IE 6 problem-main content pushed down

Hi,
I have viewed other folks' threads with similar problems, but
of course I can't find it in mine. :-( I am using Dreamweaver CS3.
I have two columns, and the main column's content gets pushed to
the middle of the page. Of course this is only in Explorer 6 &
5.5. I've been trying to get it to work on this page:
Sample
Page
It seems that it is probably something with the CSS since it
is with all pages. The CSS page is here:

Sheet Location
Thank you so much for helping me with this.
Cheers,
Janell

Hi,
Try cutting out the CC's (conditional comments) in the head
of your page
and replace them with this amended one, placing it directly
above the
closing </head>........
<!--[if IE 5]>
<style type="text/css">
/* place css box model fixes for IE 5* in this conditional
comment */
.twoColFixLt #sidebar1 { width: 230px; }
</style>
<![endif]-->
<!--[if IE]>
<style type="text/css">
/* place css fixes for all versions of IE in this conditional
comment */
.twoColFixLt #sidebar1 { padding-top: 30px; }
.twoColFixLt #mainContent { zoom: 1; width: 660px; float:
left; margin: 0;}
/* the above proprietary zoom property gives IE the hasLayout
it needs
to avoid several bugs */
</style>
<![endif]-->

  • Main content moves down in IE

    Ok, here’s a quick question. This layout works in all
    the browsers except IE 7 (I haven’t tried 6 or 5.5). In IE 7
    it displays the main content below the sidebar floated to the
    right. I tried ‘clear’ on both the sidebar and main
    content. The conditional comments seem to work but, don’t
    seem to quite fix the problem and I’m not sure if
    that’s it or if they’re set up correctly.
    I know I’m missing something probably easy. Any help
    would be appreciated.

  • 3-column css "push down" problem

    I'm using a 3-column nav css design for my site (take a look
    at rjkg.com/GS.html), but the center and right columns are being
    pushed down in IE. Here's the css (navbar is left, headlines is
    right, and content is center):
    #navBar{
    float: left;
    width: 20%;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 0px;
    background-color: #ffddbb;
    border-right: 1px solid #cccccc;
    border-bottom: 1px solid #cccccc;
    #headlines{
    float:right;
    width: 20%;
    border-left: 1px solid #cccccc;
    border-bottom: 1px solid #cccccc;
    padding-right: 10px;
    background-color: #ffddbb;
    background: #ffddbb;
    #content{
    float: left;
    width: 499px;
    margin-top: 0px;
    margin-right: 0px;
    margin-left: 0px;
    What do I do to make it showcorrectly in IE?
    Also, in Firefox, the center column isn't actually centered
    between the two sidebars, but I'd like it to be. Any clues?
    Thanks in advance from this newbie!

    20% + 20% + 499px = ?
    You can't mix measures like that. Try replacing 499 with 60%.
    Your float
    will now drop in all browsers. Why?
    20% + 20% + 60% = 100%
    But the borders and padding you've assigned are added to the
    width,
    resulting in another mathematical improbablility. The easiest
    way to fix
    that is the remove the padding and borders from the main
    boxes and then
    nest content boxes inside the main boxes. Assign your borders
    and
    padding to those nested elements.

  • Main content text does not scale down on iPhone

    Hello my Dreamweaver friends,
    I'm working on a site for a friend -- a simple fixed width layout (header, footer, sidebar and main content). It looks good on Safari and Firefox. But on the iPhone and iTouch the text in the mainContent area does not scale down to size with the <h> tags and the links on the Spry navigation bar. Is there a reason for that? Is there something I could do so that it all scales down?
    Another problem is that the right border I put on the Spry Navigation menu doesn't appear on my version of Internet Explorer.
    The link to the page, for what its worth, is http://www.daveharrison.info/tzs/index.html

  • Horizontal menu pushes main content downwards

    I created a website for my nonprofit with a spry horizontal menu inside the header.  I then created submenus for several of the tabs.  On one of the pages the submenus drop down into the main content space.  On all of the other pages, the submenus inexplicably push the main content downwards - as though they are expanding the header.  I have set the vertical size of the header in all cases at 175 pixels.  All of the spry menus use the same global style sheet and I've gone through them line by line and see no differences. The wrappers are the same when I click on the header.  Do you have any idea why a spry submenu might be pushing the header (that it is inside) downwards rather than just overlapping the main page the way most subheaders do?
    Thank you so much!

    Hiya, Karin,
    Nice to hear back from you.
    Without getting into the mishigas (don't know how to spell that...don't actually speak Yiddish)... of the templates, etc., here are a couple of fixes for the Events page (and any others you worked on the same way):
    There's a line up in the head (at least in my copy of your page) that looks like this: <%@LANGUAGE="JAVASCRIPT" CODEPAGE="65001"%> You can take that out, I would comment it out at least, like this: <!-- <%@LANGUAGE="JAVASCRIPT" CODEPAGE="65001"%> -->
    When you save the page, you should be getting a javascript error...a widget has been removed from the page, etc., etc....when I got the error, it took me to this code in the page, which should also be removed (notice that I commented it out). Leaving javascript in a page when the widget itself has been removed leads to errors (!):
    <!--var MenuBar2 = new Spry.Widget.MenuBar("MenuBar2", {imgRight:"../SUDAN/SpryAssets/SpryMenuBarRightHover.gif"});-->
    The thing that is pushing your submenus into your content (in Internet Explorer) is the lack of 'hacks' to make it work correctly in IE browsers. So, copy this code as is to the bottom of your SpryMenuBarHorizontal.css stylesheet:
    BROWSER HACKS: the hacks below should not be changed unless you are an expert
    /* HACK FOR IE: to make sure the sub menus show above form controls, we underlay each submenu with an iframe */
    ul.MenuBarHorizontal iframe
        position: absolute;
        z-index: 1010;
        filter:alpha(opacity:0.1);
    /* HACK FOR IE: to stabilize appearance of menu items; the slash in float is to keep IE 5.0 from parsing */
    @media screen, projection
        ul.MenuBarHorizontal li.MenuBarItemIE
            display: inline;
            f\loat: left;
            background: #FFF;
    By putting them at the bottom of your stylesheet, they will correct and override any styles that they need to fix...
    Regarding your trials and tribulations with templates (ttttt), I heartily sympathize. I actually love templates, myself, but it took a while to 'get into' them. Once you have them set up they're fine, but getting to know them well takes a little work. There are those on the Forums who believe in using Server-Side Includes, but I have not used them, and the non-profits I design for usually are not on servers that support PHP or SSI. So I have gotten to know templates reasonably well.
    It's too bad you have a hybrid running now of templated and untemplated pages; a templated site is ultimately much easier to maintain. But I trust you will get back to it. The difficulties you describe were probably not due to the templates, but to the lack of IE hacks (see code above that you will restore to the stylesheet).
    Please let me know if these measures work! I will send you a private message in addition to this response.
    Best wishes,
    Beth Marshall

  • IE Main Content Position Problem

    Hi,
    I just switched ISPs and perfected the new site under their accountsupport DNSs - working perfectly in every browser.  Last night I changed the DNS to their own addresses (NS1.ipower.com, and 2) and now, my main content on the home page is being pushed down under the left side bar - only in IE and only online.  It looks fine in all other browsers online and fine in the IE preview in Dreamweaver.
    Of course IE is the client's main server!  Help!!!  http://www.seminolefeed.com - thanks, ttt

  • Background displaying between main content and footer

    Hi guys, I have a bit of a strange one to ask, with a discrepancy between what I am seeing on my website (online), compared to viewing my pages in Dreamweaver.  OK, here goes.. online, the footer shows up fine, being directly underneath the main content (with nothing displaying between the footer and the main content) - however when I look at the same pages in Dreamweaver (CC), it shows a very large amount of the purplish background situated directly between the main content and the footer, and taking up an area around 4 times the height of the main content of the page (which basically makes the page 4 times bigger than it needs to be, in Dreamweaver).    I hope that description makes sense - so basically (as I scroll down the page in Dreamweaver), firstly I have the main content (taking up 20% of the total height of the page), then below that, the mystical blank area of background color (taking up  maybe around 79% of the total height), and then below that, right at the bottom, the footer (say, 1% of the total height).   Yet when I view the web pages online, the footer is sitting snugly below the main content, exactly where it is meant to be - which I guess is the important thing, but I am worried that Google will see the issue as some kind of page error, so I would prefer to fix it if I can.    Here is a typical page where the issue exists - http://www.mindtraining.net/dreamweaver/motivational-info/index.php  I have a feeling it might have something to do with the vertical blue strip I have on the right hand side of each page, as the only page where the issue doesn't exist is the homepage at http://www.mindtraining.net/dreamweaver - which doesn't have the blue strip.  Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.  Many thanks, Craig T

    Both links are going to the same page.  So they are identical.

    Google robots don't see CSS or JavaScript. They index sites based on your HTML content.

  • Making sidebar fill colors "scroll" with main content div

    Just when I think this newbie is getting the hang of Dreamweaver, something throws me a curve
    I have a three column fixed layout designed in Dreamweaver CS4 at the URL below. Each of the two sidebars - left and right - has a fill color. I would like those sidebar fill colors to "scroll" or "flow" down as the content of the middle, main content div expands. As it is, the fill color of the two sidebars stops when their content stops, even if the middle content continues.
    I'm guessing I'm overlooking something simple here. Can someone tell me how to accomplish this?
    Many thanks in advance.

    That is really ingenious! Many thanks for the lead. For anyone else who has this issue, while there are many links on Google, this is the first one I came across and it solved my problem.

    <p>A Trading System is an automatic implementation of a trading strategy through the use of entry and exit orders based on a set of predefined rules. One major reason trading systems have become so popular is the basic concept that automated systems trading is supposed to takes out the human emotion of trading. These  trading systems are also able to deploy complex strategies more easily and efficiently.The use of such trading systems has intensified with the continuous growth in the volume of trade worldwide.</p>
    <p>Computerized Systems Trading methods rely on one simple assumption, that  price trends may be discerned in the futures markets and speculative risk can be reduced utilizing such trading systems. These trading systems are able to calculate very large mathematical ideas within a very short period of time, thus supposedley giving the edge to the systems trader. </p>
    <p>I would like to point out that the by utilizing trading systems it is not the holy grail to trading. Though there are plenty of gurus on the internet that supposedy have found the secret with their trading systems and for a mere x amount of dollars you too can own or lease the their holy grail of trading. It is my intention just to make the buyer of these systems aware that utilizing trading systems is a viable option but is not without the same risk every trader assumes when speculating in the commodity markets.</p>
    <p>With that said systems trading has it's definite advantages for certain type's of traders and also has it's drawbacks. In this article I will address some of the advantages, disadvantages, system concepts and alternate recsources for system traders. We also invite you to share some of your insights about systems trading and how it may have helped or hindered you in your pursuit of profits in the marekts.</p>
    <h2>Advantages  of Systems Trading</h2>
    <p>The first advantage for systems trading is that once it is developed, tested and implemented the need for a trader to monitor the markets and implement the trades are no longer necessary. Computers become the trade executioner and manager. Therefore, a trader that does not have the ability to monitor the markets as do professional traders then a trading system might be a good way for this type of trader to participate in the markets.</p>
    <p>Another advantage of system trading is that it takes the emotion out of trading, which is often cited as one of the biggest problems traders encounter. By utilizing a trading system a commodity trader need not make any decisions, which in turn will make an automated trading system more consistent in it's entry and exit of trading strategies.</p>
    <p>And if you don't have the time or experience to develop your own trading system you could buy or lease a trading system. Some companies sell trading systems that they have created while other companies will give you the signals generated by their trading systems for a fee. You may also have a profitable manual trading strategy that can benefit from automation, but you lack the necessary programming skills. In this instance there are companies that will take your manual strategy and automate it. There are other companies that can audit your trading system or proposed trading system and suggest areas of improvement. which could substantially improve your bottom line results. There are definetley plenty of resources for traders looking at utilizing trading systems.</p>
    <h2>Disadvantages of Systems Trading</h2>
    <p>Trading Systems can be very complex and typically required a thorough understanding of technical analysis, order entry and risk management. Acquiring these skills can be time consuming and overwhlming for novice and intermediate commodity traders.</p>
    <p>Another reality of designing, building and testing a trading system is that it can be very time consuming. A non-professional trader who has other commitments may just not have the time required to develop the trading system and get it online functioning properly.</p>
    <p>Another disadvantage system traders encounter is that simulated results sometimes differ greatly from actual results and can be a major problem to implementing the trading system. The reason could be the accuracy of the data, slippage, transaction costs and or commissions. </p>
    <p> A commodity trader attempting to design and build a trading system may find themselves frustrated and overwhelmed with the process. Therefore, don't forget it sometimes a systems consultant can be worth the expense in helping get your trading system working properly.</p>
    <p>There is no fool proof trading system and there are many type of trading system to choose. There are systems that specialize in certain markets and or designed specifically for day trading or longer-term time frames. Each trading system will have unique characteristics in regard to money management, time in the market and whether it is part of a single or diversified portfolio.</p>
    <h2>Types of Trading Systems</h2>
    <p>Most trading systems are based upon technical analysis, which is what I will be focusing on. Trading systems are based on technical analysis such as; moving averages, relative strength indicators, chaos theory, fibonacci retracements just to name a few. They can be simple to very complex in how they generate trading signals and can be implemented in several markets or just one.</p>
    <p> There are thousands of trading systems that generally operate on one of three time frames or objectives. The times frames are typically intraday, intra-week or intra-month and long term. Each of these time frames can se a commodity trader implement a trend-following system, a  countertrend system or a breakout system.</p>
    <p>Each system strategy and time frame has advantages and disadvantages and the common denominator within all these systems is that they all are fully automated and do not require constant monitoring of the markets once deployed.</p>
    <p>A Trend-Following System is probably the most common method of system trading. In it's most basic form, this trading system simply watis for a significant price movement in one direction and then buys or sells the commodity in that direction. A trading system designed with this concept will utilze such trading models as a moving average crossover. </p>
    <p>A Countertrend system is basically the opposite of a trend-following system. The fundamental idea behind countertrend trading systems is to sell when markets are rallying and buy when markets are selling-off. A trading system designed with this basic concept will utilize differenct types of Oscillators that illustrate trend weakness or strength through mathematical calculationssuch as Stochastics or Relative Stregth Indicators.</p>
    <p>A Breakout Trading System is based on the theory that if a market establishes a new high or low, the price movement is most likely to continue in the direction of the breakout. An example of a simple breakout system would be if a previous high in a market  over a period of days, weeks or months was broken and a buy stop order was deployed would be an example of a very simple Breakout System.</p>
    <p>Just like anything in regard to trading there are no magic wands or super secret trading systems that will make you a millionare overnight. Trading is a game of calculated risks in the pursut of profit and the type of methodology you decide to employ whether it is a manual trading system you designed or an automated system designed for you it all comes down to your personal preference. </p>
    <h2>Systems Trading Design</h2>
    <p>In planning a trading system here are some basic principles that govern the construction of any trading system. A Trading System must be objective, easy to use and must give clear entry and exit signals. Furthermore a Trading System must produce winning trades while not only attempting to limit the risk per trade but also too keep the drawdowns to a minimum.</p>
    <p>These are the foundation blocks from which a trading system can be designed, contructed, tested and implemented, though they are not a guarantee of succeess. This artilce has given you a basic understanding of trading systems and the different types of trading systems that are deployed in the commodities market. • Header and footer must be static and main content must be dynamic

    Hello, i need to design a webpage such that
    1. Header and footer has some menus and when i click on menu, only main content should change.
    For example, if i have a gif image in header, it should not be reloaded everytime when i click on menu or submenu.
    I hope you understand my problem. I have header and footer and only content inside should change but not header and footer.
    header and footer must not reload everytime when i click any url or menu item.

    One of the way is using <FRAME> or <IFRAME> elements. Another modern way (probably recommended) is based on partial page updates with
    UpdatePanel control:

  • Where clause one query not being pushed down

    I am having a problem where I cannot get a certain "optional" parameter to be pushed down to a query. The parameter gets applied in memory after the result set is returned but not pushed down to the DB. The function is as follows:
    declare function getFoo($key as xs:string, $optinalInput as xs:string*) as element(b:bar)*
    for $foo in f:getFoo()
    where $key = $foo/key
    where not(exists($optinalInput)) or $foo/optional = $optinalInput<- does not get pushed down to the query
    return $foo
    If I make optinalInput an xs:string instead of xs:string * and the optional parameter will get pushed to the query. The problem is for this optional parameter I could get anywhere from 0-50 in the sequence. Seems like when the parameter is a sequence it doesn't get applied to the query. Is there any way around this?

    Mike,
    I understand the difference between * and ? and I was one of the people working on the "string-length not getting pushed" problem so I am very familiar with it. I tried you solution that you mentioned below and it still did not push the where clause to the query. I know I could achieve this with an ad-hoc query but I wanted to do a pure xquery implementation of this component because of the benefits it could have when interacting with other components in our ODSI project...such as SQL joining and potentially pushing additional where clause down from components that call this component. The only way I did get this to kind of work is to do this:
    return
    for $o in $optinalInput
    for $foo in f:getFoo()
    where $key = $foo/key
    where $o = $foo/optional
    return
    $foo
    for $count in 1
    where not(exists($optinalInput))
    for $foo in f:getFoo()
    where $key = $foo/key
    return
    $foo
    By putting the optional parameter into a FOR statement above the table call it guarantees that at least one will exists and that's why the optional parameter gets pushed properly to the DB with a parameterized query. The problem with this is that even though a parameterized query gets pushed it will call the SQL statement multiple times!...not good.
    Another solution that was suggested to me would be to create the number of sequences for each item in the sequence and treat each item as it's own. For example if you know that the schema limits the sequence from 0..50 then you could make 50 items and 50 where clauses....probably not an optimal solution either but it would achieve properly pushing the where clause tot he DB.
    For now I am satisfied with this optional parameter not being pushed to the DB because the performance was still good but it would be nice if there was a maintainable pure xquery solution to this problem.
    Thanks for the help it's always appreciated!

  • DW template - why is the main content div lower than the columns?

    I'm looking to use the DW template with 3 columns, a header and footer and have a couple of queries:
    There is a gap between the header div and the main content div which does not appear to be a margin or padding.  Why is the gap there?
    Is it possible to remove this gap and have the main content div flush against the header div (like the 2 side bar divs)?

    I don't have access to CS4 so cannot really determine what might be causing the gap.  My suspicion, however, is that it's an escaping margin that is pushing the two divs apart.  Try this - run a 1px solid border along the top of the main content div, e.g.,
    div.content {
         border-top:1px solid white;
    Does that gap go away with the border in place?  If so, then the top margin on the first child of that div is the culprit. The first child in that content div is usually an H1 tag.

  • Div's being pushed down in Safari

    Hi guys,
    I've built a website for a client. For some unknown reason the footer content gets pushed down on the friends page in Safari and IE - all of the other pages are fine though.
    Here's a link to the site
    Can anyone see why this could be happening - in FF everything is fine though.
    Thank you!
    SM

    On Win 7, Safari, IE9 and Firefox, all looks the same. I am not seeing anything different.

  • TOC tab pushing down master slide background

    Why is this happening? It only occurs on three new slides and it pushes down the master slide (background only, not content)

    I am using Captivate 7. Here are two screen shots; one that is displayed correctly and one that pushes the master slide down, but leaves the content in place.

  • Why is Site Slices pushed down when i add text?

    how come when i upload my site and when i add too much words
    it pulls the bottom away from the original layout. I can only fill
    the box half way of words and when i pass that it will move it
    down. Why does it do that?

    Probably because you may have used a graphics program to
    write your html
    code for you - did you? Or did you use layout mode in
    Dreamweaver? I can't
    see a link to the problem page... so I'm assuming. What
    happens when you
    have a rigid table layout for example, is that whenever you
    add text to a
    cell, that cell expands and the adjoining cells will push
    your original
    design out the window.... this may help:

    You may need to look at using nested
    tables.......
