IChat - iMac to iMac - but .mac to AIM account

I am having trouble iChatting with a friend who has a brand new iMac (with built in iSight) and who is using an AIM account. I have an iMac and a .mac account and have been iChatting for many years without troubles.
She appears in my buddy list with a video icon but when we attempt to start an ichat, it says "starting iChat..." but then an error message comes up that says "...failed to accept iChat" despite her accepting the invitation.
Does my friend have to have a .mac account to make iChat AV work?
Any other suggestions?
Thanks

HI Buck,
Your download speed should be what you are paying for. Most ISP sell their service based on download speed. However you can test it.
Here http://www.auditmypc.com/internet-speed-test.asp
In iChat there is also a setting that will cap theBandwidth it uses.
Go to iChat > Preferences > Video section > Bandwidth drop down and set to NONE.
The range orf ports are not enough.
The Apple Doc 93208 was wrttien for Panther and has two badly done updates, which
1) do not point out that the Mac Firewall contains UDP and TCP settings now.
2) That you might need ports 16384-16403 (well it does but not well)
3) It wrongly lists those same ports in Note 1. as being TCP when they are in fact UDP
4) It misses making it clear there are two other ports sometimes needed 5353 for the Bonjour side and 5223 for some Jabber logins (Google talk and others)

  • IChat AV 3.1.6 (Mac) with AIM 5.9 (PC) AV Chat external router port setting

    Hello,
I'm using iChat 3.1.6 on my Mac and want to videoconference (with audio) to PC users having installed AIM 5.9.
We can't get a videocon started probably due to firewall settings. I opened up my Mac firewalll ports, yet the external router has to be handled as well, as far as I've understood.
My external router is a FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN 7050 (UI), Firmware-Version 14.04.15. Does anybody know the exact procedure to open the necessary ports on this device? The user interface is somewhat clumsy, and I'm not the most experienced user. Your detailed instructions are much appreciated (c:

    Dave, Ralph,
thanks to both of you for your helpful answers - I have tried port forwarding on my AVM Fritz!Box, and opening the indicated ports for TCP and for UDP works - except for port 5060 (UDP), where I get an error message "FEHLER: Eintrag kollidiert mit interner Regel." - the router won't accept the port number entry since it violates an internal rule.
I have tried to get support both from my ISP (1&1) and from AVM, the Fritz!Box manufacturer 3 days ago. AVM hasn't answered yet, I just got a ticket number from them so it seems they are working on it. 1&1, my ISP, claim they don't block any ports with their VoIP service, especially not port 5060.
Admittedly, being only one step away from a working solution, I'm somewhat clueless now.
Any more suggestions? It seems to be a specific AVM Fritz!Box problem (unless 1&1 admit otherwise)?
    Thanx
    Wolfgang

  • IChat video quality better with .Mac subscriber than with AIM?

The quality of my video chats with one brother who also has a .Mac account is noticeably better than my chats with another brother, who uses iChat with an AIM account. I'm in the US, they are both in UK. All of us have almost identical iMacs. The one with the AIM account supposedly has a faster Internet connection. My question: is the video quality of iChat better if both users have .Mac accounts than if one has an AIM account?

The Screen names make no difference.
It is about a combination of Proccessor, Video card in iChat 4, internet Connection and settings and the amount of Bandwidth you get out of that connection.
As Defcom (UK) has said start with those basic Settings.
In iChat 3 and 2 the Quicktime setting when on Automatic is read as a 0 (zero) and this effectively Caps iChat.
In iChat 4 the Automatic setting is seen as 384k which is the MINIMUM for a 4 way chat.
As far as an Internet Connection goes this should be at Least 100k in both Up and Downloads.
Due to some data stream management to cut down on Peer-to-Peer file Sharing it pays to limit iChat in the Video Section Bandwidth Limit section to slip under the Radar as it were. There are two main ISP doing this Comcast and Road Runner in the States.
Verizon offer a FioS fibre service that is not that stable in speeds and jumps all over the place which is then too fast for iChat to keep up and that should use the cap in iChat Preferences as well.

  • IChat not logging into .Mac or AIM

    Hello:
I have been working with and using iChat with no issues forever. I upgraded to 10.5.1 on the day it was released, and had no issues.
Suddenly, yesterday, iChat won't login to my .Mac or AIM account. It logs into Jabber and Rendezvous without issue... but .Mac and AIM sits at "Connecting" in the status bar... and NEVER times out... and never fails.
The only errors I see in the system log are:
    WARNING: AIMBuddyList::GetBlockingMode failed, result=80000008
WARNING: Unable to save buddy list to server, internal error: -2147220989
    There is nothing else.
To my knowledge I haven't upgraded or changed anything. I even tried a different physical local network (brought my laptop to work this morning) and attempted to login wired and wireless.
    I'm at a loss... HEEEEEEELP!!!!
    - matthewk

    Found the answer.
PGP Desktop was blocking the connection (I imagine because it was attempting to encrypt the IM session).
What's really strange is, I haven't changed my PGP config in a few weeks... and this issue just started manifesting yesterday.
Anyhow... Hope this help the next sucker (sic.) PGP user.

  • HT2515 Must i have an AIM account to access ichat?

Here's the thing.. I have a valid me.com id. and everytime i try to use iChat, it keeps asking me for an AIM account password.. So i tried to sign up but the problem is that it doesnt recognize my zip code.. Any help?

    Hi,
An Apple ID ending in @mac.com and @me.com are also valid AIM Screen Names.
In iChat 6 you go to the iChat Menu > Preferences > Accounts
IN here should be a list with at least Bonjour in it ( and anything you set up in System Preferences > Mail, Contacts and Calendars)
As it is iChat 6 it will accept an iCloud Issued @me.com name.  (these are not accepted by earlier versions - iChat 6 logs in to AIM and to me.com  the extra me.com login allows AIM to "read" the password and earlier version don't do this)
The Password has to be 16 characters or less as this is the Limit at the AIM servers  so you may have to shorten your password.
You can do this via the iForgot portal.
If you wanted an AIM name as well then I believe this Portal/page does not require a Zip code.
To add new Accounts/Screen Name in iChat use the + button at the bottom of that list.
In the new pane you change the top item (its becomes a  Drop down) tio the Account type you want to Add.
(In Messages Beta all names that login to the AIM Server are added under "AIM" And I can't remember what iChat 6 had)
Only add the password if you are confident no-one has access to your computer  (it will ask you each time you login if it is not there)
If it is there iChat will call on it from the Keychain where it is stored.

  • Aim account wont login on ichat

i have switched to leopard over the weekend. Since doing so, i have been unable to get my aim account to login. I receive the message connection reset by peer. I have no idea what to do, because i can get connected w/ adium to my msn account but not the aim account.. so it has to be relevant to the aim only

ok, i have tried creating a new aol account i still have the same results as the old one. i have updated the keychain and deleted the aim from it... still no results... i even went as far as to download the aim messenger thinking maybe it was a problem w/ ichat or Adium.. and i still could not connect... every other internet function works fine from safari, to my other instant messaging, i am a college student and nearly all of my friends use this im solely.

  • AIM account on Messages keep going offline

    Hello,
I recently installed Mountain Lion on my iMac (iMac10,1) and added my AIM account to Messages.
When I am using Messages, my AIM account frequently goes offline by itself (and sometimes reconnects again).
I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else and if there is a fix.
    Thank you,

Ive had this problem as well. I have four accounts two of which are yahoo accounts, 1 gmail, and 1 icloud. I have found that when you go to system preferences and then mail,contacts... and you click on details and retype your password it usually works. If that doesn't work though go to your email providers page and log in there and make sure your proxy settings are correct. Step two solved my issue. Hope this works for ya!

  • How do I get messages to go back to an AIM account? It's only seeing the iPad's Facetime email address and not seeing the old AIM account name that is on my desktop. I am using my iMac using iChat to talk to a newer iMac that doesn't have iChat.

How do I get messages to go back to an AIM account? It's only seeing the iPad's Facetime email address and not seeing the old AIM account name that is on my desktop. I am using my iMac using iChat to talk to a newer iMac that doesn't have iChat. We had this working using Messages and Facetime (on the new machine) talking to my existing iChat account. One day last week, when Facetime rang, my kids answered on the iPad. Dang! Now it's all fouled up! The new iMac won't see my AIM account name and shows that I'm offline, because the iPad is off. We were able to call using "most recent call" in Facetime, but now I can't go and control that new iMac remotely to help with some email concerns the user is having. I'm trying to not personalize this too much, but it's grandkids talking to Grandma and Mom and Dad trying to solve new machine hiccups. Normally, I could just go in via iChat and control the other machine and troubleshoot, but I can't do it with Facetime only. My buddy list doesn't see  the other computer even though we are connected on Facetime right now. My name is not highlighted for the other computer. What could have gone so wrong?
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • IChat MBP to iMac - 1 .mac account

How can I have my MBP iChat (video) w/my iMac using only 1 .mac account?

Try logging into both computers. If it logs you out of one while logging into the other then you can't. Just get another .Mac account and/or AIM account.
If you still think there is a way then you also might want to try the right discussion board. If there is a way it would be in the iChat settings and it has nothing to do with MBP.So...yeah. Wrong discussion board.

Your Mac is definitely one of the supported models? http://www.apple.com/uk/osx/specs/
If so, what happens when you try to download? Is it a case of nothing happens? If so, take a look at the suggestions under 'Stalled Download' in this link:
    http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2013/10/mavericks-issues-and-fixes/#slideid-23477 1
Also, some usrs have found that logging out of the Mac App Store and then back in again and starting over has kick-started the download. It seems that the 5+gb download can take a long time to give any feedback as to what's happening.

i tried to get the installation disc for the camcorder but mac wont' recognize it becaue it is windows based i guess.
i just bought the camcorder a few months ago and when my computer crashed thought i'm finally getting a mac...it's been a costly venture which has resulted in more frustration than before my pc.
now the things i want to use with my mac that i thought would be even simpler...are not even useable...
    help

That camera shoots H.264 in an .avi wrapper.
You will have to transfer the files via the Finder.
Get a free copy of MPEG Streamclip and convert them to QuickTime .mov using the H.264 codec if you are presumably editing in iMovie.
Note that your list of video codecs won't look like mine as I have Final Cut Pro, but H.264 is definitely an option for you.

  • HT1338 Hi,I have an iMac OS X, but I need to get the update to Mac OS X 10.4.7 in order to get Keynote , but I can't, how can I do it?

    Hi,
I have an iMac OS X, but I need to get Keynote for a Powerpoint presentation, so when trying to download tells me to get Mac OS X 10.4.7, and if I try gettin Software update, I get none available, how can I do it?

You need to either buy and install Mac OS X 10.8 from the Mac App Store, or purchase an iWork 09 DVD, or use a product such as OpenOffice instead of Keynote.

One possibility is that you may need to "Upgrade" your Cable /DSL Modem if you have an older unit.  ISP's that provide your Internet service in recent years have been switching over from DOCSIS 2.1 version Modems to DOCSIS 3.0 version Modems, which handle the new higher data streaming speeds the ISP's are offering.  I would suggest you call your ISP's Technical Support and inquire about this possibility.
