I shifted my itunes data from C: drive to D: drive on my Windows Vista laptop. I also updated itunes. Now while I have the music intact, the historical data including ratings/date of download/no of times played is all lost. Even though I did not delete any file from my comp. I have the data intact on my ipod classic (2005 model) by if I sync it now itunes would delete that data too and update it with that on the itunes where the history is lost. In effect even the history on ipod would get lost.
I am keen to retain it as it was developed painstakingly over 6 years.As the data is intact on ipod, pl help me transfer the same back to itunes

Well, having read a lot of misleading articles on the subject, I found out the solution about the missing "consolidate" option for myself. I started as per what seems to be standard advice and changed the current Library directory to my external drive in the Edit / Preferences / Advanced section of iTunes. I also ensured that the boxes next to Keep iTunes Media Folder Organised and Copy Files to iTunes Media Folder were checked. By the way, for simplicity's sake I'd already created a folder I named iTunes on the HD. I then highlighted (using my mouse) every track in the Library Music folder in iTunes and then right clicked this selection of 400+ songs. That then gave me the elusive "consolidate" command (amongst all the many other options) which I then selected. Much to my relief, iTunes then started the transfer process to my external drive. I was then able to close down iTunes and delete the iTunes Media files on my C: drive (knowing I could always restore them from Trash if everything went wrong) and thereby saved about 5 meg. I restarted iTunes and it works - all my music files are on my external drive and provided that's connected up I'm ok. I had one music video file and I moved that separately simply by highlighting it, right clicking on it to get access to the consolidate option and letting iTunes move it across.

You may have to try deleting all the music from your phone (by going to Settings>General>Usage>Music, swipping All Music and tapping Delete), then sync it all back on with iTunes in order to fix this.

I have a macbook pro with lots of music in itunes on my new Macbook Pro
I want to move all my music from the 2 different itunes/computers to 1 single itunes on a new pc and configure my iphone and ipod to it as well
How do I go about doing it without having to pay £30 or however much it is to do it?

Copy all of your content from your two computers onto the one computer you want your new merged library to be on. To do this, go to ~/Music/iTunes and copy that entire folder to an external drive such as a hard drive. Repeat for your other computer. Then go to the merged library computer and connect your external drive. In iTunes, go to File > Add to Library and select all the content.
Then just sync your devices. iTunes will have to erase all of the content on your devices and then replace it with the content on the computer you are syncing the device with, but since all of your content will be on that computer, it won't make a difference.

Upgraded from ios4 to ios 6 and lost all apps i had downloaded and some photos?

A few comments:
You will eventually be able to retrieve all your apps. You will be able to go to the App Store on your iPad, click "Updates" in the lower right, click "Purchased" and re-download them from there (but be careful - download them one at a time).
It sounds like the reason the photos and apps did not appear is you may have run out of memory on the iPad. The new iOS offers more features, and is somewhat bigger than the old. Check Settings > General > Usage and see how much space you have left and what the big space consumers are. You should do housekeeping to get an absolute minimum of 10% of the space on your iPad free. For example, if you have a 16GB iPad, you would need absolutely no less than 1.6GB free.
You said "I do not dare doing another restore ...". On the contrary, you should update your iOS at every opportunity to avoid these giant updates such as you just did. You went from iOS 4 to 6, which means it's been over a year and a half since your last update. If you did them more frequently, they would be less dramatic.

My MP3s were on a networked Data Drive (Z:). I drag the songs I want on iTunes from there to the iTunes program, and it's library
was in the "normal" place (\Documents and Settings\MyName\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music ).
I copied my iTunes library folder onto an external drive and also copied the Z drive MP3s onto the external drive. I then put the MP3s
on a new computer with Windows XP Pro, downloaded the latest version of iTunes on the new computer, and then drug the iTunes
folder from the external drive onto the new computer in the exact same "normal" place as above.
When I open iTunes, my music is not there for some reason. Is there any way to correct this sort of readding all my music and all
my cover art?

I cannot find the file iTunes Library.itl ...
I have the structure you mention:
<User's Music>\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl where <User's Music> is the music folder of the profile as defined by the operating system.
but that file is not there (I looked in the preferences of iTunes in order to find the location and that is the location it stated).
"iTunes can be connected to a library in a different location by holding down shift as you start it and clicking Choose from the options to Choose or Create a library."
I can do this, but again, there is no .itl file that I can find ... now I'm more confused Of course, if I fire up my old computer, there is no drive Z any longer, so while all my music appears on iTunes, I cannot click on any as it then will not be able to find the song on the drive that no longer exists.
I am going to do a search on the old computer for that .itl file to see if it was just in some other place for some reason.

Drag it to the internal drive and then into the open iTunes application window. If the external drive contains an entire iTunes library, you can also launch iTunes with the Shift key held down and point it there.

No. Clone, using Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper!, or Disk Utility (slowest way), the int HD to an ext FireWire HD, boot with the clone, and use Disk Utility to wipe and reformat the int HD. Once that's done, reverse the process.
BTW, please don't shout, it hurts our eyes. That's what using all caps implies.

Hopefully you moved the entire iTunes Media (or iTunes Music) folder to a new path on your external drive. Copy your iTunes library folder out to the root of the external drive, e.g. X:\iTunes (where X: is your external drive), then move the media folder inside it. Hold down shift as you start iTUnes and keep holding untila asked to choose or create a library. Choose the library at X:\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl. Should all be good.
Failing that, download and run my FindTracks script and point it at the new location of your media folder.

To import music into your iTunes library on the computer go to iTunes>Help>iTunes Help>Add items to iTunes and follow the instructions
Delete the "songs" that do not play in your iTunes library and reimport them.

I've recently upgraded to a macbook Pro and I copied all data, profiles etc across from my old macbook. I have also created a second account in my mackbook Pro. I am able to play my iTunes music from the external HD in the 'old' account, but not in the 'new' account, despite trying what you've said above. On the external HD, there are two folders: iTunes music and iTunes media. I have tried selecting each of these, but both times, I get this message: "An iTunes library file could not be found in the folder "iTunes Media". Please choose a different folder." ... Please can you help?
