I have an iMac purchased new about 5 years ago with OS 10.4.11. I would like to upgrade to Lion. I currently have a 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 2 GB of ram. Can I upgrade to Lion, and what is the best way to do so?

    From what I read here:
    http://www.tuaw.com/2011/06/06/lion-...u-2-gb-of-ram/
s long as they already have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 installed in it.All a person needs to do with that type of iMac is to upgrade/max out their Ram. They claim that an Interl iMac with Core 2 Duo is all that is needed, as long as it has OS 10.6.8 installed. They say you don`t need  the "Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor"
But I wonder about the RAM speed, the iMac 2.33Ghz uses DDR2 SDRAM,  which I believe is rated at 667Mhz. Lion maybe installed but it might be problems running smoothly or not?
Did some quick checking and the iMacs apple is selling this year use 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM.
The only thing to do is to make sure you have a good back-up, Install your RAM and install Snow Leo, then wait a couple of hours and install Lion.
    Good Luck

  • I have a CQ60-214dx laptop. I would like to upgrade the processor in it to something else.

I have a CQ60-214dx laptop. I would like to upgrade the processor in it to something else. I have read on the Internet that it is possible to swap out the processor as long as you find the right socket, wattage, etc. processor. Is there a list out there of what is compatible with the laptop I have? I was hoping to find a processor that would take it from a dual core machine to a core2duo machine. Thanks for any info you can give me!
    This question was solved.

    Hi:
According to the specs page for your notebook it comes with a Pentium T3400 processor.
According to the service manual, link below, in Chapter 1, on page 1-1, it lists all supported processors that can be installed in your machine.
    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02985882.pdf
That means you can go from your little ol' T3400 processor, all the way up to the mighty T9600 if you want to.
You are 100% correct about needing to know the particulars about the processor's FSB speed, L2 cache, lithography, etc.
Apparently notebook PC's have a much wider range of processors one can install. In a desktop for example, rarely do you get such latitude.
In any event, the only thing you need to check for you PC, is the BIOS release notes to see if any are required to support a faster or newer processor.
I've taken the liberty of doing that for you and note that no BIOS updates are necessary to install any of the supported Intel processors listed for you notebook.
There is one other tool I like to use and that is the Intel Processor Comparison tool.
Here is a sample of comparisons for you to review for proessors that would work in your notebook.
     http://ark.intel.com/compare/35581,35568,35563,35583
I am surprised that your notebook can handle processors from 2 different code names.
I also don't like that the sockets supported are not named exactly the same. I googled the difference and it doesn't appear to matter.
However, it should have either the GM or PM 45 chipset which supports any of those Pentium processors listed in the manual.
    http://ark.intel.com/products/chipsets/35509#compatibility
I believe the GL40 chipset is for celeron processors only.
So, that is basically it in a nutshell. You should be able to upgrade to any of the Pentium processors listed.

  • I've just acquired a 2007 Mac Pro 2,1 2x 3GHz Xeon and would like to upgrade the graphics card

I've just acquired a 2007 Mac Pro 2,1 2x 3GHz Xeon and would like to upgrade the graphics card. I'd like to be able to run the Adobe CC 2014 software for 2D animation work. Don't need CUDA for any ray-traced work, just want to be able to run Ai and AE at the same time and have it handle the playback. Will this card http://www.ebay.com/itm/181466634525?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&fromMakeTrack =true be a good way to go? Or should I stick with the 4500? Or is there any other suggestion or things I should know?

  • I would like to upgrade my operating system, but still have Leopard and don't know how to make the "leap" to newer software.

I have a makbook pro, running with Leopard (10.5.8).  I know that I missed both Lion and Snow Leopard and want to know the best way to upgrade.  Do I need to buy both in addition to Mountain Lion?  Will my computer even run Mountain Lion?  I need step by step instructions because everyone I talk to just says "Just upgrade it" Thanks.

    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
If you need to purchase Snow Leopard you can still purchase a copy from Apple's online store's telesales agents.[1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753) or Customer Service and Sales Support at 1-800-676-2775.] Ask for a Sales Representative.
Third-party sources for Snow Leopard are:
    Snow Leopard from Amazon.com
    Snow Leopard from eBay
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.
If you need to purchase Lion call 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775. Ask for a Sales Representative. They will check your Apple ID, and email you a code and instructions.  The cost is $29.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download.
Be sure your computer meets the minimum requirements:
Apple - OS X Mountain Lion - Read the technical specifications.
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps - App compatibility and feature support for OS X & iOS.

  • HT4623 I have an iPad 3.2 and would like to upgrade the IOS to 5 or 6. I'm having difficulty doing so, including using a cable between my laptop and my iPad. What should I do?

I have an iPad 3 and have attempted, without success, to upgrade to iOS to 5 or 6. I've tried it wirelessly, without success, and cabled it to my laptop, also without success.  What am I doing wrong?

The option to update without the computer (Over the air) was made available with iOS 5. If your iDevice is using a version of iOS lower than 5, you will need to use iTunes on your syncing computer to perform the upgrade. Use the Apple link below as a guide for the upgrade.

  • I would like to upgrade my old iMac G3

I have the orignal iMac Bondi G3 233 (1997), which I have not used for years. I recently connected the computer to my DSL modem noting that it still works. However, all applications and softwares are outdated and the surfing speed was miserable although I have DSL. I was nevertheless able to "surf".
I would like to upgrade the computer so that I can use it for surfing (nothing else expected from the computer, just surfing). In this context, some questions:
    1. Does it make any sense?
    2. I would like to clean the computer from all old, obsolate apps & programs. What should I clean and what should I leave?
    3. Can I buy more RAM? Difficult to install?
    4. What else (than RAM) should I buy?
    5. Any other remarks?
    Thanks a lot.

    1. Does it make any sense?
To upgrade an ancient 233 to surf the Net? This only makes sense if it will be used by kids, or people who don't expect speed. This computer won't really be able to handle things like Flash, any kind of movie, online games, etc. If it will be used by anyone who wants to do this kind of thing, well, good luck!
    2. I would like to clean the computer from all old,
obsolate apps & programs. What should I clean and
    what should I leave?
If it will only be used for surfing, just leave on the basics. IE/web browser, Office, etc. Anything like Photoshop or whatever can be trashed, because that kind of thing really won't run well. Games can take up space, and will probably be slow, so they can also be trashed.
    3. Can I buy more RAM? Difficult to install?
Difficult to install in a tray loading iMac? Yes. Very. You have to take out the whole logic board/drive assembly to get at the RAM, and you have to take out the processor card to get to the bottom RAM slot.
    4. What else (than RAM) should I buy?
A larger, faster hard drive. You'll need it. The faster, the more responsive the computer will be. The larger, the more files you can have.
    5. Any other remarks?
Honestly, if I were you I'd take the money you'd use to upgrade this computer and just buy a maxed out slot loader. They're faster, they can run Tiger (slowly), they're much easier to upgrade, etc. etc. But it's your choice.

  • I just purchased a IMac Power PC G4 which has the Tiger 10.4.11 OS. I would like to upgrade to Lion OS. How can I upgrade the OS?

I just purchased a Power Mac PC G4. The system has OS Tiger 10.4.11. I would like to upgrade it to Lion.
    How can I do It?
    Thank You
    Hubert

PPC (PowerPC) is the processor architecture of all G3, G4 and G5 Power Mac computers.
PPC Macs cannot run any OS greater than Leopard, 10.5.8 because after that, Apple quit developing for PPC processors and limited support for the Intel processor line only.
As for upgrade to Leopard, Yes, if your machine meets the minimum requirements of 867 MHz or faster processor, 512 MB or greater of RAM and has a DVD reader it can have Leopard installed.
To install Leopard, one must first purchase a RETAIL (black with X on it) disc.
After install of 10.5, 10.5.1,10.5.4 or 10.5.6 retail version, free updates to 10.5.8 are available from Apple.
    Check eBay for discs:
    http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=mac+os+x+leopard+retail+10.5
If your machine is slower than 867 MHz, Google "Unsupported Leopard Installation".
Tiger is lthe best choice for slower PPC Macs.
