If I restore my iPod will I keep my songs?

I am planning on restoring my iPod touch 5g and I want to know if I can keep my songs. I did NOT buy these songs off of iTunes!

If you restore your device, you will lose everything you have stored on it, so you should make a backup. Also, in order to keep your songs, they should be stored in a PC or Mac with iTunes so, after restoring, you will be able to get them back to your device. If you haven't got the songs in iTunes in a PC or Mac, you can use different applications to do it. Read > https://discussions.apple.com/message/11319208#11319208

I have to restore my ipod, will it delete all of my data, if so how can I back it up??? My ipod won't let me delete any photos, or download any apps, so I turned it off and back on when the itunes and usb symboyl appeared I just download Itunes, and i can only restore it, Will it delete everything?!?!

Yes, you need to restore. Here is how:
Plug your iPod into a computer with iTunes
Go into your iPod's section on the bar on the left hand side of iTunes
    Click restore
Confirm the restore with the dialog boxes that pop up.
When it is done, if you have a recent backup of your iPod in iTunes, you can tell it to use it.

  • HT1212 if i restore my ipod will it erase my itunes library on my computer

if i restore my ipod will it erase my itunes library on my computer

No.  Your iTunes library is your "master copy."  Doing a Restore on the iPod just erases the iPod, like deleting a playlist.  Your iTunes library is not affected in any way.

  • HT4137 if i restore my ipod will i lose all of my pictures ?

If I restore my ipod will I lose all of my pictures ?

Yes, unless you create a backup of your iPod before you restore it via iTunes.  See here for what is included in the backup.
    iTunes: About iOS backups
And information on how to backup your device.
    iOS: How to back up
If these were synced photos, they won't be included in the backup that you can make via iTunes or iCloud, but since they originally were synced from your PC, they should still be there.

  • If you export for iPod, will it keep the chapter markers?

I downloaded a few movies from iTunes and I notice they have chapters to it. I I export a movie from FCP for iPod will it keep my chapters that Ive set in FCP?

It will, although I've found it to only work if I export directly from FCP via Compressor. If I export a reference movie and import that into Compressor, it won't retain the chapter markers.

  • Tried to restore my ipod 4 but keeps comming up with a 9 error

tried to restore my ipod 4 but keep getting #9 error what do i do?

Error 9: This error occurs when the device unexpectedly drops off the USB bus and communication stops. This can occur if the device is manually disconnected during the restore process. This issue can be resolved by performing USB isolation troubleshooting, using a different USB dock-connector cable, trying another USB port, restoring on another computer, or by eliminating conflicts from third-party security software.

  • I have a classic iPod with songs that were put on it from a different computer. If I plug it up to my computer, will it keep the songs that were originally on it from the previous computer AND allow me to put new songs on it from my computer?

I have a classic iPod with songs that were put on it from a different computer. If I plug it up to my computer, will it keep the songs that were originally on it from the previous computer AND allow me to put new songs on it from my computer?

No.  Your iPod is designed to sync with one computer/iTunes library at a time. If you try to sync it with a new computer/iTunes library, the contents currently on the iPod will be erased and replaced with content from the new library.  So you'll want to copy what is currently on the iPod over to your new iTunes library first before syncing it.
See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different methods and software available to assist you with the task of copying content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

  • Ipod will not update new songs from itunes

My ipod will not update new songs from itunes. I've purchased several songs from the music store, updated my playlists and as added some from my CD collection and they are not transfering from my library to my ipod.
I've tried numerous configurations under the preferences - ipod menue but still can't get them to transfer.
One error I occasionally get is "ipod cannot be updated because there is not enough free space to hold all of the songs in the itunes music library"
There is plenty of room on my ipod so I can't figure out why. It almost seems as if it is trying to copy all of my songs not just the new ones because all songs in my librbary are checked.

    Thank you for responding.
Doesn't it have to be on either manual or auto update? What other option is there?
I will try downloading latest updates.
I know it will work if I reset it (have done it a few times already). I just hate having to restore factory settings everytime I want to put a new song onthe ipod.

  • When I click on some songs in my itunes library it says the file is not detected.  If i hook up my ipod will i loose the songs already on it or will it retore the files to itunes?

Before to attach your ipod.... try to find the file where you put your music.... click on that song.... itunes will ask you if you want to locate it.... from there you have to find the song(s) that is one of the folders in your PC.

  • Windows XP Crashed - will I keep my songs?

I hope you can help. Our Windows XP crashed and it was reinstalled by the computer doctor. If I re-load ITunes and plug in my IPOD, will all of my songs come back or have I lost everything?

The content won't be transferred automatically, but you won't lose them if you're careful. Check out this post from Zevoneer for some iPod media recovery options:

This is why it's strongly recommended, even by iTunes itself, that you make backups of your content, in case of just such problems like this. I highly encourage you to make a backup of your iTunes library once you get everything transferred back from your iPod. If you have an external hard drive, backing up is easy. An iPod is not a reliable backup.
    Regards.

  • My 4th gen. ipod will not keep a charge, wont play music and keeps freezing-did full restore/updates already - please help!!

The ipod will charge and allow me to access it/touch screen still works. When you click on an ap it is very delayed accessing. Sometimes music takes a while to show up, other times it freezes altogether.
Started a few weeks ago after it sat in a hot vehicle (not in use) for a few hours and hasnt worked since!

If you still have problems after restoring the iPod to factory defaults/new iPod you very likely have a hardware problem.  Excessive heat will permenently degrade the batter.  I would make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • If i restore my ipod will i lose my messages and photos?

I'm restoring my ipod and i want to know if i will lose my imessages and all of my photos.

Yes unless you restore from backup.
For how to restore from backup see:
    iOS: How to back up
However, if the photos are on your computer you can sync them to the iPod.

  • If I restore my ipod will my game progress be lost

I need to restore my sons ipod, will his game progress be restored too or will it all be lost?

Not if you back it up, then restore the backup after restoring it.  The backup includes app data.  In the case of games, this normally includes game progress.
