I was going to add more RAM but would it help?

I'm running a late-2011 15" MB Pro with 4GB of RAM. I use it all day in work, multiple pdfs open in preview, chrome with many tabs, terminal tabs, sublime text tabs etc. I have felt it going really slow lately, too many damned beachballs! I had decided to get 16GB of Crucial but just ran 'top' from terminal now and seeing the output below (it was turned on about 7 hours ago and put to sleep maybe twice since then), would I benefit from any more RAM?

iMacs are particular about their RAM - I stick with the two most recommended here: OWC (macsales.com) or Crucial. Both have fair pricing and lifetime warranty.

2 x 4 GB are less than $50 and they have great install videos online (under the tech support tab).
FWIW, I have that same combo coming for my MBP (in addition to an SSD drive - yes!!).

  • Equium A100-303: looking to add more RAM

    Hello,
I recently bought an A100-303 equium notebook and am lookin to add more RAM. I was just wondering if it needs to be buffered or unbuffered or does it matter?
I currently have 1gb of ram (512 + 512 as its a dual core processor) and am looking to upgrade to 2gb (1024 + 1024). I know the type is PC4200, 200 pin, SODIMM.
Also where would be the cheepest place to buy these? Thanks.

    Hi
    > was just wondering if it needs to be buffered or unbuffered or does it matter
Well, Toshiba recommended using own memory modules like PA3411U-2M1G but I dont find any information if the module supports ECC (means buffered) or Non-ECC (means non buffered)
In my knowledge the ECC-buffered memory is about 30 percent slower as the Non-ECC modules.
Its your choice what you will buy but I would recommend buying a brand name module.
I know, the no-name modules are cheaper but brand modules are much faster and the performance and quality is better as no-name modules.
So googel a little bit and you will find many online offers. Compare simply the prices

Try using RecBoot to kick it out of recovery mode. If that does not work, try a manual install, as outlined in link below. If it STILL keeps entering recovery mode, you most likely need a new logic board.

  • How do I add more RAM to my macbook pro 15 inch late 2008 model?

I am wondering if I ma able to add more RAM to my 15 inch MacBook Pro from late 2008. It currently has 2 slots each with 2GB of RAM each. Am I able to change those out with higher amounts of RAM for each slot? Or is this thing maxed out and i'm out of luck? Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks!

  • I need to add more RAM, what do I do and how much do I need?

I have an imac. It is a 21" 2011, 10.8 op system  with 4 gigs of ram. It has begun to show the "colored wheel" and a few of the programs that require a lot of ram lock up. I was told I needed more RAM. Where do I buy it, what kind do I need, and how much do I need?
Do I need to buy it in pairs?
    Thanks for the help, Mike

You have shared RAM you don't have dedicated Video RAM that is shared with your regular Computer RAM.

  • Mac recognizes more ram but no performance difference?

I purchase an extra 2 GB of ram for my macbook pro intel core 2 duo laptop for a total of 3 GB. I bought the ram at a pc store outside of apple but is built with the exact specifications of memory bought from apple.
I successfully installed the memory myself and when I booted up the mac and looked under 'about this mac' it showed 3 GB of ram so hip hip hurray i did everything ok.
However, there was no performance difference at all. Opening up music files, to video and even PDF files loaded up no faster than when I had just 1 GB of ram.
I did a mem test and an additional memory test with tech tool pro and everything seemed to be working fine.
Anyone know why I cannot see any performance difference? Actually to be exact, it feels as though the speed has improved about 512 MB but no where near 3GB.
I then took my 1GB ram stick out and just inserted the 2GB ram stick (which is the newly purchased one) and no performance difference occurred.
Even when I talked to customer support of where I bought the ram the guy said that this is quite odd and that the mac should perform much faster.
    Any suggestions or solutions?
    Thank you.
    Dorian

+Opening up music files, to video and even PDF files loaded up no faster than when I had just 1 GB of ram.+
The first time you open them, it's limited by the speed of reading from your hard drive, so the extra RAM isn't making any difference.
+Actually to be exact, it feels as though the speed has improved about 512 MB but no where near 3GB.+
RAM won't magically make your computer run faster. Adding more RAM simply stops the computer from slowing down by going to the hard drive only if it actually uses that much memory.
It just sounds like the typical way in which you use your computer requires a bit more than 512 MB but less than 1 GB, and this is really quite normal.

  • Can I add more ram than suggested

I need to get some more ram for my imac that apple say I can expand to 16gb. I currently have the standed 4gb.
In the following article from pcworld i noticed the following (especially the bold)
All iMacs come standard with 4GB of memory, installed as a pair of 2GB modules. When you order an iMac through the Apple Online Store, you have the option to upgrade the memory to 8GB (a pair of 4GB modules) on all iMac models for $200, or to 16GB (four 4GB modules) on the 27-inch models for $600. The iMac has four memory slots located at the bottom of the iMac that are user-accessible. Since two slots are empty when you buy an standard-configuration iMac, you can easily add more memory. The 21.5 inch iMac has support for up to 16GB of memory; third party companies are offering 32GB memory upgrades for the new 27-inch iMac.
Does this mean that I can technically go up to 32gb?  Is there a down side to adding more the an 16gb suggested.

Although you can install up to 16 GBs of RAM in both 21 and 27" models, I can not confirm that you can install 32 GBs in the 27" model. You might check OWC to see what they say.

  • Was Going To Back Up Photos But Returned To Original Back Up

I was going to back up my photos from my iPhone but when the options came up I accidentley clicked on 'Restore Back Up' and I was unable to stop it for some reason. All the apps remained but I lost all my photos and videos. They are very important to me so is there anyway of getting them back?

Connect the iPad to the iMac with the USB cable and back up the photos/videos to iPhoto.
You can also backup your camera roll with iTunes. See here: Create and delete iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch backups in iTunes - Apple Support

  • Was going to reinstall Illustrator CS4 but now realize I don't have a disk.

I uninstalled my CS4 version and was going to reinstall it. Then I realized that I must have downloaded the original software from Adobe and I don't have a disk. I have a legal serial number. Where can I download a CS4 copy now? I can't find it available on adobe.com and customer support is only available Monday through Friday. TIA.
    Steve

I phoned Adobe Monday morning and was told that they do not have a copy of the CS4 version to download and that my options were to buy CS5 or find someone with a copy of CS4 that I could borrow. This surprised me -- it doesn't seem like it would be too difficult for Adobe to have a copy available for people who had lost their disk.
So, as I was pondering my situation, I remembered someplace where my original disk might be. I looked and found it, and have now reinstalled my software and everything is looking good (I am such an idiot sometimes).
