Identify spamming email client
In the mappings file I allowed relaying for the subnet in our network. Now if one of those clients in our network gets infected with a trojan and starts sending many emails, is there a way to catch such a client so that I can block his IP address ? I know the imsimta qm and the mta logging files but that does not show specifc answers to identify the client. Is there any cli that sorts the number of emails sent sorted by originating IP address or what is the proper ways to solve the problem ?
imsimta qm top
will give you the top 10 senders.
You can put log_connection- 1 or 2 in your option.dat, and get ip addresses logged in mail.log_current.
you can also implement ip throttling, per the documentation to slow such problem users down.
you can use the mappings file to block such, as well.

I am running on an iMac OS X 10.6.3 using Firefox 3.6.3 as my default browser and I use Postbox 1.1.5 as my email client. Anytime I click on a link within an email message two instances of Firefox open, one with my home page and one with the site the link was meant for. This happens only when Firefox is not already open. If Firefox is running and a link is clicked on it opens normally within the open instance of Firefox. I have contacted Postbox and am currently awaiting a response to see if they have any suggestions. While this is not a serious issue it is a bit annoying. I have Firefox set to open new links in tabs not new instances of windows, so it shouldn't be that. Any help in getting this to stop would be greatly appreciated.

Spam Email Server Account Hijacked
Hello everyone,
I've been having a lot of trouble with one particular email server. I've posted a couple of questions but nobody has answered me so I went and re-installed the whole server by changing it's static IP and adding an Airport Extreme in between so that the server only does DNS, Open Directory, File Sharing and Email.
Everything it's been going well until one user started receiving email notifications about mail returned messages.
I've tried several things:
- Removed the non SSL website so I only left the Webmail on 443
- Changed to more secure passwords
- Lock the account after 10 bad passwords (the user gets blocked every couple of hours)
- Deactivate the POP protocol as nobody is using it, we are only using
- Tried blocking some Russian IPs because I noticed that all the emails are Reply To the domain ngs.ru but from the logs it looks like it's going through locally.
My user has only Macs and iOS products so even though it's a mixed environment I don't think there could be a Malware doing this.
I don't know what else can I do, I really want to avoid the server getting blacklisted and I've been looking for help so I would really appreciate if someone can provide me some guidance.

I'll really appreciate anyone's help.I've been getting a lot of bounce backs from the same SMTP server as you to our email domain as well.
The offending server mwinf5d55.orange.fr is sending "backscatter" spam which should be simply dropped by them instead of bouncing back to the "FROM" address.
Because of this problem of bounced emails, I've tweaked our SPF (Sender Policy Framework) DNS TXT entry for our email domain to help receiving mailservers know what our legitimate OUTBOUND smtp mail servers actually are. This should allow correctly configured email servers to drop any email from mwinf5d55.orange.fr because it is not a valid source of email for our domain.

Some details that I've dug up:
The SMTP server at orange.fr is accepting mail based on forged FROM: addresses which bounce back to you by the receiving target TO: address mailservers.
Eg. From your email bounce back message: host mail.ru[94.100.176.20] said: 550 spam message discarded.
I'm not sure if the spammer is using the mwinf5d55.orange.fr smtp server as an open relay or if it's using someone else's smtp username and password to send mail.
If you look at the email headers of the original bounced (spam) email that caused the backscatter it shows for example (from one of our bounces that I've received):

When you look up the IP address source of that email it shows that it is coming from "JSC Kazakhtelecom, West Kazakhstan Affiliate".

If you lookup the original source email and find that it's from your original user's computer then you have a problem. If it's from a compromised machine overseas that's sending forged spam on your user's behalf, then there's not too much you can do about it short of publishing a correct SPF record.

Disable the email client selection prompt for forms
Hello,
I am wondering if you might help me. When hitting the "email to" button in a pdf form, by default the select email client window pops up.
I have been searching in vain (sofar) to prevent this window from appearing in the first place (at first launch Adobe).
I know I can check the "don't show again" checkbox from within the dialog box, but I don't want the dialog box to appear in the first place, because I don't want users to see it at first launch of Reader and don't want to have to manually (let the users) check the "don't show again" checkbox. I need to be able to deploy this settings (the mail client selection window to NOT show up) to over 100 users.
Here is what I have tried sofar.
Using free registry snapshot tool Registry Watch, I have identified the keys HKEY_Local_Machine\software\Microsoft\windows\Currentversion\Installer\Userdata\S-1-5-18\ Products\90401210900063d11c8ef10054038389c\usage\OutlookMapi2
and HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Cryptography\RNG as changing keys whenever I turn on and off the show this dialog box.
However, both keep changing to completely new values.
If I manually enter the values of these keys to how they were when the dialog box was not displayed, it still keeps displaying the window. So it is not possible to hardcode these keys with a fixed value.
When I turn the dialog box back on, the keys HKEY_USERs\"user"\software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\9.0\AValert , HKEY_USERs\"user"\software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\9.0\AValert\cCheckbox are deleted, but when I turn the dialog box off again from within Reader
these keys don't return anymore.....
So it is difficult to pinpoint a specific (set of) key(s) and particular values.
Also disabling and enabling send mail api from within Reader, but this didn't help either (needed for email client to work from Reader in the first place).
Looked for xml's or ini that might change after enabling or disabling the prompt, but none found, neither in my profile, nor all users profile, nor C:\Program Files\Adobe\....
Any feedback wold be much appreciated.Try making sure your default email program is set under Edit > Preferences > Internet category > Internet Settings ...Programs tab in Acrobat.
You can also try doing a Help > Repair Acrobat installation since you installed Outlook after installing Acrobat. -
Email client problems. Emails stored in my saved folders are missing? What gives?
I've lost all my "saved" emails in my folders?! (Mac email client) The folders are there, the contents are gone!
I would also like to know about the company directory question.
Is it just really well hidden, or actually not present.
If not present, when will i be available?
In general, I'm also missing a feature to enable a full sync/indexing localy on the phone.
Todays phones has tonns of memory and CPU power, and for the user to have the phone look up the calling party directly is verry time saving. Also being able to quickly identify missed and/or placed calls is verry usefull. -
When I send an email it says that it is sent, but it never gets to the recipient. I am using multiple email addresses to check this and have looked in spam and all folders and the message is just not actually going through. I can log in to web-mail and the message appears in the sent folder and I can resend from web-mail and instantly the mail is received. I also installed another email client program and it is able to send mails and they go through instantly. Only Thunderbird is having issues with this. I have tried uninstalling and rebooting and then re-installing and after setup I still can not get emails to go through. If this is something simple with a setting for Thunderbird I would love a fix as we have been using Thunderbird for 6+ years. Otherwise I will just have to use the other program as it works with no mess

Hi everybody,
From 1 week i'm receiving spam email on my (icloud) email address: It's strange, because i never diffused and used that address, but ok spam is spam.
The problem is that the same email are arrived by unknown addresses ON a unknown addresses!! Yes, the receiver addresses aren't mine but however I received the mails on my icloud account!!
Why? How i can do for resolve this problem?

Thanks in advance.Something is miserably broken with Verizon's mail filters. A large portion of the email THAT I WANT AND/OR NEED is blocked yet the garbage email messages are sent through.
I cannnot send email using any program other than the web page. I used to be able to send email from my phone and from outlook on my computer, but something changed on their side as the outgoing mail server no longer recognizes me. It says that my password is incorrect, yet I am able to log into the email system to get my mail. I have been using the internet for over 20 years (yes, I know, I was working with a startup ISP in 1994, I am old). I know how to configure SMTP and POP mail clients. -
I just received a spam email 2 mins after I purchased from iTunes - this means my details are not secure and I would guess my card details aren't any more either. Anyone else getting this issue? Copy of email below:

They have your email address, but there is no evidence that your account was hacked. However, if you have any concerns, change your password.

Open "mailto" links from Contacts with Email client?
Hey guys,
I'm using the Contacts feature from iCloud.com on Windows 7. The problem I have with it is that even though the links to email addresses start with "mailto:" they are still opening with the Mail application on iCloud.com, instead of with my email client (Windows Live Mail). Is there any way to fix this?

I have been looking into this today and as I said the error is due to 'Google tool bar'
Lots of people use google toolbar, so surly there must be away around this error. My client it using Windows 7

Which email client / solution do you use?
I was wondering what email client is everybody using out there. Just got a new computer and am setting up arch on it. I've used evolution, thunderbird, and elm and pine (way back in the day). I'm a recent KDE convert from gnome (no thoughing rotten veggies please and was wondering what experiences people have had with kmail. Also, it seems that thunderbird is the only one with build in spam filtering. I got inordenate amounts of this stuff so that was nice while i was using. I used to do the whole fetchmail / procmail / spamassassin / sendmail thing when i was using redhat. Anyway, just wondering if anybody had any suggestions and what works best form them?

Email client and calender for StarOffice
Just purchased StarOffice 8. Was puzzled to discover that there was no email client and calender, as there was in Star Office 5. What to do, what email client and calender shall I use? Is Sun recommending Thunderbird, or anything else? How do I get it?
Thanks to the folks at the Microsoft Outlook for Mac Community who solved my problem!
While I am unsure what causes this problem, once I added the user who is receiving spam from me to my Macbook Address Book App, then emails sent using whichever mail client are no longer tagged as spam.
To me this points to a Mac/OS X problem because both email clients - Outlook for Mac and Apple Mac Mail have the same challenge, regardless of the email delivery method used- Exchange or POP.
Shame on the rude folks at the Apple Support line who told me to reinstall the OS before anything else. -
Reporting spam emails from Apple

I have been receiving spam emails from someone who would like me to believe they are from Apple. Clearly not as they're full of spelling mistakes, plus they have ended up in my Spam folder.
I would like to inform Apple but am struggling to find relevant contact details.

Does threading work for email notifications in your email client?

We're trying to get a pulse from the community on what email clients and platforms you guys are using, especially in the case where the threading of email subscriptions isn't working. I have heard that threads can be grouped in Entourage on a Mac.
Can anyone Mac/Entourange users confirm this?
Would appreciate everyone's input on what mail client/OS you are using and if threading works for you or not. I know for the majority of you it isn't working, and we're looking at ways this can be addressed.

Here's the first entry: I use Microsoft Outlook on Windows XP and my email notifications don't thread.I think there is some confusion here on what is to be considered
threading and what isn't. Since I may have been causing some of that
confusion by not being as exact as I could have been in my many rants
about the subject, allow me to attempt to clarify a bit.
First, lets start with a sequence of messages to define a topic (I am
trying to avoid the word thread here). Somebody starts a topic with
message A. The first reply to message A is message B. The second reply
to message A is message see. In flat view the topic will look like this:

Now somebody is going to reply to message B in the topic. In flat view
this will look like:

In threaded view this will look like:

Strictly speaking only such a tree-like view is considered threading.
For instance what Gmail does is not strictly threading (more about that
later). Threading works because every email message has a Message-ID
that is a unique identifier of that message. When an email client
replies to a message it will create a new unique Message-ID for that
message, but it will take the Message-ID from the original and put it in
the References header so email replies have a pointer back to the
original message. If a threading email client receives a message with a
References header and it also has the email message to which that
References header points, the email client will show that message as a
child of the original. (This is still somewhat of a simplification and
skips over multiple IDs and the In-Reply-To header, for the exact
working see RFC 2822 section 3.6.4.)
This is what the whole Mozilla family of email clients does and most of
the old school Unix email clients as well.
What Gmail does (and what you can configure many email clients to do) is
to group messages by subject. Such a group of messages is in Gmail terms
a conversation. Then within that conversation messages are sorted by
date. This is different then threading. If a Gmail user had read
messages A, B and C of our example above and then navigated away, upon
returning to the conversation he will not find message D on the third
position in the conversation, but on the fourth. I think we should (and
I will try to remember to) refer to this behaviour as grouped display,
and not as threaded display.
Now, how can we use this to fix these forums?
The first part is simple: just add a References header to all outgoing
email. Only email clients that are configured to thread will do
something with that, so it will fix threading for those who want to use
threading without breaking anything for the email clients that don't
want to thread.
The impact of this on the Jive advancedemail plugin should be minimal.
Every outgoing email should just set its MessageID to the ID property of
the outgoing ForumMessage then test for the value of the parentMessgeID
property and if it is present set the References header. Append
@mail.forums.adobe.com to all IDs and you are done.
This will not fix the issue for the email clients that use grouping. To
(mostly) fix it for them, the simple solution is to just move the unique
code in the subject line forward until it appears before the "Re: " in
the subject. Email clients that use grouping are aware there might be an
code in the subject to indicate a message is a response (in English
usually "Re: ", other languages use something like "antwoord: " or
"resp: " etc.). They will group based on what is in the subject after
the "Re: " so that will put all the replies together.
It may not entirely fix it though, since the first message in a topic
doesn't have "Re :" it might be you end up with 2 groups, one with just
the first message and one with all the answers.
I already tested this and the Jive email import functionality does
support the code being in a different position, so it is just the
sending part that would need to be modified.
This does have a huge downside for the email clients that use neither
threading nor grouping (such as webmail clients like Squirrelmail and
IMP). If you use such a client and do a simple sort on the subject now
it will sort more or less correctly. If the code moves forward the
sorting there will disappear.
The last and final step / option is to change the Jive email import
functionality not to depend on that code but instead to depend on the
References header that an email client will put in the reply. That is a
significant change on the Jive side (and if Jive is going to do that I
have more suggestions to improve their core email system). Then
everybody can thread, group and sort however he likes, but Jive would
need to define a backup strategy for messages where an email client
fails to include a References header.

File size issue with exporting PDF
We write a newsletter for our daughter's gym and are trying to export a Pages '08 document into a PDF small enough for e-mail. When we export with Best settings the file size is 3.2MB, with Better the file is 4.1MB and with Good the file size is 3.8M
