IMac 24" Getting pinkish pixel auras/halos; s'up?

I have a 3 year old iMac 24" screen (OSX 10.6.8) and have lately gotten patterns of pinkish colored pixels in my images--desk top images especially with blues and pinks in them, but also in my photographic images in Lightroom, Photoshop etc. They move aound with brightness adjustments and are not permanently afixed to any set of pixels. Very disconcerting as I am a photographer, and color balance is crucial to my work. I've tried recalibrating with OSX software and aftermarket (Spyder by Datacolor) with no improvement. What can I do next?

So has no one experienced anything like this? Perhaps this is a unique situation? Or my display is "aging"? I've read here that a basic problem with iMacs all-in-one is heat distribution. That putting the heat producing computer into the same casing as the display causes eventual failure of the display. Anyone wish to comment on this?

    Maverick and Your System message
I've updated my Macbook Pro and my iMac with Maverick, updating the various apps (Pages, Aperture, iPhoto, Numbers & iMovie, too) in the process.
On my Macbook, everything functions perfectly. On my iMac, I get the Your System has Run out of Application Memory message. But it's not Calendar, it's Mail that not only won't open, but when it does now, it takes the entire system out with it.
I open Safari, and it works. I open Firefox, and it works and Safari still works. I open Calendar and it works, Safari and Firefox continue to work. I open Reminders, and everything still works.
I open Aperture, and it opens Finder instead, showing the 3.5 update that was installed two days ago (and Aperture has functioned), but doesn't seem to update the app; after about 20 seconds the update disappears and I can now open Aperture and it shows I'm now opening the updated Aperture, which it didn't show before.
I click on Mail, and the cursor spins for ten minutes. The mail window finally opens, but the cursor spins and does not connect to upload new mail, and I finally Force Quit Mail. Since the Maverick update, even though Mail was not updated (and maybe because Mail was not updated), I have been able to receive emails twice, and then the program crashed.
Besides the Aperture app, Pages didn't fully update on the iMac, and I had to remove the old Pages icon from the dock after the new program loaded up from Applications.
    Any ideas?

  • Why do I have to restart my iMac to get Safari or email?

    Problem description:

Do I remove, delete those items in red?  Adobe seems to be a problem.

  • Does the iMac G5 get too hot?

    Greetings to all.
I would like to start a thread about the iMac G5 and heat. I found a few old threads, but I would like to bring that topic up again.
I have a 1st Generation iMac G5 (purchased end November 2004). For the second time since November 2004, it was defective and the Logicboard was replaced (so my Apple Dealer told me).
First time, in November 2005, the screen went pink. Second time, earlier this month, my Mac didn't boot anymore.
The full amount for the repair (including shipping to Apple (Belgium), work hours, etc.) was over 500.00 euro (about 700 USD for you, Americans).
I believe that the iMac G5 (at least: my 1st Gen one) is simply getting too warm.
The day before, I installed "Hardware Monitor". It gave the following (average) temperatures:
    CPU: 60.6 - 63.8° Celsius (141-164° F)
    HD: 57.5° C (135.5° F)
It is my opinion that the (my) iMac is getting too hot to be "healthy". I have 2 PC's, in which I installed extra fans (at the back and at the side). One of these, with an Athlon64 3000+ (1.8 GHz) and a 120 Gb Seagate Barracuda gives (average) temperatures for the:
    CPU: 36.5° C (97.5° F)
    HD: 26° C (78.5° F)
My second PC, an old (modded) HP Vectra, with an Intel P4 at 1.6 GHz and a 80 Gb Seagate Barracuda, gives as average temperature (HD only):
    HD: 37° C (98° F)
It may not be correct to compare my iMac with PC's - but harddisks are harddisks, wheather it is a Western Digital (250 HD in my Mac) or a Seagate (PC HD's), and it is only logical that a(n average) HD temperature of 57 degrees Celsius (128° F) in the long term can not be healthy, while the harddisks of my PC's are a lot, lot cooler.
The PPC, too, gets much hotter than my Athlon CPU (and the P4 most likely too).
Therefor: is my suspicion correct that the/my iMac G5 in general is getting too hot for its own good? Even though it may be summer here (Belgium), I still find such a difference in heat values between my iMac and my PC's not "right".
Both the times that my iMac was defective, the Logicboard was replaced.
Is it possible that in both cases heat is the problem (directly or indirectly) of the defects of my iMac?
Basically we have a desktop computer constructed like a laptop, with all the hardware stuffed together in a very tight space. Why did they not keep the heat issue more in mind, when the iMac G5 was designed?
I believe that the heat is a very negative factor in the/my iMac G5. If I will have to pay such a small fortune, every time my Mac breaks down, being a Mac owner will become quite expensive.
iMac G5 (PPC), 17-inch, Superdrive, Mac OS X (10.4.10) 1.5 GB RAM, 250 Gb Western Digital HD

iMac G5 (PPC), 17-inch, Superdrive,   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   1.5 GB RAM, 250 Gb WesternDigital HD

Your Mac should have been repaired under the Apple power supply or video and power issues as long as your serial numbers were covered.
As far as normal operating temps are concerned, my Rev A is at this moment, running at CPU T-Diode 144∘and my Hard Drive is at 128∘so your temperatures seem well within normal ranges.
Yes, the machines tend to run a bit hot, but as long as the ambient temperature is not too high, they are fine. The failures were originally cause by a bad batch of capacitors but since those have mostly been replaced, the machines are much more reliable.
Some people train a small fan on the back of the computer to keep it cool, that may help you.

  • I have a older Airport Express unit that requires Airport Utility 5.6. When I try to install 5.8 on my OS X10.8 iMac, I get the message "Airport Utility can't be installed on this disk. The version of Mac OS X on this volume in not Supported"

I have a older Airport Express unit that requires Airport Utility 5.6. When I try to install 5.8 on my OS X10.8 iMac, I get the message "Airport Utility can't be installed on this disk. The version of Mac OS X on this volume in not Supported"

Why should I have to spend money to solve this problem? Many others have the same concern, Airport Utility 6 does not support  older Airport Express units. This is Apple's problem. I've tried many solutions proposed on the net but none worked. I'm still trying for a work around.

  • Why do I have to restart iTunes on my iMac to get Home Sharing to work again on my ATV2 and ATV3?

Last week I ordered two more Apple TVs 3rd generation.  I have connected them to my network and the ATV2 that I had, seems to be working differently.  I have to restart my iTunes on my iMac to get Home Sharing to work again.  I go to Apple Support and reference this page (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2972) and it seems to be the only solution, reset iTunes.
I currently have all apple products from end to end.  This doesn't seem to be working out as seamless as it should.  Any suggestions?

Until Apple gets off their butts to fix this, you can do this.  Create a workflow that 1. Closes iTunes, 2. Pauses 10 seconds, 3. Opens iTunes.  Then Save it as an Application.
    Then...
Create an Apple Script by "recording yourself" launching your new workflow.  Save that Apple Script.
    Finally..
Go into Mail, and create a Rule that when you receive an email with the subject as "Restart iTunes" it will run your Apple Script (wchich launches your workflow app).
Just send yourself an email from you chair!!!  :-)  Please reply if this works for you.  It works GREAT for me on Mountain Lion!
    Enjoy!
    Jason

When I use my dvd on my IMac I get a visualisor system error when I activate Apple TV

How would I check to see if the like works when I enable via the inspector pane
If you enable hyperlinks when you click on the link link to the pdf file it will open a browser window and display the pdf file.
I upload the pdf files to the server and link to them as if they were an external web page:
That's been more reliable for me than linking to the file as Link To: A file and have iWeb upload the pdf file to the serve.

  • 2nd generation iMac G5 is suddenly pixellating

M 2nd generation iMac G5 is suddenly pixellating to the point of unreadabilty after being on for a couple hours. If I turn it off and let it sit for 10 or 20 minute sit starts ok again. My serial starts with YD531 . Is this likely to be capacitors and how hard is that to fix. I am used to soldering , but not electronics. The computer was worked on twice with power problems while under warranty.

    Hey b'trout,
pixellating to the point of unreadabilty after being on for a couple hours. If I turn it off and let it sit for 10 or 20 minute sit starts ok again.
Now while this could be capacitors and is usually the first thing you think of in these machines. (Easy enough to check, just pull the back and look at the caps) If you're not sure what the problems look like:
    http://jimwarholic.com/2008/07/how-to-repair-apple-imac-g5.php
Now in your case I'm thinking that it has to do with temperature of the graphics chip. I just repaired my Power Mac G4 dual 1.2 MDD which was doing exactly what you describe. When I pulled the graphics card the chip to heatsink thermal past was dried out and brittle. Cleaning it up and reinstalling new paste fixed the problem.
Now the iMac is different in that there are thermal transfer pads that move the heat from the GPU (graphics processor unit) to the heat sink. The heat sink is of unusual design and my suspicions if you read through this post:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2559193&start=0&tstart=0
is that they fail. I know of no way to test them or tell if they are failing. My thoughts on possibilities are in that post.
The other thing that would help in a diagnosis would be if there was a temp sensor on the GPU, which there doesn't seem to be. (This iBook G4 I'm on has 5 sensors according to Temperature monitor. The iMac only two)
The only test that comes to mind is to run the iMac with the back off. Then you'd have to remove the upper plenum cover and blow cold air on the upper part os the plenum. If that prevents your failure you have a faulty heat pipe.

how can I get my imac to get valid ip numbers?

Try renewing you DHCP Lease, click on your system preferences and then click network.  Select your ethernet connect on the left then click the advance button, when the windows opens make sure the TCP/IP tab is selected then click the Renew DHCP Lease, wait a few minutes and then check your IP address.  Also check you DNS by clicking on the DNS tab and taking a look at you DNS servers then should be the same as you other computers.

Unable to sync iPad to iMac. Get message 'iPad can't be synced because not enough free space to hold items in iTunes Library'. Only major content is iTunes U stuff (lots of videos). Don't download any music or other videos to iPad.
Deleted iTunesU content on iPad and unticked iTunes U from syncing on iMac but message remains.
    Very frustrating.

No longer a problem. After leaving a while and trying again the iPad and iMac successfully synced.

I purchased mountain lion, but after numerous attempts until my fingers all gone numb, i simply cannot install it on my imac. i get this error message: "an error occurred while installing OS X, you cannot install OS X on this disk......".
    please help!
    imac specs:
    IMAC 24 inch Mid 2007
    Intel 2.4 GHz 2 duo
    4GB SDRAM
    OS X lion 10.7.4
    200 GB Harddrive space free

Tell us more about the disk and partition onto which you are trying to install Mountain Lion:
Open Disk Utility (in Applications > Utilities). The left column should show your disk with its partition(s) indented below it:
How is the disk (top level container) formatted according to Disk Utility:
    * What Partiton Map Scheme? (Should be "GUID Partition Table".)
    * How many partitions? (Should be 1 unless you have a Boot Camp partition.)
How is the partition (lower level container) formatted according to Disk Utility? (Should be "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".)

  • GetImagePixelPointer in IMAQ Vision hangs while trying to get a pixel pointer.

I have written several dll functions to do specific image processing. I have been successfully calling these dlls for some time. In rewriting my code to parallelize some activity, a single instance has come up where GetImagePixelPointer starts to execute but never returns. The instance appears to be related to a single image. I have looked backwards in my code and I am pretty sure that I unmap the pixel pointer from the previous time it gets used.
Does anyone have any advice? What would cause GetImagePixelPointer to hang in the Map mode?

    Hey Matt,
You mentioned things were working fine until you parallelized the code (you made multiple threads I assume). You also mentioned when you tried reproducing the problem, it worked fine. It sounded like if you took out the call to GetPixelValue in your original code that didn't work, it worked (is this correct). One of the problems I could see that having multiple threads might cause is if you create the image in a different thread than where you try and get the pixel pointer. The different threads have their own place on the heap and one thread's memory allocations may not be available to other threads.
If you're still having problems, see if you can make a small snippet to reproduce (you will probably have to use multiple threads to reproduce this problem)
    Hope
    this helps,

  • When I open my iMac, I get this message - Your Mac OS X startup disk has no more space available for application memory.  ???????

When I open my iMac, I get the following message :  Your Mac OS X startup disk has no more space available for application memory.  Then it says to quit applications not in usw and to close windows and remove files from startup disk.  It lists Safari, email and Finder.  I force a quit on all applications yet the same message comes up every time I open an application.  What do I do to get rid of this once and for all?  The computer is not even two years old and is only used for email and Safari.  Help will be greatly appreciated,

The message has nothing to do with low disk space.
There is excessive swapping of data between physical memory (that is, the memory chips on the logic board) and virtual memory (one or more files on the startup volume.) That activity is relatively slow and causes the whole system to be less responsive. It can happen for two reasons:
A long-running process with a memory leak (a kind of bug)
Not enough memory for your usage pattern
Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination.
These instructions are for OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks.") The procedure may be slightly different for earlier versions of OS X.
When you notice the swap activity, open the Activity Monitor application and select All Processes from the View menu, if it's not already selected. Select the Memory tab. Click the heading of the Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If you don't see that column, select
View ▹ Columns ▹ Real Memory
    from the menu bar.
If one process (excluding "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more real memory over time without ever releasing it. Here is an example of how it's done.
The processes named "Safari Web Content" render web pages for Safari. They use a lot of memory and may leak if certain Safari extensions or third-party web plugins are installed. Consider them prime suspects.
Another process often implicated in memory leaks is "inkjet4" or "inkjet8," which is a component of the HP printing software. If it's present, force-quit the process in Activity Monitor to solve the problem temporarily. Empty the print queues in the Printers & Scanners preference pane (which has a slightly different name in each recent version of OS X.) If you don't use an HP printer, remove the software. Otherwise, if the problem is recurrent, update the software (which may not help) or contact HP support.
"Wired" memory should be a small part of the total. That memory is not swapped, but it makes less physical memory available which may then result in swapping. If you have a lot of wired memory, that's usually an indication of a memory leak in a third-party program that modifies the operating system at a low level. Ask for guidance in that case.
If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.
The next suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:
sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total
where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the  leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details.

Did you use migration assistant to copy over programs, documents, and settings? You can't do that with PSE. Elements is not a tidy package in accordance with the apple developer guidelines. The installer strews stuff all of your hard drive in place the migration assistant isn't programmed to look and you can never hope to find all h the bits. You must always install PSE from scratch on a new machine. By attempting to copy it you have made a lot of trouble for yourself.
You will need to download and run this:
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
and then you can go around and manually remove what you can reach. Look in applications, your hard drive>library>application support>adobe, your username>library>preferences. In the user library also delete any saved application states for PSE.
Then you can reinstall from scratch.
