IChat AV connection

Hey, I've searched around for an answer to my problem but can't seem to find one. I'm been using iChat for awhile and in the past days iChat has been able to open, but not connect. I use an Airport card and other programs that use the internet still work, but when I attempt to log in to iChat I get the following message.
The connection could not be completed because it timed out. Try again.
After getting that message a few times I downloaded the latest iChat but that has not done anything. Any ideas will help. Thanks.
Also, I am unable to connect to certain web pages due to connection failures. It seems to be the same web sites over and over, but previously (before this problem) I had been able to connect to these sites.

Hi Bristol,
Had you previously set up any Port Forwarding in the modem for iChat ?
Has your IP changed since then (from the modem to the rest of your LAN) ?
If so the IP for the Port Forwarding may need to be redone.

  • IChat Lost Connection

My iChat will connect and seem to be normal for a few minutes, but then it disconnects without my knowledge. I just stop getting messages or it will show a buddy speaking, and I just sit waiting for them to say something. People think I keep leaving chats, when really I have no idea I have gone away. Sometimes it will come up with a "lost connection" message.
I have tried changing my port from 5190, and have used the Interference Robustness setting. Neither worked.
I am also using Wireless if that helps, but my roommate using the same wireless connection seems to have no problem.
Please help! This is driving me crazy.

Try changing the channel on the router.

  • Ichat wont connect to anyone

I can't get ichat to connect to anyone either using audio or video - i get the message about no response etc.. i have checked the recipients mac and it works fine so problem is on my end - though in checking recipient can call out using the same router as me on her macbook.
I've tried logging in as someone else, and also changing to port 443 but all to no avail - any thoughts?

    Ok,
IF the router is 192.168.1.1 are both computers showing 192.168.1.x numbers themselves and listing the "Router IP" as the 92.168.1.1 IP ?
Are the DNS servers listed on the router showing on both Macs ?
Is there any other router involved between the tower and the Internet ?
    Are you using Parallels ?
IS Internet Sharing On in System Preferences > Sharing as this is an issue in Leopard ?

  • IChat not connecting to AIM account

I can seldomly ever connect to AIM on my iChat app.
Im using te standard AIM 4.7 from AOL.com, but iChat cant connect.

    Hi
Apart from Rj's advice.... Do you use the same AIM screen on both apps ?
Have you set the Multiple Logins option in iChat > Preferences > Accounts section
Select the AIM account in question and then the Account info tab. This has a check box at the top of the pane to Enable Mulitple Logins.
You have to be logged out of AIM first (all apps)

  • IChat loses connection upon startup.

iChat loses connection every time I start it up. It'll connect after a few seconds, but it always throws me off. It also crashes the wireless router itself, and whatever is using the internet is booted off. I'm thinking it could be strictly wireless router related, but I'm wondering if it could possibly be the iChat application. I know not all wi-fi routers are compatible with MacBooks completely (or so I've read), but is it normal for only ONE application to mess up? I can connect with Skype, MSN, or any other programs that require the internet on first try.. just not iChat.

    Hi,
I know of some routers or DLS Modem (they also tend to route) that I would not want if I wanted to continue to iChat.
It is not so much that they are incompatible with the Mac but incompatible with th way iChat works..
This means you can access the set up pages with a Mac but the bits you cannot not change from those pages are sometimes "features" that do not help iChat. (mostly to do with how they handle SIP data)
Even if you had such a device iChat is unlikely to make it Crash/Lose Internet/Reboot in the way you describe.
So the device you have is capable of Wifi but you are Ethernet to it ?
Are you also doing a Wifi Connection to it ?
If you are this can cause iChat problems in Video/Audio chats.
Again it is not likely to to cause the issue you describe.
I have a Sagem Fast2405 Modem that is also a Wifi able router.
I have reduced the DHCP range to just 3 IPs for WiFi able phones.
I have two Macs one of which is WiFi but can be Ethernetted, 2 PC towers that are hard wired (Ethernet), a PC Laptop, 1 X-Box 360's that are all Set with Static IPs (there was another 360 at one stage and another Tower and Window Laptop but my daughter moved out).
I mention this to highlight the need to check the IPs of each computer and possibly the methods it has of connecting.
A Ethernet Card in your computer and the Wifi card have what are called Media Access Card (MAC) addresses (numbers).
for each MAC address the modem or router will assign a Different IP. So a computer set to "Using DHCP" in System Preferences > Network will get two IPs if connected by Wifi and Ethernet.
However it if you assign the IPS Manually (Apple's Name for Static routing that needs DHCP turned Off in the router) then it is possible to allocate the Same IP to either different connection methods or to different computers/Game Stations.
This last may cause the symptoms you describe in some routers.
It will tend to show up in those Apps that are very specific about the "path" to the internet such as iChat (Skype is less fussy as it has "Fall back" ports that rely on Web Browsing and Mail ports).
I doubt it is a faulty unit but it still remains a possibility.
    I hope this helps.

  • IChat lost connection to AIM!?!?!?!

Everytime I try to go on to iChat this message pops up "iChat lost connection to AIM. The connection to the host was unexpectedly lost." Any help?!?!

Help! I've got the same problem and I've tried - port 443, 1080, 5091 and neither works. I can ping the aol server, use msn, but I cannot connect to AIM with ichat or with the standalone version AIM 4.7 for the mac. The web version doesn't seem to work either. I started a new account and i got the same error message at login - could not connect to aim - the connection tot he host was unexpedtedly lost. I am at a school, but the network guys have said that the application isn't being blocked and the ports should be open. I have a wireless macbook with os x tiger and a wired imac intel with os x tiger and neither work. any suggestions?

  • Ichat wont connect at all

    Hi everyone!
I'm a new macbook user, and i'm really happy, but I still need to learn a lot... hope you can help me.
when I try to open my ichat, inmediatly it disconnects and says "the connection has been lost unexpectedly" (well, or something like that, I have it in spanish, and i don't know how it appears in english)
does anybody know if there is something I can do?
    thanks!

    Hi
frist try logging on to AIM on port 443 rather than port 5190
Go to IChat in the menu bar > Preferences > Accounts.
Log out of AIM and then use the Server Settings tab
    Set the port to 443.
    Log back in again.

  • IChat video connection issue, not related to router

I received a brand new 20" iMac Core 2 Duo just yesterday and intended to use iChat AV to video conference with my girlfriend, who has a 12" iBook G4 1.2GHz with an iSight and all system software up-to-date.
We both have DSL connections at home. We also both have wireless routers. The very first time we tried a video conference, it worked perfectly without a hiccup and everything just looked and sounded wonderful. At the time, she was connected wirelessly and I was connected both wirelessly and through Ethernet to my router's local network.
The second time we tried it (only a few hours later), seemingly without having changed any settings, it failed to work, and hasn't worked since. At first, we would get Error -22, saying something about how bandwidth is insufficient to maintain a video conference. However, I do not believe bandwidth is the real issue since all other network/internet tasks on both ends are spiffy as usual. We also both tried turning off Airport and just connecting through Ethernet to our routers' local network. Same problem.
To then determine if the problem was with one our routers, we both set them aside and plugged our DSL modems directly into our computers and connected to the internet with PPPoE. This appears to partially fix the problem: we are able to initiate a video conference, we both have audio, I can see her, but she can't see me; sort of a one-sided conference. On my screen, the image of myself freezes as soon as the conference is initiated. So unless I'm missing something, the ultimate cause of this problem doesn't appear to be the routers.
You can bet I tried a bunch of the common tips mentioned in this discussion forum before posting this question, such as changing the iChat port in the preferences, turning off Firewalls in the Sharing preferences and changing Quicktime streaming speed.
In summary, it worked once and hasn't worked since, and routers do not appear to be the cause of the issue. Does anyone have any further advice for me? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.
    iMac 20" Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

First off I want to thank James for his willingness to help me test connections today. James has suggested I check into upping my Mother's connection. I will definitely look into that.
I wanted to update the thread that I tried the three test accounts at Apple (appleu3test01-3) and had success from all three on my home computer via my wireless configuration no less. This is what stumps me about my connection issues with my Mother - we can both connect to others but between us we get error -8's since iChat 3. I also find it odd that this is happening even though we are both Earthlink customers - I would chalk it up to routing tables or something if we were on different ISP's.

  • IChat not connecting properly or reliably to AIM

    hi there folks
i've read with interest the various problems other people are having with this and the suggestions that have been offered. so far, nothing has improved my situation. here are some relevant details:
    - iChat will not reliably logon to AIM, though when this happens Bonjour works fine. when I try to log on, i often just see my buddy list grey-ed out - eventually my online buddies will show up at the top (as they should) but then quite often the next listed symptom will occur.
    - if/when iChat has logged in successfully, it will often crash silently in the background. the symptom here is that any outgoing messages do not appear in the iChat window and subsequent messages are ignored by iChat, but when the application is logged off i get the return messages, meaning that my first message IS getting through though iChat is not showing that it did, and I do not see the responses until i log off.
    - the only thing that seems to have worked to mitigate all this is waiting some period of time (not predictable - could be 5 minutes, could be an hour) before trying to log back on again. occasionally rebooting the mac will work, but this may be related to the time factor.
    - this scenario happens on multiple computers in multiple locations (even in other countries), using different routers. my desktop at home is a mac mini PPC running X.4.10 connected via ethernet to a linksys router. my desktop here at work is the G5 listed below, connected via ethernet to an Airport Extreme base station. my laptop is a macBook core2duo 2.0 mhz, running X.4.10 and connecting wirelessly, and exhibits these symptoms at both locations with both routers.
all computers were updated to their current OS status using combo updaters.
if I run AIM 4.7 on the work desktop, it connects with no problem, so it doesn't seem to be an account-related issue with AIM. the fact that the identical problems exist across different machines running different OS versions and with different routers in different locations leaves me scratching my head.......
any insights into how to solve this would be most appreciated. any additional information needed will be gladly provided.
    best regards,
    hiltonius

ok, just in the interest of completeness.....
i believe i have solved the problem today, and thought i'd share my experience in case someone else can benefit from it.
in pursuit of another way of using iChat, I was introduced to "jabber" and started configuring new accounts on my home desktop and my laptop to access AIM, Yahoo, and MSN all through jabber. got all that working fine.
in the process of creating new accounts in iChat, the prefs file gets re-written - and I believe this cured the previous problem I was trying to address in the first place! at least so far today, the connection has not wavered, and so i'm optimistic that it'll continue to work.
the tricky thing is that I sync these computers together using mark/space "sync together" software, so I believe it's likely that this problem originated on the studio DAW, was transferred through a sync I did there a while back, and manifested itself on all the computers when I upgraded to X.4.10. as I almost never run iChat on the DAW at work, I would not have noticed the bug there before it transferred to the computers on which I do run iChat - and then at that point, i checked it on the studio DAW and noticed it there too.
so if there's a moral - when the feces flies off the proverbial fan, sometimes it's a good idea to just create a new iChat account and then even delete it if you want, just to re-write the prefs and keep everything smooth.
any alternate theories, realities, or visions of peace are most welcome.
    best regards,
    Rich

    Hi bduszz124,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions

    Video Conference Error Report:
    Video Conference Support Report:
    Video Conference User Report:
    Binary Images Description for "iChat":
Indicates that the port 5060 is not open.
Where it is not open is itself an open question.
It could be All the ichat ports if the Firewall on the Mac is ON but the ports are not set.
iChat send a visual invite on port 5678 which you Buddy Clicks on.
The Process then moves to port 5060 where iChat contacts a Server Called SNATMAP run by Apple that does the SIP link part.
Your iChat contacts this server and tells it what ports you want ichat to use.
The Server finds the Buddy over SIP and tells them which ports and Bingo you are connected.
Now if Your iChat can see the SIP server then you get more details than you have.
As you don't have this detail it can mean the modem or router does not have the ports open.
It can also mean that you have a piece of VoIP equipment like a Vonage adapter that is stripping all the SIP data
It can also mean your ISP offers a VoIP service and wants to charge more for port 5060 to be open.
(VoIP uses SIP as well - Apple have said iChat is a VoIP app)
Most ISP seem to be persuadable that they should unblock port 5060 free of charge as it is effecting your app or that they have changed the conditions of the service without telling you.
Knowing more about your LAN, Make and model of all devices in the link and how they are set up for DHCP and ports would be helpful.

  • IChat not connecting

I've been using iChat to videoconference with my parents in France for 6 years now.
iChat has usually run smoothly (except for occasional problems with the Internet provider), but for the past couple of weeks, when I call, the line says "Starting videochat" but it stops there. I checked in Activity monitor and the # of KB sent and received does not take off.
When my parents are the ones calling, then it connects (it take longer than usual though) and we actually have a pretty good connection (no less than 120 KB for both). It's also interesting that if I request a Screen Share while we are communicating, then this goes through without any problems.
We are both using AIM and are using the same OS 10.6.8 (they use an iMac, I use a MacBook Pro). iChat is 5.0.3 (745). The server settings are login.oscar.aol.com on port 5190. I tried to change to 443 but it automatically switches back to 5190. And we are "Allowing AOL's server to relay video chats".
What I can't understand is why it stopped working all of the sudden for me and why it works when my parents call. File transfer is OK too.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    HI,
It does seem a bit strange that people all over the place are reporting that they suddenly can't do what they were doing.
You have to Log Out of the AIM server (iChat > Preferences > Accounts > Account Info tab > Untick the "Enable this account" box)
Then go to Server Settings and change the Port.
If that does not work change the AIM relay item to Off if is currently On.

  • IChat rarely connects!

iChat use to work perfectly but now for about 3 weeks nearly everytime I open ichat it only displays connecting for about a minuete and then says connection timed out. It must be an application error because my other apple imac works perfectly to connect.
I was wondering how I can A) fix the problem if anyone is familiar with it or B) reinstall ichat?
    Thank you,
    TM

  • IChat loses connection incessantly

IChat can't seem to maintain a connection to AIM.
AOL instant messager maintains its connection just fine, however.
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
In that case it is unlikely to be any port setting on the Modem as the AIM application uses the same log in port that iChat does (5190).
This would then seem to suggest that there may be something wrong with the log in preferences.
Try deleting com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist This and the other ichat.plists are found in Users/(your account/Library/Preferences
    Restart iChat afterwards.

  • IChat wont connect during webcam

When i try and connect to the webcam with another buddy. It always says communication error. how can i ichat??

    Hi,
Go to your Home folder (little House icon)
Open the Library and then Logs and iChatConnectionErrors
Open the last one (by date) and post the info in it down to the Line that "Says Binary Images for iChat"
iChat records the Errors in full in this format and the Errors have numbers at the end of the first real paragraph.
It really depends on what that number is as to the "Fix".

  • Ichat loses connection when idle

whenever my computer idles, my connection w/ ichat is lost! what can i do to stop this from happening? I don't have the connectivity problem any other time...

    No problem:
By the way, welcome to Apple Discussion.
Unfortunately, whenever your mac goes to sleep, iChat will disconnect.
The only way to resolve the issue is to not have your computer not go to sleep. You can however, just have your screen go to sleep (System Preferences>Energy Saver>Put the computer to sleep when it is inactive for>Never and Put the display to sleep when the computer is inactive for>Whatever setting you prefer.
    I hope this helps!
