Ibooks author for windows

Is there any way to use ( ibooks author ) in windows 7 ?

What amazes me is that Apple is shutting off non-Mac authors, who are Windows-based.   Using 3rd party aggregators is not the answer here.  Amazon has "Kindle apps" for all Apple devices, and hence, will be able to sell books to Windows or Apple OS users.  Apple, on the other hand, seems to be shutting out a very important segment of the market (i.e., Windows authors).  Unless you go through an aggregator (and this process is difficult and fraught with problems, from all that I have read), Apple is betting on the world being Mac-based.  Apple should have a Windows port of its iBook Author and iTunes Producer programs.  Am I missing something here?

    ibooks author for ipad

No, iBooks Author is only available through the Mac App Store on Macs with OS 10.6 or later. It will not run on iOS Devices.
But you can create the Text in Pages for iOS and copy it on your Mac in iBooks Author.

  • IBooks Author for iPad, ePub for iPhone?

I understand iBooks Author creates books ONLY for iPad.
So what happens If i want the book I am working on for iPhone as well? ... Do I create 2 versions:
iPad - iBooks Author Multi-Touch edition
    iBooks - Standard ePub version
Is there a way for me to state the iBooks version to ONLY show up for iPhone and iPod Touch .... ? So I am effectivly putting on 2 different books ...
    Thanks,
    Ben

At this time, beyond the categories you can choose from in iTunes Producer/Assets, how you describe your app is basically up to you Apple will let you know if they disagree.
The Yellow Submarine book is epub and available for both iPhone and iPad....you may want to take a look at it for ideas, etc.
As always, feel free to use the 'Provide iBooks Author Feedback' menu item for features you'd like added in the future, etc.

  • I have children's books in Japanese, Chinese and Arabic that I am trying to convert into epub formats that ibookstore will accept. My source docs are in ms word or pdf format. I want to use ibooks author for this purpose. Can anyone suggest a solution?

Is there an easy way of importing the children's books into ibooks author? There is an image on every other page. The books has to be in fixed layout format.
Any help will be sincerely appreciated. I understand that ibookstore will accept only epub 3.0 formats for Japanese titles. As I stated earlier, my objective is to make those language books available in ibookstore.

The books has to be in fixed layout format
If you mean keep the same as original, I wouldn't expect to retain that, sorry.
You'd be obligated to either copy/paste in sections/blocks of text, images, etc. or insert from Pages/Word, but either way you can expect to have to rework towards whatever 'fixed' layout you need in an iBA book....that can mean significant work in some examples.
You may want to work with a sample to find out the best workflow in any case.
As for Arabic support, see this thread: Does iBook Author support Arabic...: Apple Support Communities
    Good luck.

  • HT5071 Publishing from iBooks Author for approval

I am in the process of creating a book with iBooks Author and want to send it to contributors for approval. I know how to do it if they have an iPad. Is there a way to convert to another format for viewing with a Mac or PC?
    Thanks,

    Thanks KT,
Yes, problem is that the chapters are a combination of contextual text and sound bites.
If you are able to accomplish the same result with .epub format, this would be readable on all platforms.  But you would have to use some other app, like Pages, to create it.

  • IBooks Author for iPad ?

How can I create iBooks on iPad ?

Obviously, by not investing in an iOS version of IBA and more completely developed versions of Pages-Numbers-Keynote for iOS Apple is trying to keep iOS users still attached to their laptops and desktops.
Does not suggest praise to  me!
I don't want to own and service two computers; and the iPhone and iPad are computers. Look back a few years. Both of these devices are more powerful than Macs or PCs were years ago.
My first computer  was a (in the UK) Sinclair Spectrum with a soft rubber keypad.
There were few programmes and  we mostly  wrote our own using Basic, followed by a BBC and later an Amiga!
Each was breaking techknowlogy in its day.... which is the point,  technology has an habit of moving on in leaps and bounds - we have to  keep up with it.
Apple are not  going to hold back on their aim to produce more and more high tech products.
Each person  has to make a choice in life based on the needs, their wants and their cash availablility.
The iPad has become a boon to people like my wife  who has ditched her laptop and is happy with her iPad  two  and ditched her rubbish Sony Reader for a mini iPad to  fill up with  ibooks, she  is not alone.
However, your comments were about not having iBooks Author or a verson available for iPads.
Same reason  Apple will not make downgraded iPhones to compete with Samsung  et al.
At this time iWorks was forced into a rebuild be user complaints and still does not have the functionality of the Mac versions, although I confess I seldon use it.
iBA would need to be downgraded and less functional - so its not going to happen  for years if ever.
As I said,  if you want to make eBooks on your iPad, buy  Book Creator or similar.
I think what iBA does need.. is a none Apple controlled forum to debate users  ideas etc,.!!!

  • Ibooks author for 10.6 ???

I was told that Author would work on 10.6.6 and later, however when I try to download it now says that I have to have  10.7.2.
My machines cant load 10.7 so where do I get the Ibooks Author version that will run under 10.6.8?

You can do it, but it is fiddly.
    1) Go to Finder
    2) Press CMD-Shift-G  (Go To Folder -dialog pops up)
    3) Type in “/System/Library/CoreServices/”
    4) Zoom around until you find “SystemVersion.plist”.
    5) Edit it. Your editor will tell you that it is Read Only, but edit it anyway and save it. (I used Coda for all of this tomfoolery and it allowed me to save on top of a read-only file)
    6) The two lines you want to change are: ProductUserVisibleVersion and ProductVersion.
    7) Change both of them from 10.6.8 to 10.7.2. Save the file.
    8) Start up Mac App Store, download iBooks Author.
    9) Do NOT run iBooks Author now, instead go back to Finder and press CMD-Shift-A (takes you to /Applications/)
    10) Rightclick on iBooks Author and select Show Package Contents.
    11) Open Info.plist in your editor of choice.
    12) Search for the string “LSMinimumSystemVersion”
    13) Change the 10.7.* anything to “10.6.8”. Save.
    14) Start iBooks Author.
    15) Remember to go back to /System/Library/CoreServices/ and edit your SystemVersion.plist back to 10.6.8 for ProductUserVisibleVersion andProductVersion.
    16) Drag the iBooks Author off from your Dock so it goes ‘poof!’.
    17) Open Finder, go to /Applications/ and drag the iBooks Author back to your dock. You now have the proper logo instead of the one with the strikethrough.

  • Can I download an older version of iBooks Author for OSX 10.7 (Lion)?

I had to recently format my mac (2009 Mac Pro) but because of the hardware I can't upgrade to the latest OSX and am stuck with 10.7. Is there a way / link to download a version of iBooks Author that will be compatible with 10.7?

Well, when I pay several hundred dollars for something, I expect to be able to use it for more than a couple years.
Your iPod stopped working, did it?
and no, my 2nd gen iPod does NOT do anything even close to what it did when I bought it.
I don't believe that for an instant. List one thing that your iPod was advertised or otherwise promised by Apple to do when you bought it that it doesn't do now. And I don't mean apps that you failed to download when they were issued in a version that would run on iOS 4.2.1 and that now require a newer version of iOS.
In any case, if you're that unhappy, go buy an Android device, then. But I suggest you price them out first. You may find that they're really not cheaper, particularly if you want to keep up with anything like current Android releases. I doubt anyone here really cares if you find some other product you think suits you better.

  • Ibook author for iPad mini

It seems to be a fact that a smaller iPad will come.
fixed layout ibooks, optimized for the current size will probably not be readable enough on the small screen.
anybody who has any idea how to handle it? producing a second version?

    IF..
    they get a zoom function.
And -  if it is part of IOS, or is it feature of updated ibook author? In this case all books must be exported and delivered again.
To read a book with zooming and moving every page will be problematic, however.
Actually all books must be layouted and tested on the new iPad, I guess.
Or a minumum font size muste be found, as 16 px...
if the small iPad boost the selling and the market for ibooks it is good. but to consider this technical problem such a short time after starting working with multi-touch-books is stressfull..

  • IBook Author for 10.6 or how I get Lion 10.7

I've been trying to download iBooks Author from the app store but when I click on `install app`, it says i need Lion 10.7 to finally get it install.
so, how can get this version ? or what i have to do ?
(i have updated 2 times already!)

If the latest version of that app needs 10.7 or greater you need to first install 10.7 whcih you can get from the appstore.

  • Limit of pages or file size for iBooks Author?

    iBooks Author v.1.1(190)
I use iBooks Author for work, is there a maximum amount of pages iBooks can handle or limit to file size? I will have around 80+ pages including videos, links, and interactive widgets. My current page count is 52 and file size is 60MB, plus iBooks Author frequently quits when I save and preview on iPad 1.

See Optimizing performance in your iBooks Author books [ support.apple.com/kb/HT5117 ] and know that max  book size is 2GB.
60 mb shouldn't be an issue...

  • Is there an update for iBooks Author 1.1?

Just checked in the iTunes store.. and they say iBooks Author 2.2 is available, but that I have 'downloaded' it already... but I check my version of the applicaton and it is only 1.1
    What's THAT about??

If you looked on iTunes, you looked at iBooks (for iOS) which is at version 2.1.1.
iBooks Author (for OS X) is at v1.1 in the Mac App Store....long way to go before it hits 2.2

  • Completely frustrated by iBooks Author and iBooks

I have been writing in iBooks Author for a while to produce a book. I loved what was shown by Apple as possibilities. My book contains a lot of diagrams, the source material are vector images (SVG or PDF). These images are sometimes large and are unreadable, unless the user can zoom in and pan/scroll around.
Given that iOS is PDF-based and that HTML5 has SVG I assumed (mistakenly) that iBooks and iBooks Author would support resolution-independence vector images. Indeed, it will accept PDF often, but on creation of the .ibook, it produces low resolution bitmaps. There is no decent way to create image viewing that enables a user to look at a diagram that cannot be read on page size of an iPad2. Interactive Image will allow larger images (up to 4096pixels wide in landscape mode), but to let the user zoom you need fake viewpoints that point somewhere and in all, creating something where the user can pan/scroll/zoom is ugly and a pain.
I have been looking at HTML5 widgets to see if one can get around this. But here too, iBooks Author seems not to allow SVG in those (just displays empty, so does iBooks Author kills the SVG on export from .iba to .ibooks?). SO, I hoped the standards of iOS (PDF and HTML5) woul dsolve any problem, but iBooks Author seems to make sure it does not work.
I am so frustrated that I am close to giving up. iBooks Author and Ibooks need (for me):
    - handling vector-images (SVG and PDF) (come on, Apple, how can you be so slow with supporting resolution independence, especially given Retina iPads?)
    - the ability to let the user pan/scroll over large  images that can be zoomed in/out
And I am not talking about stupid things like not being able to replace an image inside a picture element with a new image without losing the picture element and having to manually redo all the links to it.
It has been more than a half year since Apple released iBooks Author. Unless I find a way to let the reader investigate larger diagrams, preferably interactive ones, e.g. created as a HTML5 widget with SVG objects in it, or unless Apple delivers a product with less problems bugs and such, my project needs to move away from iBooks.

Thanks, but I am not going to try anything else. I have lost any trust in iBooks Author that I can get this right.
First, it means buying Keynote just for this experiment and besides that means that my images all end up in a widget (I have many inlines now) which will also not be exported properly in PDF.
I am unhappy enough that I have to buy Pages to save my project (if I had known this in advance, I would probably have written the book in TeX and try to find a decent paper publisher) and lose all the nice interaction ideas I had.
If iBooks and iBooks Author still exist a year after I have finished my old fashioned book, maybe. So far, this looks like another beta-never-to-be-kept-alive-in-a-decent-way product attempt at Apple. Stuff gone like iWeb or iDVD (colleague bought his Mac, used iMove to create a Movie and wanted to create a DVD. Turns out he needs to shell out $99 for Roxio to do that. Not a happy camper).

  • IBooks Author is a terrible program

First, let me say that I am an Apple fan. Been using exclusively at home & work (teacher) for 10+ years.
Second, I am very, very proficient with Pages and when I saw iBooks Author, I was very excited. It had a similar feel and I felt like I could do something very special with it.
After 6 months of playing with the program, I would not recommend iBooks Author for anything other than making a simple book complete with some text and adding some pictures. I feel like users of this program were misled by Apple with its simplicity of use, here is why:
    1) I lost my index.xml file (and I tried all the tricks). This resulted in me losing 50+ hours of work. And yes... I have an older back-up version, but not new enough to make it worthwhile. Back-up the file everytime you use the program. This crucial file disappears for some reason?
    2) 3D widgets are bogus. They don't work unless you are lucky or know all the ins and outs of the collada.dae files. All I wanted to do was to import some simple molecules (glucose, amino acids, etc.) and have them full screen on the iPad for my students to manipulate. I spent hours upon hours researching on google, then downloading different programs and exporting files and re-importing them and nothing worked.
    3) Interactive Images are not worth the trouble. They are difficult and they are don't end up looking the way they should. There are serious limitations to what you can do.
    4) The program is buggy. For example, I wanted to add some images inside a table. Again, this was hit and miss as some of the images showed up on the iPad while others did not. All of the images were similar and were in a similar format.
    5) Table of contents, section numbering and page numbering is a mess. You need to be very, very careful when you start chaning these around or it will re-number everything.
I could go on. It is my opinion that this program is not reliable and not worth the trouble.

I too am a teacher and have found Author to be very benficial for my students, fellow teachers and community.
Take a look at An iBuild Opportunity Preview and Part 1. I have published more than 60 books and while Author has limitations, many have work-arounds.
If you need help, I am always willing to help students learn...
