Intermittent or inconsistent situations as you describe are the most difficult to resolve. First step you should do is be certain that you have your data backed up. I suggest that you do this by creating a bootable clone using Carbon Copy Cloner. The advantage to this is that not only is it a backup but can immediately be used to run your MBP in the event of an internal HHD failure.

The Mac OS has built-in PDF generation. Anthing you can print, you can create a PDF.
In some apps like Preview, you can do "Save as..." to create the PDF:
In other apps you have PDF options at the bottom left of the "Print..." dialog box:
Basically you have no need to spend money to create simple PDFs.

MacBook Pro 2011 doesn't charge the battery at all. Only works with the powercord. Reset SMC already. Ideas?

The battery doesn't charge at all anymore.
My Macbook pro suddenly stopped working without the cord plugged in.
And when the laptop is switched off, it switches on by its own as soon as I plug it in.
I reset the SMC, to no avail.
Any tips?

If it has a replaceable battery, then consider replacing it.
Open System Profiler in Utilities folder. After it opens click on the Power entry in the sidebar. See what it reports for your battery. If it's no longer usable it will generally say "Service."
If you don't have a user-replaceable battery, then take it to an Apple Store.

Many - if not most - websites with videos, such as YouTube, need the Adobe Flash Player plugin to view videos. If you need to download it, you can get it at http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/.

MacBook Pro can no longer see the hard drive

I've got a MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo, 15-inch.
Okay, so I was chasing the nazis out of North Africa in Call of Duty 2 when the game froze. Command-Option-Escape was unresponsive, so I held down the power button to shut the whole thing down. When I brought it back up, I got the flashing folder icon.
After yelling a few words I shan't repeat here, I booted off the installation DVD, then started up Disk Utility to try to repair the disk. However, Disk Utility only sees the DVD; it doesn't see the hard drive at all. Neither does Startup Disk or System Profiler. (The hard drive would be under the ATA section in System Profiler's menu, right? It only shows the DVD drive.) If I try to go ahead with the OS X installation, at the "Select a Destination" screen, where the list of disks should be is disturbingly blank. So according to every method I've tried so far, it's as if my hard drive has been entirely disconnected.
This was my Christmas present, and I was hoping to get at least two years out of it, not two weeks. Anyone have any idea how to get this beautiful machine back on its feet again? I'm familiar with Unix and not afraid of using the command line, but I'm not sure what to try there.

I have a MacBook Pro Retina 13" from mid-2014 that I bought this March. It's going good, except I've noticed some white spots on the left side of my trackpad, and a white streak on the right. (apologies if they're hard to see, but they're there, trust me) I generally keep my hands pretty clean, don't sweat a lot and don't really even rest my hands on the laptop. I have no idea how they got here or how to get them to go. It's really grinding my gears so I'd like to try to fix it now before making a Genius appointment.

Can someone tell me the best way to do the "Indiana Jones" effect with Motion 5?

I'm making a movie with FCP-10 and want to use the "Indiana Jones" effect for my travel documentary. Can anyone suggest a way to do this or direct me to a site that can?

Not sure what "like magic" means. But I'll offer suggestions that may get you closer to that goal.
- First, to make it a dotted line, first draw a short line, one that will be a single dash in your dashed-line. Turn its visibility off (I left it turned on in the screen shot below, so you could see it). I'll name this layer "Single Dash".
- Next, you'll draw your Bezier line as in my article.
- In the bezier line's Outline properties, change Brust Type to Image, and drag the Single Dash layer into the image source well. This will create your dashed line.
- To animate it, first with the playhead at the start of the timeline, keyframe Last Point Offset to 0. Move the playhead to the end of the timeilne, and keyframe that to 100%.
- To make it "travel" as I think you're trying to do, move the playhead to the start of the timeilne. Then drag the First Point Offest slider slowly to the right until 3 dashes (or how ever many you want) show. Keyframe the First Point Offest to that. Move the playhead to the end of the timeline, and adjust that parameter to taste, keyframe.
- Adding a Drop Shadow could help give it some depth.
- Making the Group a 3D Group, and adding a camera, moving the camera along, maybe some special lighting, could make the whole thing really cinematic.
You'll probably want to experiment with these settings, too. And don't forget you can put a Fade In/Out behavior if needed. Let me know if this helps, or if you have any further questions.

Can someone tell me the proper way to back up my iPhoto library

I want to back up my iPhoto library on an external hard drive. Do I have to go into Pictures and then iPhoto library to copy it over the external hard drive? Can I not just drag photos and albums directly from iPhoto? My concern is that when I go into albums via Pictures folder and then iPhoto library, you don't see all your photos in the albums. I never understood this.

If you go to ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library, the iPhoto Library is the iPhoto Library folder am am telling you to backup. This Library/folder contains all your images and the data files that iPhoto writes that stores all the album, slideshows, books, etc. info. To keep all this intact, you have to backup/copy the entire iPhoto Library folder.
Previous versions of iPhoto had an Albums folder with aliases to the images in the albums. This Album folder was in the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder. iPhoto 5 does not use this Album folder and therefor it is no longer updated. You will find that there are just iPhoto 4 created albums in it.
iPhoto 5 now stores the Album information in a data xml file. The Albums folder within the iPhoto Library folder is no longer used. At some point, usually after a rebuild, you will no longer have that folder in the Finder.
If you need to access photos from an album it is very difficult for a third party application to navigate the iPhoto Library in order to find the photo you need. You will have to know the date of import in order to find the photo.
There are some third party applications that can read the xml file and can navigate the iPhoto library and show you the Albums. Hopefully more applications will be revised to read this file.
Until then you will have to Share/Export the photos to the desktop. You can then navigate to the desktop to use the photos (example: web uploading from online photo site)
If your application supports drag and drop, you can drag the photo from an open iPhoto Library window into your application.
For email you can also use the email icon within iPhoto to open a message with the highlighted photo attached.
You can also use spotlight to find images in an Album...
This is what I have done using Spotlight to find my images that are in iPhoto albums without opening iPhoto..
In iPhoto, select the album, then select all, go to Photos/batch change.
Change the comments to text. In the text field I put the name of the Album.
Do this for each album.
Close iPhoto.
Open Spotlight and put in the name of the Album ( you have to remember the names of the albums or have then written down)
In the spotlight search results. click on "show all"
Under "Images" click on the "xx more" to show all the images in the album.
Make sure you have it in icon view, the icon view box is the last one on the blue images line.
Now you can control click on the image to "reveal in finder", open in iPhoto or Mail, etc.
I am not sure if this is going to make you happy and it is a little more work, but you can find images in albums and even view them in a slideshow (by clicking the play arrow at the end of the Images highlighted blue line) using Spotlight, all without opening iPhoto.
One important thing to know is you can set up a graphic program to be an external editor (when you double click an image in the library} such as PhotoShop or PS Elements. You set up that within iPhoto Preferences. Just make sure you save the image flattened and with the same name. The edits will then be relected in iPhoto when you hit "save".

Yes, you can. I just worked on a short movie project yesterday in which I added still photos to a short movie clip (caveat: I'm learning a new camera and iMovie 11 at the same time, so this answer comes by way of trial and error, not solid knowledge). After a few frustrated tries, I learned to use to Photo Browser to access my iPhoto library; then I learned you can only add photos to a project in the Project Library.
Since both methods you tried (Photo Browser and Window>Photos) were greyed out, and since both methods access your iPhoto library, my limited knowledge suggests that iMovie 11 can't find it. Apparently, the iPhoto library is the ONLY place that iMovie 11 looks for photos.
However, I just now tried dragging a photo from my desktop into a project in the Project Library, and it was successfully added. Give it a try.

Since the latest update when I enter a URL I gte this "Firefox can't find the server at www" If I enter retry it works. Can someone advise what the problem is ?

This happens to every URL I enter then the firefox box comes up and it gives you the option to try again or cancel. Previous versions worked great it has been since the last 2 updates that this is going on.

having doubleclick.net not working is good thing, it's a tracker.
However, pages that are loading and trying to 'read' the data from them will not load or pause. notice if you se 'Looking up....' while loading.
Just try F5 refresh, sometimes it by passing and moves to the 'next sponsor/ad'
Try a tcp listing program like whatsrunning to see the IP that are connecting to PC. If there are some that look suspicious ones such as accessing multiple ports or going 'in and out' / heavy traffic. Ban them by using a firewall or hostmanager file(there are several steps for this method however)
Try Malwares spy checker.
