I need Migration Assistant help.

I'm using MA for the first time. I'm attempting to move from an iMac (OSX 10.5) to a Mac Pro (OSX 10.5). I connected the computers via Firewire and rebooted the iMac using the (t) option. The next window that came up was to 'Select Items for Transfer'. I checked 'Files and Folders' (119GB) and Library (61GB). It then reported that my 'Selected Items' = 621.6GB. First question... how does 119GB + 62GB end up as 621.6GB selected?
I have several external drives on the iMac. My plan is to move the contents of those to the Mac Pro internal disks. For example... I have two, 250GB external drives on the iMac with partition names: 'Aux-1' and 'Aux-2'. I would prefer not to chop up the 1TB internal drive to fixed partitions. Preferable would be to use a single partition named Aux which contains the folders 'Aux-1' and Aux-2'. Is there some sort of redirection utility that would allow this? For example a Library entry that refers to 'Aux-1/Myfile' would be redirected to 'Aux/Aux-1/Myfile.

Appears to be an error. Migrate and see what occurs. As for your two externals, just create folders on the MacPro and then drag & drop from the externals to the folders.

  • Time Machine Migration Assistant HELP!

My MacBook Air has a whole lot of storage that is being used for who knows what.
I am going to back up my mac, erase it, and reinstall the backup because that seems to work. But, I have no idea what the differences and similarities in Time Machine and Migration Assistant is. Can I use migration assistant to back it up and reinstall on the same computer? If not, how do I install a time machine backup on a compeletely erased mac? (I'm on OS X Mavericks)

Before you do anything else, I strongly suggest you figure out what's taking up the space.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
    iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders. It may take a few minutes for ODS to list all the files.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • I need migration assistance

I have an old iMac (lampshade) that I want to migrate over to an Intel iMac. However, I need to run Tiger on the Intel due to a compatibility issue with one of the apps that I'm running on the current lampshade iMac.
So, what is the best way to do this? I don't want to use Migration Assistant because the new iMac has Leopard on it. I guess I basically need to clone the old computer and install it on the new Mac. Do I do this through target disk mode and then use Carbon Copy Cloner or something like that? Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks, Greg

You've got some cross purpose statements. You say you want Tiger on the Intel machine so you can run certain applications, but you say you don't want to to clone because you don't want to erase the Leopard install, or...?
All the above is moot. If the intel Mac came with Leopard originally it will not run Tiger, period. If it came with Tiger originally (a few models did for a short period) it will run Tiger so reinstall the Intel version of Tiger on it because you can't migrate a PPC version onto an Intel computer. If it is a Tiger-capable computer and you want both Leopard and Tiger on it you will need to partition the drive so you can have a dual boot computer. Let us know exactly what model computer you have.

  • TM Backup isn't listed in Migration Assistant - help!

    Hello all,
The WD hard drive in my 24" iMac (Jupiter) recently crapped out. Apple Care to the rescue! They replaced the drive and loaded up a fresh install of 10.6.1. I came home with the intent to just restore from my Time Machine backups. But...
My backups aren't showing up in Migration Assistant, while the backups from my wife's MacBook are. The facts:
    * My backups are there, but don't display in Migration Assistant.
    * My backups, admittedly, excluded system files, but my understanding is that I should still be able to use Migration Assistant to restore user accounts/files, etc.
    * My wife's backups are there, and do display in Migration Assistant.
    * My wife's backups do include system files.
    * In my backup folder (Backups.backupdb/Jupiter) there is a fairly large file called "2009-10-25-173341.inProgress", but it does not contain enough of a backup to be useful.
    * The "Latest" backup is 2009-10-25-164450, but the folder in there only has the Applications and Developer folders, whereas every other backup folder (2009-10-25-143643 all the way back to 2009-2-26-185723) contains what I would expect to see; Applications, Developer, Library, Users, and a few extraneous files.
My question is: what do I do? I've tried a couple things already, but with no luck:
    * I copied the "2009-10-25-173341.inProgress" file to the Desktop and deleted it from the Backups.backupdb/Jupiter folder, in case it was confusing Migration Assistant; this had no effect.
    * I tried changing the "Latest" symlink to point to the backup that I think is valid (2009-10-25-143643) by copying over 10.5's version of fsaclctl (doesn't exist in 10.6) to disable ACLs for the Backups.backupdb folder, but it didn't appear to have any effect as far as Migration Assistant was concerned.
Is trying to get my backups to show up in Migration Assistant a lost cause? Would I be better off trying to manually copy files from the last full backup (2009-10-25-143643)? Please help; your time and help in this matter will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Lee

I think that's true, but hope once this is sorted out you'll remove that exclusion.
    * In my backup folder (Backups.backupdb/Jupiter) there is a fairly large file called "2009-10-25-173341.inProgress", but it does not contain enough of a backup to be useful.
Yes, that's a failed or interrupted backup. The full restore option, Setup Assistant, Migration Assistant, and TM's "Star Wars" interface will all ignore it.
That's likely the problem. Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant only look at the last completed backup. (Why nothing else is there is separate mystery.)
+*Never, ever, move, change or delete anything in TM's backups via the Finder.+* This may not have caused damage, but it's possible to hopelessly corrupt your backups that way. And do not try to put it back.
Ditto. That may have been the "kiss of death." Change it back if you can.
Is trying to get my backups to show up in Migration Assistant a lost cause? Would I be better off trying to manually copy files from the last full backup (2009-10-25-143643)? Please help; your time and help in this matter will be greatly appreciated!
First, do a +*Repair Disk+* (not permissions) on your TM volume.
Then use TM to try to delete the 2009-10-25-164450 backup. (See #12 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum.)
That might then let MA see the 2009-10-25-143643 backup. If so, immediately go buy a lottery ticket -- you're one lucky fellow!
If not, your only remaining option is probably to try copying via the Finder. That's going to be rather "iffy" and, especially if you have a multi-user setup, will give you all sorts of permissions problems on the copied items.
    Good luck!

  • Migration Assistant Help Needed

    Hi,
I just received the new "15 Retina MacBook Pro. I am Migrating for a MacBook Pro from "06 using a Ethernet cord and Thunderbolt adapter.
We followed the step by step directions on site, but the transfer gets stuck at 7 or 8 minutes remaining each time. I've tried the transfer a couple times and the freezing has been consistant around the same time - I even let it site overnight for 8 hours with 7 minutes to go, nothing.
Also to note, after exciting out of the transfer once it froze it appeared that NOTHING had transferred.
Anyone have the same problem/know the solution?
    Thanks

On the origin computer I would run Disk Ultility to carry out a Repair Disk and Repair Disk Permissions.
You may also run the Console app found in Utilities and use that to browse the migration log to discover on what specific file it is hanging up.

  • Migrating assistant help! Ethernet

Please someone help me.  I have a late 2007 Macbook Pro and just bought a 2011 Macbook Pro.  Both have snow leopard and Im attempting to migrate through an ethernet cord.  Is there ANYTHING that I need to do?  I've plugged in the ethernet cord, turned off airport of my old mac and told my new mac that Im doing it through ethernet.  I get to where It is preparing the information and then it comes up "failed to connect to network"  What am I doing wrong?  I did try to connect wirelessly before I went out and got the ethernet card.  I shared my internet connect.  I am out of things to do.  Any ideas?  Thank you

It shouldn't!  Return the cord to Walmart, get your money back and go to BestBuy.  They have firewire cords.  You can even call them to make sure they have them in stock.

  • Help!  Migration Assistant Woes!

    Hi all--
I have an aged dual USB iBook that was recently replaced by a spiffy new MacBook Pro. The iBook is running 10.3.8, I believe. What I need Migration Assistant to do is transfer my email--Apple's Mail on both machines--to the new machine.
I ran migration assistant and all went well. I fired up Mail on the MacBook and walked through the setup. What I can't get to is the transferred mailboxes on either the MacBook or the iBook (hooked up via Target Mode.) Both have red circles with minuses in them.
I have important email that needs to come across to the MacBook, but I can't get to it.
What am I doing wrong? Everyone else seems to breeze through with Migration Assistant.
In fact, I don't see any of my files or anything on the new machine.
I followed Apple's instructions and left everything checked.
    Enlighten a goofball! 8)

MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Locate the folder which contains the migrated mail on the MacBook Pro, and then hold down the Option key while dragging it to your desktop. The Finder will ask you for your administrator password; after doing this, you should be able to access the mail folder on your desktop in the Finder. Rename the current Mail folder inside the Library folder of your home folder(this is the item with the house icon in the Finder's sidebar), and then move the Mail folder from the desktop to the Library.
If you set up your account before running the Migration Assistant, a new account has been created on your machine with the migrated data. There are some options for moving that data to your current account.

  • Trouble with migration assistant going from 10.5.8 to 10.6.1

    Hi,
I have a macbook pro running 10.5.8 and just got a new macbook running 10.6.1. I'm trying to run the migration assistant. It gets to the point where it says 'preparing information' on each computer and then it seems to just hang. I've let it go for 45 minutes and nothing happens past that.
    Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Susan

I'm not sure what you are doing so try this:
On the old computer do the following:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
With both computers turned off connect a Firewire cable between them. Boot the old computer into Target Disk Mode. After the TDM screen appears boot the new computer normally. After the new computer has started you should find a drive icon for your old computer on the new computer's Desktop.
Open Migration Assistant in the Utilities folder. Select the migration option (should be already selected) to migrate from another computer or hard drive. Then follow the onscreen instructions. For additional help select Migration Assistant Help from the Help menu.

  • Hello, I need help with my macbook pro. It looks like I cannot install anything anymore. Everytime I try to install a new software, use the migration assistant or click the lock to make changes, it simply does not react.

Hello, I need help with my macbook pro.
It looks like I cannot install anything anymore. Everytime I try to install a new software, I simply get stuck during the installation type process. I put in my password, it does accept it, but it does not go any further.
I tried to reset the password, put no password, repair the permissions, the disk but nothing will do. I nearly got stuck with the log in screen but finally succeeded in disabling it.
So I thought I might try to create a new account but I cannot click the lock to make changes. It simply refuses to react.
I am now thinking about using the migration assistant to save all my settings, data and so fourth, but again I get stuck when I have to type in my password. It accepts it but nothing happens...
I guess it has something to do with the authorization process, but can't find anything on the internet about it... Can you help me out?
    I am running Lion 10.7.3.
    Regards,
    Nicolas.
(I apologize if any grammatical/structural mistakes were to be found, english is not my mother-tongue. )

You probably won't like this suggestion, but I suggest you reinstall Lion.
First, backup your system. Next, reboot your system, press/hold the COMMAND-R keys to boot into the Recovery HD. Select 'Reinstall Mac OS X'. If you purchased Lion as an upgrade to Snow Leopard, the reinstall process will install Lion 10.7.3. If your system came preinstalled with Lion, you might still get Lion 10.7.2. Both installs are a total install of the OS. None of your apps or data will be impacted. Just the OS.

  • HT4796 Help needed with Migration Assistant, can't find files?

I've just purchased my first Mac (macbook Pro 15in) so please be kind, I'm so clueless it's ridiculous! Using migration assistant  I've transfered aprox 100GB of files from my PC which seemed to take about 2seconds, but have no idea where they are or how to access them. The files were mostly music but when I opened itunes there is nothing in my library. The rest of the stuff was pics, docs, email accounts but none of that seems to be there either.. From the few articles I've read I seem to have somehow created another user account which is labeled Guest User/Sharing only, but I can't seem to log in as that user to find the files.. What have I done?!  HELP!!

    Congratulations!
... Using migration assistant  I've transfered aprox 100GB of files from my PC which seemed to take about 2seconds, but have no idea where they are or how to access them.
It sounds as though Migration Assistant did not do a thing. With Migration Assistant, 100 GB will take time, no matter how the two computers communicate it will be at least an hour. Probably more. I recommend you connect them both to a wired network and make sure the PC is really using it. Wireless will take a lot longer.
I suggest you read the following step by step. On your Windows PC, you will need to download Migration Assistant. That link and everything else you need to know is in this document: OS X Lion: About Windows Migration Assistant. Follow its instructions to the letter.
The "guest" user is a feature of OS X and will not contain your files. Don't concern yourself with it.

  • New Mini, need help with migration assistant

    Hi,
Just got new (used) Mini and want to run Migration Assistant to transfer files from my old Mini. I have read through as many documents I can find describing Migration Assistant and Firewire Target Disc mode, but I am confused about a basic concept I guess. Do I need both Mini's hooked up to their own displays and keyboards for this to work? I ask because I have only one display and one keyboard/mouse. If I need just one display and keyboard, which Mini gets hooked up to the display and keyboard, the old Mini (source 10.5.8) or the new Mini (target 10.7.4). Sorry if this is a basic or obvious concept.,,, however here I sit dumbfounded.
Thanks in advance for any help, direction, walk through...
    Rick

TRy booting the old one in Target mode...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
This one will make the old one appear as a Firewire drive to the new one.
Sometimes you may need a Monitor or an adapter at least plugged into the old one.

  • Need help with Windows Migration Assistant, as a window pops up and I don't know what to do?

Hiya, so I just purchased a macbook pro and I want to transfer files using Windows Migration assistant.
However whenever I go to do it, the mac connects to the computer and the computer always stays on 'trying to connect to mac'
and sometimes this windows pops up where it says:
    'Email
There is no email program associated to perform the requested action. Please install an email program, or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel.'
I'm confused as I have an email program on the pc ( Windows Live Mail)
However I don't know what it means to create an 'association' and I have gone into default programs control panel to try find this associations and have however I don't know how to make this association as I've searched for the program Windows Migration Assistant, however it isn't there and I'm not sure what to do.

  • I need some help with Migration Assistant for transferring data

I would like to transfer selected items from my iMac (G4) to a new MacBook Pro using Migration Assistant, Can I selectively choose things to transfer? And are there any problems going from a G4 to an Intel-based machine? I'm mostly interested in transferring iPhoto photos and music from iTunes.

Migrating data other than your home folder may replace Intel components with PowerPC ones on the MacBook Pro, which will cause slow performance. Dragging over applications manually by restarting the old Mac with the T key held down and then placing them in the new Mac's Applications folder will work with many applications, but not all; any applications for which this doesn't work will need to be reinstalled.
