelines along with fields. The alternative would be snapping objects to grid, but I personally don't like the grid for a number of reasons, including having to change the grid size for different reports, having to turn "snap to grid" on and off when aligning vertically or horizontally etc. But I have to admit, aligning to grid does seem to be the only choice if you have to move multiple fields around without un-snapping them.

  • 2007 iMac freezes up, rainbow wheel appears when this happens. I know the computer is starting to get old but I can't afford a new one at this time and would love to continue using my Mac, but it's frustrating. Would a fresh install or OS upgrade resolve?

My circa 2007 iMac freezes up, and rainbow wheel appears when this happens. I know the computer is starting to get old but I can't afford a new one at this time and would love to continue using my Mac, but it's frustrating. Most of the time I ONLY have 1 thing open at a time, and keep my tabs down to a minimum. I bought this to do film editing on but with it acting like this I cannot do that. I know I need a ram upgrade (currently running 2 gb) and my OS is old, 10.5.8, but I think even with it being a bit outdated it should run better than this. Would a fresh install or OS upgrade resolve this? Or any other suggestions to keep this clunker chugging along for a little while longer?

How full is the hard drive?
Do you run any virus software or hard drive "cleaner" software like MacKeeper?
If your model is from 2007 you can install up to 6 GBs of RAM.
2 GBs is the barest of minimum RAM for OS X to run on.
Especially if doing video work. You simply do not have sufficient RAM.
Also OS X 10.5.8 Leopard support ended around 2009.
You could update to OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, at least.
It is available on disc from the Apple store for U.S. $19.99.
I Would seriously upgrade your iMac's RAM to the max. 6 GBs before doing this.
Reliable Mac RAM can be purchase from online Mac RAM source Crucial memory or OWC ( also known as macsales).

Trying to copy ANY file from my MacBook Pro to an external hard drive spins for 45 minutes then fails. I hate this computer and WISH I never would have wasted my money. Any ideas? WD My Passport 2TB Drive, had to buy a program to make the POS read files. Copies that would take seconds from a Windows based machine never complete. I have to close the transfer or shut off the machine half the time. Worst computer I have EVER owned, crashes non-stop, constantly freezes, and seems like EVERY operation is more complicated with this thing. Literally, my 1997 Compaq was FAR MORE reliable and user friendly.

This is one of the messages I keep getting; The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in -- File Whatever -- can’t be read or written.(Error code -36)
I have copied things to the hard drive in the past, but it has always been incredibly slow, and now just seems to freeze and fail
