IDE Configuration

My motherboard is a K7T Turbo version 3 (MS6330). I'm running WinXP Pro with an AMD XP2400 processor if it's relevant. I have two HD's, CD burner, DVD burner, DVD Rom and an LS-120. I also have a Maxtor PCI IDE card installed. What would be the best configuration for installing the drives in my system? What should I put on which channel? The way that I currently have it set up is as follows:
IDE1 master - HD (with OS)
IDE1 slave - DVD Rom
IDE2 master - DVD burner
IDE2 slave - CD burner
PCI IDE1 master - 2d HD
PCI IDE1 slave - LS-120
Everything currently works fine, but was wondering if there would be a better way. The only slight problem that I have is that the Maxtor card doesn't always recognize the LS-120 on the boot screen, but the drive still works.

The ATAPI protocol was added to ATA/IDE specification for the purpose of allowing ATAPI devices (e.g. CD-ROM, Tape Backup, Super Floppy, ZIP, DVD-ROM, CD-R/RW, et. al) to be slaved to HDD, which is why until very recently every new CD, DVD, ZIP and tape drive came from the factory with the jumper set to slave by default (and many still do).
All companies at one time recommended these devices be the slave, whether or not another drive was on the same channel.  But, in this realm of computers, things change - rapidly.  These days, ATAPI devices usually are right at home as master or slave without conflict or complaint.
Its been a long time since I read the ATA/ATAPI specification or any white papers, so my memory may be failing me, but I believe current ATA/ATAPI (i.e. EIDE) controllers are still plagued by simultaneous access limitations that SCSI isn't.
If my memory still serves me, then it continues to be prudent to position the two most-utilized drives on different channels, and they should be master.  In a typical use scenario, the most-utilized drives are hard drives.  In this case, it is better to configure two hard drives as masters on each channel, and two ATAPI devices as slaves on each channel.  As a rule of thumb, of course, not written in stone.
Not only do all chipsets at least since Intel 440LX, VIA MVP3, ALI Aladdin V, and SIS 5598 support independent device timing, it actually works!  Independent device timing was introduced in chipsets prior to those listed, but it didn't always work as advertised, which was partially the fault of peripheral manufacturers who refused to comply more stringently with ATA/ATAPI specifications or used out-dated interface controllers ("because a CD-ROM drive doesn't need UltraDMA") and firmware.
Driver support was another issue early-on, but had become reasonably good by Windows 98 Second Edition, if not 98 Gold, provided one used the default IDE drivers supplied by Microsoft.  We won't harken back to those painful days of VIA's early 4-in-1 driver 'misadventures'.  NT4 requires SP3 or higher.
Today, ATA/133 HDD can co-exist just fine with MWDMA-2 through ATA/33 CD and DVD drives, with no loss of performance above that similarly found with two hard drives attached to the same channel.  Both devices operate at their respective modes, when enabled in BIOS and device drivers, excepting some unusual circumstance.
My above comments assume the drives and mainboards in question are all reasonably current (less than 5 years old), not old clunkers.  First generation UDMA/33 hard drive electronics often had flaws or didn't play nice with other drives on the same channel.  First generation UDMA/33 capable chipsets weren't much better, but we've come a long way since Intel 430TX and VIA VP1.
The only potential short-coming I can see with your setup is the one HDD attached to PCI IDE controller card.  If its a reasonably new HDD, it might cut-in to your PCI bandwidth to a greater extent than a CD burner would, and PCI bandwidth is already strained nearly to the limit.
If one of those CD drives is an old 4x burner or that LS-120 is one of the early versions that only operates in PIO mode, then all bets are off.

  • 848P Neo-V Bios on chip IDE Configuration

Can someone advise me on the proper setting for the 848P Neo-V IDE configuration when using only IDE devices. I am not using any SATA devices. Should I be using the Legacy Mode or the Native Mode for the On-Chip ATA Operate Mode ?
I am aware when using any SATA devices that Native Mode is the correct setting. When just using IDE hardrives and IDE DVD-Roms should I set this to Legacy ? There is no real clear rule to this as I have searched all over the Internet and can't seem to get a definitive answer.  Any advise is appreciated.

You should find alot of answers in this forum. It is similar to the 865PE and 875P Neo setup.
    Native Mode
    SATA Only
    PATA Keep Enabled
    PATA Channel Selection (Both)
    Set SATA as RAID (No)
    The rest as defaults.

  • On-Chip IDE Configuration for AMI BIOS ver 6.1

Please help with my IDE configuration. I cleared my CMOS that's why I have to configure it again.
    - One (1) SATA Seagate 80gig HDD (this is where my OS is installed)
    - One (1) SATA Seagate 160gig HDD
    - One (1) IDE LG DVD Writer
I tried to configure it based on some of the posts in these forums but only the SATA drives were always detected.
I know for sure that my DVD ROM is still functioning since it works perfectly before I cleared my CMOS.
    Thanks.

    Thanks NovJoe for the response.
    I already configured my bios.
    On-Chip ATA Operate Mode: Legacy
    ATA Configuration: S-ATA Only
    P-ATA Keep Enabled: Yes
    P-ATA Channel Selection: Both
After configuring my bios, I also tried to reconnect my DVD-ROM IDE cable and it solved my problem.

  • MSI 945G Neo-F BIOS SATA/IDE Configuration

    Hi,
Rather than just keep guessing, I'll just ask.  I'm building a new PC with the MSI 945G Neo-F (7176-040) motherboard.  I will be using a Western Digital 250 GB SATA hard drive and two IDE CD/DVD R/W drives.  In the BIOS, there are different ways to configure the drive setup and I am confused as to which is correct.  In the past, when I attempted to configure drives, I couldn't get it right.  I think this is mostly because I have always used IDE and now, with SATA, it's not so easy.  When I try to configure this combination, one or both don't get recognized.  This time, I'm going to rely on those that have this procedure down, to lead me in the right direction.  This is a straightforward setup...no RAID...just one hard drive and two CD/DVD-type ROMs, but both SATA and IDE need to be incorporated.  I appreciate any assistance I can get.
    Thanks...Vince

Vinz, this board is very straight forward. There is no RAID on this board. You may read the P4 Unoffiical Guide on the SATA + PATA setup for the details.
Where can I find this guide, link please, as I am having the same issue with a BSOD while installing windows with the cause mentioned as pci.sys

  • ECC 6.0 IDES configuration of source system in BI 7.0

Recently I have installed the ECC 6.0 IDES version on my desktop it has both mySAP and BI on the same system. I tried to create new source system under SAP folder using RSA1 got the following message.
"No entry for BW_USER in table RSADMIN available"
    ANY SUGGESTIONS/IDEAS ARE WELCOME
    Thanks
    Kannan

    Hi Kannan,
To connect both systems you need a background user (like ALEREMOTE) in both systems.
In the source system creation, if you haven't created the RFC connection between BW and ECC you shouldn't select one (chek if DM0 is your ECC system), you should use the three fields below (app server, system ID and system number). Then enter both users and passwords (source system and local system).
In some moment you'll be prompted to log on to ECC, there you should use a DIALOG user, for example, your user. This user should have administrator rights (if you have SAP_ALL it's ok). ECC system should be open for modifications to be able to create the system.
If you still have problems with the users, just include SAP_ALL to both background users and should work.
    Hope this clarifies.

  • Issue with IDE configuration for creating Webservice from EJB

    Hi All,
I was trying to create a webservice from a EJB(session bean).I executed following steps :
    1. I created the bean in one EJB project.
    2. Then created another Enterprise Project in whichEJB projects .jar file is included.
    3. Now when i right click "ejb-jar.xml" to create a webservice ,webservice wizard
appears in which Server and WS runtime configuration are set properly.
But it displays following error message on the top : "Select a service Project Type".
If i click on the link on the wizard to select a "service Project type" the drop down for the same comes empty. The value for 'Service Project' is already defaulted
as "Webservice Project ".If i go to windows->preferrences->Webservcies->ProjectTopology i found two entries in the service project type list :

But there is no entry for Webservice Type project. Can any one help me out
how to solve this issue ?

    Hi Ashish,
perhaps you launch the Web service wizard from the wrong location (i.e. not selecting the SEI you want to use). Did you strictly follow the steps described in the <a href="http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nwce10/helpdata/en/44/f36fa8fd1d41aae10000000a114a6b/frameset.htm">documentation</a> for creating the web service?

I currently have one HD on IDE 1, DVD(master) and DVD-RW(slave) on IDE 2.
Can I use IDE 3 to control one of the drives so that I don't need to slave anything, and is it even worth the effort with regard to performance?  I can't find anything in the manusl relating to using IDE 3 other than RAID.
    Thanks,

you can do it with one drive only, see article in bottom forum, however i would use normal ide and disable raid in bios myself to save boot time

  • SATA/IDE channel configuration issues

    Ok here's the setup:
First SATA Channel: Seagate 7200RPM 80GB HDD
Primary IDE Channel: LG 52x CD-ROM Drive
Secondary IDE Channel: Western Digital 7200RPM 160GB HDD
    OS: Windows XP SP1
    Mobo: MSI 865PE Neo2-P MS-6728 Version 2
The bios can detect all drives.
If I use the recommended On-chip IDE Configuration mode as mentioned on page 3-23 in the manual, Windows XP loads and then goes through the process of detecting the Primary and Secondary IDE channel.
After detecting it reports that Windows reports that the "Driver is not intended for this platform".
If you look under Administrative Tools in Control Panel is refuses to detect the PATA drive as well.
I tried swapping the PATA and the CD drives around but the above applied.
If I try the following drive configuration and set the bios ATA Configuration to PATA & SATA then all drives are detected in Windows:
First SATA Channel: Seagate 7200RPM 80GB HDD
Primary IDE Channel Master: LG 52x CD-ROM Drive
Primary IDE Channel Slave: Western Digital 7200RPM 160GB HDD
So what's up? I've tried tinkering around with Legacy/Native, PATA/SATA Only etc and I've run out of ideas.

I got similiar problem as b52 when I plugin an old P-ATA deathstar drive as master on first primary IDE and a LITE-ON dvd-rom as master on secondary. When I enter Windows the hardware auto wiz starts working and after a little while reports that two devices of type "IDE channel" have "Driver is not intended for this platform". I currently use the settings Danny recommends above. Weird thing is both the deathstar and the LITE-ON drive seem to work great. Of course I want to get rid of the exclamation marks in my device manager though. I read elsewhere drive emulation software could be a culprit, and renaming/deleting atapi.sys could be a problem solver - but not for me it turned out. Anyone got other methods to try out?

  • System configuration question for HD editing on new system.

I've been editing in premiere for close to 9 years but have stuck mostly to DV video.  I recently bought Production Premium and wanted to jump into editing HD.   Here is the system I installed the Production Premium CS4 on;  (I will use Premiere, AE, and PhotoShop the most)
Processor: Intel Core i7 960 CPU
    CPU Speed: 3.2Ghz
    CPU Cores: 4
    CPU Threads: 8
    L3 Cache size: 8MB
Memory: DDR3-1333 (PC3 10666) 6GB Triple Channel (I will upgrade to 24GB once the price on the 4gig chips drops)
Motherboard: Intel x58 Chipset South Bridge: ICH10R Socket 1366
Graphics: ATI Radeon HD4890 1GB (Is this OK?)
OS Drive: Capacity: 1TB WD(Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit)
    Speed: 7,200 RPM
Video Drive: 2 1TB Seagate Drives in raid 0 (mobo raid)
    Speed:7,200 RPM
    Buffer mem: 32mb
Additional Information: 24x DVDRW Double Layer, 700-watt power supply
I have two IDE 120gig WD drives I was thinking of putting in a raid 0 for the scratch.  Would this be advisable?  Would the IDE configuration be quick enough for this purpose?  How much space should I dedicate to scratch (do I really need the full 240gigs)?
I will buy two more 1TB Seagate Drives for more video storage.  would running all 4 of the seagate 1TB drives in raid 0 be beneficial for HD editing?  or should I just create a separate raid configuration for those two additional drives?
(I will backup to a network drive(s) so I want the system itself to be built for speed [without getting obscenely expensive])
What is your opinion on addition hardware such as the matrox cards for help with HD editing?  (I used the RT2000 with the DV editing and it was an "adventure" to say the least to get that one working right.)
    Thanks,
    -Tom T.

For some general information about RAID configurations, look here: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/525263?tstart=0
As long as you can stuff 2 IDE drives in your case, go ahead and use those in a raid0 for a fixed pagefile of 8 - 12 GB and set your scratch to this raid. If you want to use this array for temporary storage of downloads, etc. no problem.
The two additional disks would be used best if you create either a 4 disk raid5 to have at least some redundancy or as spearate disks. One for projects, the other one for exports and your current raid0 for media. I would not advise a 4 disk raid0 because of the chance of disk failure.
I would not use anything Matrox, better to invest that in a good raid controller, so you will profit from the performance gain with all applications, or by increasing memory.

  • How do I set up SATA HD without any IDE HD?

    Hi.
I'm a newbie in the process of building a new computer.
It's been fun -putting together components physically- but...
...I'm stuck here ---> My plan is to use just one HD for now -Raptor 36.7gb- along with a 3.5" floppy diskette drive and a DVD Recorder.
    The 3.5" drive is connected.
My Raptor HD is connected to "SATA1" on the board.
But I'm a little puzzled when trying to figure the IDE cable placement for my DVD Recorder- Do I connect it to "PRI IDE" or "SEC IDE"?
And does it matter that I will not have an IDE HD installed?
(And I'm guessing the IDE LED on my case will never be lit?)
I thank you in advance for any help.

Don't worry about the lack of DOS prompt - XP doesn't use DOS at all!    That's why you boot straight from CD; in the old days you'd have to boot to DOS from a floppy to load CD drivers, and only then could you start Wndows setup from CD.
You don't need to press F6 to load drivers, the SATA controller should just work, and you can load all the chipset drivers, etc, that you need from the motherboard CD or whatever once XP's in.    XP has a lot of drivers in it anyhow, I think that's partly why the install's four times bigger than 98!
Why is the setup not working?   Is is not recognising the hard drive?   It should say something like "Checking drive XXXX on XXX", and it'll say how big the drive is and that, and a yellow bar goes across!
I've got my Seagate SATA HDD on the same controller as you (SATA 1), and XP Pro saw it no problem.
If Setup just isn't seeing the HDD, you may want to check in the BIOS and make sure the SATA controller is enabled:
    - under "Integrated Peripherals", select the "On-Chip IDE configuration" menu
(... er .... hang on, got to reboot my machine to check - I'll get back and edit this! ....)
Okay, back now, where was!?   Ah, yes.   Basically there's a number of configurations of this, and it also depends which BIOS version you've got.   With XP you can use either Legacy or Native mode - Native uses extra interrupts which older OS's can't handle, so as I'm running 98 as well, I use Legacy.   I'll give you my settings, using BIOS 1.7:
    Mode - Legacy
    Configuration - P-ATA+S-ATA
    P-ATA keep enabled - Yes
    Combined modde option - S-ATA 1st channel
Configure S-ATA as RAID - No
I've got a feeling this disables one of the normal IDE channels though ... anyway persevere with various combinations until both the DVD drive and the HDD appear on the "Standard CMOS Setup page of the BIOS.
Try searching the forum for older posts on this - this has been a hot topic of discussion, there are many posts describing the various combinations!
Then, it'll also be worth checking "Boot device select" under "Advanced BIOS features", and make sure the HDD is set as a boot device in there.    Once you've got past the initial Setup stages, you can remove the CD from the boot list again.
Let us know how it goes, don't hesitate to keep asking questions!

  • Do you store IDE-specific files in your repository?

    Hi ,
In [Continuous Integration|http://martinfowler.com/articles/continuousIntegration.html] , The author state that
"You must put everything required for a build in the source control system, however you may also put other stuff that people generally work with in there too. IDE configurations are good to put in there because that way it's easy for people to share the same IDE setups."
This is quite contradict with my personal believe that IDE-specific configurations shouldn't be check-in to source repository. Doesn't it mean that team members have no freedom in choosing their IDE? Even they agree to use the same IDE, how can you manage the compatibility of IDE configuration files across various versions. Different team members may prefer different version of the IDE. Even with the same version, the IDE configuration files are very easy to get modified by all sort of actions. Do all those changes should be check-in to the repository?
I am re-organizing my repository so I am interested to know whether you keep your IDE-specific files in your repository. If you do, please share with me how you deal with the above problems.
    Thanks very much

    The story:
A programmer left the organisation about two years ago. Part of the exit process is to totally wipe the harddisk (stored passwords, history, etc, etc). We lost the only working ant-build-scripts for our production branch... Not long after that the decree came down from on high that every-single-iddy-biddy-farking-file used to build the sucker WILL BE IN VSS.... ABSAPOSITIVELY NO EXCEPTIONS!
I for one agree whole heartedly with that decree, because I was the poor noobie (as in new to the job, java, weblogic, and web-apps) who having just sat in the nice hot seat, had to learn all about "building big complex java projects" really farking soon now, like yesterday... it delayed the release of a "critical" production patch for a month... after two weeks of me trying to get it building (with no real end in sight) we stripped all the high/medium risk RFC's out of the development branch, tested it double time, and shipped it.
It's not fascism... it's professionalism.... McRisk McManagement.

  • Problem when booting from PATA drive on IDE-3 with SATA RAID on ICH5R

    Hello,
I have a PATA drive installed as Master on IDE-3 (Promise Controller), using Windows XP as the operating system. I also have an aditional drive as Slave on IDE-3.
I recently bought 2 SATA drives which I would like to use as a RAID array, so I connected them to SER-1 and SER-2, on the ICH5R controller.
I set the On-Chip IDE Configuration as follows:
    Native Mode
    SATA Only
    Keep PATA Active - Yes
    PATA Channel selection - Both
Configure SATA as Raid - Yes
I have my PATA Master IDE-3 drive as the firts boot device...unfortunatly now my system does not boot up.
It goes through the Intel Raid Bios screen, then the Promise Controller screen, and then when it was supposed to start loading windows, the screen remains black for about 2 minutes and after it I receive an error message warning me that Windows has detected a hardware configuration problem.
I went back to BIOS and changed the "Configure SATA as Raid" to NO, and now everything works fine, except for the fact that I have no RAID array installed.
Can anyone help me with this?
    Thanks,
    Mihalis

The PATA IDE channel associated with the Promise controller is exclusively designed to be used as a RAID solution. It seems you have an invalid hardware installation of your 2 EIDE drives. Although you succesfully installed WinXP using that configuration, you're destined to have unpredictable behavior because of it.
WinXP looks to the BIOS first to identify hard drives. Then it does something that no other OS has done before (except maybe Win2K), it attempts to detect the hard drive directly through the wires itself. If it finds something, it installs resources to get it to work right. In your case, WinXP has bypassed the BIOS and detected the drives but doesn't really know where they are. WinXP just knows they are there so it supplied the necessary resources to complete the installation.
That drives that are connected to the Promise controller must use the Promise RAID drivers supplied with your motherboard so that the Promise controller can properly report to the OS. You could have conected the same two drives on the same controller, but they needed to be configured as RAID drives within the Promise controller utility.
To have them recognized as separate drives, you need to define each drive as a stripe, except you would have a 1 + 0 stripe instead of a 1 + 1 stripe. The drives are still connected the same way (Master/Slave) as you have them now. This congiguration would allow you to take advantage of the Ultra ATA 133 feature of that channel as long as you attached hard drives which support that standard.
Finally, you would set the "Onboard Promise IDE" menu as "RAID" to have the drives properly recognized through the BIOS. Currently, you have that set as "S-ATA" but you have no S-ATA drives installed on that controller.
I realize this does not resolve your original problem, but at this point, I would recommend that you back-up data at your earliest convenience and start over.
If you do decide to start over, you may want to consider attaching your S-ATA drives to the promise controller instead of on the Intel controller. Aside from getting better performance, it makes for a much simpler install through the Promise controller utility and then everything is manageable through the PAM utility at the desktop.
