I spilled soda on my laptop on the mousepad

Hi
I spilled soda on my macbook pro on the mousepad. I had a keyboard protector so fortunately, that's ok.
As soon as it spilled, I turned my laptop off and wiped the soda away. Should I do something else?
My keys aren't sticky or anything but I am just worried...
Thank you

do not turn it on and take to to an apple store or AASP for evaluation.  even the smallest liquid spill can result in VERY expensive repairs.

  • Spilled soda on my laptop now my fan is acting weird.

Mostly I ran into a snag. I opened a bottle of soda near my laptop and the bottle overflowed (possibly from being shaken or soething)
While trying to move it away from the powercord as it spilled a bit of it gotten on the keyboard itself and where the mouse pad was. Thinking I was okay I kept the laptop on and just wipe it down with a tile and thought everything was honkey doorey. Sadly that wasn't the case.
My fan started to sputter at first instead of staying full blast like it usually does. I ignored until it gave a short 1 second burst of air like a car being accelerated for a second then stopped. Eventually the burst get weaker and weaker over time till it eventually no longer does that and then my laptop shuts down cause it's overheating. It always gives a continous blast before the soda attack happen.
So now I'm not sure if I need to replace the fan...open up the lap top and try to wipe down everything in hopes of getting it whatever soda was in it out or place it in rice for several days and hope for the best. The last thing I'm afraid of is having to replace the fan or....another part related to the fan needs to replaced. I tried to air clean the fan but that did little. And oddly enough if I leave the laptop off for a while it acts normal for maybe ten minutes before it slowly dies off to small one second burst again.
Any idea what I should be doing?
Update: Tried placing it upside down 3+ hours after it was attacked by soda. Did this for 30 minutes fan seems to be fine now. Will keep you posted if it last. I'm still however worried if I should just take this apart and dry everything else just to be safe.
Update 2: Havn't stressed the fan that much after leaving it upsidedown all night but hearing noises from the computer it never made before when it's stressed.
Update 3:  Never mind the fan is still shutting off and on after an hour of it being on now. It stays on for a few moments, shuts off then turns back on. Each time it does so the time it stays on gets shorter and shorter.

Liquid spills especailly soda is what will kill your laptop beside wiping off the spill you should've take apart the laptop and use something like rubbing alcohol to clean off the spill just wiping down will not remove the spill as the sugar will act as a conductor and will cause more damage to the components. As to the fan it is damaged beyond repair and you need to replace it to fix the problem. If you can't do that you need to take it to a shop to clean the board and case and replace the fan to insure everything is in working order. Failing to properly fix and clean the board and you will expect to have board failure in the not so distant future.

  • How much does Apple charge to have a laptop cleaned from spilled soda?

So my GF spilled soda on her laptop about a year ago and was wondering how much does apple normally charge to have a Macbook cleaned? She has a late 2011 13" Macbook Pro. The soda residue has been in the laptop for a little over a year, but I'm guessing it's good that the Macbook still functions (I only turn it on for no more than a minute). It also still holds a charge and takes a charge as well.

Apple will not clean it, the fact that it still works is unusual, I would count my blessings and leave it alone, The exterior may be cleaned with a soft, damp (not wet) cloth

  • Spilled soda on my Macbook--- HELP!!! WONT TURNBACK ON !!!

    Hi,
Just spilled soda on my macbook and the screen went black and I can't turn it back on.. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Yeah, I also learned about that the hard way. I once tripped over the carpet on my way into a room where my tiny Sony laptop was on and waiting for me, and splashed water all over it. I freaked and sent it to Sony repair, and they told me it needed a new motherboard, which would cost $800. The laptop was 3 years old at the time, so I just bought a new one, though I couldn't afford it, and told Sony to send the old one back unrepaired. A week later, I tried to turn it on just to see if I could get it up long enough to get data off my hard drive, and it WORKED! Of course, I don't know how much longer it would have worked before rust from the spill corroded the circuits, but at the time I was a little upset that I had just spent so much on a new one.
Another time I put my cell phone in the washing machine, and again, 3 days later, after a thorough drying-out, it worked, and this time it worked for 2 more years, with the only damage being a slightly sticky #9 key.
Since then, I've read that the key to preserving any possible recovery of a wet laptop is NOT to turn it on until it's completely dried out, and to take out and wipe off any removable parts, including battery, hard drive, memory chips, and keyboard keys, as soon as you can.
And, of course, you shouldn't eat or drink or put glasses or bottles down near a laptop. But ** does happen.
And the reason I didn't suggest going to Apple straight off is exactly what other people said -- the spill will void your warranty, and repair is likely to be as expensive as a new computer.

  • Spilled soda on laptop--right/left click not working

My 2 year old spilled soda on my HP G60 laptop last night. I immediately turn off computer and turned it upside down and cleaned it up. I booted up fine later on. Everything seemed fine until I realized my right/left click was not working. I can navigate fine with the touch pad but cant click on anything. Tapping method does not work either.

Make sure that  the pad is not turned off.
Are the lights on above the touchpad.???
Sorry just noticed that you can use the touch pad.

I spilled water on my laptop and my "i", "j" and "k" letters don't work on my laptop. However my main problem is that my password contains an "i" so i am locked out of my computer. Any ideas how I can get around the password and login. I tried the method where you go into single user mode and type in commands, however that method uses some of the letters that are not working on my laptop.

You didn't mention which version of OS X your running but there are password reset utilities provided OS X: Changing or resetting an account password (Snow Leopard and earlier) - Apple Support  or  OS X: Changing or resetting an account password - Apple Support
Alternately you can use an external keyboard to log in and change the password. Make a backup if you don't have one, it's likely that your problems aren't over. If that water continues to migrate downward and fries the logic board your macbook will be toast.

  • How is my laptop working even though I spilled iced tea on it? The keyboard does not light up but works normally, and everything else seems to be in order!

how is my laptop working even though I spilled iced tea on it? The keyboard does not light up but works normally, and everything else seems to be in order! The front of the bottom is hot while the rest if mildly warm. I don't know if its going to have a problem in the future. I wiped off as much as I could with a cloth and left it open and upside down for 10-15 minutes. Any idea if I am in the clear?

That isn't good.  The RAM is probably damaged, hopefully not the RAM slots.  This article explains why.
Never leave food nor drink near your computer again.

    HELP ME PLEASR IM DYING

dont turn it on, water / liquids migrate.
Turning it back on is BAD, damage A can lead to B leads to C etc.
Also water migrating around, especially while on, can wreck havoc worse than initial damage.
Nobody here can speculate on damage on something they cannot see.
Having repaired laptops in the past, even IF you got it completely dry, residue from water (iron particles etc), and wet spots under fine contacts is nearly impossible to "dry out", its just doesnt work that way.
Lots of people try to "dry it out", most to learn little was solved in doing same, and sometimes further damage occurred.
Taking it apart, youll just about never "dry out it out" due to the all the hidden spots that will REMAIN wet for some time, even IF you dry to "dry it out"
Make appt. with Apple store fore repair / diagnostic.
dont turn it on again.  Sorry about the spill

  • Spilled soda on Macbook pro

I spilled soda all over my amcbook pro. I then cleaned it up and it was working perfectly until the z key started typing by itslef. Now the keys are in caps when they aren't supposed to be. Also, my laptop is in safemode. It will turn on and off, but I can't log in becasue of the key problems. What's wrong with my laptop? How can this be fixed? And what is safemode?
    Thank you!

What's wrong? You spilled soda on it!!! Take it to an Apple Store ASAP before you cause any more damage. Be prepared for a big bill. Your warranty is now void.

  • Spilled soda on Macbook

I spilled soda on the floor and it reached my laptop, I was unaware of this so for about an hour it was left there. When I noticed I quickly took the case off and dried it. No soda got to the key board however it might have gotten to the sides of the laptop. I took the battery out and dried that, although it was not very wet only a few drops under neath. It has full battery and the battery still works. Also when I put the battery back in, on the laptop there is a small light that glows which usually indicates the laptop is on. But the screen is black. For all I no it could be dead but if anyone can help I could really use it!! Thanks

Hey- something similar just happened to me as well. I was wondering what ended up happening for you. Hope it worked out. I took mine apart a bit. There's no visible soda anywhere. I took it to the Genius Bar at the Apple store and the guy said he couldn't see any liquid damage either, but it'd cost $749 to fix... so I'm tryting to do stuff on my own.
After getting rid of some dust, I put a hairdryer on it for a few minutes. Now I'm just letting it sit; apparently, trying to turn it on right away is really bad, so I am going to let it sit in a "warm, ventilated area (like the top of a refridgerator)" for 2-3 days.
Let me know how it turned out for you- hopefully it went well.
BTW Camera Obscura... is that referring to the band? Haha, if so, I love them!

  • Spilled soda on my wife's macbook...and

I bought my wife a macbook last year in August.
And yesterday I spilled soda all over the keyboard.
The laptop stayed on, so I turned it off right away.
So I turned it upside down to get the soda out.
Then I took a damp rag to get it from getting too sticky.
And let it dry out upside down for a full day.
And when I went to to turn it on,
it would boot up to the apple logo..and then just go into sleep mode.
    Never got to the desktop.
Ran the hardware test off the restore cd, and it says all is ok.
But learned my mouse click is not working, but the keyboard keys are working
so I managed to get thru the hardware test ok.
    So now what..?
I'm thinking of cracking this thing open...
    Anybody have any recommendations?

YouTube has videos on how to take the MacBook apart. It is not terribly difficult.
Electronic circuit boards can be washed if you take care not to submerse any components that would not take submersion. I haven't had my keyboard off yet so I cannot tell you from experience on this model if there are any parts that won't stand submersion in water. I have had other computer circuit boards that I have successfully washed and dried. Remember, the stickey residue has to be removed, not just wiped up.
Anyway, the keyboard itself is likely going to have sticky residue in its electrical contact area. It would be best to completely disassemble it, key by key, until you get it disassembled as far as it can go then wash the components in water and do a final rinse in disstilled water. It is imperative that you have the layers with the electrical contacts separated for cleaning and drying as anything wet between the membranes will take forever to dry if they are not separated.
Again, I have not done this to the MacBook keyboard but I have don it to several different models of Mac Powerbooks and it works very well. It can be very time consuming due to the large number of tiny parts but it can also be very rewarding if you have the time and enjoy this kind of stuff.
Alternatively, you can buy a brand new MacBook keyboard/topcase assembly on ebay for $40 shipped.
If you are handy and enjoy this kind of stuff it is very doable and can be quite enjoyable. If you have it repaired professionally they will very likely sell you all new parts and that can get very expensive.

  • Spilled soda on macbook pro, where do i take it?

Soda spilled on it while it was closed and now it won't turn on, do it take to best buy (where i bought it) or the appme store?

    Hello jellydonuts3012,
Oh no! I'm sorry to hear you spilled soda on your MacBook. I would be pretty bummed if that happened to me.
As jxs2 mentioned, if you purchased the Geek Squad Protection plan they should be able to service it. Just take it to your local Best Buy store to the Geek Squad precinct. If you did not purchase the protection plan, I suggest contacting the manufacturer for repair options, or our Geek Squad can also provide you with a quote for repair.
Thank you for posting here on the forum, and best of luck!

  • Spilled soda near my Macbook

Alright so I was using my macbook to charge my iphone, while I was on my bed. So, my macbook was on the ground while it was charging. I also left a pepsi down there which I happened to knock down but didn't notice. About 2 minutes later I notice that it had actually spilled onto the ground near my macbook, I have no idea what happened but my macbook turned off. When I plug in the charger without a battery, it goes green and goes orange when charging the battery. But, my macbook won't just turn on, I immediately removed the battery and charger and left it for about 2 days and still no luck. Please, I would like assistance, since this is not my own laptop but the one that my school owns.

    Oh dear!
You can find your nearest Service Provider here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1434
Could also take it to your nearest Apple store. Or phone Apple up and arrange for it to be serviced.
