Unfortunately not.
At a pinch, you may be able to obtain a 30 day time limited Trial version of CS5.5 using this method

  • No Illustrator forum to ask questions?

    Hello
I am sorry to post this question here however, I have searched and searched for a forum where I can post questions about Adobe Illustrator. The only thing I have found is a place where I can read other peoples questions. I can type a question but below it says something like: You cannot create new documents. ????
I am a newbie to Ps and Ai (and other adobe products) and being able to come to these forums is a huge help and time saver.
So, does anyone at all know where I can post a question regarding Illustrator? I would more than appreciate your help with a link and/or any other information you may have about forums for Ai.
    Feeling rather befuddled.
    Hope you're having a wonderful day/night

    Hello
    thank you for your reply.
i don't know why but for whatever reason i couldn't get that page to come up.
    so, thanx a million

  • Illustrator CS6 beta GRID question.

Can someone who is beta-testing Illustrator CS6.. Does it yet allow you to change the grid to Thousandths?
I use Illustrator with CADtools plugin for architectural drafting.  I need to adopt a drawing to 1/8 (.125) or 3/8 (.375) scale.  As it is, CS5 can only change it to .12-.13, or .37-.38 respectively.  This throws off the scale of the floor plan.
    Thanks.
PS, I did put in a request when both CS4 and CS5 were out, so hopefully this was looked into.  With the increased power and features of Illustrator, allowing draftsman to use it as a CAD program would be very beneficial.

People might actually start complaining if they get to see the 14+ accurate decimals *everywhere*' as that is what Illustrator does its internal calculations with.
Actually, Illustrator's internal calculations are far worse than that, and it's a reason Illustrator doesn't show a lot of digits.
The main problem is that all coordinates in Illustrator are represented internally in the rather awkward units of 1/2048 of a point. While convenient from a binary standpoint (11 bits for the fraction), this value -- suppose we call it a 'zip' -- means that many values, both in points and in other units like mm, cannot be represented precisely.
Since there are 2048 zips in a point, and 72 points in an inch, there are 2048*72 = 147456 zips/inch. Values like 0.25in (36864 zips), 0.125in (18432 zips),and 0.0625in (9216 zips) can all be exactly represented. But something like 0.1in cannot, since it would be 14745.6 zips and the number of zips must be integral. The closest we can come is 14746 zips, or 0.10000271267in.
Millimeters are even worse, since even 1mm cannot be exactly represented in zips (1mm would be 5805.35433071 zips; we must be content with 5805 zips, or 0.999938965mm). 0.125mm (725.66929 zips) gets changed to 0.125056966mm (726 zips).
Generally the values in Illustrator are shown in the user interface rounded to three digits, so you don't notice the slight inaccuracies. They're still there, though. For example, draw a 0.125mm square and scale it to 10000% -- the resulting square will be 12.506mm, not 12.5mm.

  • Illustrator - After Effects Layers Question

Having problems importing Illustrator layers into After Effects.  I've tried all the recommendations from "release to layers" to "setting colors to rgb".  When I import into After Effects and select "composition - retain layer size".  AI layers are sub layers too.
I don't see the individual layers to animate.

Here is the pre- "release to layers" :
    Any ideas?

  • Illustrator to After Effects Question?

So I'm doing an animation and I have files drawn from Illustrator and I import them into After Effects. When I import them into AE I make sure to pick Compassion. Anyway the file should read each layer as "Layer 1, Layer 2, Layer 3" ect.... I had it named like Elith Arm, Right eyes, Left eyes, ect.... But when I import it the file reads all 32 layers but instead of the names it leaves it as ElithAvi.ai! Which is the actual file name. When showing the screen picture it shows the top AI image. Help? I'm really worried on this I keep seeing views but no replies! I'm freaked out.

When you import it as a composition and you open the original composition that imports, does it have them named correctly? Also, it might have something to do with how your Illustrator file is set up.

  • Illustrator CS3 - gradient function questions...

Ok...I'm trying to maintain my cool....this is Soooooo easy in CorelDraw.
I am simply trying to create a gradient in a vector shape in my file using samplings from two different colors that are currently in this same file.
I simply want to copy a color from my file onto the gradient color dot on the left of the gradient slider.... and copy/drag a second color from my document onto the second color dot of the gradient slider.
This works if you're using one of their gay pallets...but I can't seem to figure out how to take a sampling from within the file itself
Why is this such a chore?
    Is it possible?
Please describe in detail if you would so that my feeble mind can comprehend this.
    Thanks for your assistance.
    The Big Fish

Nevermind.... I figured it out. Talk about a retarded way of doing things. :-(
Another multi-step function that shouldn't be.

  • Illustrator CS5 Recolor Artwork question

I was passed down a file of a old logo from a friend in .ai format. He wants me to change the colors from Red to Blue. Seems pretty easy, but it has 2082 colors in it!!!
I am a fairly novice user and wondered if someone could help me with an easier way to accomplish this without losing the details of the gradients this logo has.
I have atteched a image of the Recolor Artwork screen in edit mode that shows the color wheel.
Is there any way to just rotate the entire wheel thus moving all colors at once?
What is the best way to accomplish this color change?
Thanks in advance for anyones help.

Click on the link-icon to connect all colors. Then move them together by dragging one of them. You might want to read in the manual (press F1). You might want to reduce the number of colors, which is also possbile with "Recolor art"

  • Illustrator CS6 Pattern Creation Question

PLeAsE, can anyone at Adobe (or anyone) say that the new Pattern Creation tool allows for use of symbols?  I use them all the time for repeats and are a HUGE help when it comes to changes.
Please, will Pattern Creation utilize this?  Just yes/no…
    Thanks!

I have no idea. In the mean time, have you thought of building your pattern as a symbol and draging the symbol to the swatch panel. The symbol will expand, but you can always updated it by editing your symbol and updating the pattern. I use this technique for editing brushes. It sure beats dragging the brush out each time it needs to be updated and I can use blends, which are automatically expanded when converted to a brush (since brushes don't accept gradients, at least in CS5).

  • Your Favorite FreeHand Features You Would Like To See In Illustrator

I am really curious to hear about the favorite features that Freehand users think would be important additions to Illustrator.
I would also be interested in hearing why you think this feature is better than the way Illustrator handles the same task, unless you the feature just doesn't exist in Illustrator.

Just found your question, Wade. Many thanks for asking since it is very encouraging to know that Adobe is aware of Freehand (FH) users' frustrations, beyond the usual learning curve challenge. Many CS3 Illustrator (AI) features are terrific and not available in FH, but the frustration of seeing FH's many intuitive options disappear from our desk top is difficult. I'd hardily amen the words of Ken Nielsen: ... 'incorporate EVERY feature possible from Freehand.' I am quickly improving my ability to exploit AI's advantages but still get frustrated that many of FH options are not available in AI. Here are a few and will try to add others later:
PAGE SIZE TOOL: I cannot change the page size with FH's page tool. To get a page size to fit new art work I have to guess and run the risk of something not being open and not adjusting if I move my work. This is important to keep the white border from appearing in exports, although I have found that making a Clipping Path can solve this. Why not have the FH option, however, of diagonally dragging the corner of the page and fit it the size of the page to the art work?
PEN TOOL DRAWING: The pen tool does not have an option that automatically makes beautifully curved lines (which always and exactly fit the complex map borders I draw), and simply by holding down Option in FH while clicking the pen tool (dragging out in AI is nice sometimes, but I had to buy a Big Wacom tablet to do what FH does naturally).
OPEN/CLOSED PATH: I always knew in FH if my path was 'closed' or 'open.' I know fill does not depend upon this in AI but in my work to know this is very important.
SWATCH BOX: In AI I have to remember the short cut or travel around my 30" screen to change between stroke and fill. In FH it was right in the color palette where it should be. As in the case of layers below, my choice of viewing swatches (small list) does not stick and I have to choose again every time I reopen AI. Have you thought of layers for swatches for those of us who have many?
GRAPHIC STYLES: I thought AI had a 'Redefine' option in the Graphic Style but can't find it. Since AI does not allow the editing of a graphic style in the Style palette, I have to make a new style and toss the old one. FH has both of the possibilities (redefine and editing).
PASTE INSIDE/CUT CONTENTS: Paste Inside, etc. was great in FH. I understand how it works in AI but to have the old FH option, and edit inside (hold down Option) were so easy.
LAYERS: AI's great layer/sub layer/sub layer organization is especially exciting for me since my 300-400 layers in FH can be nicely 'compacted.' This has vast potential and already I cannot live without it. However, you should demonstrate how good it is to new users rather than simply imply 'you'll get used to it.' I have tons of docs with tons of layers (maps and charts).
COMPRESS ALL SUBLAYERS NEEDED: I have my layers collapsed so that my palette is very easy to use, *but* when I close the doc and bring it up again they are all open again and I have to go through and close them. Make them 'stick' so they open the way we close them, and 2) put in a way to deal with sub layers so that we can make all of a certain set of sub layers visible/invisible or locked/unlocked without affecting other layers. Yes, I can drag my mouse down the list, but when I have 600 map city names in their individual sub layers that is a bit much.
A BIT OF TROUBLESHOOTING: A graphic style fill would not change (disappear) although fill color was nothing. I even use 'Break Link to Graphic Style' and tried again. Something is wrong since the stroke changes color if I choose it manually or via a style, but the fill remains the same (one of my styles = 50% red) although I change it many all or via the Graphic Style palette. Thus it appears the the fill is stuck in one mode, or rather two since it will change color or change to gradient, but it will not disappear and always default to the 50% red. I tried quitting the program and bringing it up again, and also rebooting. No change. Finally, after long hours I tried putting the graphic on a new layer and it was okay. Thus, it appears that something can be 'caught' on a layer, in this case the fill color, or rather the fact that I could not get rid of the fill color, no matter what it was. I do have 310 layers in THE doc, most as sub layers under main layers.
Must add that AI's Opacity, Layers, and other features are terrific. I finally have gotten over my reaction in the move from FH to AI, especially since CS3 version sped up the very slow CS2 version. Again, do everything you can to get all of FH features into AI. FH is a tremendous program which relatively few people knew of and exploited. If Adobe wants to create another real success story, follow Ken Nielsen's advice (as you are doing with your question, Wade.)

  • "Placing" linked PDF File in Illustrator for Markup Edits?

When I highlight text in a PDF file that is linked to an Illustrator file (PDF is "Placed" in the Illustrator file as a linked object), text highlights in the PDF file do not show up in Illustrator when I update the link.  Does anybody know why, or is there some setting or workaround to force the PDF markups to show up in Illustrator?
    Reason for Question
I often use Illustrator as a PDF editor because it is much more flexible than Acrobat's clunky editing tools.  There are some significant problems however.  If you open a PDF page in Illustrator, you lose some stuff like paragraph formatting, which Illustrator wants to left justify (same problem when opening an AutoCAD file in Illustrator).  You can also have trouble with missing fonts like Helvetica, which isn't a default system font because it is licensed and expensive.  Illustrator will swap the missing font out with a substitute so it can edit the text.  (Acrobat will do the same thing if you try to edit a font that isn't loaded in your system).
A workaround to maintain exact registration if I just want to mark up a PDF file (rather than changing the text) is to "Place" the PDF file in Illustrator.  When Placed, the file behaves like an object the isn't editable in Illustrator (you can edit a Placed object from Illustrator, but Illustrator will use the authoring application to do the edits, in this case, Acrobat).  I you are interested doing the same thing,... when I use Illustrator to mark up another file like PSD, JPG or PDF, I initially open the file in Illustrator to capture the dimensions, and then delete everything, and then "Place" the file back into Illustrator.  You can optionally link or embed the Placed object.  After Placing, I use the transform tool to move the Placed Object's upper left corner to 0,0 (XY Coordinates) to acquire registration, lock the layer, and do my markups on separate layers.
This procedure is a bit clunky and requires multiple construction files but Illustrator's vector tools are much better than the most of the markup tools (but not all) in Photoshop or Acrobat.  A Photoshop file will link to Illustrator, and you can export it back to Photoshop, but the Illustrator construction file will not be "linked" into Photoshop, so if you need to make changes with Illustrator you have a couple of options.  You can open the Illustrator smart object from Photoshop (Photoshop will launch Illustrator to do the edits), or you can delete the smart object and work on the Illustrator construction file directly and re-import.
Since you can't select the text of a Placed PDF file object in Illustrator to highlight text, I'd like to do some of the text highlighting in the linked Acrobat file upstream of Illustrator.  I should be able to bounce back and forth with both files open, the Illustrator construction file and the linked PDF file.  Problem is that when I add a highlight to the PDF file, it does not show up in the Illustrator placed object that is linked to the PDF file.
So back to my original question.  Does anybody know why PDF text highlights do not show up in Illustrator when the PDF file is placed as an object in Illustrator?  Is there a workaround to force the PDF text highlights to display in Illustrator?
FYI, I working on a business presentation and need to mark up a few pages of IRS publication 463, which is a 58 page PDF document with a bunch of "destination" links (10 to 20 links per page).  I can extract a page, do my markup edits, and then "replace" the page back into the original Acrobat file and all the links and bookmarks will still work, but registration is critical.
    I'm using CS6
Thanks in advance for your insight.

Mylenium, Thank you for your on-point explanation of why the markups don't import into Illustrator.  Based on your input, I did some digging and discovered:
I can export the Acrobat "Comments" (text highlights, but not markups?) to a FDF file
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/acrobat/pro/using/WS40A4853E-0D48-46a6-8AB6-6B9A27A22D83.html
and then optionally re-import them to another PDF, including a blank document (with the same dimensions to maintain registration) or the final output file.  I can then open the PDF (that contains the comments only) using Photoshop and save as a PSD file.  Photoshop captures the text highlight color graphic without the white background or text so I am able to achieve transparency.  I can then "Place" the Photoshop file as an object on its own layer in the Illustrator construction file as either an embed object or a linked object, but I tend to link for a number of workflow reasons.
Quite clunky, but it seems to maintain exact registration (although for some reason, whenever I place an object in either Illustrator or Photoshop I need to move (transform) the object corner to 0,0 because it is typically off by a pixel or 2).  Not sure if there is a way to also export PDF "Markups", but my objective was to use Acrobat's highlighting tools combined with Illustrator's vector graphic tools for markups, so even if I can only export the Acrobat text highlights and not the "Markups", I can still achieve my objective.
From a work flow perspective, I may optionally choose to use the text highlights only as a reference in the Illustrator construction file and turn them off when saving back to PDF.  I would then import the text highlights (FDF file) into the final PDF so they are actual Acrobat highlights rather than raster objects, but I do have the option.
I have also noted that I can print an Acrobat file to PDF to capture the text highlights, but that method introduces problems with registration and transparency (the white paper background).  I'll often print my final output to PDF rather than saving to achieve a small flat file that will render consistently on different computers, but in this case registration is important so it is better to save to PDF and live with the larger files size.
Why all the fuss?  Acrobat is good at highlighting text and Illustrator is good at drawing stuff like curvy paths with variable strokes.  Illustrator also has layers and stacking order control.  (Acrobat has clunky wannabe layers that are good for limited stuff like multiple versions, but not much help with graphic composition or stacking order).  I need workflows that can merge tools from multiple programs (Acrobat, Photoshop, Illustrator, Autocad, and Solidworks).  I could do my vector markups in Illustrator, then save to PDF and do the highlights in the final Acrobat file, but if I need to change the vector graphics later I would lose the highlights.  Doing the highlights in a separate PDF file and then exporting to a FDF file lets me make changes in Illustrator without having to recreate the highlights from scratch.
Thank you for your assistance.  If you have any additional suggestions I am always striving to improve my workflows.  btw, I've experimented with some of the 3rd party PDF editor's, but not the expensive ones (less than a few hundred dollars).  Most of them do a few things better than Acrobat, but they all have their shortcomings and I'm leery of investing my time in applications that might be obsolete in few years.  Perhaps this discussion is better suited to the Acrobat Forum, but I do a lot of PDF editing with Illustrator despite its limitations.

  • Problem with rotated canvas in Illustrator

I'm having a strange problem here. Friend of mine sent me a screen grab of her Illustrator workspace - it seems the artboard got rotated somehow. And she can't get it to straighten back... Neither can I, or any of our friends of designing persuasion... I wasn't even aware you can do that in Illustrator. Anyway, the question is, how do you undo this? All the new files start already rotated, too.
    Screen grab follows:

  • Using Quark/Photoshop/Illustrator

I am about to buy a MacBook Pro, but have a few questions about software I may need some help with. I know that until the relevant upgrades are available, everything will run a little more slowly than I would expect, but am assuming that I can at least use my existing software in the meantime.
    Quark
I currently have Quark 5 and intend to upgrade to 7. However, will I be able to install 5 OK in order to upgrade?
    Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator
I know I’m a dinosaur in this department but I don’t use them much so don’t need all-singing all-dancing right now. I have all the installer discs for Photoshop 5.5 and Illustrator 8 with upgrade discs to Photoshop 7 and Illustrator 10. Same question – will I be able actually to install these antediluvian versions in order to upgrade them with the upgrade discs? I will then upgrade the lot when Adobe bring out their compatible upgrades, but I understand that won’t be for a while yet. Any tips on when is best to install them as I have read that people have been having problems with installing them unless done somewhere near the beginning?
I was using all of this software on a G4 to which I no longer have access so will have to reinstall everything from scratch.
Any advice (eg. chuck the lot and buy new software, ha ha) would be gratefully received.
    Thanks

    Hi,
You old versions of your software are all Classic apps I believe, Quark 5, Photoshop 5.5 and Illustrator 8 so you will not be able to install them as the Intel Macs dont support Classic Environment.
I'm pretty sure you dont need to have them installed anyway for an upgrade to work. When installing your new software, youll just need to pop in the disk for the old software so the new software installer can scan it.
Otherwise, If you still have your old system. Make a backup of the Application folders in their current state to a CD, you can then use this for the new software to scan. This worked for me with an older copy of Photoshop anyway.
    Nick.

  • Can I upgrade from Illustrator CS3 to Cs5?

    Hi,
I have an older version CS3 pack education version; I am using illustrator and photoshop; my question is, can I upgrade illustrator and photoshop CS3 to CS5 or CS5.5 directly and skip the version CS4 in the middle?  Thanks.

Educational versions are not eligible for ANY upgrade. (Read the license) So, no.
If you had the commercial version you could skip CS4 and jump straight to CS5, yes.
Realize Adobe no longer sells anything prior to CS6, upgrade or otherwise.

    Hi all,
when openning the Info panel in adobe Illustrator it gives me question marks instead of numbers as shown in the image..in all cases and with all documents even when I use the measuring tool..
I'm having this problem with Illustrator CS4 and continues wit CS5 also..
the Info panel in photoshop works fine..
I tried to change the system locale for the non-unicode programs but no changes..
tried to search for a solution here and on google..found nothing about it
I would be so thankful for any ideas that can help me solve this problem
    Thanks in advance

    Mr.Mylenium
Tried it on another computer..I was Running it on my Dell notebook and tried it on a desktop which has an ATI graphics card and the VGA configuration says there's no secondary display...Unfortunately I'm having the same problem
By the way I'm using the Middle East version of Illustrator...can this be the cause of this problem??
Is there a file responsible for the Info Panel in Illustrator files??
forgot to mention that I'm using Illustrator CS4 and CS5 Middle East version running on Windows 7 Ultimate
