IMac 24" 3.06Ghz (early 2009) 8gb ram upgrade causing kernel panic

When 2 x 4Gb ram modules are installed there is a kernel panic on startup, yet if I mix the old (2Gb) and the new (4Gb) in any slot/module combination to give me a total of 6Gb there is no problem.
It seems the machine is maxing out at 6Gb but Apple states 8Gb as max
New ram modules labeled: 4gb ddr3 pc3-8500 sodimm
System:OSX 7.1

Just found this:
4 GB SODIMMs will not work in most Macs. 4 GB SODIMMs are relatively expensive. The Macs in the chart above listing 6 GB maximums will take one 4 GB plus one 2 GB, but two 4 GB modules crash the machine as soon as the OS tried to access more than 4096 MB of memory. The exceptions are the Early 2009 iMacs (not education model) and the Early 2009 MacBook Pro (except 2.4GHz) which can each take two 4 GB SODIMMs for a maximum of 8GB and, to some extent, the Late 2007 MacBook and later and the Mid 2007 MacBook Pro and later which can take one 4GB SODIMM along with one 2GB SODIMM for a maximum of 6GB.
The above exceprt is from this website.
I wasn't aware that there was an "Education model" however I did buy it through the education store when I was in college, so perhaps this is why I am only able to get the 6 gig to work on my Early 2009.  I'd be interested to know if the other people in this thread having this issue also bought their iMacs from the education store.

  • Where is the cheapest place to buy 8gb ram upgrade for my early 2009 iMac?

Where is the cheapest place to buy 8gb ram upgrade for my early 2009 iMac, I have bought before but current upgrade is causing mac to crash randomly!? Need to know a place I can buy Ram which is confirmed to work my my mac model, the current upgrade is working but Mac is very unstable.

I meant more reasonable priced than apple
That'll be almost anywhere else then!
Yes, if it is made by Crucial and confirmed as suitable for your model of mac you will be fine. You can also buy direct from Crucial:

which is what I would do (did).

  • IMAC early 2009 2GB RAM, 2.66ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, Im currently running Snow LEopard 10.6

So I have an iMAC early 2009 2GB RAM, 2.66ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, Im currently running Snow LEopard 10.6 & I tried upgrading to Yosemite 10.10 today and right before it finishes it cancels download and says unable to download application "NSInternalInconsistentexception" ??? how do i fix this

Mavericks is no longer available from the App Store, so your choice is Yosemite. One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install the new OS, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won't have to go though the revert process.

  • Macbook Pro 17"  2.66(Early 2009 model) 8gb ram upgrade

    Hi,
I want to upgrade my early 2009 unibody macbook peo 17" 2.66 to 8gb ram.The problem is in my country they sell hi-level and team brands (2x4gb).The specs of this brands are almost same with apple compatible rams except pin number.I searched on the net and i saw that my machine has 204 pin ram,hi-level and team have 200 pin.My question is this deifference between the pin number may be a problem?
    Thanks.

I asked them but the answer was not satisfying. In Turkey peoaple like me(apple addicts) have major problems when we want to buy an apple product or apple related products. The reason is there is no Apple Turkey still. So we dont have the option to find the products which people can buy easily and much cheaper in Europe and Usa.
My nearest Apple Reseller told me that they can import the rams but the price will be nearly twice...For example in Istanbul we pay 2000$ for a 999$ macbook in USA.it is not fair but this is the situation. Our hope(Apple fans in Turkey) is to see Apple Turkey in the future.
    Thanks

  • 24" iMac (Primo 2009) strange RAM upgrade issue

I have a 24" iMac (Primo 2009) at work. I been granted a RAM upgrade by the IT department and have received 2 indentical 4 GB modules.
The 24" iMac (Primo 2009) uses 1066 MHz DDR3 modules and supports up to 8 GB RAM in 2 slots. I have purchased RAM from this source http://www.dustin.dk/product/5010642132/corsair-4gb-ddr3-1066mhz-1x4gb-so-dimm-i mac-macbook-macpro/#intcmp=searchProvider_SiteSeeker (Corsair Mac Memory so they SHOULD be fine.)
    Here's the issue:
I had 2x 2GB modules. I have taken both out.
I have inserted the new 2x 4GB modules but the machine refuses to boot. It gives off 3 beeps-interval-3 beeps-interval (repeats).
I took out one of the 4GB modules from slot B. It boots.
I inserted the one I removed in slot B again so we're back at 8GB. same beeps. No boot.
I switched the 2 4GB modules from slot A+B around. Now beep-interval-beep-interval (repeats) No boot.
I inserted one 4 GB in slot 1, and one of the old 2 GB in slot 2. It boots with 6GB RAM.
I inerted only the one that won't boot when in slot B in slot A, beep-interval-beep-interval (repeats) No boot.
OK - so logical deduction tells me one of the new 4GB RAM modules is defective. No matter what configuration, booting fails with that specific module inserted, though there are different beeps. I also know tha both slots work since the machine works with 6 GB RAM (2+4).
So I called Dustin, and since we're a big customer they sent a new moduel for free. But, I have the same isssue with the new module!! What are the chances I have recived 1 working and 2 defective modules? not big right? So my iMac seems fine with the old 2GB modules and one of the new 4 GB modules, but says no to the 2 other 4GB modules.
YES - I have tried resetting PRAM and SMC to no avail. Any clue?

Switched the 2 modules around, so there's now a 2GB in slot A and a 4 GB in slot B. Still works fine

  • White MB early 2009 and RAM - problems?

    Hello,
anyone has any experiences with RAM upgrades for the new NVidia white? I bought some 'quality' RAM (4 Gig kit, Mac memory, DDR2, 667MHz, PC2-5300, CL4) but they only cause trouble .... ran memtest 4.21 and lots of errors occur.
So, is that a problem with compatibility with the NVidia MacBook or are the sticks erratic?
Anyone having any experiences with Corsair Ram or comparable?
    thanks
    Steff

    Thanks for your reply ...
Your Macbook requires SO-DIMMs) of 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM, use ram that meets that spec and you'll be fine.>>
I had that ... 5300 DDR2, 667MHz, CL4 .... so it is not the whole thing .... On that site there is just the normal blahblah, nothing specific .... Bought that computer (decided for it), so I know the standard blahblah ....
I think that once you have some decent ram from a decent vendor that meets Apple's specs you'll not wish to go back to windows! >>
I have been a Mac user since I left the Atari ... so it would definitely not be 'going back to Windows' ....
dump the v4 beta. Use the current version 3.2.3 and I think you'll have no problems.>>
Maybe ... but if a beta software does not even work with the stuff of the developer ....
    thanks

  • Battery life diminished from 7Hs to 3Hs after a 4Gb- 8Gb RAM Upgrade. MacBook i5 Late 2011 Os 10.7.5

I upgraded RAM from 4Gb to 8Gb on a 3 months-old MacBook Pro. Before that, my battery used to last 6-7hs and now it hardly lasts 3.5Hs
I also noticed that the cooler almost never stops, and the computer feels HOT.
As a developer, I give the Mac an instensive use, runing an Oracle database within a Windows XP (I'm sorry) virtual machine with VMWare.
At the same time I run Oracle Reports and Oracle SQL Developer on the MAC side and TeamViewer to connect to my remote customers' servers.
Before upgrading RAM, the memory usage used to be 100% and the performance was poor. Now the performance is much better, the memory usage is around 75% but the battery is much weaker. Shouldn't be the other way around, as now the hard disk RAM pagination should be less?
Is that normal???? What can I do, other than going back to 4Gb and see what happens? Will it help if I upgrade to Mountain Lion?
    Thank you!!

I am worried I am having the exact same problem with my Early 2011 MacBook Pro. I purchased an SSD from Crucial as well as two 8GB RAM sticks, which upgraded my RAM from a total of 4 GB to a total of 16 GB. I swapped the drive and RAM when I received my order in late February. Now, just a couple of weeks later, I am experiencing issues. The fan seems to be running a lot more often, and yesterday my MacBook went haywire. I took some video of it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQrcv0iU3Ic I ran the apple hardware test (the basic one, not the extended one) and it did not find any issues. These are the things I purchased: CT5419725 CT512MX100SSD1.PK01 UPGRADE FOR A APPLE MACBOOK PRO (13-INCH, EARLY 2011) SYSTEMandCT3373717 CT2K8G3S1339M.000 UPGRADE FOR A APPLE MACBOOK PRO (13-INCH, EARLY 2011) SYSTEM If the 2011 MacBooks can't handle 16GB of RAM, I'd like to return it and do 8 instead. Before I purchased the RAM, I did some reading online, and it seemed that 16GB would be OK, but now I'm not so sure. kate

  • Macbook Pro 13" (Late 2010, 7,1) 8GB RAM upgrade, boot up error

    Dear all,
I am currently trying to update my brother's macbookpro7,1 13" to more current hardware with a new 128GB SSD and more RAM (he has 4GB). The SSD was installed successfully and runs perfectly fine, but when I installed the 8GB RAM into my brother's macbookpro7,1, it produces a black screen and a beep with 5 second pauses in between. I had looked up this error code and it indicates that the RAM cannot be found. This is where I am having difficulty understand, because I actually pulled the 8GB RAM from my other Macbook Pro 15" and it runs fine there. After noticing the error, I swapped back in the old RAM and both Macbook Pro's start up and run just fine. (Before I reinstalled the old RAMs to their respectively laptops though, I had attempted multiple solutions, like cleaning the RAM slots, reseating but to no avail, still black screen and beep.) The only difference I noticed on the RAMs are the 8GB are 1 Rank (1Rx8) and the 4GB is 2 Ranks (2Rx8) . Other than that, they are both DDR3 at 1066Mhz. Is the rank causing this problem? Please let me know, thanks!
    Regards,
    Jason

I'd suggest you look at the manufacturer info on the 8 gig modules, then check their website to see if it's compatible with the 13".

  • Thinkpad T500 **** 8GB ram Upgrade ****

I have Thinkpad T500 with 4gb, but if i add 8gb what kind of change to my laptop would it make?
And can i add a video card to it, i has a lot of space in middle right part of laptop.

also, i am proably going to bay it from Ebay , but the results for (search: thinkpad t500 8gb ram)  8gb ram come up with like 2 X 4GB, so i will have to put in two chips or its 2x4gb like 4gb for 2pc?
Generally something like "2x 4GB" means two modules of 4GB each for a total of 8GB. AFAIK the T500 has only two RAM slots so if you currently have 2x 2GB you'll need to replace them both with 4GB modules.
As for performance improvement that depends on what apps you run and how many of them you want to run at the same time. Windows Task Manager will give you insights on how you're utilizing the 4GB you now have.

    Hello,
I want to upgrade my laptop from 4GB RAM to 8GB RAM, but wether win7 64-bit nor a boot cd starts.
I see the Toshiba display and can get into Bios, which shows me 8GB RAM, but then comes only a black display with a cursor blinking...
    Bios is updatet.
    RAM chips are:
    Power Ram
    DDR3-1066 4GB
    204pin,ds, so-dimm CL 7-7-7, PC8500(256x8)
    Can you help me please?

    DDR3-1066 4GB

Is PowerRam the brand of these RAM modules?
If yes I never heard about this brand I dont think its high quality module
Can you test it with high quality modules from Kingston? Or from an authorized service provider they have pretested modules?

  • Macbook air 8GB Ram upgrade?

I am interested in Upgrading my macbook air 13" 2011 to 8GB ram. I know it's soldered to the mother-board or w.e, but if ill have to replace the motherboard to upgrade I will. Any options of doing so?

They may do that some point within the return window or as a "one-off" they will switch out a logic board with 2GB for one with 4GB and hold the 2GB in spare parts.
An 8GB logic board does not exist...at least not one that's available to you.  To upgrade to 8GB you would have to desolder the RAM chips and Serial Presence Detect (SPD) chip and resolder them in.  And then...MAYBE...if the RAM capacity passes as valid by the EFI.
They're Ball Grid Array (at least the RAM modules) and de-soldering and re-soldering is not possible to a home user...or even a repair shop.  You'd basically need a re-flow oven...and even then if you manage to upgrade the modules you'll just wreck the rest of the board anyway.
The only way it'll happen is if Apple makes a logic board with 8GB from the start.  They don't, so you can't.

  • 8GB Ram Upgrade

    Hi,
This is my first post and I am aware of similar posts all over the internet but due to the lack of recent posts for RAM upgrades, I would like to create this placeholder for all the people who are looking into upgrading their RAM on their recent MacBook Pros.
So after reading a bunch of posts online about RAM upgrades, the questions boil down to:
    1. Is the performance of RAM different for different makes?
    2. Does the power consumption and heat generation differ from make to make?
    3. How does the apple care warranty get affected if non-apple certified RAM is used?
    Various Vendors:
    1. Hynix (Claimed as the ones that ship from apple) -- $340
    http://macramdirect.com/macbook.html
    2. RamJet (Claims to be good on the battery/heat) -- $290
    http://www.ramjet.com/ItemDescription.asp?Item=MBAL8G
    3. Hyper Velocity (Claims to be apple certified) -- $280
    http://macramdirect.com/macbook.html
    4. OWC (Read a lot of great reviews) -- $230
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/8566DDR3S8GP/
    5. Crucial / Corsair / G Skill RAMs from newegg.com -- $265 / $220 / $200
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007609%2060000617 8%20600000401%20600000445&IsNodeId=1&name=DDR3%201066%20%28PC3%208500%29
It is hard for me to accept that all these chips would perform exactly the same way since there is always a cost to quality ratio. Although the cost is also based on a lot of other factors, the quality of products used should be the major factor of all of them.
Keeping in mind that I have the 3 yr. apple protection, I hesitate to upgrade to anything else other than the hynix chips but if it doesn't make a difference, shouldn't I go with G Skill since it is the cheapest one on the list and still has a lifetime warranty?
    Thanks for all the help.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
So after reading a bunch of posts online about RAM upgrades, the questions boil down to:
    1. Is the performance of RAM different for different makes?
No, as long as the RAM meets the specifications it's fine.
    2. Does the power consumption and heat generation differ from make to make?
No change in power consumption or heat by adding additional RAM.
    3. How does the apple care warranty get affected if non-apple certified RAM is used?
Replacing RAM and internal HD's on current MBP's does not affect AppleCare in any way UNLESS you do damage to the computer installing it. However if you follow the instructions in the manual it's difficult to damage your machine.

My recommendation is to use OWC's products. They provide high quality pre and post sales support and you can even watch an online video that shows how to install the RAM. They also specialize in Apple products and I think you will find most people on this forum agree that OWC stands behind their products.

In addition, after a few hours of not using my WD my Cloud was disconnected from my network.
Can anybody help me please?. I am in the time frame where I can return either the iMac or the WD my Cloud.
    Thanks.

A new iMac should not experience a kernel panic. Contact Apple's Support, formerly Apple Express Lane and let them deal with the problem. Do note, that, at least in the US, you can return any Mac the first 14 days w/o any questions asked.

  • New RAM stopped my Kernel Panics on a MacBook

I upgraded my Duo Core 1.83gHZ White MacBook to 2GB of RAM almost three years ago when purchased new.
Sometime after upgrading to Leopard I started having frequent kernel panics. I ran Memtest several times and it never found a problem. I blamed Leopard and/or the MacBook itself as the machine was very stable under Tiger.
About a month ago re-installed the MB's original 512MB of RAM and ran the machine for a few days without a single KP. Running a MB with 512MB or RAM is painful, so say the least...
I ordered two 1GB sticks from a well-known company and the MacBook has run kernel panic free ever since, about three weeks now.
Unfortunately the old RAM was not a lifetime warranty product. It cost me $176 back then. The new RAM was $30. :-O
I hope others can learn from my painful lesson. I guess my biggest surprise is that the RAM seemingly went bad at some point.

just had mine mended from apple
the said it was  logic board the next day started  again  what now
    and  what you think

  • IMac 27" with Wireless G network causes Kernel Panics

    I bought a 27" iMac Jan 8th 2010
    At home i'm running a Wireless G network through a linksys WRT54G V7.0 router
From day one i was running into Kermnel Panics several times a day
When i was provided a new machine the same thing happened
The machine has been away for repair for 2 weeks and nothing was found.
As soon as the machine was back home the Kernel Panics started again
A clean install has ben done, and when setting up the network for the build in airport, the machine died again in a kernel panic
After further discussions with apple repair they stated the the Kernel Panics were caused by the Wireless G network, and was advised to get myself a wireless N router
I got myself a wirelees N router (apple airport extreme), and no more Kernel Panics were seen
    Now the questions are :
Did anybody else ran into this issue ?
Is somebody have this same issue and also have a linksys router ?
Would anybody be able to explain why my Linksys WRT54g V7.0 router running Wireless G cuase the Kernel Panics on my machine ?
Ok quite a story, but hope to get some constructive answers.
    thnx
    Paul

I took home a 27" i5 iMac on 7th of Mar 2010 and immediately two days later i had my first kernel panic.
When i called Apple Support the next day i was led through a barrage of file deleting and the usual Disk Utilities Repair Disk actions. Two days later another kernel panic happened but this time the computer display remained blank. I brought it back to the department store where i purchased it and, they agreed to replace my unit (still within the store's seven days warranty).
Five days later my new unit arrives and the moment i turned on the wireless connectivity i had another kernel panic. I was ****** - NOT looking forward to carrying the 38lb computer back to the store again. Called Apple again and the guy had me reinstall OSX. One day later kernel panics still there.
Then i experimented by not turning on the wireless internet, for two days no kernel panics. The moment i did, a kernel panic would occurs, i got suspicious. That's when i stumbled on luupski's post (I'm real glad i found it). I also was using a linksys WRT54G router and getting the same kernel panics as everyone on this thread. Now that the root cause has been identified, i decided to save my SGD258 (apple airport express) and instead invested SGD18 in a Cat5e 20m ethernet cable. My mac now works perfectly apart from the lack of wireless network, which i can grudgingly bear.
Real glad to see genuine and useful posts in a forum like this. I will be giving a heads up to the Apple support guys, they seem to be totally oblivious about this issue. Its weird since the WRT54G seems to be quite popular here in Singapore.
    Thanks,
    simon
