IChat to AIM XP - my experiences so far

My experiences with iChat to AIM 5.9 on a PC running XP
I have a G4 Cube (10.4.2) in Germany and my Mum and Dad are in New Zealand running a PC with XP. We both took our firewalls completely down (have not tried just opening the selected ports yet). We get a connection with sight and sound when he initiates the call, but if I try to initiate then I get the " I failed to respond signal" message.
I felt the video and sound was better than iVisit, which we also tried. But after a few minutes of video chatting, the audio I was hearing deteriorated and then eventually the image froze. My Dad at 70 is no computer genius (he should get a Mac really), but I will pass on the "AIM tuning tips" posted elsewhere in the forum to him to see if we can improve the connection.

HI Peeks,
I suggested to Crista that she should look at the XP Service Pack 2 Firewall settings as I have found it works better if the Firewall is not wide open but pinned down to the AIM exceptions.
This will not be in her relatives modem.
In fact if it is a USB modem they would be advised to Enable the UPnP excetion as well as this is controlled by the computer.
On a Mac the router can treat the new OS as if it was connected to a whole new computer. This can mean checking router settings (some D-Links and Netgears seem to like a reboot), making sure any Port Forwarding settings are still pointing at the IP the computer has.
With this change of the OS some people bump into the SIP aware modem problem.
This is a somewhat transient thing to pin down.
The symptoms can be:
Two small groups of Buddies
a) contact all the time
b) contact some of the time.
This goes hand in hand with a larger group of buddies that can not be connected to. (this is Audio Or Video chats)
Now moving up to Tiger changes things for some people so that they appear to have a large group of No contacts (many because their Buddies lists are not large enough to check the problem)
Check the manufacturers web site or any manual that you have about this.
Further info can be had here Safari users will have to scroll down to the paragraph on SIP and the texts in Boxes below that.
As you are unfortunately aware this can be an extremely frustrating learning curve.
To be at our most helpful it would be useful to know the modem you are using,
The Manner in which you have opened the ports for ichat in it.
Any secondary router you have.
The port opening style there as well.
Any Connection Doctor error messages or the text over the failed chat if nothing else shows up.
Booting in to Panther for testing (if you have it on a spare disk or partition) is useful as the Connection Doctor there tells you more, even if it is a bit cryptic.
AIM updates come faster than iChat ones and any automatic acceptence may be part of the problem. The current version is at AIM 5.9.3861

  • How do I change ichat from AIM to MSN on my macbook

I'm trying to figure out how to switch my ichat from AIM to MSN.

    Hi,
Natively you can use names vaild with AIM (AIM, @Mac.com a MobileMe) and Jabber IDs including Googletalk ones in iChat.
There is a way to get to Text chat to MSN Buddies via a Jabber ID and what are called Transports.
    The Instructions are here

  • My Infinity experience so far......

    Hi all
Well I thought I would post a message with my experience so far after returning to BT for internet service.
I should first mention I have an extremely low opinion of BT because ever since I first started dealing with them back in 2001 I have had nothing but headaches, blunders, missed call outs and generally poor service. I could go into all of those fiascos, but they have been water under the bridge for a few years now.
Anyway, I decided I wanted an FTTC connection and although my provider at the time could supply it, they wanted to charge nearly £100 and would not supply a cable modem/router so I would have to buy my own.
After some consideration I decided to give BT another try after walking away from them back in 2008.
OK, now no offence to anyone in those call centres in India, but I live in the UK, so I want to talk to a British person, or at least someone who is perfectly fluent in English (not reading from a script). I knew this was a slim hope so I decided to go the fool proof way and place my order online.
Order duly placed and on my order tracking page I had a button to click and enter my MAC code when I received it. I didnt get that for another couple of days but when I went back to my order page to enter it - the button to enter the MAC code had gone! My order was apparently all on track. So I called BT and luckily got through to a UK call centre where the customer service representative checked into the problem. The result?
Well, for some reason they had two orders on the system that were conflicting, and causing an erroneous order status to be displayed on my tracking page. He went off for a few minutes, came back and said it had now all been sorted - both orders had been deleted and he had manually entered the order on the system with the MAC code I had just provided.
    Great! All on track now..........
The engineer was booked for Saturday 12th January, 2013. The home hub 3 was due to be dispatched by Tuesday 8th. Anyway, by wednesday 9th, there was no oder tracking code on my order page, so once again I called BT. This time I got through to India where unfortunately the BT representative was unable to answer my question and the conversation went something like:
Me: Hi I have an order placed for Infinity and the BT home Hub was supposed to be dispatched by now but I do not have any tracking number on my order page. Can you please check to see if it has been dispatched, and if not, when it will be sent?
BT: One moment sir, I will just check the order details now. Yes sir I can see on the system that your order is due to complete on 12th January
Me: Yes I know that, but the problem is the BT home hub has not yet been dispatched and the engineer needs it to install Infinity. Can you please tell me when it will be dispatched?
BT: Yes sir, I can see from the order that your home hub is due to be delivered by Thursday 10th January.
Me: Yes I know it is supposed to be delivered by then, but it is now Wednesday and my order status page on the BT website says it has still not been dispatched - meaning it will not be here tomorrow. Can you please check why it has not been dispatched?
BT: One moment please sir I will just put you on hold and check the system (on hold for about 30 seconds).....Hello sir, sorry for putting you on hold, I have checked the system and I can confirm that your Home hub is due to be delivered on the 10th January, and the engineer is booked for Saturday 12th January. Your unlimited evening and weekend phone plan will be activated by midnight on 14th January. Is there anything else I can help you with sir?
Me: (silently banging my head up a brick wall) - No, no thank you, that will be all. 'Click'.
So I leave it an hour and call back - purposely to a different BT department where I got someone from the UK (presumably) and I explained that I have a problem and I would like to talk to someone in the UK please - NOT in India. So I was placed on hold for a minute and transfered to a representative who could help. Fortunately it was someone who was perfectly fluent in English (although did have an odd accent - so it may not have been their primary language). This person checked the order and came back to say:
BT: Hi sir, sorry for placing you on hold for so long, I have checked the system and it appears you have three orders in place and they are conflicting with each other. The reason the home hub has not been dispatched yet is because the order is saying you have not yet provided a MAC code.
Me: Uhhhhhm, I provided the MAC code over the telephone over a week ago......
BT: Oh.....Sorry sir I just need to pop you on hold while I look into this.
    (A few mins later)
BT: Hi again sir, sorry for placing you on hold for so long - I have had a colleague check the system and it appears that one order is cancelled, the other is live with a MAC code, but is not present on your order status, and the final order is live on your order page but showing as no MAC code present - hence why the Hub has not been dispatched yet.
To cut a long telephone conversation between myself and several people BT short - their system dropped the ball big time, and a kind gentleman in India (who could speak fluent English) put everything right. Kind of.
I was verbally promised by him that he would expidite my order through the system, and that the engineer would still call on 12th Jan, even though that slot was now no longer available. But he said he would call me back in the morning to finalise all the details. By 3pm the following day I had not recieved that call.
    So I called BT back.
Again I explained to the first person to pick the phone up that I wanted to deal with someone fluent in English. Thankfully the person who answered after a brief period on hold appeared to be British. I went through the problems again and it turned out BT could not honour my original appointment of the 12th, and the kind gentleman in India had placed a note on the system to say as much - to which my first question was "OK, thats fine but why has nobody been in touch as promised?". I got a general response of "I can't answer that sir". So I spent half an hour on the phone with a very nice person from BT who finalised all of the details and managed to expedite my new appointment to 16th January, which I was really pleased with after reading horror stories of people having to wait 2-3 weeks or even a month!
Also, a credit to BT was that they arranged to waiver my first months charges for my troubles. Added to that, on my original order I had ordered a telephone as well, which was offered at £10 less than the BT shop were selling it. I explained this, and they credited my account £10 because it was not showing on their system as available, but the BT shop was showing stock - but at £10 more.
So on Monday 14th Jan, my new Home Hub was delivered as promised in email and SMS messages. Great - almost there!!
So - the day of reckoning - Wednesday 16th January 2013...........
I was up early and ready to answer the door by 07:30 - just in case the engineer was early (my slot was 8am-1pm). I had alo booked the afternoon off work as the email said I needed to make sure I was available for 3-4 hours after my appointment slot ended.
tic, toc, tic, toc the morning wore on. I sat on the 2 seater looking hopefully out of the window. No van. No BT man.
tic toc tic toc. I spent some time on the forums reading horror stories so decided to be pro active and contact a mod - just in case.
Anyway, I got that sinking feeling I have had so many times before when it comes to BT engineers not showing up, and I started to feel disappointed and a little annoyed. I went into the kitchen an started making lunch when there was a knock at the door!
Could it be? Why yes it was! It was a sub-contractor operating on behalf of BT Openreach, but I didn't care, he was here to fit my Infinity! I was grinning from ear to ear. The engineer was competent and swift, and all in all it took around an hour and a half from him knocking the door to me waving bye bye - and that included a 20 min trip to connect the line. Not only that, but as soon as the Hub was connected I was live getting 51mb down and 10mb up - which was exactly as estimated on the speed checker.
So nearly 48hrs later and I am still connected. No drop outs and no drop in speed so far. Fingers crossed it will remain so!
So overall, my experience has been mixed. Shocking service with regard to blunders and problems (yet again) but at the same time I have mostly spoken to people who have helped and got my order back on track. I think it has to be said though, that these problems should not exist and it was only due to my knowledge in dealing BT over the years that I was chasing everything up regulalry which is why the problems came to the attention of BT in the first place. If I had not chased at every turn I would be sitting here with no new connection, and in limbo.
That said, I have to say the telephone service has vastly improved since last time I dealt with BT. I dont think I was on hold waiting to speak to an advisor for any longer than 5-10 mins - and in most cases it was less than 5. But again, due to my past experiences I know how to manipulate the system to speak to the right people and not be transferred to an automated service or to India.
Interestingly, when chatting to the engineer I asked how many he has to do per day. Eight, apparantly. He openly admitted he only normally manages six. Sometimes seven on a good day. I could perhaps say it was because he was slow - but he was very efficient in my house, and I can only assume he continues that efficiency in every property. My conclusion must be that he is simply having unrealistic expectations placed upon him, and two households on the 16th were likely to be disappointed.
My advice - always ask for an AM appointment as there is more chance you will see your engineer.
I would like to know how the appointments are allocated though, and whether it is BT or Openreach that are at fault. Are BT thrusting too many appointments onto Openreach, or are Openreach taking more than they can handle?
So far I am happy with my Infinity, and it does what I wanted it to do. But the crux of the entire process is, why am I so happy? Because I was expecting BT to fail again - which to a large extent they did. I am happy because they did what they were supposed to do. But surely that is a basic element of any customer service? Why should I be overjoyed that they did what they are supposed to? It is kind of like praising a brand new car for starting first time. It is not anything special, it should be expected.
Unfortunately, BT and Openreach have the monopoly, and whilst that is the case we are all at their mercy. Even if you use another provider for FTTC they will send an Openreach engineer. I personally do not think such a monopoly should be allowed, and I think part of the woeful lack of respect for customers is the fact that customers have a woeful lack of options.
My example is just how badly wrong BT can get one simple order. Yes it turned out OK in the end, but only because I was on the ball. I should not have to chase BT to get it right. Why, since I started using them in 2001 have their overall levels of service still not improved? Why am I still having to chase them? Why are they generating three orders and why are there no systems in place to prevent that from happening? Why when they rectify the order they have fouled up, do I suffer from a 3 day delay in installation? OK, its only 3 days - but the fact is it would have been far longer if I had not been on the ball and been expecting BT to fail.
Again it boils down to monopoly - and one which should have been stamped out years ago. Since 2006 BT tried to appease Ofcom by giving the illusion of a fair crack of the whip to other suppliers. But Openreach report directly to the BT CEO. They are an arm of BT and therefore the monopoly remains. Whoever your provider is with, they will be using BT equipment in BT exchanges (unless you are on Cable)
So I suppose the bottom line is that when you don't have any real competition, you can be rubbish and nobody can do a thing about it.
So yes, I got what I wanted in the end, and I am happy with the result - but it is one I have earned myself, and I cannot give BT as a company any praise.
I can, however, praise their staff for bearing the brunt of their companies failings. Keep up the good work guys, and maybe one day you will work for a company that deserves you.
If you are still reading, thanks for bothering!
    Kind Regards

HI. IS THE  BT INFINITY  GOOD.  IS IT  OP1  ARE OP2
    Hi
Yes, the Infinity seems to be very good
I am on Option 2 receiving 50-51MB down and 9-10MB up -which is exactly what BT estimated I would recieve on their website. I can download things off Steam at 6.1 mb/s - which I thought would be higher, but it is still 7 times faster than I was getting before
I also have not had any disconnects or drop in performance.....yet. Of course it is early days but so far the connection is great. I cannot fault it really, but getting to this point was definitely a headache!
    Kind Regards
That's very good speed, but I think you have your MB and mb's the wrong way round, as I am guessing your internet speed is 50-51mb and your download speed is 6.1MB

  • New Customer - All my experiences so far have been...

My experience so far after joining BT from Sky on 12th Aug.
Joined on 12th August - nice lady on the phone tells me she has managed to secure me a Saturday (30/8) appointment for an broadband engineer, other services (phone, tv) will be available on 30/8
I get an email confirming the date the engineer will visit (30/8), and the date the vision box (28/8) will arrive
I get a mysterious empty bag in the post from BT asking me to return fault products, I call up BT on 22/8 to check what the bag is, they say it's a mistake and there is nothing wrong with the order
I take the day off work (28/8) to collect the vision box as it says you need to be there to sign for it
The box doesn't arrive, day off work wasted
I call BT on 28/8 to ask what's up and they say that my whole order has been stopped because the engineer would never go out on a saturday. Not that the order has been attempted to move, or I have had a call from BT to explain the problem, that my WHOLE order (tv, broadband, phone) has been stopped and it is only because I've just called them that I know the state of the order. As such, no services will be available as promised.
I explain that I have no TV, Phone or Broadband and that my wife works from home so this is a major problem. I get told than an expert will call me and take me through the process, however, for some reason this wont be for another four days (1/9) before I am contacted to find another date
I will now have to take another day off for the engineer (my wife doesn't want to be responsible for discussing the installation with the engineer), and my wife will have to buy a 3G dongle (we do not get bt free wifi reception) so that she can still work.
I've only been with BT for 3 weeks now, but I've been let down by silly mistakes, poor service and I'm still waiting in a house without any services.
This isn't the service I expected ... I think moving to BT was a mistake.

  • How do i transfer or export buddy list names on iChat or Aim on mac

How do i transfer or export buddy list names on iChat or Aim on mac?

    Hi,
If you have the AIM for Mac then you cand sign in as one Screen Name and use the Export feature to create a file of the Screen Names of that Buddy list.
(you can then sign in under a different name and import the names)
In iChat it helps if all the Buddies have Real Names or Nicknames so that they have entries in the Address Book.
You can then create Groups in the Address Book and move all the Cards into one Group.
All the names in that Group can then be selected and dragged to another AIM valid Buddy list.
I once transferred 292 names this way.
You can also login to multiple Accounts in some version of ichat and just Drag names form one list to another.
You may find with any of these methods that some Buddies appear only as Off line.
This will due to their Security Setting where they are only allowing your Original Screen Name.

  • Multi-person video conference iChat to AIM 5.9 on PC

Is there a way to have multi person video conference involving a buddy that's using AIM 5.9 on a PC?
If I'm on a video chat with another iChat buddy and try to invite a AIM-on-PC buddy, it simply doesn't work. If I'm on a video chat with the AIM-on-PC buddy, the plus sign is grayed out. I can otherwise easily support a four-way video conference, so long it involves only iChats...

You cannot do multiperson video conferencing involving both iChat and AIM PC users. I think that is what the first responder meant to say.
You can use SightSpeed to do multiperson video conferencing among both Mac and PC users. There are both PC and Mac versions of SightSpeed, and it is necessary that all users be running SightSpeed software and not iChat or AIM for PCs.
Also, the person hosting the SightSpeed multiperson conference must have the $4.95 per month paid version of SightSpeed. If you are interested, you can find more information at:

  • Ichat to aim no audio

o.k. i know that there are all kinds of problems with ichat to aim connections. i finally got a working video connection to my friend who uses aim. he can even hear me. the problem is that i cannot hear him! anybody ever had this problem? it seems new to me...
    - christian

    Hello - christian.
    anybody ever had this problem?
    Many times.
Whenever there is no audio at your end, but the PC user on the other end has a mic and can hear you, the PC user should try "tuning" the preferences for his camera and / or Mic. That usually resolves the problem.
Some PC users report that they need to reboot their PC after tuning to make the changes effective. Some also have reported that they must re-"Tune" whenever they make ANY camera or mic change, even as simple as unplugging and later plugging the same item back into their PC.

  • Ichat to AIM on vista question

I am not able to video chat or audio only chat with my friend, who uses Vista, via AIM. I found a website telling me how to set up the windows firewall on the pc, however it only says for windows xp. I tried it on my old dell laptop running xp and video and audio chat were both successful with macbook running leopard and imac running tiger.
My question is: Will this work for vista? Or just an xp fix?
BTW, the settings said to turn on UPnP and open the scope to any, not jsut subnet. I hope that makes sense. Thanks.

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
Some Forums have Users Tips above the Topic list and iChat has some.
This one http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1968438 is about iChat to AIM on a PC and video chats.
Quick things to try and check.
Have she allowed AIM as an Exception in the Windows Firewall ?
In your ichat Go to the Preferences item in the iChat Menu.
Chose Video/Audio section and change the Bandwidth to 500kbps
If you are using Leopard (10.4.x) and iChat 4.x.x then go to System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab and set the speed to 1.5Mbps (Don't worry that it hints about it being for Cable)
Double check System Preferences > Sound > Output tab.
If you actually have two methods of output make sure the chosen one here is the same as in iChat > Preferences > Video and the extra Output Drop down you will get below your Pic/Camera Preview
ON the PC end the Mic is set up in the Control Panels and the AIM app uses that Level for Audio and Video chats.
She may need to make sure this is high enough. (I am not sure this is adjustable during chats like the System Preferences > Sound > Input on the Mac is for iChat).

  • Issues with both iChat and AIM

Recently I have been having issues with both iChat and AIM. I was hoping someone here could shed some light on what the problem may be.
AIM allows me to log-in and chat with people. However, if I close an IM window or Buddy Info window, the AIM program will quit and the "Unexpectedly Quit" notice will pop up.
In regards to iChat, I did a clean install of iChat using the Tiger install disk. However, when I launch iChat and go through the initial setup it freezes up and I get the spinning rainbow and have no choice but to do a force quit.
Any ideas as to what the problem may be?

    Hi
Seeing you re-installed iChat you will need to run the 10.4.10combo http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx10410comboupdat eppc.html to bring iChat back upto date.

  • IChat vs AIM vs other IM's for mac newbie

I’m a new Mac user and so far, I’ve been a little underwhelmed (my first experience setting up the mac was frustrating in that after spending time with Apple on the phone, they informed me that one iMac cannot share the same Photo Library between two different users without an external harddrive… UGH!). But I’m not one to give up quickly.
I recently bought a webcam for my work pc so I can check in on my wife/kids at home. I was running AIM here at work and setup an AIM ID for my wife but used that ID within iChat. Both the video and sound quality leave much to be desired. I bought an PC Magazine Editor’s Choice webcam (Logitech Quickcam). I’ve heard that video is quite good between two macs.
What would you recommend to improve my video/audio? I’ve looked at other IM’s but it gets a little confusing between single-protocal/multi-protocal, what’s available on mac, and what supports video. Maybe there’s a better combination than AIM on PC to iChat on Mac. Maybe I should run AIM on both? Yahoo on both (not sure I can)?
Any help you could give would be much appreciated.

    Umm,
The blurb says it can be done lower right.
Unfortunately the Support Link and then Macintosh leads to the old AIM 4.7 for Mac help
I am not sure what else to suggest.
Does the AIM accounts page for your Account need a setting changed ?

  • IChat to AIM (PC) video problem - White Screen

I'm new to iChat so I apologize in advance for my lack of experience...
I've been trying to use iChat to Video Chat with a buddy on AIM (PC). We can't seem to get it to work and I was wondering if there were any changes I/we needed to make to our programs/systems/networks for this to work.
I should also add that my AIM buddy doesn't have a camera... but she should still be able to see and hear me, right?
    Thanks for the help

    Hi John,
For you to use iChat to video chat to him he needs XP and AIM 5.9 or Trillian Pro.
The AIM applictaion needs a bit more setting up in that it needs "tuning (see message 570 onwards)" to the Mic and camera. Access in now in the Buddy list My AIM menu item.
Both need allowing through the XP Firewall. If at Service Pack 2 it is like this If not then disable the XP firewall. (use something else though).
This does not include instructions for his modem.

  • AVHCD my HD experience so far with Premier Elements 7

    Hi
I thought I would try and contribute to the ongoing discussion about HD video, and in particular the use of AVHCD media with Premiere Elements 7. I
wandered into this arena rather than planning my way in but luckily I am having a good time. I hope my experiences may be useful to others here.
My aim is to shoot and edit video at the best quality possible but remaining comfortably within the current capability of my PC and its
    operating system.
I am no editing expert by any means but I have been editing my home movies for several years using various bits of software and operating systems
    along the way.
I am brand new to the world of High Definition and I currently intend to playback my movies on a Sony PS3 and a high definition tv. I archive my
finished movies on hard disk rather than burn to DVD. I dont yet have a blueray burner.

    Current workflow
    ================
I have only been experimenting for a couple of days but this is my current
    workflow.
I shoot my video in HD HQ.
I use the supplied Sony software to get the files into my PC
I convert those files into MPEG2HD using Free AVCHD Converter V1.0 as recommended on this site.
I leave the output format as standard except I raise the Video bitrate to 2500 Kbps as recommended in other posts on here.
I use the HDV 720p 25 preset for my project
I output as a PC file, MPEG HD720p
Using these settings I have a pleasant editing experience and the finished product is certainly much better than using standard definition. When I add my clips to the timeline I don't get the red bar across the top of them unless I add an effect. This saves rendering time and provides for smooth playback within Premiere Elements 7 as I check my edits.
Now, I have no idea if what I am doing is correct and I would dearly love to hear suggestions for how I can improve things further. The good news for me however is that I can use my new camera without having to upgrade my PC.
    Regards
    Ken

    Ken,
Welcome to the forum, and thank you for taking the time to post your workflow.
While the CPU could be beefier, it's comforting to see that your I/O sub-system (your HDD's) are set up better than 99% of the people out there, for editing. Way to go! BTW, if your CPU is doing it for you, I'd not worry about it, until you build your next machine. You are getting more out of yours, than many with Quad-core chips, and some with dual-Quads. That is a testament to a strong machine and a clean one too.
With your sucess, I feel that your workflow might well be a useful baseline for others.
    Thanks for posting,
    Hunt

  • Can't initiate a video conference from Mac to PC wtih iChat and AIM

I am using iChat on an iMac intel core duo and trying to video chat with my dad on a PC laptop using AIM 5.9. We can both invite the other to video chat, however when either one click to accept various things keep us from initiating the chat. One message we get says a firewall may be the problem. My firewall is turned off. He is running Norton. But we tried with that firewall turned off as well as the windows firewall tirned off. At the moment we are on the same network connected via a 2wire router (Myself wirelessly and he via ehternet). I have tried various settings with the router firewall including setting the PC to DMZ and the Mac to the settings specified on portforwarding.com.
When I initiate the conversation from the Mac he gets a brief flicker like the video window is opening and then it closes; meanwhile my computer says waiting for response until it gives up. When he initiates the video chat and I accept I get the message that the chat failed because I did not respond even thougth I clicked accept. He gets a mesage that the chat failed and the reason may be a firewall.
Any ideas on how to get this to work so that we are able to video chat. Also he will be returning home in a few days and using a linksys router.
Any help or ideas to try would be great

    Dear Ralph,
Sorry for the confusion, I did assume you were an Apple empoyee. Your knowledge about iChat is stunning. I appreciate your effort to help users by sharing your knowledge with such dedication. I do apologise.
    Regarding:
Port forwarding is being automated and static ip addresses will be generated automatically.
Let's call it redirection (the handshake indicates the port to forward to).
When you have NAT running in your home you have the entire Internet available to all your machines. What if you have a machine behind the NAT gateway that needs to be accessed from outside? This is where redirection comes in. Redirection allows incoming traffic to be sent to a machine behind the NAT gateway.
    An example:
rdr on tl0 proto tcp from any to any port 80 -> 192.168.1.20
This line redirects TCP port 80 (web server) traffic to a machine inside the network at 192.168.1.20. So, even though 192.168.1.20 is behind your gateway and inside your network, the outside world can access it.
The from any to any part of the above rdr line can be quite useful. If you know what addresses or subnets are supposed to have access to the web server at port 80, you can restrict them here:
rdr on tl0 proto tcp from 27.146.49.0/24 to any port 80 -> \
    192.168.1.20
This will redirect only the specified subnet. Note this implies you can redirect different incoming hosts to different machines behind the gateway. This can be quite useful. For example, you could have users at remote sites access their own desktop computers using the same port and IP address on the gateway as long as you know the IP address they will be connecting from:
rdr on tl0 proto tcp from 27.146.49.14 to any port 80 -> \
    192.168.1.20
rdr on tl0 proto tcp from 16.114.4.89 to any port 80 -> \
    192.168.1.22
rdr on tl0 proto tcp from 24.2.74.178 to any port 80 -> \
    192.168.1.23
A range of ports can also be redirected within the same rule:
rdr on tl0 proto tcp from any to any port 5000:5500 -> \
    192.168.1.20
rdr on tl0 proto tcp from any to any port 5000:5500 -> \
    192.168.1.20 port 6000
rdr on tl0 proto tcp from any to any port 5000:5500 -> \
    192.168.1.20 port 7000:*
These examples show ports 5000 to 5500 inclusive being redirected to 192.168.1.20. In rule #1, port 5000 is redirected to 5000, 5001 to 5001, etc. In rule #2, the entire port range is redirected to port 6000. And in rule #3, port 5000 is redirected to 7000, 5001 to 7001, etc.
Static ip addresses are necissary to ensure that the router does not hand out the same ip twice, hence my question about the data transferred when a user connects his new mac to the one wich was set previously by the user (or other user). I think this information is explained in the Network Traffic Analysis you direct iChat to when they are asked to port forward (manually). I do not know the url by heart but it should be a known link to you.
    Regarding auto response:
Sometimes you have to consider whether a very direct (and unelegant) interveniance in the software outweights the malfunction of an application that is causing a lot of trouble and inconvinience to Mac users. Personally I think that in this case the risk of being disturbed (still the same as anyone who askes for attention using chat or even phone) outweighs the much more irritating and incomprehensible "user did not respond" message and thus not being able to use one of the main features promised and promoted by Apple.
    Yes life is inconsistent,
at least life is not sold to you.
    Regards,
    JPM

  • Should I get a Lumia 925? Experience so far is ba...

So I've used Nokias since forever - viva la Snake.  However it's time to renew again and I'm currently wondering whether to stick with Lumia/winphone after my last year with a Lumia 900.
I've had a looky at the marketing
    http://www.nokia.com/gb-en/phones/compare/?action=productcompareaction&products=1811462-2447774-8089...
    https://www.nokia.com/gb-en/imaging
    http://www.nokia.com/gb-en/phones/phone/lumia925/?cid=ncomprod-fw-src-na-uklfdevicerangelumia9252013...
and as always it looks like great features thre for the taking.  However my experience has left me sour over a number of things :
1 - I still have an N90 that is unable to backup the mail store (SMS) to PC, so I can never truely have them saved and then wipe it to give to someone else
2 - I once managed to bring my otherwise reliable as hell N95 8G that lasted me years
3 - People I know with Lumia 800/900/720 etc have all had problems whereby the phone spontaneously reboots - or worse it shows you the red battery screen and refuses to power up or charge (at 1 point the only solution was to sit on it to warm it up before it would start charging!) but I've had this happen on my 900 even when mostly fully charged - why!
4 - Having been used to using Nokia PCsuite 7 to backup and export my SMS/contacts/media to PC (eg SMS as individual files aswell as handy .csv file) and backup the phone itself each month, and take screenshots and browse the phone HD using file explorer apps (been doing all that for years and about 3 previous phones) - I got my Lumia and was pleased to see that winphone7 now had no backup/restore functionality (only when you upgrade - which is like never - meaning no backup/restore when you need it), no export/save of SMS/contacts to files or .csv lists (no more backed up history/logs), and no screenshot functionality.  I even had to use Zune just to get the media to copy over as you can't browse it as a drive.  It feels like I justjumped 10y and 4 phones into the past!
5 - my N95 8G was stunning in its time for photos/video - one of the first videos I shot was fireworks and that looked good even outputting to a HDTV using the equally cool composite output socket on the phone (another lost feature).  However the images from my Lumia 900 have been consistently grainy in low light (even when following online guides on manual settings or just leaving it as auto) or blurry even when using screentouch isntead of button-half-down to prime focus.  It left me with the feeling of digicams that say "8mp" but mean "4mp interlaced" or something. Some of my N95 photos are more crisp and clear than my Lumia 900 ones.
6 - hell I can't even rotate a photo that auto-sensed itself the wrong way round when it was taken - not from the camera-roll at least and not without it editing all the exif data etc to make it act like a new photo - yet this happens to be all thet time if you're taking a photo pointing down and it doesn't know which rotation to use it seems
7 - I know modern phones with demanding power and huge screens drink battery, but I charged my N95 8G once or twie a week.  My Lumia 900 needs charging every night and if I actually use wifi or heaven forbid data during the day I don't even make it to the night - restricting as hell  ><
That's probably not an exhaustive list - but seriously - I feel I lost so much functionality when I went from 4y of N95 8G to the Lumia 900.  As far as I'm aware I don't even have a way to backup/save/export my SMS etc from here when I want to upgrade (I've not installed the latest update just because that means I can technically make it save when I want to now by letting the update run through).  The Lumias also seem to have always had problems which feel like a product that wasn't ever fully quality controlled ot finished testing - things like spontaneous reboots and the red battery screen justs houldn't be happening but years later and lots more models of Lumias out there and I'm still hearing about it?
So ok - what is a guy to do?  Are some of these shortcomings now adjusted?  Is wp8 making up for it all?  Can I backup/restore at will, take screenshots, access/export my SMS etc like I could with 10yo Nokia symbian phones?  I sure as hell hope so

I would buy anything that would protect phone. I personally purchased invisible shield screen protector and clear silicon crystal case. Cases added about 2 mm in thickness but also added extra protection that I can't refuse.
Verizon's replacement policy about damaged phones states that if phone was damaged due to user misuse (say dropped, sat on, water damaged) unless user has a protection plan on the account, replacement will not be given.
