You have a 1st generation iPod Touch.

Thanks in advance for your patience and time with a newbie:) I can sync my ipod touch to itunes no problem, I figured out how to get my music from my computer onto an itunes playlist, my problem is how to get it to stay on my ipod. I made the mistake of using home sharing which of course turned out to be useless as soon as I turned my computer off, within minutes my ipod library disappeared. What error do you see when you connect it? This support document provides instructions on how to recover an iDevice that has been disabled because of a forgotten passcode. Yes. You can set the payment method to "None" once you log into iTunes on your PC/Mac. I have it set up this way.

Look at the back of the iPod. In the text below the engraving, look for the model number. The 2nd generation iPod touch is model A1288, and 3rd generation iPod touch is model A1318. If you have a second-generation iPod touch, the last release of iOS is can run is 4.2.1.

You can do it with Leopard but it depends upon the iTunes version which you did not reveal. Also make sure you are looking in the right place for purchases.
Consider buying a backup drive so you do not need to do this again. If you are going to run old hardware and software you need to live differently because yes, at some time you will find your version of iTunes no longer works. You're lucky it still works with Leopard. As you can see, some versions still work with the iTunes Store but not for repeat downloading.

iPod touches or any iDevices from Apple sync only to one computer. If you sync to a different computer, all your music will be replace with the music from the new computer's iTunes. If the music were purchased from iTunes, you can re-download them again otherwise the music on iPod touch will be deleted. Do you have iTunes backup?

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.

If problem what happens or does not happen and when in the instructions? When you successfully get the iPod in recovery mode and connect to computer iTunes should say it found an iPod in recovery mode.
