I Must Be Missing Something Here...

Question

Why can't you do this? At the innermost line, it gives me an error of "The type of the expression must be an array type but it resolved to Matrix"
public int[] multiBF(Matrix matrix1, Matrix matrix2) {
     array1 = new int[matrix1.rows][matrix1.columns];
     array2 = new int[matrix2.rows][matrix2.columns];
     for (int i = 0; i < matrix1.rows; i++) {
          for (int j = 0; j < matrix1.columns; j++) {
               array1 = matrix1[i][j].intValue();

Oh yeah my bad... well, I changed it to this and it still gives me the same error.
public int[] multiBF(Matrix matrix1, Matrix matrix2) {
     array1 = new int[matrix1.rows][matrix1.columns];

     for (int i = 0; i < matrix1.rows; i++) {
          for (int j = 0; j < matrix1.columns; j++) {
               array1[i][j] = matrix1[i][j].intValue();
}
