IDVD crashes after startup screen

Hi,
I'm new on this forum and I'm not really good in English ... I hope it will not be a problem .
The issue I have is iDVD related: I've installed the app from the iLife 09 dvd on 10.6.1. No problem with the installation. I've done a software upgrade so I've now iDVD 7.0.4.
When I launch the app, I've the startup screen and I choose to create a new project. I select the name and validate that. After that nothing opens ...
If I ask to quit iDVD, the interface appears with the choice for saving project or not, or cancel and the app crashes. I have to force to quit and send the log to Apple.
I've tried to repair the authorizations, to delete the plist, to uninstall (with the apple app) and reinstall (from iLife 09 dvd and from the original DVD I received with the MacBook) but the same problem remains ...
The Quicktime version may be in cause? I only use Quicktime X ... maybe have I to install an older version?
I've no idea about solution for this problem.
My computer is a MacBook white end 2007 with 4 Go RAM. I've 30 Go free space on my hard disk.
Thanks in advance.
Jeff

Hi Jeff
And welcome to apple discussions. I don't know what to advise you on the latest version of QT X and iDvd. It's possible they don't play together nicely. However, I'm simply not that far updated on my own mac. And frankly, I'm in no hurry to do so after reading your post. I'll have to test drive QT X on an existing external firewire HD/ clone prior to updating my own system. That may take a while though since I'm in the middle of iDvd project.
So let's look at other things also that might be effecting your mac. You mentioned you currently have 30 GB's of remaining hard drive space on the boot volume. Is this correct? If so, I think this is borderline if not a bit low. Find a way to add more space to your main HD. This app needs lots of elbow room on your main HD (boot volume).
Try and clear 5-10's GB more.
Things to remove would be things like completed iMovie and iDvd project files. If you have a vast collection of photos & videos; burning them to dvd helps as does using Monolingual to clear languages other than English or the main language of your choice (if you can afford to do so). The latter will clear about 500 MB's from the main HD .....
http://www.jklstudios.com/misc/monolingual.html
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/freeingspace.html
Also, do you have any Non-standard / third party QT plug ins loaded to your mac currently (ie, Perian)? If so, we need to take a look at each one individually. Please list them here for our review.
Please also drag and drop the plist for iDvd to the trash followed by a complete Restart of your computer. Then Repair Permissions from apple's disc utility.
The plist for iDvd is located in your preferences folder and looks like this:
com.apple.iDvd.plist
Don't worry; iDvd will create a new fresh one when you relaunch it.
Btw, make sure to quit iDvd prior to disposing of the plist.
Good luck. And feel free to post back with your results.

  • IMac 24" OS X 10.5.8 crashes after startup

After startup, my iMac crashes after a short while (from 10 seconds up to 10 minutes). The screen freezes and the keyboard doesn't respond. I can't click, however, i can move the cursor around. This iMac was bought 2008 and I've never had any problems like this before, and I have no idea what made it behave this way. (I noticed it had crashed when I tried to wake it up from sleep mode a couple of days ago.)
Things I tried that didn't fix the problem:
    1. Shutting down and disconnecting power cord for 30 seconds
    2. Reseting PRAM
    3. Created a new login-account
    4. Repaired disc permissions in Disc Utilities
    5. Hardware test (holding "d" during startup)
(OBS. I've tried the extended hardware test several times but sooner or later it crashes, always before the test is finished!)
In Safe Mode (holding "shift" during startup) though, it doesn't crash, but then I can't have sound etc.
What kind of problem could this be? What should I do?

You mentioned running Apple Hardware Test however I'm guessing you may not have run in Extended Mode. If you did not then you really haven't tested it. When you start AHT look for Extended Mode and follow the instructions. This test will take significantly longer to do. My guess is  you have  temp sensor or HD problem.
Another thing you can do is run Activity Monitor when operating normally and look to see if you have any processes that are using a lot of %CPU, if you do that's a sign you have a problem process. You can also look for how much FREE RAM you have (it's under the System Memory tab) however being low on RAM would not cause a crash it would cause a slowdown.

  • Bizarre Crash After Startup problem

I have been having a very annoying problem with my PB for a while now that came to a head earlier today. All relevant software updates have been installed.
Recent changes: upgraded from 1 to 2GB of RAM.
Very shortly after startup (usually within a minute) the machine crashes. I have noticed 4 different presentations:
1). This is the most common. The screen will "blip" after which the computer no longer accepts any commands, though I can still move the cursor around. Most of the time, right after the screen blip, a tight row of small vertical multi-colored lines will appear somewhere on the screen.
    2) No screen "blip" but the comptuer still freezes. Usually this occurs after logging in but before the desktop fully loads, though sometimes this happens immediately after the desktop finishes loading. Usually I will not have cursor control after this.
    3) Screen blip, with cursor control, but the computer has crashed. Then the "beach Ball" appears for a few seconds, followed by the pointing hand cursor (when the hand should not appear).
    4) This is the rarest type of crash. The screen will blip, I will lose cursor control, then the screen slowly starts fading away to white (one horizontal line at a time).
The bizarre thing is that once I restart, only very rarely will it crash a second time. It will work perfectly and remain stable as long as I need it to. But once the computer has sat idle for abour 6 hours or more (typically overnight), it will be prone to a freeze again within a minute of being used. It does not matter whether it had been shut down completely, put into Sleep, or just left sitting idle.
I had initially thought that perhaps the problem was related to a recent RAM upgrade (though of course the problem didn't begin in earnest until AFTER the 14 day return period for the RAM had expired), but because of what happened earlier today, I no longer believe that to be the case.
Today I found it necessary to take the computer on the road with me. I had only planned on using it for a few minutes (I just needed to show someone reference photos for a project we were working on) so I didn't bother to bring the power adapter with me (plus I hadn't felt like crawling under my desk to retrieve it).
Once I got there, the comptuer crashed immediately (it had been asleep). But this time, instead of settling down after the first crash, it kept crashing. Reboot after reboot after reboot and I couldn't get more than about a minute out of it before it crashed again. I tried removing and reseating the RAM to no avail. I stubbornly kept trying though about 20 reboots. Finally, having lost my patience (and suppressing an urge to hurl the machine through a window) I left it where it was (in the care of a friend) drove home, got the power adapter and went back. I plugged it in, started it up, it crashed once, then settled down and was usable again.
Any ideas as to what might be causing this? I hope it isn't something that will require me to get a new machine. I use this one every day and can't afford to replace it right now. Thank you in advance.
EDIT: I haven't tried reinstalling the old RAM to see if that solves the problem, but based on what happened while on battery, I no longer believe it's a RAM related issue.

    Well, six weeks later.....
I did try reinstalling the original RAM. With the old RAM in place, the problem persists. If anything it's even worse now. Now the comptuer is susceptible to crashing at pretty much any time. It's getting to the point where it's almost unusable.
I'm not sure if it will help, but at one point I took a digital picture of the screen after a crash. This shows what is typical of the "type 1" crash. Since apparently images aren't allowed here, here's a direct link to the photo.

  • Illustrator/indesign and premire pro cc 2014 crashes after splash screen

Hi, I can't figure out whats going on, I had CC running fine, the 2014 updates came and all software except photoshop crash after the splash screen.  I have done everything I could think of.  Verified fonts, I've uninstalled and re-installed creative cloud and the software.  I ran adobe cleaner which get rid of the original CC software (I didn't want that to happen)  I've deleted preferences, ran disk permissions and repair. CS6 software install and runs.
I am lost to say the least as to why photoshop CC 2014 works and yet, the others crash.  Any Ideas?
    Thanks.

    Hi camdude,
Can you send the Adobe Illustrator CC 2014 crash logs to me at [email protected]
The steps to get the crash log are:
    1) Open the finder app.
    2) Press command +shift + g to open the "Go to the folder" dialog.
    3) In the text edit field type "~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports".
    4) This will take you the DiagnosticReports folder.
    5) Please share the latest crash log file from this folder.
    With Best Regards,

Photoshop CC can´t be started on Windows 7 Ultimate. The program is working quite Ok since i bought it but today it doesn´t start anymore. It crashes after the first popup screen with the message" "Photoshop coulnd´t be initialised due to a program error". A system re-start didn´t help. What to do next...as the error message is worthless for me as a user ?

Delete tthe OPM.db completely and sign in again, perhaps that makes CCApp recognise your credentials properly:

  • IPhoto 5.04 crashing after startup

I've had the worst luck with iPhoto in the last year.
6 months ago iPhoto wouldn't load the pictures. Had to do the whole reimporting of my entire photo library. This obviously increased my photo count since it counts edited images as another image.
Then it happened again a month ago. I had backed the various important files up on an external drive 2 weeks prior when I last used iPhoto, but I had to use that drive for something else and hadn't gotten around to backing it up. So I had to re-import everything... again. This time my photo count almost doubled with all the doubles I hadn't fixed. It was at 11,000 photos last I remember.
When all was done, I started going through everything and spent many many hours deleting over a thousand, maybe 2000, of those doubles, triples and quadrupled photos.
And then MacOS X crashed one day. I get these horrible crashed where the screen dims and the text comes up. No idea what's causing it, I dont have the time to deal with it.
Anyway, so I restart and relaunch iPhoto. No luck. It does the "loading photos" beachball and then the beachball goes away and it begins to draw the library background area... and then it crashes.
I'm at a lost. I've deleted the PLIST file, I've done the CMD-OPT launch, I've checked EVERYTHING.... rebuild thumbnails, library, etc. Nothing.
I've reinstalled iPhoto from iLife. Nothing.
Why doesn't APPLE have a serious troubleshooting section into fixing these HUGE amount of iPhoto problems? This is a product we're PAYING for.
If anybody has a good serious approach from A to Z in getting this stuff back, I'd appreciate it.
    Thanks
G5 1.8GHz (old version)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   1.5 GB RAM, 25GB free space on hard drive

Thanks, Mr Toad! Actually seemed to be a permissions problem somewhere in the library. Fixed by doing a GetInfo on iPhoto Library and forcing permissions on everything contained therein. I think perhaps another user had done something in the library after opening iPhoto with the opt key and changing to this library. Still have to sort that out. (Trying to somewhat share libraries among users.) Was able to get a default new library finally by blowing away the old library and all the users' preferences (saved off of course). So not quite as weird as the version problem created by Pacifist. Thanks for that link, tho, very interesting and a good note to hang onto.

  • Most applications are crashing after startup!

Using 10.5.7 on a Mac Mini purchased last December (so not current generation, last generation).
Suddenly last night, most applications are crashing right after they go through their startup process.
    -Cocktail
-Firefox (reinstalled latest version last night)
    -iChat
-Safari is working but has crashed after being used for a little while.
-Disk Utility is working (and I've checked disc permissions and repaired them)
-Time Machine stalls on "preparing backup" but does not crash.
I tried deleting preferences for Firefox and iChat - didn't help. Reinstalled Firefox. Didn't help.
Tried the 10.5.7 combo update. Didn't help.
Haven't tried anything else cause I'm getting tired of all the crashing!

Try the steps outlined in the following post. Although it was written for Mac OS X 10.4, it's still valid for 10.5...

  • APE  crashes after welcome screen

My Adobe Premiere Elements 12 crashes as soon as I try to open a new project.  Here is the error message.
Unhandled exception at 0x08A98B6 (dvacore.dll) in Adobe Premiere
    Elements.exe 0xC00000FD: Stack overflow (parameters: 0x00000001,
    0x16C83FE0).

    Okay I'll try to clarify.
I opened my Adobe Creative Cloud and there was a message for me.  I can't remember exactly what it said but it indicated there was a service package for me to download (it said bug fixes in small font below the title).  It was not labled Premiere Elements exactly but did have the word "Pro" somewhere in the name.  I assumed I was supposed to download it so I did and it took 20 or 30 minutes to download and install.
I've been trying to run this program for over a week now and every time I try to run it it crashes after a few seconds.  So I cannot use the Add Media/Files and Folders/Project Assets because the program never opens, it just crashes so I never even see the menu options or the timeline.
I read somewhere in the forum that there is a bug in dvacore.dll that sometimes puts a double slash "//" in the default path which causes it to crash.  I thought perhaps if I loaded a file from a path other than the default path that I could get around this bug which is why I tried opening the raw video file using the "Open With" route.  When I did Premiere Elements opened properly and I was able to view the video as the cursor moved along the timeline so I assumed everything was working.  I even opened a new project which opened properly even though this had never worked before.
But now I it is crashing again whenever I try to open my previous project or start a new project or if I use the "Open With" menu options.
    Please help.

  • Mail 4.2 crashes after startup

Mail 4.2 has started to crash after each launch. The app opens, goes to get mail from 4 accounts and then the crash log appears. Is this a delete plist issue? If so, which one(s), please?

    Hi Mik:
Is this a delete plist issue?
Maybe. However, try rebuilding the mailbox(s) first.
If that does not work, the preference file would be com.apple.mail.plist - located in your home folder (~library>preferences). Be sure to archive your mailboxes or back up first (Time Machine or some other method).

Is there hope out there that I will be able to finally run the app on my mac?

After the release of the Intel Processors on Macs, Apple provided a "Crossgrade" program for Final Cut Studio and Final Cut Pro users. This Crossgrade was a paid upgrade, $50 for FCS users, $99 for FCP users, and $199 for other Pro App users. This Crossgrade brought the version of Final Cut Pro from 5.0.4 to 5.1. This also included Motion, Compressor, Soundtrack Pro, and DVD Studio Pro.
This program lasted over a year and was even extended a few times, but was discontinued right before the release of Final Cut Studio 2. In order to properly utilize the Intel Processor, you will need a "Universal" version of Motion. Version 2.1 is no longer available through Apple. The only version you can now purchase via Apple is 3.0, which is only available as a bundle with Final Cut Studio 2.
However, since you own a previous version of Final Cut Studio, you don't need to pay the full retail price for Final Cut Studio 2. There are "upgrades" available at a reduced price. See the Apple Store for more information.

  • IDVD crash after rendering for 1 movie

I created several DVD so far it was perfect. I am using the same method and format or codec that I was using for all previous movies. This one seems perfect within iDVD but when I try to burn disk image it quits unexpectedly after rendering the project. All the files are stored onto an external firewire HD like the other movies. At this point I have rebuilt the movie from scratch, rebuild the iDVD project from scratch and I don't know where to go anymore. This is what I have in the log file:
    Exception Type: EXCBADACCESS (SIGSEGV)
    Exception Codes: KERNINVALIDADDRESS at 0x000000001e73f014
    Crashed Thread: 29
    Could anyone please help

What worked for me was to copy the iDVD project + assets to the local harddrive. Then it would sucesfully render (in the background) and was I able to save a disk image (on the firewire harddisk, because of lack of disk space!). So it seems FireWire related. Possibly a bug that will be fixed in the much anticipated OS X 10.5.3 update. I will do some more tests, with other harddisks, connecting with FW 400 and USB 2. Or Startup from a OS on the external FW drive.
I'm not surprised FW400 is slightly more stable but besides that it is always better to have your largest and faster HD as your primary boot volume since this is the drive that will do most of the rendering and encoding for iDvd and /or DVDSP.
I was trying to explain this on an earlier post to another forum member. Not sure if you happened to read it but the link is here:

  • IDVD crashes after burning a DVD

iDVD is crashing almost every time it completes a DVD. These are long DVD's, but the status screen tells me I'm at 3.9 out of 4GB, so it should be okay. Over 35 GB available on the hard drive.
I'm seeing this problem elsewhere on this board. Is anybody having this problem using a prior OS? Comments made indicate the problem may be specific to 10.4.3.
    I'm open to suggestions.

Try using the Easter Egg workaround to burn a disc image which can then be burnt to a DVD-R using Disk Utility.
It is also called "Hurz and Pfurz", and is available as a free download from
    http://homepage.mac.com/geerlingguy/macsupport/mac_help/pages/0015-burn_idvdother.html
    iDVD5 has this built in.
I also suggest you get another free download Mac Sweeper which you will find on http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/Mac-Sweeper.shtml
Now I would recommend the following steps but first make sure there is about 20GB free on the internal HD then:
    1) Shut down/Restart without any applications running.
    2) Run Mac Sweeper carrying out all the optimize options including repair permissions and, under clean, empty caches.
    3) Launch iDVD and the project
    4) "Burn" a copy to disc to hard disc using the Easter Egg workaround.
    5) Go to bed and have a good night's sleep.
    6) When the run is finished (always for me 1 hour in less than 8 hours) examine the DVD image and play it using the DVD player in the applications folder
    7) If and when satisfied and burn a copy using Disc Utility, full instructions on
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42724
but you just use the second half to burn the DVD.
This approach means you can readily produce multiple copies. I have taken to burning the DVD without any other applications running as I think too much going on may cause bad spots on the disc.

  • Illustrator CS5 crashes after startup

    Illustrator CS5 (64Bit)
    Windows 7 64Bit
    on Notebook Dell m1530
Recently I have a critical problem with Illustrator CS5. Without any conscious actions, Illustrator crashes right after the splash screen. The application switches into the interface and then suddenly stops working without an error description. I did not change anything in the program. I'm assuming that the issue is related to the new update?
Please ADOBE help. I cannot start the program anymore
Tell we what informations you need and how I can get them.

If I'm starting the program in "Compatibility Mode" it runs. This seems like a workaround but not a real solution to the problem.
