IGetPreviewIconHandler - handling preview unavailable

There are cases when a preview is not available server side (in the DAM). What should be the approach in these cases in the IGetPreviewIconHandler implementation?
Our assumption is to throw a NotFoundException. This leads to the correct result in the UI (both the AD version panel and Bridge seem to handle it correctly). Throwing the exception however also results in an uncaught exception in the AD log, which indicates that the thrown NotFoundException is not properly handled.

  • Issues with iphone 5 and Lightroom 5.5  preview unavailable for this file

Hi, I've just started to use lightroom but it's been giving me a lot of issues.  I've downloaded all of my iphone 5 photos onto my desktop and I'm trying to import those files into Lightroom 5.5   However every single one of those files says "Preview unavailable for this file".  I've tried searching for answers but couldn't find a solution so easily.  Wondering if anyone can help?

I have images in iPhoto too (pocket camera/phone stuff) and have added some of them to my LR catalog.  In the LR import dialog the iphoto folder location should be:  macintosh HD/users/(your user name)/Pictures/iPhoto Library/originals from there you should see separate subfolders for each year.
Another test:  go to the iphoto library in the finder and copy(not move) some of the images that aren't behaving to your desktop and then try importing those to LR.
Hopefully your HD isn't corrupted or the files themselves corrupted.  I agree that you should use the format card option and not the delete all images when clearing images from CF or SD card in camera.
Did you see my post about purging your raw cache?  To do that go to the Lightroom drop down menu at the top next to the apple, select preferences (shortcut is command + ,), then go to the file handling tab, at the bottom you will see camera raw cache settings, click the button that says purge cache.
To render standard previews go to the application menu bar along the top, Library/Previews/ then there's the option to render standard previews, render 1:1's or discard 1:1's.  This step only deals with previews in the library module.  The purge raw cache option deals with the raw previews generated in the develop module.
If they were raw files I was going to suggest opening them up in bridge ACR or PS to check file integrity.  Like a second opinion.  You could download a trial version of the software from adobe.
You might also want to check the image's file info as well.  Locate the original raw file in your finder window, select a raw file giving you issues and hit command + i   if the file size is several mb that's good.  if the file is 0 or a few kb then you have a problem.

  • Can't Get Past Preview Unavailable for a PSD File

I know that Lightroom is unable to generate previews for PSD files if they haven't been saved with the Maximize Compatibility option. But, it seems that once you begin a preview for a folder Lightroom gets stuck in that mode even if you then go ahead and resave the file with the Maximize Compatibility option set to Always.
In a test just now I opened one of the problem files in Photoshop CS6 and saved it. Then I went back to Lightroom and tried to reimport the file but it still said Preview Unavailable. I tried toggling on/off a couple of layers and resaving but it still didn't help. So, next I actually tried making a change to the file and resaving. That still didn't work. I've tried exiting from the Import dialog in LR and restarting the import and even restarting Lightroom but nothing makes a difference.
If I save a new copy of the file in Photoshop (without changing any settings in my Photoshop preferences) Lightroom is able to show a preview and import the copy. So, the file itself is fine. In fact, it's just a simple 1MB file with a background layer and a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer.
I've found this same behavior with both LR 4 and LR 5 Beta.
I have a lot of PSD files that I've edited over the years in Photoshop. Now, I'm considering using Lightroom but if I have to create new copies of every one of my PSD files in order to see them in Lightroom I don't know if it's going to be worth the trouble. Is there any workaround?

TIFFs will hold everything that PSDs do.
That's nice to hear. However, I found that the Image Processor conversion doesn't work correctly in some cases. Here's one example. I have a file with a single image layer and which is a Smart Object. I applied a Blur Gallery Iris Blur to this object as a Smart Filter. After running the Image Processor what I got was a flattened file with no Smart Object and no blur filter. The filter effect was rasterized so it wasn't lost but the ability to edit further was.
And it gets worse. I have another file with a single Smart Object layer and a Nik Software Color Efex Pro filter applied. In this case, not only did it flatten the file, it didn't even render the effect correctly.
I played around with my preferences thinking that my Maximize Compatibility or TIFF layer-save options might be causing the problem. But, so far, I haven't been able to get the Image Processor to work correctly.
However, if I do the conversion manually I end up with a TIFF file that includes the Smart Object with Smart Filter intact. If I want to use these files with Lightroom I guess I'll have to convert each one manually.

The support for that camera was added in the very latest release of Lightroom, version 5.7.1. Having downloaded Camera Raw 8.7.1 will have no effect on Lightroom because Lightroom doesn't use the Camera Raw plug-in. You need to make sure you have updated Lightroom to the very latest release in order to have support for that camera.

  • 'Preview unavailable' on LR4 import, but not in LR3!

I get 'preview unavailable for this file' when attempting to import files from my Panasonic Lumix DMC LX3 - even though the same images show up fine on import preview for Lightroom 3!??
I have Lightroom 3 AND 4 on my machine at the minute, running OSX Lion on Mac, and if I have the same card in the same card reader - I see soem unimported file previews with 3, but not with 4!
What the hell - older version seems to work better than the new one!!
Any ideas / tips / suggestions much appreciated...

  • Preview Unavailable for this File?

Need some help on this one.  I want to upload a file to Lightroom 5 and it will not work.  The program opens the file but then says "Preview unavailable for this file".  Since I had no problem uploading other photos in this catalogue, I don't understand why Lightroom cannot find these particular photos.  I checked my backup hard drive and they are definitely there and I can open them in Canon preview program or even the Mac preview program with no problem.  Any help?

Sorry it took so long to respond Keith.  I used a Canon T3i at the time.  All other photo files easily uploaded to Lightroom from the same trip except for this one set of files.

  • Preview Unavailable for This File Message

Recently when shooting with 6D, I noticed that occasoinally images did not pop up on LCD.  Since I rarely chimp., I thought that images had merely closed down before I had checked. When I previewed images on ProSelect, all were there.   However, when checking in Lightroom, thumbnails were replaced with the 'Preview Unavailable' message above.  No luck opening with CS5 or Digital Photo Pro either.
I switched card, and shot about 50 more images (so far) with no problem.  What's worse is that client chose images which showed in ProSelect, but aren't opening anywhere else.
So far, it seems like this might be an individual card problem (Sandisk Extreme 32g 45 MB/S), since problem has not reappeared on a similar card.  I'm just wondering if this has happened to anyone else and/or if anyone thinks this may be a camera problem.  Problem did not occur (on same card) on multiple shoots - just started.
Thanks for your knowledge and advice.

    Fantastic!!!

I'm using LR5.7 on a Mac Mini running Mavericks and when I attempt to import a folder of new RAW photos from my external drive into my catalog instead of seeing a preview of each thumbnail photo I see the following message displayed: "Preview Unavailable for this file." If I highlight any other folder of photos the previews are all there. What is the likely reason for these previews being unavailable? JohnnyCam

What camera took these RAW photos?
Did you use any Nikon software to transfer the photos to your computer's hard disk?

  • Preview unavailable for this image

I have a Canon 7D and just purchased a 8gb Sandisk Compact Flash Card 60MB/s (UDMA) . I couldn't download the image from the camera to Lightroom and to be backed up on my hard drive (My Pictures) - message said - unkown error occured
When I downloaded images from camera to Zoom Browser this wouldn't work - message said - there are no images in the camera or memory card to match download conditions - images are on card as I can view them in camera.
I downloaded the images from my card reader ok to zoom browser however when I tried to import them into Lightroom it wouldn't work and a message came up where the image would normally show saying - preview unavailable for this image
    Hope someone can assist

You don't say what OS you're using. I think XP and Vista need an additional OS update/Raw viewer plugin to view the 7D in the OS, which is what Lightroom uses for the Import preview.

  • Preview unavailable for this file while trying to extract from canon 5d mark3?

I have lightroom 3.  Suddenly, I am unable to import photos off the SD card.  I am getting the message, "Preview unavailable for this file"  What happened and what can I do to fix?
    Thanks.

Why did it stop working all of the sudden.  I have had the 5dmk3 for almost a year and I have not had this problem with my current lightroom.  Are the DNG files lossy files? Can you work with them with out losing info?

  • Why do half of my images show as preview unavailable

Why do half of my images show as preview unavailable? One image is plain gray with nothing written on it

Yes, you have Lightroom through the Creative Cloud. However, in the forums, each community specializes in each separate app you have. There is a forum for the Creative Cloud app, another for the Lightroom app, and yet a different for Photoshop.
In the Adobe Creative Cloud forum, you might post a question about not being able to download another app through it, or maybe you're having trouble signing into it. In the Photoshop Lightroom forum, you might ask questions about not being able to import photos into the app or other Lightroom questions. In the Photoshop General Discussion, you might ask for help because a tool isn't working or an error message pops up. So on for all the Adobe apps.
    Hope this helps

  • LR 4.4 - Import - Nef File - preview unavailable for this file

Hello, using LR4.4 I get, for SOME (not all) NEF files, the following error message :  "Preview Unavailable for this file". Files are stored on a local hard drive. They could be "seen" with ViewNX, Capture NX. Don't understand.

I don’t own a Nikon so please don’t assume this reply is in any way authoritative but I have heard of corrupt NEF files recently and, purely coincidentally, I noticed that Phil Harvey (ExifTool creator) has developed a utility to fix them. • CS5.5 Handles Previews Better?

Is there any difference how CS5.0 and 5.5 handle render previews?  Is there any improvement?

I think they don't work at all.  I think the only thing they're good for is for buttery playback, but to use them in exports does absolutely NUTT'N, at least according to my testing detailed here: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/886122?tstart=0

  • Safari pdf handling - Preview?

Is it possible to set Safari to use a Preview plug-in to read pdf files? I can find the list of installed plug-ins (Help: Installed Plug-ins) but I can't see any way to edit them. I don't care if Preview opens the files within Safari, or if Preview just starts up and displays the pdf files in its own window.
At the moment, when I click a pdf file link within Safari, Safari doesn't know what to do because it can't find Adobe Acrobat Reader. (I recently un-installed Adobe Acrobat Reader because I got tired of Adobe's shenanigans.)
    Thanks!

My copy of Safari is behaving the same way following the installation of Adobe CS3...
...before the CS3 install I could click on PDFs within Safari and they would open with Preview. Now when I click on a PDF within Safari it won't open and I am asked to locate the PDF viewer application (I forget the exact language).
I am unable to choose preview by browsing through the dialog box so I'm stuck without a PDF viewer.
FWIW, there are no adobe plugins in my Library\Internet Plugins Folder
    and
Preview opens PDFs automatically from within the finder, just not from within Safari.
    -please help
