IE files downloading as .fdf instead of .pdf

I have a user where I work that is downloading insurance quotes from an IE browser. When downloading a home insurance quote, the file is attempting to download as a .fdf file instead of a .pdf. He doesn't have the same issue with the auto quotes. I have put in a ticket with the insurance web site, but wanted to see if I could get any ideas on the issue through here since these files should be opening in Acrobat 9 but can't due to the file type.
I know that .fdf files are used on a server application but this is a workstation. He's the only one in the department having the issue but it's not associated just with his profile on the PC. It's a Win7 64-bit OS. Any ideas?

Like the others say, it would really help if you provide a link to a file. It's also possible that your server isn't sending back the right Content-type header for the file. Here are example headers for a JPEG and a PNG:
HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Date: Fri, 29 Jan 2010 05:20:59 GMT
Server: Apache/2.0.50 (Fedora)
Last-Modified: Wed, 01 Jul 2009 20:44:56 GMT
ETag: "ab8014-9f3-fef24200"
Accept-Ranges: bytes
Content-Length: 2547
Content-Type: image/jpeg
HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Date: Fri, 29 Jan 2010 05:21:51 GMT
Server: Apache/2.0.50 (Fedora)
Last-Modified: Wed, 20 May 2009 17:09:53 GMT
ETag: "9c4180-45cb-18885a40"
Accept-Ranges: bytes
Content-Length: 17867
Content-Type: image/png
But it's impossible to know without a link. Or, you can open up the Terminal application and use this command (customize the URL for your site, obviously):
curl -I http://sitename/path/to/mp3.mp3
That will return just the headers so you can see what the server thinks it's pushing out...

  • Safari download in xml instead of pdf

    Change the suffix back to .pdf, eliminating the .xml portion.

  • Files downloading as FLV instead of MP3

    I hope that I am writing this in the correct place. My files are all downloading into flv format even though it is stored on the website as MP3, I can see the file change from MP3 to mp3.flv when I click download, and this is annoying especially when trying to download alot of mp3 files. I looked into the SWF and FLV player that is installed and there is no options for downloaded files to be changed. If anyone is familiar with this I would greatly appreciate the input.
    Thanks

  • File downloads as an application instead of opening properly

    I have been experiencing a few problems with my macbook pro 2006
    The files download as applications instead of opening properly most of the time, these files are for school, such as word documents and powerpoint presentations, I usually download them from a website or e-mail, it always says it is an application and does not let me open it on the mac, so I go find a PC, but now something screwed up with the PC too, so I can't get any of my school assignments.
    My mac also will not allow me to put video from a sony hard drive camcorder, which is a pain because I have editing to do and PC programs are not as good as final cut pro.
    thanks for any help.

  • Firefox downloads file as .ASPX instead of .PDF

    Trying to download Monthly Statements from Merrill Lynch website. Firefox used to download them as .PDFs (and MS IE 8 still does). Now Firefox downloads an .ASPX instead. Or maybe not -- If I change the extension of the downloaded file to .PDF. it loads correctly in Acrobat Reader. Why does Firefox use the wrong extension??

  • How can I use Firefox to view a pdf in a local file? On the web pdf's open in Acrobat but in a local file (file:///C:/T10/drafts/adc3/adc3r04.pdf) Firefox displays raw text instead of launching Acrobat

    I am configured to open pdf's in Acrobat instead of Firefox. This works great on the web. I have a local mirror of a website on my local disk as well as a network disk. When I use my html file to attempt to open the pdf on the local disk (file:///C:/T10/drafts/adc3/adc3r04.pdf) it opens as text in Firefox - appears to be ASCII view of the binary contents of the pdf. When I use my html file on my network disk (http://tucgsa.ibm.com/~kdbutt/T10/drafts/adc3/adc3r04.pdf) everything works as it should.

    You can set the pdfjs.disabled pref to true on the <b>about:config</b> page to disable the build-in PDF viewer and use the Adobe Reader instead.

  • Error while opening PDF file downloaded  from database Blob column

    Hi All,
    I am working on jdev 11.1.1.4.0.
    In my use-case I am using filedownload Actionlistner on a link to get the PDF file stored in the database in blob field. These files are being uploaded from other use-case in adf only.
    After getting the dialog box to open/save/cancel for the PDF file when i click on open then i am getting an error *'Adobe Reader could not open 'abc.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type*
    or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly docoded)' for some files , and to my surprise I am able to open some files.
    When I open these PDF files separately from desktop I am able to view the content of each and every file in adobe reader.
    I dont know where the problem exactly lies , while uploading/downloading the file . Any ideas/thoughts to resolve this issue?
    Thanks
    Kanika

    Thanks a lot Timo...!!!
    I checked the PDF file downloaded directly from the blob column in DB, there only it is corrupted so must be the problem in uploading the file. I am checking the code line by line,, but no problem in setting the file content type,size etc.
    Here is the code snippet ..
    byte[] buff;
    buff = new byte[(int)length]; -- Length is the file size
    int bytesRead = is.read(buff);
    for (int i = 0; bytesRead < buff.length; i++) {
    // int b = is.read();
    int b = is.read();
    if (b == -1)
    break;
    buff[i] = (byte)b;
    BlobDomain blobDomian = new BlobDomain((buff));
    TestVORow = (TestVORow Impl)TestVO.createRow();
    if(blobDomian != null) {
    TestVORow.setAttachment(blobDomian);
    am.getTransaction().commit();
    This seems to be Ok to me..the same issue, file is still corrupting.
    Any thoughts from your side ???
    Thanks
    Kanika
    The problem is resolved.
    Changes made are instead of
    InputStream is;
    used ... BufferedInputStream bis ;
    and after
    for (int i = 0; bytesRead < buff.length; i++) {
    // int b = bis.read();
    int b = bis.read();
    if (b == -1)
    break;
    buff[i] = (byte)b;
    bis.close(); // use this close bufferedInput Stream.
    Able to open each and every file now..Thanks for your suggestions Timo and Frank.

  • Weird characters displayed on page instead of file download/preview

    Hi everyone,
    I have a download file procedure as per the instructions on the download.oracle.com page
    The download of the files worked just fine (or better say they were previewed in a new page) but recently a new schema has been added to the workspace so we can start the testings from the scratch.
    I modified the schema name where needed, but not the download page acts kinda weird, as instead of the file preview, I get a long page full of:
    JFIF,,&ExifMM*bj(1r2i-'-'Adobe Photoshop CS3 Windows2008:07:28 16:41:20]&(.%HHJFIFHHAdobe_CM
    The issue is that if I switch back to the old schema, the result is the same. So, anyone has any idea of what can cause this?
    Thank you
    Regards
    Andrea

    PS: Some updates...I tried it in IE as well (I use FF when working with applications) and funny enough the photos and documents get displayed/the download box shows up.
    But, all the files have the name f. f.pdf, f.jpeg etc
    I tried calling the dl_image procedure in the url (currently I call a new page where I pass the file id to an application id and then I call the above procedure in a pl/sql block):
    http://www.host/pls/dad/schema.dl_file?p_fileid=1
    And the name seems ok. I don't think it's a good idea to put the procedure name in the link, is it?

  • PDF Report file download problem

    Hi,
    I am using ApEx 3.1 and Oracle 10g and XSL-FO
    I have a problem in downloading a PDF file:
    (1) I have a report query (produced an xml file), report template, and report layout.
    After I linked the new PDF report into my application, when I click on the button, the PDF “File Download” popup shows only two buttons (“save” and “cancel”) with a warning message “The file you are downloading cannot be opened by the default program. It is either corrupted or it has an incorrect file type. As a security precaution, it is recommended that you cancel the download”, and the file name shows up as “f.pdf”. I am able to open the saved file (f.pdf) in Adobe Acrobat and it looks fine.
    (2) In “Home>Application Builder>Application xxx >Shared Components>Report Queries>Edit Report Query”, when I click on the “Test Report” button, the “File Download” popup shows with all three buttons, (“open”, “save”, “cancel”) --- it shows the correct name of the file, and, no warning message! At this point, the file can be opened with the “open” button”, or, be saved to the disk. The saved file opens with Adobe Acrobat and the contents are identical to that of the file “f.pdf”.
    (3) I created another application (within the same workspace) with just one page, linked the PDF report in this application, and clicked on the button, and got the same response as in (2).
    It looks like I could try to create a new application by copying page by page from the application quoted in (1), and see if that would solve the problem. It is time consuming, the outcome is uncertain, and also could create some other problems
    What could be the cause of this problem? Any alternatives? I would appreciate any help.
    Thanks
    Vasan

    We experienced the exact same problem as the OP (including corrupt files named "f.pdf" and the browser dialog box he documented). Don't know if his environment is similar, but here is how we fixed our issue:
    Our app uses an Authentication Scheme that includes under "Page Session Management" a "Session Verify Function" called like this: "return timeout_pkg.check_timeout;". This timeout_pkg I think came from code originally posted here, it works well so thanks to the original coder. However it does present a small issue in that it rewrites the mime headers in the server response in one use case. Since it is rewriting the headers to "text/html" even though we are sending back a report where the mime header should be "application/pdf", the client gets confused and the result is the symptoms the OP posted.
    So if we change the timeout package and body so the signature is like this: "function check_timeout (p_request IN VARCHAR2 DEFAULT null) return boolean;"
    And change the call in the "Session Verify Function" to pass the request as a parameter like: "return timeout_pkg.check_timeout(:REQUEST);"
    And change the body of the timeout_pkg.check_timeout function to use the correct mime type when calling a report:
    elsif not g_cookie_already_sent then
    if (p_request is not null and INSTR(p_request, 'PRINT_REPORT') != 0) then
    owa_util.mime_header('application/pdf', FALSE);
    else
         owa_util.mime_header('text/html', FALSE);
         end if;
    then we solve our particular problem... I hope this saves somebody else some time, remember this was our specific solution to the exact symptoms documented by the OP, however as a general rule I would say if you are experiencing problems with pdf printing from Apex, watch out for anything your app might be doing with the owa_util pkg in particular and mime headers in the server response in general.

  • Just upgraded to Lion, can't open any pdf file downloaded from internet that was fine with Leopard. How can I overcome this obstacle ?

    Just upgraded to Lion, can't open any pdf file downloaded from the internet that was fine with Leopard before. I just got a black screen when I clicked on a pdf icon on a given internet site, and same happened with several sites that I visited. How can I overcome this obstacle ?

    Try two things with Safari not running:
    1) Launch Adobe Reader, open its preferences, select the Internet category, and check the values under "Display PDF in browser using".  If it's checked, try unchecking it.
    2) Look in /Library/Internet Plug-Ins (at the top-level of your boot volume) for something names AdobePDFViewer.plugin.  If you see such a file, try moving it to a folder named "Disabled Plug-Ins" (if such a folder exists) or onto the Desktop.
    Then see how things work.

  • Pdf files download with .file extension thus wont open as a pdf

    Hi , when I try to download a pdf document with Firefox, the file downloads but add a .file extension thus wont open as a pdf.
    I do not know if this is relevant but if you try to get the file to open with adobe viewer by telling the pc to open this type of file always with adobe viewer, nothing happens the tick box is greyed out, however if I double click the adobe viewer icon it will quite happily open the downloaded file as a pdf

    The next time you download, STOP, and double check the full name of the file.
    Firefox would not change the file name. But an add-on could.

    Please help me how to download content to a PDF file.
    Thanks,
    Archana.

    hi Archana,
    you will get the byte format of the pdf form the pdf source attribute , create  a resource using that byte data of type pdf as following
    IWDResource iwdResource = WDResourceFactory.createResource(wdcontext.currentContextElement().getPdfSource(), "resource name", WDWebResourceType.PDF);
    create a context element say fileresource of type iwdresource.
    set it's value as following.
        wdContext.currentContextElement().setFileResource(iwdResource);
    and do the following code on the action of the download button.
    public void downloadFile( )
