I need a 2nd DVD drive, wich one?

I have an HP DVD writer from my old PC. i tried hooking it up on my MacPro but when i try to open it up, it doesnt open because the faceplate is too big, it wont let the drive open completely. I also have an LG DVD Drive, but the same issue, the faceplate is too big and it doesnt open. Which DVD should i buy? i want DL capabilities, RW + -.
Thanks guys

Hello everyone. I deal with a similar issue with regards to adding a second optical drive to my Mac Pro. Checking the prices, it was cheaper, not to mention more flexible to purchase a seond IDE optical drive online. I purchased a new Plextor, though ones from Lite-On, NEC, Sony, and Pioneer are also good choices. As mentioned above most of the DVD recorders sold currently have a similar faceplate, therefore with a little modification, they can be made compatible with the drive lid on the Mac Pro's case. Although one can saw the faceplate to make it fit, I found that using sandpaper of a medium grit along the bottom edge made trimming the faceplate a bit easier. You can of course remove the plate, usually by applying steady upward pressure (perpendicular to the disc tray), but I found that the drive may sound a little louder without the faceplate. Also, make sure to set the drive jumper to cable select, same as the top optical drive. Hope this helps.

  • 2nd dvd drive?  How to open?

    Hi,
Real quick question. Im new to macs. As you can tell by my posts.
How do you open up the 2nd dvd drive to use? I know you can hit the eject button on the keyboard for the top drive but what about the bottom one? Its prolly something real simple. but i cant figure it out...

They do not sell Combo or DVD ROM drives for Mac Pros. A DVD reader/writer with DL, the works- a/k/a "Superdrive" is only about $50. I cannot imagine anyone even sells CD burner/ DVD readers or DVD read only drives at all. What would that cost? $5 or $10? Apple sure doesn't.
Open the side and have a look and see how many you have. Or read your invoice.
At least the complete lack of a 2nd drive solves that eject not working conundrum.

  • 2nd DVD drive... How to open it?

I installed a 2nd DVD drive on my G4 mirror doors, but can't figure out how to open it to insert a cd?

    Hi
I think you need to hold down the option (alt) key and press the eject key on the keyboard.

  • G5 adding 2nd DVD drive

I purchase a 2nd DVD drive , Pioneer BDC - 207 , it mounts, but, if the computer goes to sleep or I power down, the drive is not found.
    I have un-install then re-install the drive.
    Pioneer customer service  says "
Double check the power setting in the Mac and make sure to disable them.
When the power setting are turned on it will send the drive to sleep when
not in use as an attempt to preserve power. However since our drive is not
equipped with a Mac firmware the computer is not able to wake the drive up
therefore in most cases it requires that it be disconnected to restore
    operation. "
Other than the power  settings in System Preference, is there another power setting for this 2nd drive ??

    What computer do you have?
This forum is Mac Pro desktops which all have Intel processors.
There a separate forum for the Power PC (G4 and G5) desktops
    Power Mac
How did you connect the second DVD drive?
Just how are you "installing" the drive?

  • I want a 2nd DVD drive for my iMac

    Hi
Have a new 24" Alloy iMac and well, having moved my main computer from a PC to a MAC is great, iLove it! Problem though is there are lots of times where I could utilize a 2nd CD/DVD drive. Apparently the external drive for the MacBook Air is exclusive to that (which doesn't make any sense to me - Apple would sell a ton of these if they made them non-specific rather than to only a small % of sales). So I've been poking around here on the forums and I've seen some referenced to MacSales.com site - but with such a beautiful machine as an iMac, I can't bring myself to getting one of these butt ugly things. Found a handsome LG CD/DVD with Lightscribe external drive, but no evidence of Mac support.
Where can I get, or how can I get an external DVD drive for my Mac? I'd rather avoid patching if possible.
Better still: Apple - update the MacAir drive to be universal for your machines please!
    Thanks!

OWC (macsales.com) would be a good source, since they are very Mac-centric and should know what works well and what does not work well with Macs and Mac OS X.
They may be boxy and "ugly" but those full-sized tray-loading drives are the most reliable type. Plus with a tray-loader, you can read the strangely shaped and mini- discs that would choke a slot-loader.
If you want more style, LaCie is also Mac-oriented and they have some choices.

  • Need to buy DVD drive / Storage for my iMac Mid2011 but don't know where to start

I have an iMac mid2011, and would like to fit it with an additional dvd drive so that I don't have to mess around changing region codes from 1 to 2 and back.
Can somebody please recommend a dvd drive (better if blu-ray) compatible with iMac Mid2011?  I am thinking of buying online, but I am afraid of getting the wrong thing.
I am also expanding my video library, and have considered buying a 2TB external HD, but a friend told me to better buy a NAS.  So same question goes, should I stay traditional and just buy the hard drive?  Which brands are most compatible with my mac?  and If you'd rather buy a NAS, why should I go for it, and which brand?
    Thanks so much Apple experts.
    AJD

So far I've not found a single USB DVD player that didn't work with the Mac. BluRay is a bit trickier since you'll also need 3rd party software to play commercial BluRay movies because the  Mac OS doesn't support BluRay.
A NAS is useful under three circumstances: 1) you want to access data from the drive when you aren't at home. 2) you have more than one computer in the household and want to share that drive with them and/or 3) you want to take advantage of RAID technology. And even here a NAS isn't the only way to accomplish this.
If none of these hold true for you then save your money and get a high quality external drive - I recommend OWC to one and all. (I have no affiliation, I'm a very satisfied customer.) You might even want to consider OWC's miniStack Max which contains both a hard drive and optical drive.

  • Install 2nd DVD Drive in Mac Pro 1,1 or 3,1

Would anyone have info on installing a 2nd optical drive in either the 1st-Generation or 3rd Generation Mac Pro?   Seems ticky to open the optical compartment open.  Thanks.

The instructions can be found here: http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/0/MA177/en_US/MacPro_OpticalDrive_DIY.pdf
Edit: Note, you need to remove the bezel off of the drive drawer before installing. And make sure you keep the latch on the back of the computer in the up position, it locks the drive carrier in place when in the down position. It can take some wiggling and effort to get the drive carrier out.

  • Macbook Pro 15" Need to Replace DVD drive

I was wondering where I could go to either purchase a new Matshita DVD-R UJ-857 drive for my macbook pro, or a comparable slot-DVD drive. It is out of warranty, and I would rather install it myself to save cash on installation, because I am knowledgeable in computer building. Will apple sell this part, if not, where can I go to purchase it/what drives will fit properly?
    Thanks!

    This is a compatible drive.

  • Need to replace DVD drive on my system.

My DVD drive has finally died after years of service and was wondering which of the following would be a good replacement to use:
    Pioneer DVR-710
    Pioneer DVR-112D
I know several people have used the 112D and given good reviews about it. Has anyone used the 710?

    Hi-
Here are some user reports with the DVR-710/111:

  • Help needed! T40 DVD driver cannot read DVD

    Dear Expert
My DVD driver cannot DVD. The DVD driver icon in "My Computer" does not show the name of the DVD and when clicked, shows "no DVD inserted".
    But it can read CD.
Thanks very much for your help and advice in advance,

there is a possibility that the laser associated with the DVD reader is no longer functional, while your CD reader laser still is, as these two lasers are different.

  • Need external Cd/DVD drive for my 2009 iMac.  the internal one no longer reads CDs.  thoughts?

I need to finish putting CDs into my iTunes library.  The drive on here just spits out my CDs now.

"Apple even makes one but it's $79 which is kind of pricy."
And is the same one that used to be inside iMacs. It is cheap and not very good and prone to the same type of premature failures.

  • Need New CD/DVD Drive

Need to replace my internal drive. Any suggestions? Preferably one with a DVD burner.

    Good Morning,
I hope you find this article useful, I did. I bought my superdrive from Other World Computing. At the time (June 2006) the model was Pioneer DVR-111D.
I have an older eMac, so there were some tense moments, when the article was not enough to guide me. The thing that really was frustrating was when I went to reconnect the display connector. The connector housing was so tight up against something (don't remember what is was), but I actually bent a pin and my screen was in a lovely green. I took it apart again and I had to remove the locking snap on the one side to make it work. I has been working fine ever since.

  • Need to replace DVD drive

It looks like my Pioneer DVD-RW-DVR-107D will no longer work (read or write)with DVD disks. I still functions with CDs. However, it will not even accept a blank DVD disk.
I got very good advice from this site back in the fall of 2004 concerning where to purchase a replacement drive, including a model number, for myparticular Mac. The replacement did a high volume of great DVDs for me, until yesterday.
Can someone recommend the current optimum drive to replace the DVR-107D on an old Dual G-4 so that I can keep operating for a while? The current drive lasted from October 4, 2004 until now.
    Thanks:
    Bill Livesay

    Hi Bill,
    Just recently I added a Pioneer DVR110D to a dual MDD 1.25GHz.
I put the old driver in the lower bay, and the new one in the upper tray.
I bought the drive at OWC (www.macsales.com) for about $60 plus shipping.
With the Tiger update to 10.4.6, this drive is fully Apple supported for burning all kinds of CD's, DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, DL DVD up to 16x.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to attach two dvd drives to one input on X-

On my current Audigy 2 ZS there are two inputs to attach cd/dvd dri'ves to. A cd in and a aux.
On the new X-Fi cards there seems to only to be one of these. How can I attach both to the same card?
If I only attach the one to the dri've that I will be using as a player, how can I hear the sound on the dri've that is not?
Both of the dri'ves are IDE dri'ves. One from Toshiba, the other from NEC.

    compatibility
aaah, a tip for you: turn off all unneeded output sources in vollume control panel, like aux or cd in, they will generate some noise.
Only let these acti've: midi synth, play control, wave, and digital
Only if you need another output/input source turn them on.

  • Need os9 compatible DVD drive replacement for MDD G4

Are current ide optical drives (Pioneer 110, for example) supported at all under OS9.2? Not too bothered about iTunes etc support but do need Finder read and Toast burning support.
    Thanks
    Roger king

Booted into OS 9.2. Had to install Toast 5.1.3 from CD as I have not installed the program while started from my 9 volume. Used 110D to install. Restarted machine and burnt CD at 32x. Burn successful. Did not try a DVD-R.
