ICloud trash can not empty

When I select empty trash on iCloud mail. I get the message:
Cannot empty folder.
This folder can not be emptied at this time
Clicking OK dismisses the window and no messages have been deleted. I have tried this from more than one Mac, all get the same response.
How can I empty the trash on my account?
Thanks,
Mike

My problem was fixed.  Here's some details.
I contacted Apple for help and they were immediately available and very helpful.  The first person I talked to admitted that the account was showing other issues on his end and he was not sure how to correct it so he bumped it up to the next level.  The second person quickly saw some bigger issues and suggested that "engineering" get involved.  I was told that there should be a resolution in a day or two.
Not waiting for an email I contacted the second level guy two days later.  He wanted to make sure that the iCloud account was set up and enabled (I had disabled it) in Mail on the computer.  He asked me to select Mail > Mailbox > Erase Deleted Items in the iCloud account.  I wasn't sure why I was doing this since the Trash was empty and storage was still showing 4.5GB for Mail, but I did as I was instructed.
After I did that I checked the storage again and it showed 3.8GB!  A few minutes later it had dropped to 618KB!
I asked what they did and he indicated that apparently their servers did not pick up my request to delete soooo many emails at one time.  I had selected almost all of the email to delete all at the same time.
Whether there's more to it than that I'm not sure, and I don't care.  I do know that before I called them there was a problem and after I called them there is no longer a problem.  The key to all of this might be the Bold part above, though.
I will say they were very quick to assign someone to me (within a minute), and very accommodating, and quick to resolve the problem.
I think the original problem stemmed from trying to delete such a huge amount of email at one time.  I don't think I will do that again.

First, never try to empty the Trash in the shell. It's dangerous and unnecessary, and as you've discovered, it doesn't always work.
It's possible that the external drive is malfunctioning, but before you draw that conclusion, quit iPhoto and try again to empty the Trash.

This should help you empty what's currently in the trash, but is no guarantee you got everything related to MacKiller off the drive. See Ogelthorpe's link.

If it were me, I'd get a new hard drive or SSD and put it in an external enclosure. Boot into the recovery partition, format the new drive (not the old one) and install the OS to it. Shut down the Mac, open it up, and swap the drives. You may be able to read your data from the old one externally if you're lucky. If you're very lucky you may be able to use Migration Assistant to move all your stuff to the new drive.
Look at ifixit.com for the exact procedure to get to the drive on your model. If it's a unibody it's pretty simple.

    Thanks everybody for your comments.
I just found a way out from the disscussion : I can't use empty trash or secure empty trash.
The same formula proposed by Zyriab solved my question.

  • Can Not Empty the Trash

For some reason I can not empty my trash. There are over 16,000 items in there and it is really running down my free space on the hard drive. When trying to empty the Trash it keeps saying that there are items locked e.g. whatsnew.htm is locked and therefore I can not continue with the deletion of the items.
Does anyone know why this happens and what I can do to correct the problem? All I want to do empty my trash but this seems to be a little more difficult than it should be!
    Thanks

    Hi Welcome to the Discussions.
Try holding down the option key and select Empty Trash. If that doesn't work, open the trash, control+click on the locked file and select Get Info from the contextual menu. Uncheck Locked in the window that opens and enter your password when asked. Close the window and empty the trash.
If those things don't work there are a few more ways to do it.

    Hi Linc
Thank you for your reply.  It did not work at first, I think there was just to much stuff.  In frustration I held ctlr, alt and cmd keys down then empted the trash and it worked!  I had to repeat the process several times as only a few folders were delt with at a time. but now are all gone.
    Kind regards Dian

  • Can not empty trash on external HD

I have an iMac running 10.6.8.  I have an external 1.5TB HD that I had used for time machine backups. I have moved the time machine backup file to the trash and now the trash will not empty. When I try I get error code -8003.  I tried moving the offending file out of the trash but the finder just tries to make a copy.  Amazingly, after "preparing to copy" for over 24 hours, it said that I didn't have enough hard disk capacity because the file was 37TB.  (Yes, TB -- this is not a typo)  Obviously, there is no way I could have a 37TB file on a 1.5TB hard drive.  Any suggestions to get rid of this file would be appreciated.

You might try reformatting the external drive and see if that helps, but I doubt it. See this for help: How To Fix Error Code 8003 OS X - Easy PC Tutorials.

  • My trash can shows empty and other issues with it...

Ok basically, if i delete anything on my mac it should go to my trash can right?
Well i have a few problems with that as follows:
    1. Everytime i delete something or move something to the trash it asks me to enter my password everytime, then deletes it, this never used to happen and now all of a sudden it does, this started just before the latest lion update and ive tried everything i know to stop it doing it but failed.
    2. When i do delete something, the trash can shows empty on my desktop, and when i open the trash there is nothing inside, so im not able to restore anything if required, so basically if i move anything to trash it just gets permanently deleted instead of storing it in trash first, again this started just before the latest lion update.
I was hoping the update would fix this issue but didnt change it what so ever, i have also tried repairing disk permissions and still no change.
Any ideas on what i can do to fix these problems? Im still new to mac so i dont know all the ins and outs, but any help on this would be appreciated.
    Cheers all,
    Carl

Boot from your recovery partition by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the recovery desktop appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, enter “resetpassword” (without the quotes) and press return. A Reset Password window opens.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

Yet another example of why it's a VERY BAD IDEA to do a clean install of Lion unless you are already VERY familiar with how to tweak the Mac OS. There's a reason Apple engineers removed it as an option. To accomplish it you have to erase your disk; not for the faint hearted.
Do you have a backup? PLEASE don't tell us you did this without a robust backup.
You erased the operating machine, so your computer went to the only place it could find one, the Recovery partition. And it's minimal, so it has to download everything in small chunks to reinstall itself. So yeah, it could take 10 hours.
Here's another option. Do you still have the original disks that came with your machine? Put one in and restart from it. You can reinstall your old system much faster. Then go to the Mac App Store and your purchase history and see if you can redownload Lion (I think that still works).
And this time just do yourself a favor and install per Apple's instructions. When the machine starts into Lion, use Setup ***'t (the first thing that fires up) to migrate from your backup.

There is no solution other than having the device cleared by the former owner. If you are trying to activate an iPad or iPhone and it is asking for a previous owners Apple ID and password, you have encountered the Activation Lock. This is a security feature that prevents thieves from setting up and using a stolen or lost iPad or iPhone. You have no alternative. You must contact the previous owner to get permission to use the device. If you cannot contact the previous owner return the device to where you bought it and get a refund. You will never be able to activate the device and no one can help you do it.

Photo Stream says my iCloud account can not be accessed and I can't get rid of it

    Try this now.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • Trash Can Not Functioning Correctly Mavericks

Fresh install of Mavericks on my new Mac Mini late 2012 core i7.  Now on 10.9.1.  Thought this was a bug due to Mavericks being in its infancy.  Basically, every time I stick something in the trash it doesn't indicate that is got something in it.  I thought this was a bug until I opened the trash can and found tons of files in there.  Even though I tried holding down the mouse on the trash can, the "empty" was shaded out.  The only way I found so far to empty my trash was to use a terminal command rm -rf ~/.Trash/*

Strange, everything appears to be ok.  The trash emptied securely when using terminal, but there was this message:
rm: /Users/daz/.Trash/iLok License Manager.app/Contents/Frameworks/QtCore.framework/Versions/4: Permission denied
iLok is my license manager app for Pro Tools.  I installed version 10 followed by 11 and I rememeber trashing the duplicate app as I had already had the former that I actually moved to my utilities folder.
Bottom line is that my trash is completely empty and is behaving as it should be.  Touch would it behaves itself.  I've had macs for years and never had a problem regarding the trash.
