IMac 2 iMac.. dial-up & ARD

hey guys.
first post here so be gentle. I was a long-time PC user and switched to apple back in '04.. so i've got familiarity with both OS's. Unfortunately, my grandmother does not share this familiarity.. and i recently switched her over from xp to os x. She has constant questions and i'd just like to be able to take care of things myself. Thus my dilemma:
1. She uses dial-up because she lives in BFE and there is no high-speed.
2. She is an extreme newbie to OS X and cannot perform what seems like the simplest of tasks.
My question is this:
Since she is on dial-up, is there any way, if i installed an ARD client onto her system to remotely administer it if she has dial-up? If so, how do I go about doing this?
I've been lurking the forums for a minute now, and realize there are extremely knowledgeable and helpful people onboard, and I anticipate any and all input with much gratitude.
Thanks!!

Trying to access a system that's on a dial-up connection can be done, but it's going to be rather a headache. You would have to call your grandmother every time she connected and find out her IP address, which will almost certainly be different every time, before you could connect via ARD. It would perhaps be possible to set up a domain name and run it through one of the services such as DynDNS that can map a domain name to a changing IP address (a utility runs on the Mac that reports the new IP to DynDNS) so you could access the system via the domain name, but that's of course an expense as well as a setup issue (very doubtful your grandmother could handle it herself.
If you do want to go this route, it's still doubtful that ARD will be most cost-effective for you. Look into the freeware VNC. That will give you control capabilities and not cost you anything. You can find VNC applications for Mac here. Most people seem to find Chicken of the VNC works well for them. There are other system control apps as well that you could look into.

+However I think the Apple USB Modem, although more expensive, is a better choice.+
I agree, but Apple hasn't sold this for some time, so it is very difficult to find (if you can find it at all). And, I just did a quick Google search; the merchants who are still selling them (found on Amazon) are taking the "price it at whatever the market will bear" thing a bit far; it originally sold for $49 and some of these people are trying to hawk it for about $200.

  • Imacs go offline when they sleep

    Hi,
I have 11 intel imacs and use ARD to admin them but when they sleep they seem to sever the network connection resulting in a communication error when I try to remotely wake them. Also I wanted to look into the use of them as Logic Pro nodes for our main studio G5 but as they sleep the nodes get disconnected.
Anyone know how to disable the network sleep?

As mentioned, your network connection will be dropped when your Macs sleep. There are utilities out there like Wake550 that will allow you to wake your Macs over the network. I have never used it, but have heard good things about it.

  • Can't add computer in ARD 3.5.1 (461.1) because of "IP conflict"

    Hello guys!
We are running a DHCP network with ~250 computers and my problem is that I can't add/re-add new or newly installed Macs' to ARD because another added OFFLINE device is already listed with the same IP address.
What happens is that the "login window" where you have to give admin name and password pops up and immediately close itself again. It took me a while until I finally found out the above being the problem.
    For example:
imac-01 already added to ARD is offline and listed with the IP 10.22.0.18
imac-02 which I'm trying to add to ARD is online, ARD enabled and is currently using the IP 10.22.0.18
The only way to add imac-02 is to delete imac-01 from ARD to "free up" the IP address.
Any ideas how to solve this problem or how to "force" ARD to "release" the IP addresses?
    * problem occurs on both 10.6.8 and 10.7.2
    * ARD is a retail (unlimited) licence obviously updated to 3.5.1 via Software Update.
    * preferences deleted on various occasions throughout testing

Having ~250 hosts stuffed into a /24 subnet isn't going to work all that well.  If at all.  (You have room for 253 hosts, after all, counting the router, within a /24 block.  There are usually a few printers and other supporting widgets consuming some additional IP addresses, too.)
You will want to configure a larger subnet and a bigger pool of IP addresses in the DHCP server (eg: a /22 or a /20 subnet configuration, if your gear supports that), or will want to further segmentation within the network and park some hosts in one subnet, and some in the other.
If this 250-host configuration is all on a single or small number of WiFi connections, things get really interesting as this number of hosts can overrun the bandwidth of most low-end WiFi router configurations, too.
Shorter lifetimes for the DHCP address reuse won't work all that well here either, assuming this is a /24.

  • ARD doesn't show all computers after upgrading to Yosemite

Yesterday I upgraded my Air to Yosemite and after that I have issues with Apple Remote Desktop 3.7.2, the issue is that I can't see all the other Mac clients we have in the office, I have reinstalled ARD to see if that solved the issue but no.
I also upgraded one of our iMacs to Yosemite which also have ARD installed (3.7.2) and it is the same issue on that one, we can see some of the clients but not all.
But the thing is that the clients I missing in my Airs ARD I can see in the iMacs ARD and vice versa, but I can't find that iMac in my ARD and it can't find my Air.
We are connected to the same netowrk and the same accesspoint.
Everything worked fine when we runned Mavericks.

    Hallo,
I have exactly the same problem. After installing  (update) Yosemite on my (2013) iMac, the system doesn't properly shutdown anymore.
I have been waiting for hours, but nothing happens ... there is a black screen  and a rotating thing ... and the only option to physically shut it down is to hold the power button
    best regards,
    Jens

  • Extra Display with ARD

When I login to one of my clients (Powerbook G4) via ARD, it has two displays which show in ARD. They are not evident when the machine is being used as a standalone. This has the effect of hiding windows etc. I have partly solved it from a user perspective by mirroring but want to get rid of the extra display. Am trying to reset NVRAM etc, but need to do it from afar.
    Any other thoughts.
    Thanks

I just tried this with my 12" G4 Powerbook.
I set up a second display, and then controlled it using Remote Desktop on my iMac. While ARD was active, I removed the second display and noticed that the application windows I had on the second display did not move to the main display, and I could still move my mouse to the second monitor. The only way I could see the "phantom" display was via Screen Sharing or ARD.
Luckily, a simple reboot with the display disconnected seems to have resolved the issue (no resetting of NVRAM is necessary).
Going the other direction (ie, removing a display from the imac, which is running SnowLeopard), seemed to work fine. After I removed the second display the windows moved to the main display and ARD displayed the correct window.
    Hope this helps,
    -Tim

  • ARD client for iPhone & iPad

is there a ARD client for these either of these two devices to connect to my iMac?

Not ARD, exactly, but there are several VNC clients you can connect to your iMac with. The RealVNC app handles connections to 10.7+ machines better than other VNC apps, in my experience.

  • ARD through firewall

I want to access my imac at my work place from my macbook at home. When I type in the IP address of my imac in the ARD on my laptop, it shows that the status of my computer is offline. One of my friends suggests that I am behind the firewall in my workplace and I need to change the port to 3389 which is the port for windows remote desktop which is open in my network. Can you say how can I do this?

At the link below there is a clear example of opening and forwarding Ports in a Firewall
    http://www.starklmc.com/ard.htm
ARD uses 3283 and 5900 to Observe and to Control
Maybe that can lead you to a solution.

  • Adobe Design Standard CS3

    Hello all.
I have searched high and low and tried following many tutes and guides for the silent Adobe CS3 install. I persistently receive Error Codes with no explanation. I'm appealing to anyone on this forum if they can advise me of the correct procedure for getting Adobe CS3 installed using ARD.
Further I'd also like to role out Office 2004 using ARD for which I also can't find a decent guide to installing these programs.
Finally if anyone can let me know how I can get application icons on the Dock of our network users. Or wake up the macs if they've gone to sleep on their own. I can't seem to wake them using ARD. All computers are in the same 172.17.50.xx subnet.
Our setup is a Windows based network with our suite of iMacs authenticating against an active directory. I've setup local administrator users on all the iMacs to allow ARD with full privileges. I'm running the ARD server on my mac book pro.
    Please heeeeeeeeelp.

Thank you for responding dude. I'm gonna try this http://blog.irisink.com/?p=106 for my CS3 install. I will look for a guide on creating an Office 2004 package. I felt quite the fool after telling my boss Apple ARD will mean we can have a mixed OS college and will give me as much control over the Apples as the network manager has over the PCs. Then only to find the main apps that the art dept. need I can't roll out using ARD. It is heartening to know there is a way - just another skill for me to learn. Is it difficult to roll your own package ?
Can I just get away with copying the Office disk volume to the remote computers which is effectively what you do to install office ?
As a note for anyone else with Adobe silent install problems, there are many. Adobe won't help unless you've got a support contract. Their advice to me was well unless you spend x hundreds on a support contract you are able to install a machine at a time from the DVD so go away. I was most annoyed.
Power saving options are all set, I've solved this kind of by setting all the machines to power on at 0730 and the only thing that can sleep is the display after 30 mins, ie the computer sleeps Never. I might schedule a computer sleep at 1900 knowing it'll wake up the next day. Our network people don't like the macs so if I go asking for changes to the switches they will probably freak out
    Cheers for your help

  • Apple Remote Desktop not connecting

I have set up new iMac with OSX.8.3 and released the remote administration as I did before on many other devices.
In the Apple Remote Desktop window I can see the computer and it presents itself as any other computer also, to which I have access to (available, current user etc)
However, when I try to connect I get in the LAN immediately "connection failed".
From outside via VPN I get this message:
Please make sure that the remote administration (in System Preferences "Shares") is enabled on the computer to which you want to connect. Also make sure that your network connection is working correctly.
Here, after all, is an indication, albeit an improper. I can see the computer in the list of the ARD window and that it is available. But cannot connect either
I have tried with and without firewall, with no success. In addition, in the firewall the Remote Administration is enabled.
I am little perplexed. (With TeamViewer I can connect)

Thanks a lot for your help

is the computer on and awake when you try to connect?
    Yes it is
on the new imac, have you verified remote management is enabled?
Yes I did (the computer IS visible in the Remote Desktop list, I can see what app is running, which user account is active )
if no, have you tried enabling it? (apple menu, system preferences, show all, sharing, check remote management)
    its correctly done
If yes, have you tried unchecking it, and then re-checking it?
    Will try it
if still no, is the user your try to connect with listed in remote management?
Yes it is listed (however I checked the option for all user)
if so, what about deleting and then re-adding the user your try to connect with?
    Will try that
if no, what about adding the user to the list?
I was creating already a new user, no improvement
while connected to the same lan as the imac. Have you tried deleting the computer record for the imac from your ARD, and re-adding the client?
    Will try that
Is both computers connect to the network the same way? if so, what are the IP address you get on both computers?
yes they are. We have manual attributed IPs in the same range

  • Apple Remote Desktop via VPN

At my office I have an iMac 2013 with ARD client 3.7.1
At home I have an iMac 2013 with ARD 3.7.2
I would like to connect from my iMac at home to my office iMac via VPN (Cisco IPSec) and ARD.
According to my IT-department I'm behind the Firewall with a VPN connection, so they do not have to set any ports.
The connection to my office is made and I see my office iMac in the list (scanner).
Everything is also set right in system preferences and Remote Management is checked on my office iMac.
When I try to observe, curtain or control my office Imac it will not connect and after a while I get the message:
"Check if Screen Sharing is enabled". This is rather strange because with ARD Screen Sharing has to disabled.
When I try to send a file via ARD to my desktop on my office iMac, it is no problem and it arrive easily.
I also see what my current used program is, I can empty my trash bin, etc. etc. But cannot control, observe or curtain.
I also have a windows computer at my office and with same VPN connection and Microsoft Remote Desktop I can easily connect and control this computer from my Imac at home.
Is there anybody who could help me and have the solution so I can control/obersve/curtain my office iMac via VPN and ARD.
I'm searching for an answer on Internet for weeks now, but could not find a solution.

I've got the exact same problem.
I have tried to kickstart ARD on the 10.4.11 (Mac OS Server).
Finder gets the "shared computers" icon available and says I can connect to the server with Screen Sharing. But it fails to connect when trying.
Have checked for old Keychains (and recreated them).

  • Can I convert an old IMAC computer with OS 9 operating system from being "dial up" to high speed?

Can anyone tell me how I can convert my old IMAC from "dial up" to go on the internet as high speed? I have an ISP provider for a more modern computer that I own, but I really would like to use my old IMAC on the internet as well? How can I make it compatible with high speed internet? If I try to go on line, the internal modem "dials up". How can I change that and cause it to communicate with my external high speed modem?

Any iMac can connect by ethernet to the router.
You'll need to disable the modem and set up the network config.

  • New iMac and ARD 2

I just received my brand new iMac in my classroom. I used a copy of Remote Desktop that I had from my previous machine. I installed ARD 2 and now the computer will no longer boot up. I am stuck at a white (grayish) screen and can't do anything. Any advice?

Ok I am now able to start the machine but when I try to run Remote Desktop I get an error that tells me to run Software Update cause my software is out of date. I have done this but it finds no updates. Any ideas or is ARD 2 just not going to work for me?

  • Bizarre - iMac shows cog wheel and Apple Logo, ARD shows desktop

Here's a good one for you. I have two iMacs at home. One of them, a G5 iMac (iSight), had 10.5.1, all the updates, and no external drives or other 3rd party apps to screw things up. Ok, so I did the Apple Software Update to 10.5.2 there and after going through the install process and rebooting it is currently showing me the Apple logo with the cog wheel running. Now here's where the fun starts - on my other iMac that I downloaded the Combo update to and all is running well with 10.5.2 (24" Aluminum), running ARD, I can log into my desktop of the G5 iMac which looked normal (and I started to download the Leopard Graphics update). Then, I walked into the room and did a double-take and saw what I described above, the cog wheel going and the logo - yet on ARD it's the desktop.
Anyone else experience this? Any other admins out there with ARD?
I wouldn't believe it if I didn't see this for myself. I wanted to test both types of updaters to see what I may be getting myself into at work tomorrow with everyone else's machines.

    Hi bolisaf,
I'm having that same issue. It's annoying. It's seems to take forever, and unnecessary. When the desktop cames in the dock takes long time to show, sometimes...
Can i ask you how long your boot time is?
As you did not post anythong else, did you manage to work out a solution? Or there is not a solution for this?
    Thanks!
    Daniel
