My iphone4 has recently been through a lot. I had to replace my screen not too long ago and I have been having problems with it for a few weeks now. But nothing as bad as my antenna not working. I have spent over $90 trying to get my phone unlocked because I thought it locked up (carrier lock). The iPhone 4 antenna is on the speaker assembly of lower iPhone. Make sure that the antenna wire cap connector is perfectly pressed down and attached to its connector on the logic board. It can hover over and not be in the correct position, check it. While there, check and make sure the 4 silver metal legs of the antenna assembly are seated down properly. They slide below the midframe metal plate, and use spring action to contact the plate properly. Make sure that those legs are not bent or missing, one good one in proper position should give you reception. Also make sure the right lower screw which goes through the antenna is in place, not sure if this is important, but these are all the components of the antenna. A very important component of the "reception circuitry" is a small blue colored inductor on the logic board near where the antenna wire connects. Search on Web for blue inductor iPhone 4, if this is missing it can easily be bridged to regain service.

You can take it into an Apple Store or Apple can run a remote diagnostics on it.
It's not really insurance. It does not cover loss.
It is $99 to extend coverage to 2 full years.
If you break/damage the iPhone, it is $79 to replace it. You can do do this twice in the 2 years.

If no change after the following steps, your iPhone likely has a hardware problem.
Power your iPhone off and on.
An iPhone reset, which is done by pressing and holding the home button and the sleep/wake or on/off button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo and then release.
Restore your iPhone with iTunes from the backup.
Restore your iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from the backup.

The mic on my iPhone4 has just quit also. Similar symptoms to yours in that people I'm talking to hear only static or my voice very faintly. The voice/memo recorder also only really records static.
It happened suddenly and seemed to get better after a day or two but then went completely after another day.
I'm returning it to Vodafone New Zealand shortly but will have to wait 5-10 days for a replacement. There are NO Apple accredited means to speed this procedure up in NZ.
We don't even have a single physical Apple Store where you could walk in and talk to a Genius.

Call the apple store you got it from and ask them. Sometimes in the past they've extended the 'no questions asked return' but only Apple can tell you for sure.

All computers are personal computers, a PC though is also "non-Apple" in common usage.
Mac also is platform and OS.

Extract the photos from the phone to your computer like you would with any other digital camera.
PhotoStream is NOT permanent storage and iCloud photos is in beta, meaning it's not fully cooked yet and you may lose data stored in it.
