ICal Timezone Selection and Naming

A few OS revisions past timezones were named with some at times distant association to UTC standards and could be attached to an event. Type in Eastern Standard or just Eastern and up came timezones with that in their name. Simple right, if you knew the name of the timezone you were planning the event for? Seems reasonable, if you are scheduling events for different time zones you might, nay probably, knew the name of the timezone. Or could easily find it online.
As I recall you could also type the name of a city like Cleveland or Stockton, or even some more obscure places like Vienna or Paris, and get the same results.
Apple changed it, to remove any confusing references to actual standard timezone names when selecting, ahem, a timezone. Nor can you select by offset from UTC (0) known to most as GMT, which was also an available choice.
One currently has to name a city or large town that Apple has deemed worthy of inclusion, and while shock of shocks the US database of cities, towns and hamlets is fairly well populated, those outside the US  appear to have been selected by a bored intern who snuck a bottle of beer in armed with a dart and a word map.
Requiring one examine, from an example I prepared earlier, the map of Western Australia searching for a town that appears significant enough to perhaps have been included in said timezone popup menu by Apple that is also located near Grass Patch (look it up), and hopefully happens to be in the same timezone is an exercise in almost random guesswork. Take a look at a timezone map of Australia if you think they are all stacked neatly side-by-side with borders as straight and dull as a Texas town main street.
I own a computer to avoid error inducing, repetitive, dull activities that could better be done by a well trained pidgeon. It is, obviously I suppose, very irritating and ironic that it was a desire to avoid such errors that was the reason one turned on timezone support in the first place.
You also have to know in advance, or try possibilities at random, the name town or city hoping that it appears in the Apple town-or-city-name-apparently-chosen-at-f*****g-random-and-associated-with-a-tim ezone popup menu in your effort to select the same timezone as your event attendee. Proximity does not guarantee a town is the same timezone after all. Often a distant town or city in the Apple popup will be in the same timezone, while one nearby is not. But you cannot know for certain without trawling through the internet and wikpedia to work this out because most maps do not include delineations of the various timezones.
In this case Apple has made a mistake in deciding what not to do. Removing a perfectly usable, well not perfectly but better than this, existing system in place as an option was an error.
By removing standard UTC codes, or something approximating them (you know the international standard naming convention for timezones that has been abandoned in an application trumpeting its adoption of standards), instead of just leaving them available alongside the calendrical equivalent of Soma, may, may, have made the system easier for people unfamiliar with timezones. But I doubt it, it is more likely to guarantee continued ignorance based on increased confusion engendered by use of a system providing no pattern or framework for understanding the concept of timezones, and it is a pain in the rear for anyone else.
It also is part of a trend previously only inflicted on Windows users routinely of attempting to make things simpler for more people while making it impossible or more difficult to someone who knows what they are doing. I have no objection to providing simpler alternatives, just stop taking away more elegant if intellectually "demanding" ones already in existence.
Looking up what city is nearby in the hope it is on the magic list for every one horse town a client might live in instead of just being able to type one of the Australian UTC standard timezones as provided by the client, or pick an offset of +8 hours in the above example is patronising, absurd, time consuming, and prone to errors.
Is there anyway I can use the terminal to edit the pop up list of time zones or substitute a different one referenced by iCal? Or to restore something resembling a standard pop up list ordered by offset from UTC 0, otherwise known as GMT? If I could simply pick an offset of -8, or +5 hours, as examples, life would be a lot happier in iCal. Because even if I have to determine some offsets, as in the WA example above, doing so is as simple as typing "What is the time in <insert name of obscure s******e here> <name of country here> in my browser bar and hitting Enter.
Yes I know that means I may have to do addition or subtraction, but I have the Apple Calculator for anything over 2, and somehow it has been spared any attempts to simplify its use.

I've had this same issue 2 times now (I'm also on the same setup as you).
What has worked for me is the workaround listed here:
http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20070313180838582
To simplify, copy the script shown in the last post into a text file called:
correctBirthdays (no file extension such as .txt is necessary)
and save it into your home directory. Once you've done that:
1. Back up your Address Book with the 'File > Back up Address Book...' menu item
2. Open the Terminal application
3. In Terminal, type *chmod 755 correctBirthdays* to make the script executable.
4. Type *./correctBirthdays -1* and hit enter. If you're coming back from Japan, you'll want to use 1 instead of -1 to move the birthdays forward instead of back a day.
5. That's it. Terminal will report how many birthdays were corrected.
I'm guessing that this problem has been fixed in Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, and that's why musicale can't reproduce the issue.
Hope this helps!
(and I take no responsibility if you mess something up! It should work though.)

  • Multiple Bluetooth speakers - selecting and naming issues

I've recently added a pair of Bluetooth speakers to what had been an all AirPlay setup (5 AX units, 4 Ethernet, 1 wireless). Now I've added a pair of Bluetooth speakers and I'm having some issues in using them
    iPhone 5 running 7.1
The two Bluetooth speakers are the same brand, so they are displayed identically
Is it possible to rename these using the iphone so they have unique names?
Bigger problem is in selecting which speaker I want to use at point in time. The iPhone doesn't give an option to not use a speaker.  It seems to select the speaker on its own -- only option offered  is to "forget" the speaker. I don't want to have to discover the speaker each time I go to use it. Is there a way to tell the iphone which speaker I want to use? Only work around I have found is to turn off the speaker I don't want to use
    Is there a better way?
    Thx, Carlos

Just bumping in case anyone has thoughts

  • ICal timezone : set floating as default

This is the biggest headache I have ever had with a Mac and I am really fed up. Why is it not possible to simple set "Floating" as a timezone preference in iCal?. My appointments get thrown out of whack every time I change the timezone in Date & Time. I have missed appointments because of this. Never mind trying to synch to iPhone. MAKE IT STOP!

I posted this to a user that wants floating events on his iPhone. It also helps with laptops. OK it is not as good as those arrogant #^% @#(%*#$% at Apple not listening to us for 3 years asking for this, but it is the best I can do.
This might work. Create a whole lot of floating events in iCal on your laptop / desktop and put them at the end of your day. You can do this quickly by creating one event in iCal that is floating and then copying it. You do that by dragging the event with your finger on the Option Key. This gives you floating events in your iCal which you are not using yet. Then when you want to use your iPad just drag one of these events from the end of the day to where you want it and use it.
It should work. I tested it just now on my iPad and laptop and it worked perfectly. I use Lion as an operating system. I don't know for Leopard. I use a weekly view. On Lion you cannot drag from the end of one week into the next. This has been corrected in Lion. I use ONLY floating events as I travel a LOT. It is the best way for me.
For creating floating events on my laptop I don't create new events, I always copy an existing event. This way all new events are automatically floating. It took a little while to get used to it. Now it is second nature to me. Since many events are the same as past events, it also saves time not typing in the event details.
For example I might schedule playing badminton at irregular times in a week. I simply create one event and then drag a copy to the new event's locaiton. It is already floating and named correctly. Otherwise I drag a different event and just rename it.
This does not work on the iPhone / iPad / iPod as you cannot copy events. That is why you need to create extra floating events on your laptop at the end of the day so that you can drag them down when you want to use them.

    hi
    Syntax
    AT USER-COMMAND.
    Effect
This statement defines an event block whose event is triggered by the ABAP runtime environment if, during the display of a screen list, a function with a self-defined function code was chosen.
    Note
Self-defined function codes are all those that include character combinations, except for the following:
The function codes PICK and PF## ("##" stands for 01 to 24) do not cause the event AT USER-COMMAND, but the events AT LINE-SELECTION and AT PF##.
All function codes that start with the character "%" are interpreted as system functions and do not cause the event AT USER-COMMAND. The system functions for lists are listed in the following table 1.
The function codes in the following table 2, likewise, do not cause the event AT USER-COMMAND, but are handled by the list processor.

  • Can I sync a single iCal calendar only and not all my calendars?

I use iCal at work and at home. I have two calendars: work and family. I use my .Mac account to sync my two calendars between my home computer and work computer. While at work today I subscribed to several of my employees' iCal calendars so that we could coordinate our schedules. However, now those employee calendars are being sync'd to my home iCal.
Is there a way to continue using my .Mac account to sync my home and work calendars but not those of my employees??? Thanks in advance!
    Joe

Thanks for the thought. I just tried that and when I select .Mac in iSync it tells me I no longer use iSync to sync and it opens the .Mac preferences window. The .Mac preferences do not seem to allow specific calendars - just check whether you want "calendars" to sync....
    Is there another way?

  • IWeb file structure and naming system

I am trying to publish my iWeb directly to my domain (www.jessewarren.net) using the FTP direct publish function. However, iWeb is applying an overly complex naming system.
For example, its publishing not only the page names, but also the name of the Site in iWeb, after the original URL. Here's an example: http://jessewarren.net/testing/Site/Blank.html
First, I need everything to be on the domain. Then, I only need the name of the individual pages to be published, not the Site Name itself. I already have a site name, and that's my domain.
Any other advice on how to control file structure and naming in iWeb?

This is not incorrect and it is the way iWeb publishes and has done ever since iWeb 06. When you publish from iWeb to a local folder, what you get is your Site folder with your site name and a separate index file.
If you don't want your site name included, then what you need to do is rather than using the direct ftp from iWeb, select ftp to a local folder instead. Your site will then be published to your desktop. Then download either Cyberduck or Transmit for free - these are dedicated ftp programs. Then all you do is load just the contents of your site folder to your public_html folder on your server and your url will then be http://www.domain.com/pagename.html.
Be aware though, that if you are loading like this, you are breaking iWeb site structure and RSS feed will not be available to you if you need to use it.
If you want to continue to use the built in iWeb ftp, then you could try naming your site public_html and then leaving the directory blank and then uploading like this and because you have named your site public_html and are uploading to the same place, your public_html folder on your server will be replaced with your website, thus eliminating the site name.
I have tried this method once myself with my own site and it does work, however, I still prefer to publish to a folder and then upload to my sever using Cyberduck.

  • Calendar sync between iCal, Outlook 2011 and 2010 and iCloud

    All,
I'm having trouble syncing calendars on my devices and I haven't been able to find a workable solution yet. I know this topic has been covered extensively, but I haven't found anything that works.
I want to be able to sync my calendars (email works just fine) between three devices: A MBP (Mountain Lion) running Outlook 2011, iPhone 4S (Calendar App) and a desktop (Win8) with Outlook 2010.
Currently, I have no problem syncing the desktop with my iPhone (using iCloud) and these events sync into iCal on the MBP. Outlook 2011 on the MBP syncs into iCal using Sync Services to the "On My Mac" calendar. All of my previous calendar entries are single events in the iPhone, Outlook 2010 and Outlook 2011, but show up as duplicates in iCal (one entry is in the iCloud calendar, and other is in the On My Mac calendar). Since I don't use iCal as my "working" calendar program on my MBP, the duplicates are fine if it works as an interface between iCloud and On My Mac.
For any new calendar items, however, I must obviously select which calendar they'll appear in. As suspected, if I select iCloud, the items all sync to iCal, Outlook 2010 and my iPhone, but not Outlook 2011; conversely, creating events in Outlook 2011 syncs via On My Mac to iCal, but not the devices as using iCloud.
It seems to me that if a rule could be made in iCal which duplicated any event from On My Mac into iCloud, and another rule which duplicated iCloud events into On My Mac, there would be complete syncing across the programs, with obvious duplications of events in iCal (which is fine by me). I'm not a programmer and I have no idea how to, or even if, this can be done.
Has anyone else found a way to make this work, or have any other solutions?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Outlook 2011 is not compatible with iCloud, it won't work and your 'workaround' may affect iCloud clients on the same account.
    Don't use 2011.

  • I tried to reinstall iCal from Disk and get an error

I deleted info.plist from my iCal package. I had read somewhere that if I deleted that all old files in my iCal would be deleted. But instead what happened is I get an error when I try to start "2008-05-19 15:29:46.693 iCal[9051:10b] No Info.plist file in application bundle or no NSPrincipalClass in the Info.plist file, exiting logout" So then I tried to reinstall iCal from Disk and get the error "The Installer could not validate the contents of the 'iCal' package. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance"

    lizesc,
    Welcome back to Apple Discussions.
I deleted info.plist from my iCal package.
Just for the edification of other users, you should never alter any files inside of an application package.
Drag your current copy of iCal to the trash, and then follow these steps to reinstall iCal:
    1. Insert your Leopard Installation disk into the computer.
    2. The disk will appear on your desktop.
    3. Double click on the "Optional Installs" folder.
    4. Double click on the "Optional Installs.mpkg."
    5. Click on (Continue) in Introduction.
    6. Click on (Continue) in Software License Agreement.
    7. Click on (Agree) to agree to the terms of the software license agreement.
    8. Click on the disclosure arrow ▶ next to Applications.
    9. Select (✓) iCal.
    10. Click (Continue).
    11. After iCal has been reinstalled, download and install the OS X 10.5.2 Combo Update.

  • APO DP - use of tables for selections and notes

I am using APO DP V5.
I note that tables for holding selections and notes are planning area specific and have tables names such as /1APO/S1nnnnnnnn and /1APO/F1nnnnnnnn respectively.
    My questions:
    1. What is the logic for the naming of these tables
    2. For a given planning area, are the tables names the same as one moves from Development to QA to Production environments
    Thanks,

    Bob
I think the answer for the notes part of this question is here. The logic for the selections should be the same

The table names might not be the same in QA since they are created independently and dynamically. But one way to check is to try it out

  • What is the diffrence  between "Key to Select" and "Selected Key" while creating Radio  Buttons?

While creating radio buttons there is a confusion regarding two properties "Key to Select" and "Selected Key".Can anybody explain it with example?
    Thanks,
    Vimal

    Hi Vimal,
Please find my explanation as below
Key to Select: This is the unique key for each radio button to identify which one is selected
Selected Key: This holds the "KEY" of selected radio button
    Example:
Let us say we have 2 radio buttons : Male & Female
Create a context attribute SELECTED_KEY of type STRING.
Create an action ON_SELECT for radio button select event
         Now,
the properties for "MALE" radio button as below
              KEY_TO_SELECT = 'M'
SELECTED_KEY = "bind to the context attribute SELECTED_KEY
              OnSelect = 'ON_SELECT'.
The properties for 'Female" radio button as below
              KEY_TO_SELECT = 'F'
SELECTED_KEY = "bind to the context attribute SELECTED_KEY
              OnSelect = 'ON_SELECT'.
If we select radio button 'Male', we get the key as 'M' and for 'Female' radio button 'F'.
check inside the event handler method ONACTIONON_SELECT, you get the 'KEY' of selected radio button.
So, the context attribute 'SELECTED_KEY'  gets filled with the key of selected radio button
Hope this helps you in distinguishing the 'KEY TO SELECT' & 'SELECTED KEY' .
    Regards,
    Rama

  • Partition Name in Select and Group-By

Is there a function that returns the partition name a row is stored in? I'd like to use it in a SELECT statement, if it exists.
The goal is to get row counts per partition to determine skew on a hash-based partition (otherwise, I'd just select and group-by the partition key). I want to do something like this:
    SELECT PARTITION_NAME, COUNT(*) as PER_PART_COUNT
      FROM SOMETABLE
GROUP BY PARTITION_NAME;Obviously, I would replace the string "*PARTITION_NAME*" with whatever function returns that value.
NOTE: Before the forum sharks jump all over me, I did search the documentation and forums, but I came up empty handed.

    Hi,
This is hokey - but you can use the undocumented function "tbl$or$idx$part$num" like so:
    SELECT   atp.partition_name
           , COUNT (*) AS count_rows
        FROM all_tab_partitions atp
           , (SELECT tbl$or$idx$part$num ("SCOTT"."TAB1"

                                        , partition_col1 -- your 1st partition key column
                                        , partition_col2 -- your 2nd partition key column
                                         ) AS part_num
                   , 'TAB1' AS table_name
                   , 'SCOTT' AS owner
                FROM scott.tab1) pt
       WHERE atp.table_name = pt.table_name
         AND atp.table_owner = pt.owner
         AND atp.partition_position = pt.part_num
GROUP BY atp.partition_name;Note - this probably won't perform well at all... but it could be an option...

(partition p1 values less than (100)
