I Need Some Font Guidance...

Hello,
I've looked though the wiki and through some posts here and I'm trying to get a nice standard system font, but I'm having some trouble. I'm on Arch64 with Xfce using Verdana 10 currently, and I don't know if the font rendering is "good" or not. I'm using the Ubuntu rendering patch set instead of Infinality as I couldn't make it look very good, but maybe I just need some help there. I have screenshots:
Chromium on the front of Youtube (is it just me or is the font too small?)
Chromium header close up:
Chromium on Arch Forums:
Thunar:
Thanks for the help!  This is like the "final step" in setting up Arch for me.
EDIT: Improved image quality.

Mindstormscreator wrote:First off, thanks for all of the replies so far. I've tried a lot of what was said, but so far I haven't really found the "perfect" configuration. It seems that whatever rendering style or font I try there's always blurred edges or slightly colored edges or something, and it's pretty annoying. I'll keep playing with Infinality settings for now I guess.
In addition to the infctl customization tips posted by graysky, infinality also provides additional customization in the following file:
/etc/profile.d/infinality-settings.sh
That file contains many things to tweak and multiple presets. To find the optimal rendering you will probably want to tweak with both infctl and /etc/profile.d/infinality-settings.sh. There are multiple settings in infinality-settings.sh that deal with color fringing and how sharp the fonts render (you can try tweaking the LCD filter setting for example, the default stronger gibson filter can be too blurry for some, there are multiple sharper filters to choose from.)
The infinality forums are also a good place to ask for help if you have any specific problems with the rendering, the infinality author is an active poster there and is very helpful.

  • Rookie needs some CSS guidance!

    Hi there!
I've tried to use css to make the header stretch the whole
length of the window, regardless of size. I used "100%" as the
width, but something is amiss here. I've tried getting rid of any
margin or padding values, as well as getting rid of the footer bar
(which consequently has the same problem). The problem isn't as
pronounced in FF or Safari, but is very bad in IE.
I'm a total rookie in web design and am using DW8 for my
editor. Any help would save me from pulling out any more of my
    hair!
Here is the page and the style sheet:
    http://www.humboldt.edu/~first/
    http://www.humboldt.edu/~first/page.css
    Thanks a bunch!

    Hi,
I assume that you mean to say that you want to fill the
entire width of the viewport (browser window) and not the height
(length) of the available browser's viewable area?
Your code width setting will cause the banner div to stretch
across the full browser window's width and the image contained
within it will stretch as far as the img width setting of 383 px.
The remaining background color is made up of the background b2b2b2
    hex value that you set.
Stretching the full width of the browser is not a great idea
as this can cause horizontal scrolling in some browsers because of
browser chrome. The other problem is the very long text line
lengths that you can present the user with on large screens. It is
better (in my opinion) to build a liquid layout (as you are
attempting here) using percentage (%) setings, but modified to only
fill less than 100% of the viewport. Jakob Nielsen also agrees on
    this choice (
    http://www.useit.com/alertbox/screen_resolution.html)
I recommend around 80% as a good width setting. This gives you a
nicely balanced page on a 1024 x 768 monitor (the most popular
screen resolutions currently in use) and a reasonably nice
    structure on 800 x 600 and larger 1152 x 900 screen resolutions.
I would also alter my code to 'wrap' the page and contain the
page content (including the banner, all content and footer) in a
div that is centered in the viewport. So, to alter your code in
this manner I would use something like this:
    #wrapper {
    width: 85%
    #banner {
    add your styling here...
    (x)html code:
    <body>
    <div id="wrapper">
    <div id="banner">content......</div>
    <div id="left_col>content</div>
    <div id="main_content">content</div>
    <div id="footer">content</div>
    </div>
You could also add percentages to the internal columns
containing navigation and main content, for example, such as:
    #left_col{
    width: 22%
    float: left;
    #main_content{
    width: 85%
    float: right:
The two container divs will then float left and right within
the wrapper div and give you a nice virtual gutter, to take up any
silly content handling errors from Win IE browsers (which don't
honor the size of the container but do measure the size of the
content, which can lead to floats dropping below each other if
content divs are floated in the same direction).
There is, as you can imaging, more to css positioning than
meets the eye but this structure should get you going in the right
direction. You will need some padding to keep your content from
touching the sides of your content divs and any other styling that
you want for the final design.
Finally, one more point, when you float content divs they are
removed from the normal flow of the document in so much as they do
take their reference point for positioning from their parent
container but the parent does not 'contain' the floated div. This
causes the container div to collapse, with the floated div/s
spilling over the edge of the container. You correct this by adding
a clearing element below the last floated div but before the
closing </div> tag of the containing div. In the case of this
layout just add clear: both; to the css in the footer div, like
    this:
    #footer{
    clear: both:

  • Need some fundamental guidance on xserve usage.

I've recently taken on a part-time post as media technician for the art dept at a local college (I'm a broadcast editor by trade) and I'm trying to get my head round how to make the best usage of the equipment they have.
They have 18 imacs (2xi5s, 13x2.66 C2Duos and 3x2.16 C2Duos (the white ones)) for students and a couple more for staff.
They currently have an xserve that has sat there for a year, connected (and running) but unused. I'm planning on trying to use it as a backup server but I'm wondering if there is any other obvious use of it that I'm missing.
Should I be using it to administer the client machines remotely eg to perform software updates?
Currently the students are logging in via their pc network logins. Is there some way that the xserve can do this better? eg allowing the users settings to be created, administered and stored on the server so that their dock and finder settings etc are carried over whichever machine they log in to? At the moment they have to use the same machine every time anyway as the network isn't fast enough to stream video, but if that changed or a student wanted to keep their media on an external drive it would be good for them to be able to hop machines but keep all their settings.
If there's any other possible uses/functions that I've not thought of I'd love to hear them.

    JS...
With the XServer using ARD you can manage, control, observe, send messages.... shutdown, restart...wake...sleep etc... all the iMacs from the Xserve...or anywhere by accessing the Xserve via VPN ... I am at NYU and I manage 7 labs with 18-21 iMacs per lab.
The iMacs are dual boot OS using bootcamp... (Lion and Window 7).  On the xserve we also use VMWare to host a virtual Windows 2008 server in which we use Deepfreeze...Nortons Ghost to deal with Windows 7 on the bootcamp partition of the iMacs.
There is a lot you can do...  You can do updates via Xserve... you can do imaging using CasperSuite...DeployStudio etc...

  • In a bit of a pickle and I need some guidance...

I'm what you call a "Jack of all trades, Master of none". I've dabled in technology since I was a kid, but have never taken any formal classes or had any training on anything. I learned how to use Photoshop, Fireworks and Dreamweaver on my own over the years. Pretty much one of those trial and error kind of guy, but it has opened up many opportunities for me.
Well, the company I work for recently decided to do some advertising at a local horse race track. One of the ways we'll be advertising our business there is on a 20 ft. tall by 40 ft. long billboard. Knowing that I've done some print advertising for them in the past, they asked me if I could come up with something to have printed to put on the billboard and of course I took on the challenge.
I already have the perfect idea in mind for the billboard and all I need to do is implement it. The only problem I have is that I've never had to make something for that big of print. So my question is, should I be using InDesign CS6 for this, or is this something I should use Photoshop CS6 for?
If someone could point me in the right direction I would really appreciated. The worst part is that I need to have this done ASAP as the racing season starts on Monday.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Roberto

You will absolutely want to contact the billboard company to find out the technical specifications. After having worked at an outdoor advertising company, I can share a few tips with you.... Scale is a tough question to answer because some companies use a 1 ft = 1 in. scale and others have a different scaling method. Some will provide templates either in PDF format or in all of the programs they work with. Try checking the printer's website, if there's no info, you'll want to get in touch by phone - which is usually a good idea the first time you work with a printer anyway.
Most companies will accept all the major file types: PDF, EPS & JPG included, but you want to make sure before you get too far into the project. Sounds like you have an idea in mind, so what I really wanted to mention to you was that billboards are unique design-wise. You'll want to keep in mind that you only have about five seconds to get your message across and it needs to very legible. If the sign is lit, then you want to make sure to use a color combo that will work well both day and night, and in different lighting conditions in between. Certain color combinations work better than others as do some fonts. As Peter mentioned, billboards are sometimes produced in panels. You will want to know whether the billboard you are designing for is going to be produced in panels or in one vinyl sheet. Back at the company I worked for (keep in mind this was quite a few years back), the cost of the billboard was affected by how many colors were used in each panel of the billboard, so this may be a good question to check on as well.
For some good tips on design and to get an idea of the types of specifications you'll be dealing with (but again, be sure to ask YOUR printer for their specs), take a look at these two links from Lamar Graphics. I don't have any connection with the company, but they are all over the U.S. so they are a good starting reference point.

Go to Creative Lab->Everyone is an Artist for some great hints about colors, graphics and fonts to use in billboard design.
For some examples of technical specifications, look at this part of their website:

  • Problems with some fonts, need help!

    Hi everyone,
Recently I need to create some documents in Pages and I found some problems with some of the fonts. Apparently some fonts when the font size is increased the spacing between characters gets reduced and ooks very weird.
    http://img109.imageshack.us/i/screencapturem.png/
I've tried all type of configs in pages and i'm really clueless what this is.
Can anyone please give me some pointers?
    Thank you in advanced,
    Prismer

This leaves several files instaled. Among them are the preferences files. If you re-install with existing preferences files, these one aren't replaced by new, clean, ones.
Right, uninstalling the application does not necessarily uninstall its preferences. (Indeed, previous InDesign and QuarkXPress betas had the problem that they preserved the older preferences when the newer betas were installed which could lead to crashes.)
Arguably, system software has to have smart install / uninstall so that all the files installed by an application are removed, but then what about fonts and / or profiles installed with the application, which some other application may be using as a resource.
I don't know, but the word 'simple' and the word 'software' don't seem ever to be synonyms .

  • I am lost and need some guidance

Please bear with me for being so explicit on my posting, but I don't have a simpler way. But need some ideas to create a simple, safe workflow that includes back up.
I only use my Int HD (350GB), to install and run Apps; otherwise, I use Ext HDs. I have approximate 150GB of images, and another 50 GB of misc. files.
I have the following Ext HD:
1- 2 TB FW/USB -got a great deal brand new
2- 1 TB FW/USB already in use. I have 1 Partition (250 GB) while I was using Tiger
I used it to create a Boot up Dr, backing up Apps. But no longer use it.
I have been having some difficulty with this drive; sometimes it doesn't get recognized or stays on. I will be replacing the electric power cord, and all cables.
I am not sure if I should invest the time to re-format the entire drive and eliminate the Partition or just leave untouched.
    3- 500 GB USB - secondary copy (non-RAI)
4- 350 GB USB - third copy (off site)
I am trying to decide how to use these drives, and hopefully, without the need to re-formatting them, but who knows. In addition, I would like to take advantage of TM for my back up.
5 Which DR should I set up as my destination DR for TM?
If I use the 2 TB is it better to set as RAID 0,better performance but if one drive fails, I'd be SOL, right?
On the other hand RAID 1, the redundancy factor would increase overhead. Any suggestion.
I also use Lightroom and would like to know how I should set it up to back up LR (non-image).
And lastly, about TM can I be select a specific source files for back ups? And can I back up different source Drives?
Is there a way that I could prevent TM not to back up Cache, because it will increase the overhead
Again, any suggestion would be appreciated

    crossover wrote:
I called Applecare yesterday and told me that TM only works with the Internal HD, no other DR, not sure about that. I usually get better answers here than wasting my time calling them, go figure.
That's just plain wrong. Some of them don't seem to know much about Time Machine except the basics (and, to be fair, most Mac users don't have data on external drives, so it likely doesn't come up much). But yes, TM will back-up any internal or directly-attached external USB or F/W drive/partition, as long as it's formatted Mac OS Extended. In fact, in most cases it will do that by default -- if you don't want something backed-up, you have to specifically exclude it.
I have never tried TM and not sure if that would be a good workflow or just use other Apps like the one you mentioned
There are advantages and disadvantages to TM, as with any other app. One of the main advantages of TM is the very fast, hourly, incremental backups of additions and changes. This gives you an excellent chance of recovering a previous version of something that was changed or deleted in error (such as "Save" instead of "Save as"), or somehow corrupted.
And there really isn't any workflow, once it's set up (which is also quite easy). TM just does it's thing.
First it does a full backup of everything on your system (less some caches, system workfiles, logs, trash, etc.). That, of course, is a lengthy process.
Thereafter, it will do an incremental backup hourly, as long as your Mac is awake and the external drive is attached.
It automatically "thins" your backups, including when the TM drive/partition gets near full, deleting the oldest backups to make room for new ones.

  • Need some help and guidance please!

    Hi everyone,
I desperately need some help because I am at my wits end.   In September I purchased a Compaq Presario CQ60-450US.  Shortly after purchasing, I fresh installed Windows 7 Professional.  Recently I decided to tried to dual boot ubuntu on the machine only to find that the installation failed because of CD read error.  I know for a fact that the CD is not the issue because I have used this CD three other times to install ubuntu thus I came to the conclusion that the CD/DVD drive was bad.
I called HP support to get a new CD/DVD drive replaced only to spend 2 hours on the phone with a individual that decided to troubleshoot first trying to install ubuntu remotely (I informed the indiviual that the remote session would end), then by playing a DVD and "skipping throughout" the movie.  He/she said that she could see no issue.  (no diagnostic was run)I informed the individual that I had issues with buring as well.  He/she proceeded to go online and install software asking me to demonstrate the issue after which the call got dropped mysteriously.
I called HP support back and told them that I am having an issue now burning.  They proceed to connect remotely and look at the software the previous support individual downloaded and said that the software was not supported by HP.  I informed the individual that I give permission to install any software needed to troubleshoot but the individual said that I could not be suppoted because I wasn't using the OS installed by HP.  I was instructed to recover my machine to the OS that was installed with the machine if I was to continue to get support.
I informed the individual that the drivers and software are the same for either OS considering the CD/DVD rom is a plug and play device.  The individual refused to help and told me I had lost my warranty because of my decision to install an OS directly from Microsoft or a third paper vendor.
That is where I stand.  HP is refusing to give me support because I am not running their Vista Home edition even though my issue is hardware.  I cannot find any warrent information stating that I need to have the original operating system installed on the machine to receive support.   Can anyone point me to a reputable division that can help me with my issue?  I feel I was just thrown aside so that they don't have to initiate a repair.  If not has anyone filed a compalint against this outrageous support requirement?

    Dear ndjumpball,
I would like to say that I have some good -- or at least encouraging -- advice.  Regretfully, I do not.  I had issues with my dv7 practically since purchasing it a year ago specifically so I would have a reliable computer for school.  My first problem: I bought my laptop a mere 7 weeks before HP started offering their free upgrade to Windows 7.  Consequently, I was forced to purchase the full installation retail or continue to deal with the wonton freezes and system failures that inevitably occurred while I was working on homework -- courtesy of HP's installation of Vista Home Premium 64-bit.  Thankfully, I was able to purchase a copy of Windows 7 Professional 64-bit through a significant student discount offer from Microsoft, and I had my new OS downloaded the evening of October 23, 2009; I had to give their servers time to free up, since it seemed like everyone and their dogs were also downloading what the reviews posted on CNET and PC World touted as being more reliable.  I recall (I can't remember exactly which site this appeared) the statement, "Windows 7 is what Vista should have been from the beginning."
I was all excited and happy now that I had a laptop for school that had everything I was looking for:  decent size hard drive, a fair amount of RAM, great 17.3" display with awesome colors, and a CDRW/DVDRW/Blu-Ray disk drive in the bay.  Not only was I very satisfied with the hardware; it also came with a decent host of software that are thought was pretty cool, too.  It came with CyberLink's DVD Suite 6 that I could activate simply by touching a soft button above the keyboard.  Aside from Vista Home Premium crashing on me at the most inopportune times, I was exceedingly happy with my $1000 purchase and investment.  Then came the "upgrade" to Windows 7 Professional 64-bit...Because I didn't have a "compatible" version of Vista, I had to do a full ("custom") install.  In other words, I lost all of the cool features I originally bought the machine for in the first place...no more cool one-finger's brush software activation (still don't have that working), and HP Chat Support told me the same thing they told you.  The following is a direct copy/paste quote from an email response I received from HP Total Care:  "In order to help you relevantly I would like to request you to please revert back to Vista operating system and check whether the issue is persisting or not.  If the issue is still persisting after reverting the operating system back to vista then we need to perform system recovery."
After pursuing my case for 6 months -- finally getting my case escalated to two HP Customer Care Case Managers in Texas/Oklahoma -- the best "customer support" I received was what I'm sure was a truly heartfelt and sincere apology...  Oh, neither case manager was "able" to send me either the true upgrade disks that would have preserved the features purchased, nor were they willing to send me a stand-alone installation of the CyberLink’s DVD Suite 6 that is currently offered with the HP Pavilion dv6t Quad Edition series.  (In massive frustration and anger, I bought the CyberLink’s DVD software - $100 I didn't have to spend on something I had already bought...)
A month later (late March), MY CD-RW/DVD-RW/Blu-Ray drive stopped working.  After an hour online with Customer Care, I had finally convinced the rep that the drive was working fine after my ditching Vista Home Premium, and that its failure had absolutely nothing to do with Windows 7 Pro.  After giving the guy my credit card number as security, I had a replacement drive shipped to me.
My personal recommendation:  clearly state that the hardware failure had nothing to do with whatever software or OS you chose to install.  Bottom line:  your computer is only 8 months old and is still covered under warranty, they can replace the defective part, or you can return the entire machine.  You probably want to be the "Nice Guy" but you need to remind them that you have other brands available to purchase.
I don't know if that helps or not, but thank you for giving me the opportunity to vent!  :-)

  • Some fonts are not installing

    Hey,
I've used the Font Book application to install fonts for a while but I notice that it doesn't install all the fonts I ask it to. These are all in .ttf format. What I find strange is the fact that before I got a new harddrive, the font that isn't installing installed back then and I'm getting it from the same website.
Please could someone help me with this ASAP? I need this font for use with Motion 4.
    Cheers
    Leon

Here's a new bit of info I have found out about the problem
I notice that the preview image in the List View mode wil only show the proper preview of the fonts that will install whereas the Fonts that won't install will just show the File Type Icon, I've attached some screenshots so it's easy to understand
    Cheers

  • Some fonts are not working

I need to use Times or Times New Roman font, and the apostrophe/quotation mark key just turns out a weird combination of letters instead. The key works in some fonts but not others. How can I fix this?

    Hi Bethanning,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
You may want to look at Using and Managing Fonts in Mac OS X PDF. It says,
"Mac OS X is not limited to Roman alphabets
because it takes advantage of Unicode.Applications
that support Unicode can select characters from a
set of up to 65,636 different symbols. This is almost
one glyph for every possible character in every
written language. Most fonts don’t need so many
symbols, but many non-Roman fonts used in Asia
and the Middle East can have many thousands of
    different glyphs.
To make it easy for users to select keyboard
layouts that correspond to different fonts,Mac OS X
provides an Input menu. This shows different
keyboard layouts so you can use the same keyboard
to select different glyphs. You can turn different
    keyboard layouts,including the new Character
Palette,on and off through the Input Menu tab in
the International pane in System Preferences."
Not every font has the same symbols in the same places (sometimes symbols my not be included.

  • Some fonts are in library fonts folder,  but not in font book or in illustrator

So I have some fonts that are in library>fonts but do not appear in font book or illustrator font list
also no fonts names listed in attributes, when you highlight font in the artwork, (but does list whether it is regular/bold!)
-also when I go about illustrator(11) it gives me info but locks program and have to force quit

Type 1 (PostScript) fonts require 2 files to make them work.
The FFIL files are screen fonts which load into the OS/programs in order to show up in the menus. They should show up as Font Suitcase in the KIND column of the finder. You will also need the corresponding LWFN file which is the postscript outline file. That will show up as Postscript Type 1 outline font in the KIND column of the finder. That is used to render the font on screen and output it.
OSX needs both of those in the same location in order to work correctly. Needing two pieces is just part of the problem. The names of the files are also different. The PostScript parts usually having abreviated names.
And it's more complex than that. One FFIL file actually may have many screen fonts inside it for the different variations of the font family. Then you will need to make sure you have separate LWFN files for all of those.
I know it's confusing. The 2-piece font just asks for problems. Unfortunately that is how Adobe invented them 20+ years ago.
OSX makes it harder by not letting you open the FFIL file to see what's inside. In OS 9 and earlier you could open the suitcases and add or remove screen fonts - even add unrelated fonts all to the same suitcase
Well I've rambled enough about Type one Fonts. I hope my first few paragraphs clear up some of it for you.

    Settings>General>Accessibility>Increase Contrast

There are other settings there ...they may not be to your liking but try them all anyways.

  • Needed: Programmer font with great Unicode coverage

Subject line says it all: I need a font that:
    1) is excellent for source code files (especially Java, obviously)
    2) has glyphs for most Unicode characters (specifically, the first 65,536 ones, that is the [Basic Multilingual Plane|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basic_Multilingual_Plane#Basic_Multilingual_Plane])
It would be most excellent if the font is truly free and available on all major platforms.
Here are the minimal requirements for a good programming font:
    1) monospaced
    2) extremely readable, even at small font sizes
    3) all unique characters are readily distinguishable, especially in the Basic Latin subset usually used in source code. In particular:
         a) o, O, and 0 (with zero preferably having a slash thru it, or at least a dot inside it)
         b) l, 1, I, | (ells, ones, capital eyes and vertical bar; and | shouldn't look like ! with a signle white pixel but must be more distinguishable)
         c) clear punctuation characters, especially braces, parenthesis and brackets
    4) proper sizing and alignment. In particular:
         a) operator symbols: * should not be raised relative to +/-; the same is true of ~; all these should align with =
         b) % should be cap height
         c) ", &, and ' should be straight, not angled or curved
         d) & must not become gray when antialiased at small ppm
         e) - must not be too short; en-dashes aren't typically used in programming
         f) bracketing chars have to align reasonably with both lower case and capitals.
         g) glyphs should not draw outside their metric bounds
         h) underscore must be at the baseline instead of hanging beneath, which most fonts wrongly choose and make words jarringly ugly
I did some web searching before doing this posting, and was frustrated by what I found.
There are many alleged programmer fonts

but all look like they have poor unicode coverage.
    There are several unicode fonts
    [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unicode_fonts#List_of_Unicode_fonts]
but most are not monospaced or have poor coverage or are not free. For instance, these monospaced fonts lack Chinese unicode coverage:
and these monospaced fonts (which appear to have even Chinese unicode coverage) are not free:

    [Ascender UniDuo|http://www.ascendercorp.com/fonts/multilingual/ascender-uni/ ]
    [This posting|http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg17127.html] alleges
"There is no free monospaced font covering Unicode"
Please prove him wrong by showing me a font that has what we all need!

[This stackoverflow.com question|http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4689/recommended-fonts-for-programming] has some pretty good points.
Regarding the Unicode coverage: I doubt that you'll find a good bitmap font there, as it's simply too much.
But then again, a reasonable font rendering framework will substitute the font for a similar one if some glyph can't be rendered in the chosen font (at least fontconfig/GTK+ on Linux does that).

there is some font labels that do not  appear in adobe  acrobat and appear in the reader " appear as  boxes" and I need to work with the acrobat  can any body help

I don't know if your on a Mac or a PC.
So you need to locate the Font cache file for Acrobat (make sure Acrobat is quit) and remove to Trash/Wastebasket.
and empty. The open Acrobat back up and the font cache file should rebuild.  If your on a Mac the simpliest way is use a Utility called fontnuke and have it remove all Font caches.
Font cahces frequently corrupt  as they are in constant use.  Mayb Windows machines have something similar as Font Nuke.
