IBook won't load Finder

After attempting to download the latest security update, our 2002 iBook will not load Finder or any desktop icons including hard drive so I am unable to open anything except Safari and System Preferences.

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Is this the security update you tried to install?
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/securityupdate20070071039.html
Your profile says you are running 10.2. The two are not compatible. You have to have Mac OS X 10.3.9. No earlier or later system will work with that one. Another version of the update is available for 10.4.10 users:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/securityupdate200700710410ppc.html
If you are running anything else I'm surprised it even let you run the update at all. It should have just checked the system and made sure you are running the required system.
Which system were you running, and which update did you apply? Did you backup your data and repair permissions before applying the update?

  • TS1702 iBooks won't load PDF files any more on my Ipad2. Anybody seen this one before?

    Hello All,
iBooks won't load PDF files any more.
I have a lot of PDF files so I thought I reached a maximum number of files or space so I deleted a lot of old files but this did not help.
I rebooted, synced, updated, restarted, etc. - everything that I can think of and I still have the same problem.
I don't remembered the last file that I loaded into iBooks, as I usually put them into collections.
I can still load PDF files into other applications like PDF Reader, but I prefer to have them all in iBooks.
    Anybody seen this one before?
    I have 64GB iPad2 and I have over 14GB free space.

There have been several threads on this topic over the last few weeks. It's not clear what the issue is, and it is not universal, but tend to effect users storing large numbers of PDFs in iBooks. Possible it has some thing to dowith capacity of the app, or specific characteristics of some of the PDFs.
You might have a look at the "More Like This" list to the left of this page.

  • Free iBook won't load or delete

Problem on iPad 2, iOS 8
Months ago there was a free textbook by E. O Wilson—Life on Earth volume 1. I tried to download it on my iPad and it would never load. It just sits there greyed out in the grid view and in the list view it has a stop button that doesn't work. Since iOS 8 I keep getting a pop-up message "Unable to download item" with the coices to retry or click "done." I always choose done, but the message keeps popping up. I went into iBooks settings and turned off syncing bookmarks, syncing collections, and accessing online content, but it still comes up.
I would just like to delete the book, but I am unable to select it and choose delete.
I went to the iBooks store and was only able to hide it there, but it still shows up as trying to download in my app. Any ideas are appreciated. Can I delete the iBooks app? I tried to delete the book on iBooks on my iMac, but no luck.
It's the book on the far right, not the one that is paused for updating.

  • IBook won't load Firewire drive; "unknown device"

That's the summation via System Profiler. It's a SmartDisk Firelite enclosure but I swapped the old 40 GB drive that failed for a new Seagate Momentus 80 GB drive. My G4 dualie recognizes the new SmartDisk setup fine. It loads immediately and I was able to access via all the utilities. Transfers work well.
But on the 1.33 iBook the green light appears on the SmartDisk enclosure, but no threat of loading. Only System Profiler identifies something, "unknown device" with 400 capability. When I remove the firewire cable, System Profiler doesn't see anything.
I had no trouble with the SmartDisk prior to the old drive failing. It worked perfectly on the iBook. My firewire port appears to be okay, since I tried Target Disk Mode with the two computers and it worked well.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I Googled and found many issues of "unknown device" related to firewire drives, but none that seemed to precisely fit this case, a drive that was recognized on one computer but not another. Both are running 10.4.11.

I'm still baffled but tonight I found an acceptable alternative, a Macally 250 Firewire/USB enclosure that I had in my closet but never used previously. The Seagate drive loads on both the dualie and iBook using that enclosure, which is bulkier than the SmartDisk but right now I don't really care.

  • 14'' 1.33 ghz ibook won't load my external drives

So i traded my old g4 mini today for a 14'' ibook 1.33 768 ram, and i have tried 4 different external drives of mine and it will not reconize them. They are formated for a mac and all work on my other new mac mini. Ive tried repairing the hd on the ibook and permissions. So all my drives work perfect but the usb ports dont seem to, i even tried a wireless mouse in one of them and it didn't work ether?
    I'm lost.
    I'm running tiger.

You may have a point there with the format of my drives, if i recall i did format them on my intel mac, so that could be a cuase too.
And i'll give those browsers a try, i just use firefox now, since safari is alot slower running then fox on my ibook and even on my intel mac. Maybe i'll try the beta version.
Also for some reason on my ibook that i just put leopard on, when i go to partion my drives it doesn't seem to have that feature on the ibook, but i can on my mini with leopard. Weird?
And on my mini in disk utility it doesnt have the burn option and mounting option at the top of the page, i have to right click on the img to burn it, but yet on the ibook i have those opitions at the top of the disk utility window.
    Also strange?

    Hello,
In most cases resetting the PMU helps.
Here is an article on troubleshooting, which you may find helps you.

  • Clamshell iBook Won't Boot from Jaguar CD (v10.2.3)

Branching off from a prior thread (https://discussions.apple.com/message/13222609#13222609) in which booting from an OS X CD was a potential solution to a problem, the problem encountered with the potential solution warrants its own thread.
My machine is a Clamshell iBook (G3), Revision B (with 64MB base RAM and no FireWire). It was purchased new eleven years ago and later ugpraded to 192MB RAM.
The OS on the hard drive was 9.0.2 until yesterday, when I updated it to 9.1 so I could bring the firmware up to date. I did this before attempting to use the Jaguar CD.
The CD in question is an original Jaguar install CD, version 10.2.3. This is a two-disc set (the discs are labeled 1 and 2) and is a retail version; my iBook was manufactured prior to the release of OS X (non-server) and does not have an OEM OS X disc.
When the iBook attempts to boot from the CD, either by pressing "C" at startup or by running the Installer from OS 9.1, it seems to be loading fine until the following appears:
At this point, the iBook won't load any further and a restart is required.
The iBook does boot an OS X Cheetah (10.0) CD as well as its own restore disc (9.0.2) and the 9.1 disc that came with Cheetah. Unfortunately, Cheetah doesn't seem to have any effect on the battery (this is why I'm booting with an OS X CD; see the posts in the other thread for details). I don't have any other retail CD versions of OS X to try (aside from a Snow Leopard DVD).
Aside from this boot problem and the battery issue (the computer won't recognize the battery and displays an "X" through it even after having charged it with an external charger) the iBook is working perfectly fine.

No. I get the "X" through the battery in the menu bar and no bars, just a plug icon, in the control strip under OS 9.
The battery is a year old and has never been recognized by this computer. I don't have another Clamshell to test it in but did verify that it can charge in a VST charger.
The last time the computer recognized a battery was about 6 years ago when the initial batteries were still in use. Both were completely depleted after my charger shorted out; they didn't charge again after I got a new charger. The batteries were healthy at the time and were able to hold 3-4 hours, which was pretty typical mileage for me on this laptop.

  • Tiger won't load in Target disc mode either!

Have had the problem of many in that my G3 iBook won't load the DVD-even though it has a combo drive. Anyway, tried target disc mode on my Tiger installed iMac and still unsuccessful. I think it's the disc itself. The installation goes through the "checking DVD" protocol and then I get an error code. Any clue? I've got a reservation at the genius bar this afternoon at 3pm but would love to solve this one on my own if possible...

It is possible that the combo drive is damaged or the BootX file already on the hard drive is having trouble. Have you backed up your data?

  • ITunes, app store, iBooks store, etc won't load and I can't figure out why. I tried rebooting and it didn't help. Everything else works fine. Help please?

iTunes, app store , iBooks store, etc won't load and I don't know why. Everything else works fine, and I've rebooted it. The problem is still there and I know I have a good Internet connection. Help please?

Have you tried disconnecting and re-connecting to your network ?. And when you say rebooted do you mean a reset ? If not then try that : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
You could also try closing those apps completely. From the home screen (i.e. not with any of those apps 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the iTunes, App Store and iBooks apps to close them, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.

  • IBook G4 won't load after latest security update, repair doesn't work?

Hi I had the same problem as someone else in this forum:
"Last night I saw that my ibook G4 wanted to do a security update. I told it to do it, and the ibook has not started since. It reset itself after downloaded, but it just stays on the booting up screen, never actually booting up so I can use it. After about two hours of trying to boot up, I turned it off, and on again, and it still wont boot.
I really need suggestions as how I can fix it. Thanks

    HI,
Ok... you need to boot from your install disk.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If you cannot boot from your install disk, try booting in Safe Mode
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck
If you have the original hard drive in this iBook, it was probably a 60GB drive? When you can do this, check to see how much available disk space there is.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop, then click: Get Info. In the Get Info window, click the discovery triangle so it's facing down. You will see; Capacity and Available Make sure you have 10% available disk space, 15% is better. Not enough available drive space can cause issues like you are experiencing.

I tried restarting it after the repair (there were some things to repair and I tried to repair twice just to make sure it didn't miss anything) but it still won't load. It says its starting the OX system, but when the blue bar reaches the end, it doesn't do anything from there. I also left it on for hours and it did nothing. My mousepad still lets me move around the mouse, the caps lock key still lights up, as the num lock key. I tried safe mode but that won't load either...any other suggestions?

Your iBook needs to go in for repairs.

  • Too many files on 10.4 Desktop - Finder won't load

    2.66 DualCore Intel Xeon + OSX 10.4.10 + 2Gb DDR2 DIMM + 230Gb ST3250820AS + OPTIARC DVD RW AD-7170A
Despite recurrent warnings, a relative kept leaving too many files on the Desktop, up to 300 files (JPGs, downloaded archives). Last week, after attempting to move/copy them to a folder, OSX crashed, and now Finder won't load; after password screen, menu bar and Dock appear, the 'MyDay' app (from Entourage) starts bouncing, and system freezes. Sometimes it goes back to password screen, and from there again to a frozen, empty finder with dead mouse pointer. Other times the spinning clock or wheel remain spinning forever.
Tried DiskUtility, repaired disk and permissions, reset PRAM, no dice.
Tried to boot off the 10.4.10 DVD, it doesn't allow to run OSX from the disc (I have a vague recollection of doing this once, but...)
Started in SafeBoot mode, finder froze at same stage.
Re-Installed OSX 10.4.10 in Archive and Install mode, same freeze at same stage.
The only explanation for the crash, as no updates/new app installing happened, is that there are, again, too many loose files on the desktop and as it tries to load the Finder it crashes. I'm hauling the machine ASAP to try with my own Intel to try access his disk via FireWire target mode but worry the same thing will happen on my system, that it will balk at too many files.
Is there a way to try to fix this without resorting to clean install (needless to say, last backup was months ago)? If I install Leopard on that disk (it comes out fine in Disk Utility) will the same thing happen as soon as it tries to load the Finder? Is there a way to boot 10.4 off a CD/DVD?
Thanks for any info or tips!

    Welcome to the forums!
Make your relative write this out 1000 times:
Performance tip: Keep the Desktop clutter-free (empty, if possible)
Mac OS X's Desktop is the de facto location for downloaded files, and for many users, in-progress works that will either be organized later or deleted altogether. The desktop can also be gluttonous, however, becoming a catch-all for files that linger indefinitely.
Unfortunately - aside from the effect of disarray it creates - keeping dozens or hundreds of files on the Desktop can significantly degrade performance. Not necessarily because the system is sluggish with regard to rendering the icons on the desktop and storing them in memory persistently (which may be true in some cases), but more likely because keeping an excessive number of items on the Desktop can cause the windowserver process to generate reams of logfiles, which obviously draws resources away from other system tasks. Each of your icons on your desktop is stored as a window in the window server, not as an alias. The more you have stored, the more strain it puts on the window server. Check your desktop for unnecessary icons and clear them out.
Keeping as few items as possible on the Desktop can prove a surprisingly effective performance boon. Even creating a single folder on your Desktop and placing all current and future clutter inside, then logging out and back in can provide an immediately noticeable speed boost, particularly for the Finder.
And it is why Apple invented 'Stacks' for Leopard.

  • Firefox won't load any pages on SmartQ T10 but will find addons and sync. Why?

Pretty much as the title says, it installed fine, displays the startup page but won't load anything remotely except add-ons and sync data. Every other browser and inet app works fine on the device, including opera and the defaul browser, gmail etc, only Firefox doesn't work.

Not a reply but an update to my first posting. The problem fixed itself after about a month or so. Everything just returned to normal and Firefox worked again. Unfortunately the story continues. After a couple weeks of working the symptoms reoccurred and I was again without the use of Firefox. Pause - - - - but the story continues. I got fed up as I was writing this very update and I tried again for the countless time to find a solution. And the good news is I did and Firefox is again working. It turns out that I had always checked the MS Windows firewall which reflected that Firefox had access to the web. I never thought to check my antivirus program suite. It of course also has a firewall through which Firefox was for some reason not allowed. Once I gave Firefox access the problem was solved. I don't know why I had never thought of this. I am embarrassed to admit it but I hope this may help others.

  • My MacBook Pro won't load any websites on Safari (except this site, Facebook and Google), Opera, or Mozilla Firefox. I already did the "Reset Safari", restarted the computer half a dozen times, and I can't find this alleged "caches.db" file to delete.

My MacBook Pro won't load any websites on Safari (except this site, Facebook and Google). Opera and Mozilla Firefox won't load any sites whatsoever. I already did the "Reset Safari" several times, restarted the computer half a dozen times, and I can't find this alleged "caches.db" file to delete. I virus scanned the computer with Sophos, Avast, and iAntiVirus and it looks clean.

Is iAntiVirus the best virus protection to use for a MacBook?
The best anti-virus protection is your own common sense, and what you already bought and paid for with your Mac. Third party products such as "iAntiVirus" convey no additional benefit, and as you already determined are very capable of causing trouble.
OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it that way with software updates from Apple.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources. Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Java can be disabled in System Preferences.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Block browser popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > and check "Block popup windows":
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but popups have devolved to become a common means to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever see a popup indicating it detected registry errors, that your Mac is infected with some ick, or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

  • Installed 7.5 now Spotlight/Finder won't load...cannot access any folders!

Installed the 7.5 update last night. After it rebooted my MacBook spotlight/finder won't load & continually error. Any ideas? As of now, the only way I can access my hard drive is via terminal in the leopard boot disk.

Had to boot from Leopard DVD...run terminal...delete iTunes & QuickTime (to get rid of current versions)...reinstall Leopard (which loaded the downgraded versions of iTunes & QuickTime). Finder/Spotlight now works.
