ICC Display Profiles

I didn't see this forum initially, so posted a question in the CinemaDNG one...
So, the simple question.
I am looking for a display profile that desaturates the screen, making the display mono.
Ideally, one with a gamma change too, so I can see a change in the grey scale, as well as the lack of saturation.
Can anyone supply such a thing?

The current workflow is nothing like printing in the '80s - our industry has
the most accurate CMS available - it has to in order to match the underlying
digital data to the various deliverable form, such as TV, film, DCI.
We can already match Ps fully to the 3D LUTs we use - we can accurately
convert to ICC profiles for use within PS.
As I said at the start I use 3D LUTs and ICC profiles and understand both.
It seems few people here use 3D LUTs, which is understandable.
My initial request on the Ps thread was to turn off CMS in Ps as were we are
already fully calibrated via our monitor 3D LUT CMS. Which is separate to
ICC profiles, and made the use of ICC profiles redundant in that particular
workflow. It seem this request was very hard for some to understand.
I do not respect manufacturers attempting to 'bend' requirements to fit
their model, especially when they have never worked in the real world
industries. I have worked for print, tv and film, so understand fully the
workflows they use, including ICC profiles, as I keep saying, but some
people don't seem to have listened to that.
I have never been looking for an explanation of how ICC profiles work - I
know how they work as I use them a lot.
What I have also found is they can be inaccurate when compared to 3D LUTs -
through the variations in rendering intent, black point compensation
settings, conversion space selection, etc. Something that doesn't occur with
3D LUTs as they are direct translation point-to-point calibration tools,
which work well for DI, but would not work for the main applications Ps is
used for.
(As a side note, a really accurate CMS workflow should never require the
separate selection of something like black point compensation.)
This is also why 3D LUTs have been added to AE as it is looking to become
more adopted in DI workflows, which Ps never will as DI is all about moving
images.
So, to sum up, I had 2 reasons for asking questions on these forums - how to
null CMS on Ps, which I now have an answer to. There is a bug that I was not
aware of. But why there is not a simple CMS OFF button is a tad beyond me.
And, display monitor profiles can't do real CMS control - they are vcgt 1D
RGB gamma curves only, which it seems a lot of people do not know. No one of
these forums was able to simply state that as a fact for example.
I'm now good to go, and know what is required for my particular needs.

  • Display profiles and soft proofing Windows RGB / Monitor RGB

    This might have asked before, but I did not find any definite answer for this. Sorry this gets a bit long.
    Short question:
    What's the difference between softproofing with Windows RGB and Monitor RGB targets? I see differences in my image between these targets.
    Long question(s):
    Here's some reasoning.. let me know when I go wrong.
    I have hardware calibrated my display Spyder 3 elite to sRGB standard. I have understood that the generated display profile contains a LUT table that affects gamma values for each RGB component, so that affects both gamma and color temperature. That table is loaded into video card when Windows starts. In addition to the LUT table, the display profile contains what? Probably information on what color space the display has been calibrated to. Does that matches directly with the LUT table information, but may deviate from sRGB in the case my monitor cannot reproduce sRGB 100%?
    Now if I have image that that is in sRGB, but the embedded sRGB profile has been stripped away, should any non color management aware image viewer show the colors properly, if it is assumed that 1) my monitor can handle full sRGB space and 2) my monitor was succesfully calibrated to sRGB and the LUT table has been loaded into video card?
    Or does it still require a color management aware program to show the image, which implies that the LUT table information alone is not enough and the display profile contains some extra information that is needed to show the image correctly? I would think this is true, as I needed to turn on color management in Canon Zoom Browser to see images in it the same way as in Photoshop.
    Now to the original question, what's the difference in Photoshop when soft proofing with Windows RGB and Monitor RGB targets
    I read from www.gballard.net that
    Photoshop can effectively "SoftProof" our web browser color:
    Photoshop: View> Proof SetUp> Windows RGB
    Photoshop's Soft Proof screen preview here simulates how unmanaged applications, web browsers, will display the file on 2.2 gamma monitors, based on the sRGB profile. If the file is based on sRGB and our monitor gamma is 2.2 and D/65 6500 degrees Kelvin, we should see very little shift here, which is the goal.
    Photoshop: View> Proof SetUp> Monitor RGB
    THIS IS WHERE the color-brightness-saturation problem will repeat consistantly.
    Soft Proofing Monitor RGB here strips-ignores the embedded ICC profile and Assigns-Assumes-Applies the Monitor profile or color space.
    The color and density changes seen here show the difference between the monitor profile and the source profile sRGB.
    I'm not sure how to read that. Assume here that my monitor has been calibrated to sRGB and the PS working space sRGB. Do in both cases photoshop strip away color profile from the image at first? What happens after that? Does in Windows RGB case Photoshop pass the color values as they are to display? What does it do in "Monitor RGB" case then? Does it assign my monitor profile to the image? If it does, does there also happen conversion from one color space to another? In either one conversion there must happen as the soft proofing results are different. Does either one cause "double profiling" to the image as the monitor is already calibrated?

    Windows defaults to sRGB if you don't calibrate your monitor so untagged sRGB files should display (more or less) correctly in applications that don't know about color management on systems with uncalibrated monitors.
    When proofing against Windows RGB you're proofing against sRGB, it will show you how applications that don't know about color management on an uncalibrated monitor will show the image. This is what you proof against if you want to see how the image will display in web browsers.
    When you proof against Monitor RGB, Photoshop will assign your monitor's icc profile to the image which tends to be utterly useless most of the time.

  • Display Profile location in 10.8

    I've created a new display profile under the Color tab in Display options.  If I highlight the new display profile name, it tells me the location is ~/Library/ColorSync/Profiles.  However, I'm not seeing it in there.  Am I missing something here? Is the file hidden?  I'd like to find that icc file and copy it to a few other machines of the same make/model.

    Open Finder, in the menu bar click on Go, hold down the Option Key [alt] the Library folder will appear

  • Factory Display Profile Trashed By Accident

    I please need your help. Today I thought I'd re-calibrate my display, did a little housekeeping and I accidentally trashed the iMac G5 factory icc profile. Now when I go to calibrate the display I get: The factory profile for the display could not be found. The display has gone from gorgeous to all washed-out.
    Does anyone know where to find this specific profile on the iMac G5 install disc or do I find it on the Tiger install disc? I have a great 3rd party program called Pacifist which allows one to extract files from the install discs without doing an archive and install; I just can't seem to find it. One more thing, I also need to know where to put this file back into the system, that's if it can be found and extracted. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
    All photography editing has unfortunately been suspended for now. I need that profile...

    FWIW, I had to do an Archive and Install from the Tiger disc. Couldn't find the specific iMac profile anywhere using the 3rd party Pacifist application, although that app is excellent for extracting other files. It must have been buried somewhere deep within the system.
    So....the lesson learned is to be extremely careful when cleaning out your old display profiles or the calibrator for the display will no longer function. By all means, keep the iMac profile. I thought it was a profile I created, now I know it wasn't.
    It's nice to have things back to normal!

  • Best display profile for video editing

    Among the choices you see under Display Profile on a Mac, what is considered "best" choice for video editing, so that you can assess color, exposure, etc. in your footage as you edit? I have always used Adobe RGB (1998), but realize that I have no knowledge about whether that's a good choice.
    What do the 'good' editors use (to differentiate them from guys like me)? Do top editors calibrate their monitors for video editing? Any insights into this would be greatly appreciated!

    there is only one setting for Final Cut; Generic RGB
    This is an apple stipulation, its how Final Cut must be set up, choosing any other profile will cause problems with any out put files you create.
    Do top editors calibrate their monitors for video
    ICC colour management is designed and can only be used for still image files eg. so while you can calibrate a computer monitor it can only be used with still image files; TIFF CRW JPEG PSD. ICC profiles are not recognised by Final Cut Pro or QuickTime.
    The colour management system used in video involves using video scopes, an accurate PAL or NTSC colour monitor and tools like the 3 way colour corrector.

  • Interface/Gamma issue - Display profiling

    If you profile/calibrate your display (with professional software) to Gamma L* - darkish, grey boxes appear in some application-windows. Never happend in Tiger so I figure it's a Leopard issue.*
    If you use Gamma 1.8, the Apple default, Photoshops windows (in my case) look perfekt. With Gamma 2.2 they're barely noticable (pretty much only if you know the boxes are there).
    All the other settings you can choose while profiling - like temperature, luminance, chromatic adaption, profile-type etc. don't influence windows in this way - but as soon as you change the gamma those boxes appear.
    I would very much like to know how you guys deal with it - do you profile your display to 1.8/2.2 (like a CRT) OR do you use L* and live with the boxes OR have you profiled your display properly/with L* but you don't have this nuisance? (!?)
    Any help/info would be greatly appreciated.

    *So here's what I think happens (+ my idea to solve the grey-boxes issue):*
    Some applications use the monitor-profile to draw their interface. Like Photoshop and Graphic Converter. (The only 2 I've installed, I'm sure some video-editing-applications, even players are concerned that's maybe the reason some people think it's 'random'). I think these apps do so to immediately can reflect a change in the profile, without restart.
    Now Mac OS X Leopard seems to not allow these applications to do so in certain parts of the interface. (Must be new, that's why there were no issues with Tiger) The window itself is drawn by the OS. That's the reason only elements like the text and buttons are affected.
    And the problem is that the OS uses its 'Generic RGB Profile.icc' which contains Gamma 1.8. So if you calibrate your display with Gamma L* (which you really should do and most profiling-software does by default) those grey boxes appear in said applications.
    The solution is easy. Replace the system-rgb-profile with one that supports L* - like the eciRGB profiles.
    To do so you have to rename the .icc file in finder but also edit the information inside (which can be done with the ColorSync Utility). Then copy it to the System/Library/ColorSync/Profiles folder.
    *After that the grey boxes dissapear and everything is back to normal.* There's some difference in the tabular data like the CMM and a chroma-entry, so you might want to re-write your display-profile just to make sure everything's alright.
    I haven't seen anything yet but could imagine that the rendering of webpages in safari might be affected. Or rather some webbrowsers' without colour management. (Just a theory, hopefully not...)
    *Problem 1:*
    Some Adobe apps can see that the current system-profile is identical to your working-space-rgb and reset your rgb-choice to the Generic RGB profile after a restart. (Without changing the 'Colormanagement SYNC'd icon/setting.) This probably could cause trouble if you export or open files.
    Solution:
    Use a different profile for your system than your Adobe-RGB setting. I used the 'L-Star RGB v2' for the system and the 'eciRGB v2' for Adobe. They're technically identical but for some reason Photoshop and esp. Illustrator now respect my choices and don't reset anything. Works fine for me.
    *Problem 2:*
    Besides the aforementioned chroma-entry in the Apple default profile (which loss shouldn't cause any issues) there's also the localisation information. Because the profile is named differently in different languages of OS X. I haven't found anything causing trouble (probably because if the profile isn't found it resets back to the english version by default).
    Solution:
    This would be easy if someone knows about a .icc file editor. If we could add those localised names from the Apple profile no application would ever know. I've only found hexadecimal editors but won't put something like that on my machine, especially since everything works fine.
    *I hope Apple comes up with a real solution soon, this seems like too much of a hack - considering the delicate nature of colour management.*
    *If you read this and know what I'm talking about and disagree or know any reasons why one would not want to do this - please speak up! I'm sure I'm not the only one who would like to know.*

  • No ICC printer profiles available

    I am using Lightroom 2.4 and tried to select a printer / media profile, but there are none of my profiles availabe.
    Just if I click the "Include Display Profiles" I can see the display profiles, but no more.
    Does any one know how to get the printerprofiles in here, is there a bug?

    In Both Win XP and Vista 32 adding ICC printer profiles work fine.
    In Print-Module -> Print Job Color Management -> Profile : Other you can check the Profiles which should be shown inside LR

  • Im looking for a good display profile

    Hi. Im wondering if anyone has a really nice display profile (.icc) for the Macbook Pro 13 (circa early 2011) with the 9CC5 screen (by LG). Its not like the default is a bad profile, but ive seen my dads macbook pro 13 with the Samsung screen (mines LG) and his just seems to look a little better somehow. Any comments or tips are welcome. Thank you.

    If you don't want to buy a screen colorimeter (and I wouldn't blame you - mine was $250) to calibrate your screen, just create your own, personal profile. Just go to System Preferences>Display>Color tab and select "Calibrate" - you can then calibrate your monitor to your personal preferences. It might not look exactly like your Dad's but that's the best way to get it 'close'.

  • How do you use an outside Lab ICC Printer Profile in PSE 12?

    I have an image that I scanned in from an old print then I edited it using PSE-12. Now that I've completed the editing and retouching I plan to have the image printed by an outside that has the ability to read ICC Printer Profiles designed for their printers embedded in the image. My proble is I don't know how to add a particular ICC Printer Profile to a image worked on in PSE-12. If I was using Lightroom or PS-CS5 or 6 there is a straight forward way to accomplish this goal.
    Is there any way to accomplish the same objective when using PSE-12?

    Thanks MichelBParis.  I must be getting old (I'm 78) and I completely missed that when I was in Dry Creek Photo. In fact that is where I get all of my ICC Printer Profiles from when I'm using either Lightroom or Photoshop CS. What I'm doing is tutoring a friend on the use of PSE-12 (although I do own a copy for my own use) and I was trying to set him up to use ICC Printer Profiles and avoid letting the labs do "Automatic Color Adjust). I had many images ruined in the past just because the lab did an automatic color adjust until an operator schooled me on what was happening. I'm now a part time photographer and I never send an image to be printed without first making sure I have an applicable ICC Printer Profile embedded. and request the lab to turn off their automatic color adjustment.

  • Display Profile No Longer recognized in Final Cut Pro After Mavericks Upgrade

    I have a 27" 3.4 GHz I7 imac. and an Apple 30" Cinema Display  After the Mavericks upgrade my viewer window suddenly has completely crushed blacks and is extremely dark.  Projects previously exported out look perfect in both Quicktime and Preview. I can export a project and it looks fine, just terrible in FCP.  It seems that it is related to my calibrated display profiles.  FCP will not recognize them now under Mavericks and worked fine with Lion.  Switching to the generic imac or cinema display profile will hold after the change and make the viewer look normal.  I downloaded FCP 10.1 didn't fix it.  Any ideas why this is happening now?

    After researching this quite a bit and seeing this Very very dark video in FCP X viewer. I was able to fix the problem by building a matrix based profile. This problem dated back to the first FCP release for some, but I never experienced it until updating to Mavericks.  It seems that Mavericks is the problem, since nothing changed with FCP. I read somewhere else that another color calibration software tool was having an issue that Maverick's broke LUT (Look Up Table's}  I'm surprised that I am not seeing more photographer's/videographers with this issue. It may just be that those that are using calibration don't have softaware that builds LUT profiles by default.

  • How to make custom icc color profile work as default for all users?

    Hi!
    I've calibrated two monitors for the machine running Mavericks OS X. I've managed to move these custom icc color profiles to ColorSync folder in HDD Library, so that that they are available for all the users. However, I cannot figure out how to make these icc profiles work as default profiles for all users and not only the one I used to calibrate monitors.
    Is there a specific place I have to put custom icc profile to make it system default?

    If you put the profiles in the root /Library/ColorSync/Profiles/ folder, then each user needs to select them in their account. There isn't a way to apply them globally so each account automatically comes up that way.

  • Memory Leak in Preview.app when switching Display Profiles

    I found a weird memory leak in Max OS X Preview.app, which manifests itself when Display profiles (color calbration) is change. I wonder if anyone else can reproduce my experience.
    1. Open up "System Preferences" -> "Displays", switch to the "Color" tab. You'll need at least 2 available profiles in the list. (If you only have 1, you can create another using "Calibrate..." button to launch Display Calibration Assistant.
    2. Open an image file in Preview.app.  The larger, the better. Zoom in full size to maximize the effect of the bug. I repro'ed easily with this image: http://www.donporter.net/NewSchool/Color/Examples/Printer%20Test%20file.jpg
    3. Open up "Activity Monitor.app", and click on Preview to highlight it, so you can watch its memory usage.
    4. Switch back to "Diplays" Preference Pane. Using the arrow keys, toggle up and down between two different Display profiles.
    4a. At the same time, watch Preview's "Real Mem" in Activity Monitor, as well as the total "Active" memory.
    5. Each time you switch profiles,  Preview consumes more Active/Real memory, about 25MB per switch in my case. This continues until all physical memory is consumed, and then (I presume) starts swapping virtual memory to disk.
    6. Bring Preview to  foreground, and all the profile-induced memory usage is freed.
    Weird, wild stuff.

    Could it be possible that this is just the OS holding the memory for the app until another process requires it?  Do you find that the memory increase eventually causes the app to become unstable? 
    It might be best to open a new bug report on this over at bugbase.adobe.com.  When adding the bug, please include any source code, project or installer that will help us reproduce the issue internally.  If you'd like to keep your code private, feel free to email it directly to [email protected]  Once entered, please post back with the URL so that others effected can add their comments and votes.

  • How to get the POSIX path of a display profile under 10.6?

    Hi forum,
    I'm currently struggling with an AppleScript that returns the POSIX path of the profile of the 1st display just fine when run under OS X 10.4.11. But under 10.6, I can't seem to get it to work, it raises 'syntax error: Expected “,” but found identifier'.

    (I should probably mention that I try to run the actual script from the commandline using osascript - ie. `osascript -e 'tell app "ColorSyncScripting"' -e 'set prof to location of (display profile of display 1)' -e 'try' -e 'POSIX path of prof' -e 'end try' -e 'end tell'`)
    Any suggestions are appreciated.

    The ColorSync scripting extension relied on FSSpecs and was not 64-bit compatible. Apple dropped it entirely, along with huge chunks of the ColorSync API for which there are currently no publicly documented replacements. You'll have to do it in C.

  • How do you add a icc colour profile to a mac

    I need to add the icc colour profile of the printers that print my photographs onto my computer so when i do the little post production I know what im getting from them. Any ideas how this can be done.

    There are two library folders where you could install them:
    To install for all users install in
    Macintosh HD > Library >ColorSync>Profiles
    To install only for yourself install in
    Your Home Folder > Library >ColorSync>Profiles

  • Determine ICC output profile (name) in PDF/X output intent

    Hi all,
    I have a PDF of which I need to determine the ICC output profile (name) of the PDF/X output intent. This is what I have in the 'content stream':

    How can I, based on this information, determine what the name of the ICC profile in the PDF/X output intent is? Adobe Acrobat's output preview tells me that is should say / find ''ISO Coated v2 300% (ECI)'.

    Thanks! Thought it would be something in that direction. Any tools or libraries you might know that can be used to extract and parse this kind of information (as part of a preflight process or something else)? Adobe tools for instance?
