I need an opinion guys - Oracle guy learning Java Here.......

Hi all,
I was laid off about 6 weeks ago from the consulting firm I worked for for 7 years ....... I did Oracle
Custom Development using PL/SQL and Oracle Forms/Reports on a Web Apps Server.... this I did for about 2 years. Prior to that I was a COBOL guy with about 20 years experience. I've heard
that the way of the future in Oracle DB programming will be a transition from PL/SQL to JAVA so
that's why I'm learning JAVA .
I have started to teach myself JAVA during my un-employment and am having a great time (although trying to remember the nomenclature is "kindOfHard" ;-) )...
Once I finish this self-study course (Deitel and Deitel JAVA 2 - How to Program... very good btw)
I plan on taking the JCP test... I'm about 1/4 thru the book and have been writing 5 of the hardest programs that the book has as exercises at the end of each chapter.
Has anyone out there ever experienced a transition such as this and is getting the JCP going
to help me get a JAVA job with little-to-none JAVA programmin Business experience ?????
I guess I'm a tad down today as I've never been unemployed and getting some opinions from
the great folks out there sure makes the day go wonderfully.....
Thanks for letting me ramble on,
Mike

Hi Mike,
have a look at :
http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=361&thread=234679
that might give you some hints. I am not certified, did Oracle PL/SQL as well but also C++ so the transition to Java was (fairly) easy. Anyhow best of luck and keep going.

  • How to use Oracle objects in java code

    Hi all!
    I'm reading an xls and i need to fill me oracle objects with java code:
    OBJECT_NAME OBJECT_TYPE
    LETTURA_OBJ TYPE
    LETTURA_OBJ TYPE BODY
    In the past weeks i've been using both java code into oracle and oracle objects, but new i need to write those objects with data i read with java, anybody can help me?
    I know that the easiest work around would be to put the data i read from the excel file into a table and then fill the oracle objects, but now i want to learn how to write directly those objects with a command like the following one:
    a sample of the code i'm tryng to write:
    CREATE OR REPLACE AND RESOLVE JAVA SOURCE NAMED REPORT."Manage_Excel_ASMBS" AS
    import java.io.*;
    import java.io.IOException;
    import jxl.*;
    public cass ....
    #sql{  variabili_globali.var_ER_F3.Tipo_Lettura := 5}
    thanks,

    my iPhone 3g has 2 white horizontal lines i don't know where did it came from. I turn it off then on but its still there. the lines spreads everyday. I dont know how to fix it. need some help guys.

    If you take a screenshot (Press the home button and Lock button at the same time), does it appear on the screenshot? Zoom in on the screenshot and see if it's still there.
    If not, then your display is failing. I would recommend taking it to an Apple Store if you can, if you can't then to an authorised Apple reseller.
    If it does appear on the screenshot when you zoom into the spot, then it's a really weird software issue! You might have to backup and restore the device.
    Let me know!

  • Hi. I am reinstalling Macbook Pro OS X from the "question mark icon". During process, there is a question "select the disk where to install Mac OS X" but there is no option/selection in the box. I really need your help guys. I need it badly. :'(

    Hi. I am reinstalling Macbook Pro OS X from the "question mark icon". During process, there is a question "select the disk where to install Mac OS X" but there is no option/selection in the box. I really need your help guys. I need it badly. :'(

    If you got the question mark and you do not see any partition to install OS X to, it is not good.
    Close the OS X installer by pressing the red button at the top left corner of the Install OS X window, and open Disk Utility. Then, look at the left sidebar and tell me if you see your hard drive. You should see something like this:
    Do not worry if you do not see Macintosh HD or if the option with an arrow shows a different name. This is normal.
    If you see it, choose it, go to the Erase tab and erase the drive. Finally, close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X. You will lose everything if you do not have a backup.
    If you do not see the drive, it is damaged and it has to be replaced. You can replace the hard drive of a MacBook Pro without voiding the warranty, and any 2'5" SATA hard drive is valid. If you are not an experienced user or you do not want to go inside the MacBook, take it to an Apple Store or reseller.

  • I need an opinion and/or advice about sending auto mail !!!

    Hi,
    I'm creating a web application using servlets and few HTML files for user interface. What I have already created is Login.html page allowing user to enter username and password and there is a link that takes the user to registration.html page where he/she can register in case he/she is not a registered user already. All this information (user's personal data when registering) gets stored by some servlets to MS Access database. Once registered user he/she can log in and another servlet checks the database for username/pass provided. Once logged in,user is provided with a page that allows him/her to choose date (dropdown menu) and time (checkboxes) and once the user does this this date and time(s) are stored to database again. Now,I have already done this much but what I still need to do is to allow user to select other users from database who he/she wants to meet with-not all users registered (not sure how I'm going to this) and then I need to write a separate servlet that would check database every 2 hours for example and if it finds overlapping meeting time for any group of people it would send an email to all the members of this group informing them about the meeting time and date. What I need from you guys is advice how this could be done, what mail server I should use, what could be a problem, best way to do it...just personal opinions if you have one. I would really appreciate any advice that any of you guys could provide me with. Thanks a lot, Jimmy.

    hey,
    first of all thanks 96472834 for your answer. Now, since I don't really know much (embarassed to say anything) about java mail I would ask you or anyone else willing to answer few more questions. Let's say I do this the way you suggested and I'm one of the people who are supposed to meet. Now, when I get that email, what does it say-where it comes from, what is the email address it comes from. Also, what do you mean by saying "your program should be reusable". How do I accomplish that and what is the purpose of that? Thanks again, Jimmy.

    ThanksOk, I haven't been much help here lately, but I'd like to help here if I can. In my opinion, you're talking about Advanced Java topics here. You are basically asking to run before you walk.
    Can you compile and run a simple 'Hello World' program in Java?
    I've always found that a positive way to start.

  • Help needed on installation of Oracle 9i on Sun Solaris 8

    Hey,
    Help needed on installation of Oracle 9i EE on Sun Solaris 8. The problem I met was: we followed the installation guide from the documentation. And we selected the choice "install software only". After it was done successfully, we run Database Configuration Assistant utility to create a database instance. But finally it always tried to create the instance at the root directory ( / ) which doesn't have enough space and then failed. The case was that we have set the enviroment parameters: $ORACLE_BASE = /export/mydata, $ORACLE_HOME = /export/apps/oracle9i. That means it should be installed at /export/mydata, but it didn't. Any help or advice are welcome. Thanks.

    I have downloaded Oracle 11G R2 version from Windows and extracted it in Windows and copied it into DVD after extraction in two folders. Now I am mounting that DVD in Solaris 10 installed in my VMware . I made a new directory named as 'installation ' under /export/home/oracle and copied the folders from DVD to 'installation' folder. Now I am entering installation folder and try to do ./runInstaller as 'oracle ' user and getting the error mentioned before.

  • Need Advise and Suggestions-Oracle 10g

    Hi,
    I have been working on databases as DB developer(mainly PLsql)--Oracle 10g
    Recently,i have joined in a particular position where I have been asked to find out areas where
    improvement is necessary / or areas where improvement or changes would help very much and also gradually implement all best practises avaialable.
    So,could you please help me with these queries
    (1)What are the most important areas that i can start with the database which would impact largely the entire database.How can i start with it? any steps or process
    (2)I had once taken a report out for the expensive SQLs running.But that dint help much...because those SQLs were used temporarily on and off.
    Similarly,what are the other points to be looked on.
    (3)Things which can be replaced with the industry standarad better ones fully.
    an example would be...like.."following a particular naming format,or coding style,etc
    Thanks
    Rohit

    Hi Rohit,
    This is a pretty huge subject. To start, I'd say you need to talk to the business. Talk to the users of the database, cause they are your customers. Get a clear understanding of the most critical business processes. Start with the most critical ones, and get performance profiles. How long do they take to run? What's the customer's perception of the process performance? If it's acceptable, move on to the next one. If it's not acceptable, you'll need to dig deeper. Look at each piece of the process. Where is the most time being spent? Can it be improved? This step will be a combination of process improvement and setting the correct expectation. Often, the user doesn't really know what is realistic in terms of performance. If you have a 2 billion row table that needs to get full table scanned, expecting a response time of a few seconds just simply isn't going to happen. You need to clearly convey that to the customer. On the other hand, at the same time, you should be on the lookout for real improvements. If you can re-write the SQL or add an index, and eliminate the FTS on that 2 billion row table, maybe a response time of a few seconds is actually realistic.
    It's all about understanding the system, and understanding the customer's needs, and how they intersect. It will be an iterative process, and will take some time.
    As to "best practices", I'm not a fan of them. Understand your system, understand your customer's needs, and understand how Oracle actually works. If you can master that, you'll be unstoppable. Note that many, many people, much smarter people than me, have spent a lifetime trying to master those three points... :-)
    Good luck with your new job!
    -Mark

    I'm new to SQL Server Integration Services and I need help on how to begin learning SSIS. Is there any training for it besides msdn?

    Check this thread where people have already given their suggestion on learning SSIS

    I would suggest to go for You tube videos (type learn SSIS or begin SSIS step by step) you will get lot of good tutorials to start with.

  • Need the opinion of experts: N85 with Bluetooth pr...

    Really need the opinion of experts on this one.
    My N85 was swapped after the complaint that the Music Library Menu opened automatically after pairing with bluetooth of the car (permanent failure). Another complaint was that video recording was defective (intermittent failure). Also, Nokia detected great consumption of battery.
    My question is: the swap came back the same relating to the bluetooth problem.. Is this a case of bad repair or a case of low knowledge...? I'm wondering if the Music Library Menu is to open when pairing with car bluetooth (strangely)....

    The Dell Precision 380 has 3 PCIe slots: a x16 (for video cards), a x1,
    and a x4.  I'm sure there are other PCs on the market with
    multiple PCIe slots.
    Alternatively, the PCIe-8362 has TWO cabled PCI Express links.  So
    you only need one slot in your host PC.  This may not be the best
    solution, however, if bandwidth is your primary concern.  With one
    8362 connected to two chassis, the total maximum throughput is 160
    MB/s.  With two 8361s (each connected to a different chassis), the
    total maximum throughput is 220 MB/s (110 MB/s on each).
    Finally, keep in mind that the PXI chassis in your system are still
    running at PCI speeds (132 MB/s).  Plus, this bandwidth is shared
    across all devices in the system.  So the MXI Express connection
    to the chassis may not be the bottleneck in the system.
    Good luck!
