Identifying computer name on switch port

Hey Everyone,
I wish to build an CMDB for all our computers across the network. We have about 30x C2950 switches and few C3550. I wish to identify the computer name to switch port based on IP / Mac Address.
can this be done?
Let forward to anyone response.
Cheers,
Mark

Hi Mark,
Ping your desktops from each switch and then use the sh ip arp command to the Mac-address of the corresponding machine.
Use the command sh mac-address-table add xxxx.xxxx.xxxx to get the port details for the machine
ms_mla_mgmt_14dc#sh ip arp
Protocol Address Age (min) Hardware Addr Type Interface
Internet 172.16.102.249 3 0008.7434.e4d7 ARPA VLAN1
Internet 172.16.103.243 0 0013.c461.56bb ARPA VLAN1
ms_mla_mgmt_14dc#sh mac-address-table address 0050.5a10.6607
Non-static Address Table:
Destination Address Address Type VLAN Destination Port
0050.5a10.6607 Dynamic 1 GigabitEthernet0/2
ms_mla_mgmt_14dc#
You will only be able to get the information for the devices that are in the same subnet as the management switch IP.

  • Jabber and Meida Interface Service - Switch port

    Hi All,
    here is from Cisco:
Before Cisco Jabber for Windows sends audio media or video media, it checks for Cisco Media Services Interface .
    • If the service exists on the computer , Cisco Jabber for Windows provides flow information to Cisco Media Services Interface . The service then signals the network so that routers classify the flow and provide priority to the Cisco Jabber for Windows traffic.
    • If the service does not exist, Cisco Jabber for Windows does not use it and sends audio media and video media as normal.
My Question is : what does normal means?
1- we can identify ports for Jabber in CUCM, then create ACL and apply QoS.in that Case what " Normal Traffic " means?
2- for MSI, do we need to configure anything on the switch port to work peoperly?
3- How switch knows which Qos to apply based on what MSI saying? still needs an ACL, if yes, what s apoint of using MSI dfor Qos?
    Thanks,
    Hamed

This would be EF for voice, AF41 for video/voice, and CS3 for SIP signal. Two things typically cause this to get treated as best effort:
The Windows PC is not allowing the application to set DSCP markings. Group or local security policy can be used to allow this
The switch is not trusting the data VLAN. Most SRND material suggests using a policer to limit the amount of EF/AF41/CS3 traffic from the data VLAN and to remark the violation traffic to best effort.
You'll want to start with the MediaNet Deployment Guide. There is a lot going on to make this work.
The MSI tells the switch what application and ports are being used. The switch then sets the DSCP marking on that traffic.

  • Why does the local network and computer name keep changing?

After upgrading to Yosemit the local network name and computername on my iMAC keep changes link:
    Mycomputer-1
    Mycomputer-2
    Mycomputer-3
    Why?
I have tried to change it back in sharing and network locations.
Is this also the reason the my iPhone cannot find my iPhone often cannot find my iMac when I will sync it? Then I have to restart the iPhone and iTunes on the computer. This happens very very often.
Maybe it also linked to these errors which the log is full of - many every minute:
19/10/14 12.11.09,522 discoveryd[53]: Basic DNSResolver  dropping message because it doesn't match the one sent Port:0 MsgID:256

I think the is some bug/clash between bonjour and other network protocols. That is only a guess.

After resetting the computer name and local host name to the correct name without the number I also shotdown my iMac, my AppleTV, my iPhone, my iPad and then rebooted my Airport/Time capsule it seemed to work at least for several days. But yesterday I discovered that my Apple TV now also has changed name to Apple TV (2).
I logged into iCloud.com to see my devices and here it was really wired. My Apple TV was called Apple TV (2) and my iMac also had (2) after the name. Then I checked it on the iMac but here it was correct! Why can it have one name on the iCloud and another on the computer.
I restarted both the iMac, Apple TV and Airport Time capsule then everything was correct also on iCloud.com.
But today the iMac was called the name (2) again on the iMac. And now the local host name also had -2 after the name. It has not always been both names that has changed. That is really wired. And today Wifi was not working on the iMac after wake from sleep. I changed the name back and rebooted again also the Airport Time capsule. Now it is working again.
The log is still full of this messages:

The name is not the only problem. Often itunes will not find my iPhone and iPad. Then i need to close iTunes and restart the iPhone and iPad then it works for some time.
And the iPhone and AppleTV will not always wake the iMac from sleep. I am wondering if the is linked to the changing of name.
I have seen by googling that it can be related to a sleep proxy problem so it seems like that here is two devices on the net with the same name that is why name is changing, but to know this do not help me to solve the problem. I have also seen all the suggestion to turn almost every services off on the computer, but again I it is not a solution and I have the iMac and devises to use the functionality not to shot everything down. So I do not really understand people saying turn off itunes, turn off blueboth, and turn off this and that.
Apple must soon come with a real solution. We are really many people have these problem since we upgraded to Yosemite and iOS 8.
I have also listed some of the iTunes errors from the log below:

  • I bought a new laptop with Windows 7. My computer name in Windows has changed, and now, my Ipad can't find Itunes

I bought a new laptop with Windows 7. My computer name in Windows has changed, and now, my Ipad can't find Itunes, and Itunes can't find my Ipad. [email protected]

Ok, if reinstalling iTunes as suggested above does not resolve the issue of iTunes recognising the iPad then try this -
Firstly, make sure that your device is not hidden (left hand pane). If it just reads device then toggle between SHOW and HIDE.
Secondly, try all the other ports on your computer, even a number of times.
Thirdly, make sure your lead /connections are no faulty.
Fourthly, if you have another computer try plugging your device into it without taking any action, give it a moment, remove it and try it back in your other computer again.
Failing all that, see here - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538
And failing all that put the device into Recovery mode. See here and note the paragraph 'If you restore from a different computer.... ' down near the bottom of the page -
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipad/assistant/itunes/
As for making your new laptop your 'home computer' follow these instructions -
    1. Without connecting your iPad to your computer -
    A) Install iTunes / make sure the latest version of iTunes is installed.
    B) Go to the Store tab and click on "Authorise This Computer".
    C) Go to Edit, click on Preferences [iTunes and Preferences on Macs] and click on Devices. Put a check mark in the box next to "Prevent  iPods/iPhones/iPads from syncing automatically". Click OK and close iTunes.
    2.  Connect your iPad to your computer -
    A) Start iTunes (it will not start automatically because of the action at 1(C) above).
    B) Right click on your iPad under Devices in the left column. Select "Transfer purchases".
    C) When the transfer has completed, right click on your iPad again and select "Backup".
    D) When the backup has completed, left click on your iPad, click on the Apps tab, and put a check mark in the box next to "Sync Apps", and then click on "Apply" (bottom right).
    E) Unless you want to always do a manual sync (as I do), go back to Edit, Preferences [iTunes and Preferences on Macs] and uncheck the box next to "Prevent your iPod.....".
    F) Finally, on your iPad, check that everything is syncing properly. If not, go back to iTunes and check all settings.
NB You should not lose any apps. However, any 'purchased' missing apps can be downloaded again FOC. As with updates, this must be done with the Apple ID under which they were originally 'purchased'.
Also see here as to moving your music to your new computer -

  • Failed while creating virtual Ethernet switch. Failed to connect Ethernet switch port

    Hello Folks
I am completely stuck with the configuration of my virtual networks. I have one logical switch left to add to one of my Hyper-V 2012 R2 hosts when I started getting the error below when I try to add logical switches to either Hyper-V Host. I have been using
the document. 'Hybrid Cloud with NVGRE (Cloud OS)' to implement the virtual networking. Basically using the exact configuration that is in the document. I have added the PA Logical Network and the Network adapters and added the logical switch for it to my
hyper-v 2012 R2 host and everything was fine. I am now trying to add my ISCSI Logical Switch to the host and this is the error I get. My other Hyper-V host I get this error for any logical switch I am trying to add. Can someone help me with this error. I haven't
been able to find any information about it.
Also a some quick info on tracing an error like this so I can figure out what is causing it.
Thsi is my configuration so far
So as far as I know everything is peachy untill the error below. Dead stop now
    Error (12700)

notice your GUID?  you may want to consider ensuring that is the same GUID associated in your database.  Sometimes during data corruption theres a smidge of a chance your sql database kind of either pulls old guids esp if this was reverted to snapshot
without it being powered off etc.
I would try that first.  then i would consider if you get to configure that with your current liscense associated with the host.  I would need way more info to help any further

  • Error connecting, tap to retry, it sees my WiFi and computer name but can't connect

Hi all, I am trying to get Edge Inspect to work on my Windows 7 PC (it did work for me a few times when I had it installed as Shadow when it initally came out)
I have read through various forum posts. I am also running Mcafee Virusscan/Firewall.
In Google Chrome I have the extension installed at the little "In" symbol top right, when I click it it says Adobe Edge Inspect "On", please start the Adobe Edge Inspect Application.
I open up the lastest version of Edge Inspect (v1.0.393) on either my iPhone or iPad, it shows the name of my WiFi router and shows the name of the computer that is running Google Chrome, it looks like it is searching for a connection (shows spinner) and then it says "Error connecting, tap to retry".
I have opened up port 7682 in my Mcafee Firewall
I have shutdown all open programs
I have tried manually entering in the computer IP address via manual connect
I have updated chrome extension and ios apps to latest version
I have tried reinstalling chrome extension
I have tried at Windows Command prompt "netstat -ano" it doesnt show port 7682 being used, until I open up Google Chrome, then it shows MYCOMPUTER:7682 SYN_SENT, which I checked the PID against and yes it is Google Chrome using 7682
    Any help would be great

Hi again Mark, still no luck here.
I also have a Mac in my network so I thought I'd try installing to that to see what would happen, I just installed Adobe Edge Inspect extension onto Google Chrome on that machine and restarted the iOS apps on both iPad and iPhone and they actually didnt see the Mac machine at all, still just shows the PC computer.
Also did I mention on my iPad I can still see the last time the connection actually worked (when it was called Adobe shadow, on my iPad underneath MYCOMPUTERNAME Error Connecting, tap to retry it has MYCOMPUTERNAME Last Used 24/07/12 8:59PM). Wouldnt have anything to do with a conflict with the old Adobe Shadow or anything would it, I'm pretty sure Adobe Shadow got uninstalled by default anyway, just a thought.
So I'm not sure if it can be a problem with the Router because nothing has changed with the router since the last time it successfully worked when it was Shadow? I did add the Mac machine to the network since this time, but that machine hasnt been on when I have been doing any of this testing anyway.
Also in the Edge Inspect in the Chrome browser I do not see any deviced listed, but back on the iOS App I do see the Wifi network and Computer name as discussed, so does this mean its an inbound connection issue or?
Also sent you router settings via private message etc.

  • Changing the Computer name with ARD

Hello, I am new to mac but I am now in charge of running a mac network or machines for an art department. I see that with ARD you cna change the computer name. If you change the computer name does it just change anything on the client machine? I just want to change the name in my All computers name so its easier to identify each users machine.

There are four User-fields that you can enter information into with ARD. What I've done in the past is put the primary user of a computer into one of those fields. That way the user doesn't appear in the machine name, but I can still easily access this information.
Note that if these computers are also in a Workgroup Manager group, that WGM will just change the name back on you. You would need to rename the computer through Workgroup Manager for this name change to take affect.

  • Web Service Client using computer name instead of IP

    Hi,
I've built a small EJB web service with a JAVA application deployed via JAVA Web Start for the client.
I testing the application on our LAN and it worked perfectly on one machine. I tested it on another machine and I get an erro along the lines of:
    HTTP Transport Error java.net.UnknownHostException: Ian
"ian" being the computer name of the server machine hosting the EJB we service. I presume the program worked on the first machine as it new which computer on the LAN was "ian", whereas the second machine didnt'.
The applications were built in NetBeans and the only place i can see the "ian" address being used is in the client WSDL file:
      <service name="VOQAOnline">
        <port binding="tns:VOQAOnlineSEIBinding" name="VOQAOnlineSEIPort">
          <soap:address location="http://ian:8080/VOQAOnline-EJBModule/VOQAOnline"/>
        </port>
</service>Netbeans seems determined to keep this address using the computer name, even if i delete the web service refernce add it again using the server ip address. I've also tried editing the WSDL file in the client JAR post compile, however the error still occurs, so maybe the problem is somewhere else?
The App server I am using is JBoss 4.0.3. Maybe there is a configuration on the server i need to do?
Eventually I plan to deploy the client app over the Internet, so using the computer name is clearly insufficient and it needs to use the IP. It's really annoying how it works on some machines on the network but not others. Any ideas on how to solve this?

You can associate a Virtual Host to the loopback IP address 127.0.0.1 read about Virtual Hosts here: http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-6.0-doc/virtual-hosting-howto.html
But with the above configuration alone you can access your app via http://somedomainname.com only on your local machine, no one else on the internet will see it.

  • IOS 8.1 Mesages/Text Message Forwarding - Duplicate Computer names

I just upgraded to iOS 8.1 on my iPhone 6.  On my IPhone, when enabling Text Message Forwarding to my devices I noticed that my Mac's (15" MacBook Pro 5.1 Late 2008 with Yosemite) computer name appeared there twice. As expected, only one of the two duplicate computer names was successfully activated (switched to green) for text message forwarding,
I had recently changed/edited the Computer Name of my Mac in System Preferences/Sharing panel.  The duplicate names that appear in Text Message Forwarding is the previous/old name and the existing name of my Mac described above.
Is there a way to delete the old name from appearing in Text Message Forwarding by changing something on my Mac, such as editing or deleting a plist?
Thanks in advance for any constructive assistance, comments or suggestions that can help me fix this.

    Problem solved!
I changed my iCloud password and the duplicate device names (ghost devices) disappeared from Settings/Messages/Text Message Forwarding on my iPhone.
I hope this helps somebody with a similar issue.

  • Changing host computer name

When I first set-up my iPad3, the computer [windows] I used was named "eyore1.  I recently changed computers [Windows]; the new computer is named "eyore"  My ipad will not sync.  It seems to be waiting until it's connected to "eyore1".  How can I change the setings in the iPad to reflect the new pc computer host name?

    Hello.
Using DHCP you may really have problems changing the hostname.
The fact is: The DNS server may assign your machine a host name which has nothing to do with the host name you sent to the DHCP server. Depending on the server (typically DHCP and DNS server are the same machine) nothing will really work. (This is the case with my configuration where the servers are located on a DSL router.)
I solved the problem the following way:
    * I created two host names (MyMachine and MyMachineNet) in the /etc/hosts file (Solaris 10 and newer: /etc/inet/ipnodes must be changed, too.)
    * "MyMachine" is 127.0.0.1 (localhost):
    127.0.0.1 localhost MyMachine
192.168.178.100 MyMachineNet* I assigned the name "MyMachineNet" to the network interface in /etc/hostname.networkcard.
    * I use DHCP
The computer name (in /etc/nodename) is "MyMachine". Some programs (e.g. Gnome !) establish a TCP/IP connection to "MyMachine" instead of "localhost" (I do not understand why). These programs are now satisfied because the host name "MyMachine" represents 127.0.0.1 (localhost).
I know that there is a switch that tells Solaris to take the machine name from DHCP/DNS instead of /etc/nodename. Unfortunately I forgot where it is.

  • 802.1X Authentication issues when moving between switch ports

    Hi Guys,
We are having some issues at our office where when users move from one switch to another, the 802.1X authentication does not want to take place. The PC just gets an APIPA address. Now I have read about features that MAC Move and MAC replace but they seem to be used when moving from one port a switch to another port on that same switch. Will MAC move help for issues between switches? And should I focus my attention on the switch's configuration or have a look at the NPS server that might be blocking that authentication as the user is already authenticated?
My configuration we have on the switch ports look as follows:
    authentication host-mode multi-domain
    authentication order dot1x mab
    authentication priority dot1x mab
    authentication port-control auto
    dot1x pae authenticator
    Your help is greatly appreciated.
    Grant

    Hi Neno,
Thanks for the reply. We are using NPS on a Server 2008 R2 virtual machine. The switches are stacked 2960S-48FPS-L running 15.0(2)SE. I will quickly do the debugs and get back to you.
    Here is the config:

  • How do I change the computer name of my iPhone?

In Mac OS X, we can go to System Preferences / Sharing, and set our Computer Name. Is there something like this for the iPhone? I'd like to rename mine to something more customized (and identifiable) for when it displays on a home network.

With iphone connected to itunes, double click on the name and change it - just like changing the name of a playlist.

  • Computer name keeps getting (2) appended to it.

I've searched high and low and can't seem to figure out why my iMac thinks the computer name is already being used on the network.
I can see in the sharing preference pane that the original name is what is indicated with this copy:
Computers on your local network can access your computer at: XXXXX.local
However, the name in the field above it has XXXXX (2) and each time I try to get rid of the (2) I get the message:
The name of your computer “XXXXX” is already in use on this network. The name has been changed to “XXXXX (2)”
I can change the name using the EDIT button to anything else I want, and it doesn't add the (2). But once I change it back to my desired computer name, I get the same message that it's already being used.
I've tried turning off all of my sharing services but that still doesn't seem to allow the name to be used.
Any idea what other process is running that can be using the name? How do I figure out where the conflict is occurring?

Thanks for the suggestion, Alberto. I turned all networking off and was able to make the change successfully. However, once I turned networking back on again, the same message popped up:
The name of your computer “XXXXX” is already in use on this network. The name has been changed to “XXXXX (2)”
In the Sharing Preference Pane, I verified that it appears to still be using the correct .local name:
Computers on your local network can access your computer at: XXXXX.local
But the Computer Name in the field above the message switched to XXXXX (2) again.

  • Computer Name With Number

I was a beta tester of Yosemite and recently updated to retail.  This happened while I was a beta tester and I thought it would go away, but it hasn't.  My computer name is being followed by a (#) that continues to increase for no reason (e.g. (1), (2), (3), etc.) - any ideas?

I'm having the same issue with my iMac (early 2008) and MacBook Pro (2010). It's very weird, both machines insist on appending numbers in parentheses to the end of the Computer name: in the Sharing preference panel. However the name  given beneath that in the message "Computers on your local network can access your computer at: <computer-name>.local" does not include the number, just the normal hostname.local. Also, using hostname command in terminal returns the regular <computer-name>.local without a number.
If I remove the (n) at the end of the Computer name: field it only lasts a few seconds before changing back to a number (though the number is not always the same as before, sometimes it goes to (2) or (3) rather than the (4) it was originally.
If I open a Finder window with the sidebar showing I see under Devices an entry for "<computer-name> (4)" and under Shared it shows:
    <computer-name>
    <computer-name> (2)
    <computer-name> (3)
I have screen and file sharing enabled, I tried switching them off and on again, I've tried rebooting, nothing seems to stop it appending the number and I can't get rid of the <computer-name> (2) and <computer-name> (3) entries under Shared either.
