I reloaded my old iWorks 08 to my iMac's new hard drive. With a new Pages document, I can't see the cursor. You can type in text but it is in white only. Any thoughts?

Hi. I lost my iMac's hard drive and had a new one installed. I reloaded my old iWorks 08 software and then transferred my Pages documents from a portable HD to the iMac. The files open but the original text in them (they are journals) are in white against the white background. Plus I can't see any sign of the cursor. I can hi-lite the text and change its colour but never to black. Plus the photos I inserted along side the text are barely visible, as if they had been badly faded.
Any thoughts on this? Many thanks.
Richard

Richard,
You must run Software Update and bring your old iWorks 08 to the latest release for compatibility with the current OS.

Did you use migration assistant to copy over programs, documents, and settings? You can't do that with PSE. Elements is not a tidy package in accordance with the apple developer guidelines. The installer strews stuff all of your hard drive in place the migration assistant isn't programmed to look and you can never hope to find all h the bits. You must always install PSE from scratch on a new machine. By attempting to copy it you have made a lot of trouble for yourself.
You will need to download and run this:
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
and then you can go around and manually remove what you can reach. Look in applications, your hard drive>library>application support>adobe, your username>library>preferences. In the user library also delete any saved application states for PSE.
Then you can reinstall from scratch.

  • Replacing old hard drive with a new one. HP ENVY DV7 7230us laptop

I am trying to replace my old hard drive with a new one. For some reason it won't do it. I want to perform a clean install with the recovery disks. It seems the only way I can do this is to clone the old one with the new. I have attempted several times and wasted a lot of time trying to use my new drive. Is HP preventing me from doing this for some reason? Is there a work around for this?

Do you know anything about this? Now I am having problems installing the original win8 operating system, (purchased the 3 disk set) on the original hard drive, Toshiba 750g.. It installs up to updating updates but hangs at 13%. The reinstall hasn't even finished. Getting very frustrated. Your assistance is very appreciated.

  • I see that i have a problem after installing my new hard drive on my macbook pro mid 2009 version. I put a new hard drive, with all of my information from my old drive installed on it, into the computer. but now have the blinking question mark folder

i see that i have a problem after installing my new hard drive on my macbook pro mid 2009 version. I put a new hard drive, with all of my information from my old drive installed on it, into the computer. but now have the blinking question mark folder. I see that it means that it isn't reading the new hard drive.
did i miss a step between transferring all of my information from my old hard drive to the new hard drive and installing the new hard drive into the computer. I believe that i installed properly. it was quite easy.
    thanks for your help

It means there is no bootable system on the drive. If you still have access to the old drive, then I suggest you boot from it then clone it to the new internal drive. Use OPTION boot to boot from the Recovery HD on the old drive:
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Source means the external old drive. Destination means the new internal drive.

I just replaced the hard drive for my Mac Pro, and I am trying to restore what is on my Time Capsule, but it wont connect, and only is giving me the pinwheel of death. What do i do?

You will need to boot from some alternate boot device to accomplish this, if you did not initialize the drive before installing it.
If you have another Mac, you may be able to use FireWire target disk mode.
If your MacBook has a DVD reader and you have a Mac OS X Installer/Utilities DVD, such as the one that shipped with it, you can boot from that DVD, answer only the "what Language" question, and wait a quarter minute for the MenuBar to be drawn. Then examine the Utilities menu or the Installer menu and Find Disk Utility.

  • I have replaced my old hard drive with a new SSD drive. Can I restore a complete Time Machine backup

I have replaced my old hard drive on a MacBook Pro midyear 2010 with a new SSD drive. I have a complete system backup of my old drive in an external hard drive using Time Machine.
Questions that I would like to get answered.
    1) Can I connect my external hard drive to the macbook pro and use that to boot up my machine by pressing and holding down the Options key? Once booted up successfully, can I use Disk Utility to format the new SSD and then restore the complete time machine backup?
    2) If that is not possible, can I use my old drive which I can connect using a USB adapter and use that to boot up by following the same strategy as listed in Step#1 above?
    3) If neither options are possible, do I need to use a bootable USB drive for Mavericks OS X to boot up the machine,
I have Mavericks OS X ( 10.9.6) and I do not have a DVD of the OS.
    Any help is appreciated.

Let me first document the steps that did not work and then I will document the steps that worked.
    1) Replaced the hard drive with SSD.
    2) Connected the original hard drive using a USB adapter to the MacBook to make it behave like an external device.
    3) Powered on the machine and on hearing the chime pressed Command-R to start in recovery mode.
    4) Chose the Disk Utility option to erase and format the SSD. The format chosen was Mac OS Extended Journaled.
    5) Once the formatting was done, then clicked on the "Restore" tab in Disk Utility
    6) In the Source field, dragged my original hard drive from the left pane and placed it in the field
    7) On the destination field, choose the new SSD drive. Clicked on "Restore". Gave me a warning, accepted the warning and the restore was under way.
    8) I had 236 GB to restore so took 3.5 hours before it was done.
    9) Disconnected the external hard drive ( my original internal HDD), shut down the machine and powered on again.
    10) Heard the chime and after that it was a white screen with no Apple logo.
Was visibly upset and started thinking what my next move will be. Then tried these steps
    1) Again powered off the machine.
    2) Connected my internal HDD once more as an external drive
    3) Powered on and on hearing the chime, pressed Command-R as before
    4) Once the OS X utilities screen popped up, this time chose Install OS X
    5) Erased the contents of SSD once more and reformatted it using Mac OS Extended Journaled.
    6) Installed OS X by following the prompts.
    7) Once the OS was installed, I was presented with an option on how to transfer data to this new Mac
    8) Chose the option to move the data from my original HDD.
    9) Took another 3 hours to move the data.
    10) Removed the original HDD once the transfer was complete, powered down the machine and started it once more.
    11) Booted successfully and all my content is now accessible on the new SSD.

  • Old user files magically show up on new hard drive with 10.6 installed.

My daughters' hard drive crashed and we never backed up any of her files anywhere. She was running 10.4 on that drive. I installed a new unformatted drive and installed 10.6. When everything was up and running, she showed me a good portion of all her old music, and other files created with iWork, on the crashed drive, were on the computer with the new drive. I did not install any of these files and she didn't either. There was no time machine installed on the old drive so there was no backup files installed during the 10.6 install.
So my question is; Where were these old files at and how did they magically show up on the new hard drive? Were they saved somewhere on a non volatile memory chip? They seem to be old versions of files she had saved on the old crashed hard drive.
    Thanks

If by "new PC" you mean a Windows based machine you do not want to format the drive for Mac because Windows cannot read Mac formatted drives (not without extra utilities). I'm running an older system so I'm not as up on the capabilities of Snow Leopard. For PC use you will want NTFS or FAT32 format except Macs cannot write to NTFS without extra utilities (not sure if this has changed with newer OS)... I just use FAT format for compatibility with PCs (on my flash drive).

  • How do I replace my old internal hard drive with a new one?

I just ordered a new 1TB hard drive to replace my very small hard drive in my 17" MacBook Pro.
I've looked around at some of the discussions and apparently I need to format the new hard drive first.  I am not so great with this techy stuff.  Can someone briefly help me and explain exactly how I am supposed to do this?  Like I take my old hard drive out first put the new one in.... format it.  Take it out put the old one in... somehow copy it... agh confused...
    Help?  Thanks.

If you have a time machine back up of your current drive you can do this
Shut down your computer, install the new drive. While the computer is off plug in the external hard drive that you have your time machine back up on. Hold Option key while the computer turnes on, let go of the option key once you get a grey screen. Shortly after you'll see  a list of bootable drives, select the one that has your time machine back up on it and boot into that drive.
From there go into disk utility, format your new drive too, osx extended journaled ( I think, double check that, its been awhile since ive had to do this), hit format
Exit disk utility and then you can use time machine to copy all your exisit data to the new hhd and then your pretty much done.
There is also a program called Carbon Cloner that will do esentially the same thing however I've never uesed it.

  • Migrating old ibook's files on an external hard drive on to new iBook

I have an old white iBook G3 500 with a power adapter connector problem. Since I can no longer plug in the power adapter I transferred all of the old iBook's files to a bootable external firewire hard drive using the program Super Duper, which copies all files including system and hidden files. I then connected the hard drive to a G4 tower and booted it from the external drive. All of my files and applications worked fine.
Today I received a brand new iBook 14 Inch G4 1.42 GHz. When I start it up I would like to transfer all of the files and applications from the external drive. Can I just connect the external drive and tell the new iBook to transfer all of the files?
I have used the set up assistant once or twice before using firewire target mode, but because I use it so seldomly I want to make sure this was a proper way to migrate the data and applications from my old machine.
    iBook 14 Inch G4 1.42 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Can I just connect the external drive and tell the new iBook to transfer all of the files?
Yes, assuming the external drive is a bootable clone. If it won't boot the old iBook, then the clone needs to be redone in such a way to make it bootable. It probably won't boot the new iBook unless it has 10.4.4 on it.

New iMac and not a computer whiz.  I have a new iMac with an external drive.  I am trying to load an old Mac game on it.  The Age of Empires icon tells me to drag it to the hard drive icon.  Where is that?  I have tried finder and launch pad.  No luck.

Choose Computer from the Finder's Go menu and find the internal drive.

  • Copied files from old hard drive to new hard drive now I have 2 logins how do I merge the 2 logins into 1

New to apple computers.  have been repairing windows pcs and laptops since the dos days.  mobo on imac went bad. got a new new aio with 10.8.5.  pulled hdd from imac and copied files to new hdd. now I have 2 logins.  how do I merge them into one login.

There are different ways to merge user accounts. One of them is to copy all the files of one user account to the Shared folder you can find in /Users. This is a read and write folder for all users, so you just have to log into the other user account, go to that folder and copy your files to the user account.

  • Reinstalling Windows 7 to New Hard Drive with only the Win 7 Upgrade Disc?

So I have an e9180t which like clockwork freezes up after about an hour or two after booting up.  I thought it might be the curse of the bad motherboards they came with,  but I am hoping it is something else so testing everything I can.  I noticed it does not freeze up when booted in safe mode with networking.  The hard drive did fail the SMART test so I am wondering if it's time to replace it and if that has something to do with the crashing.   I can move cursor,  but no apps will open and eventually everything becomes unresponsive causing be tohit the power button to reboot.   I already stopped all unnecessary start up programs and it still will freeze in non safe mode.
The PC came with Vista and I believe that's what is on the backup partition on the HD.  I do have the Win 7 Upgrade disc from HP.  My questons are-
    1.  If I buy a new HD will the 7 upgrade disc be enough to install full version of Win 7?
    2.  Anything else I need to do when I install new HD besides reactivate Windows?
    Thanks.
    This question was solved.

    Hi Mike,
Did you create an HP recovery disc set for reinstalling the factory image when the HDD is replaced?
It sound like you may have a problem creating the recovery discs now.
A Smart HDD test failure points to a failing HDD. The symptoms you are experiencing are most likely caused by this fact. You may also have a motherboard or other hardware problem.
You have the Win 7 Upgrade disc and product key.
I am fairly sure the Win 7 upgrade has to be initiated from within Win Vista. The Win 7 upgrade is a full install of Windows so that is not the problem. But it may not run setup unless you start the upgrade in Win Vista. Normally a Win 7 upgrade is started within the current operating system, Win 7 setup validates the existence of a qualifying operating system, and then prompts a reboot to finish the upgrade installation.
You can replace the HDD and try to install Win 7 cleanly. If that fails and you don't have the Vista recovery discs you can purchase an HP recovery disc set here. There are three different builds available. Select the one that matches the factory installed operating system.
You may have one other issue upon replacing the HDD with a newer Advanced Format HDD. Please see this HP Support document for more information.
If you cannot install the Win 7 upgrade cleanly or Win Vista because of the Advanced Format HDD issue, you may have to purchase an OEM copy of Win 7.
