Why is the date in all my applications set to 12/1/12, itunes all the podcasts release dates are set to 12/1/12, in mail all emails from apple are set to 12/1/12 etc. etc. why, and can it be fixed?

Probably you have another date format. Open System Preferences > Language and Text to change the time format

It's because your hardware does not have a 64-bit EFI boot ROM. There is no fix except to sell your computer and buy a newer model that is compatible:

IMac (3.4gHz Intel Core i7) shuts down when sleeps, then won't restart

Just bought a brand new 27" iMac (3.4gHz Intel Core i7) which shuts down when sleeps, then won't restart (ie completely dead).
In order to restart, I have to unplug the power cord from the computer, hold power key down for 10secs, replug in and it then starts up. I returned to the store and they spent a couple days letting it go to sleep etc and overnight and for them it was fine. Woke up no problems. They returned it to me yesterday.
So I set it all up again, left it overnight and this morning it was dead again. So now it leaves me to wonder if it's something I have plugged into it.
I have a new Seagate 3TB external hard drive hooked up using USB3.0. This is plugged directly into the back of the computer.
I also have a powered USB hub plugged into the computer which has regular USB stuff such as printer, graphics tablet and another external hard drive (this one is older LaCie 500gb, and have put it into a new USB 3.0 case as well for the arrival of the new iMac (this had an old firewire hard drive case). However this hard drive is switched off at the case and is not being used.
I believe it could possibly be the Seagate 3TB disk causing this problem, but it works fine during the day while I am using the computer, it's just when I either leave it at lunch time to go to a meeting or walk etc or overnight that I come back and it has shut down....leaving me to believe that it's due to the computer going to sleep.
Has anyone else had a similar problem with a Seagate drive? Today I'm conducting an experiment and heading off for lunch with both hard drives unhooked. If I come back and the computer wakes up from a click of the mouse or keyboard as it should, I will plug in one hard drive at a time and re-test. I will leave the Seagate for last, as I don't think it is the old LaCie disk (which is off).
For reference sake, I also have a NAS running off my network through Airport Extreme etc and have my old iMac hooked up to the network too, but don't believe this is the problem.
Initially I did put in some after market RAM (another 8GB) and though that might be the problem, but I removed and it still reacted the same way (plus store I bought it from again booted up fine and woke up fine at their shop after I had taken RAM out too).
Will keep this post updated with my next test (letting computer sleep without either hard drive in), but keen to hear if anyone has had any similar experiences with Seagate disks/cases and the new iMacs.

I had a similar problem shortly after I bought my 27" iMac. Here is an excerpt from my discussion:
"As BDAqua suggested, I started the process of elimination by shutting down the externals and just leaving up one of the USB drives and using the computer until time to shut it off. After eliminating 2 of the 3 drives I figured it had to be the last one. That drive is a Seagate GoFlex Desk version that allows different bases with differing connectivity. I had previously used FW800 to connect but had switched to USB3 on the new computer. I went ahead and got a Thunderbolt to FW adaptor cable and switched this drive back to Firewire rather than USB3. So far so good."
For some reason the Seagate I was using didn't agree with the USB3 on the Mac.

10.10 painfully slow on 2008 iMac 2.4gHz intel core 2 duo

I made a big mistake-
My gf sees me as the guy who really knows Macs.
I updated her 20" iMac 2.4gHz intel core 2 duo (3G ram) when the prompt came up in software updates.
Now she's practicing patience as everything is much slower and problematic in keeping connected to the ISP.
Accepting that the Mac has to re-index everything, we've allowed 3 days for this, but not much improvement.
The question:
What is Best Practices (and detailed method) for getting back to her previous OS without the install disk?
This is probably best until we can get a new Mac on her desk.
Is it better to stay with 10.10.1 - if so, we need to speed this puppy up.
Any help?

The first problem may arise from the fact that iMacs use 3.5" harddisk whereas most SSDs are 2.5" ones.
So some sort of tray or 'holder' is needed.
Second problem might be the thermal sensor Apple uses in some iMacs.
Your first recommendation to your friend: 'get a bigger harddisk and more RAM' sounds like the best way.

If you or your Mac really needs the 6GB RAM than sure.
The slight decrease in speed due to not using paired-RAM isn't comparable to the gain you get from the additional RAM.
Have you used Activity Monitor as described in here Mac OS X: Reading system memory usage in Activity Monitor to determine whether you need more RAM ?

The amount of memory used for data is a lot larger than the saved file size why is this and can I get the memory usage down without splitting up the file?

I end up having to take a lot of high sample rate data for relativily long periods of time. When I save the data it is usually over 100 MB. When I load the data for post-processing though the amount of memory used is excessively higher than the file size. This causes my computer to crash because 1.5 GB is not enough. Is there a way to stop this from happening withoput splitting up the file into smaller files.

LabVIEW can efficiently handle large files, far beyond 100Mb, provided that care is taken in the coding of the loading/processing routines. Here are several suggestions:
1) Check out the resources National Instruments has put together (NI Developer Zone > Development Library > Measurement and Automation Software > LabVIEW > Development System > Optimizing Applications > Managing Memory), specifically the article entitled "Managing Large Data Sets in LabVIEW".
2) Load and process the data in chunks if possible.
3) Avoid sending the data to front panel indicators, using local/global variables for data storage, or changing data types unless absolutely necessary.
4) If using LabVIEW 7.1, use the "show buffer" tool to determine when LabVIEW is creating extra
copies of data in memory.

I recently updated the original ram from my 2.66 Ghz Intel Core i7 15" laptop. Can I take that ram (4GB set) and put in my iMac 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo?

The 15" power book had this:

The 20" iMac has this:
Memory Type: DDR2 PC2-5300, DDR2 (non-ECC)
I'm not sure what the difference between DDR3 and DDR2 is. Any support would be great.

DDR stands for Double Data Rate, the original DDR had a speed of 266MHz, double the rate of the previous memory standard of SDRAM which ran at 133MHz. DDR2 and then DDR3 are the successors of DDR. To avoid fitting the wrong type of module they use different memory slots and will only fit the one they were designed for, by way of slots cut in the memory boards at precise positions which correspond to notches in the memory slots.
If you want to know what memory will fit which computer I would go to the Crucial website and use their online Memory Advisor, put in the brand and model, it will tell you exactly which modules fit it and what kits (if any) Crucial have available for it.

IMAC 3.4GHz Intel Core i7 bootcamp graphics driver error bluescreen

Purchased iMAC 27" 3.4 GHz i7 because I wanted MacOS as development environment and Windows for playing games - thought I'd found the dream machine.
Installed bootcamp, Windows 7, and finally bootcamp drivers
Checked and updated Apple / Windows until no new updates available
System operates fine under Mac OS, but frequently crashes under Windows 7 with bluescreen of death (graphics driver fault)
This occurs when gaming (Batman Arkham City, or simply using Google Earth, IE)
Updated driver for Radeon HD 6970M from ATI AMD website with same result.
Windows 7 now recognised a new driver was available for Radeon HD 6900 series and updated (this has the most recent release date being late last year)
System still has fault under Windows but driver appears to reset and continue without requiring a Windows restart (mostly).
A quick Google reveals I am not alone with discussions concerning the indentical proplem spanning several years and apple machines - generally pointing the finger at the lack apple SMC temperature control under Windows. Is this true? If so I not sure if I should expect a solution from Apple.
Is their a solution? I am reluctant to use third party software to control minimum fan speeds - mainly because I expect more from this machine (no matter which OS is running it).

I see InputRemapper had fan control added, not sure if it will be suitable for later machines. I'll see if I can find anything newer.
Last night used Windows for gaming - in the end the top edge of the iMac was to hot to touch - can't be good for the machine.
Wonder why Apple don't include a fan control function as part of bootcamp - it would seem a critical function to protect the hardware.
Is there a down side to running the fans harder (like wearing them out). I have been able tu use smcFanControl under OSX to raise the minimum fan speeds.before I reboot to Windows.
smcFanControl has speeds for ODD,HDD, and CPU. Does the iMAC graphics card (HD 6970M) have its own fan?
sorry lots of questions - to be honest kind of got hooked on Batman Arkham City ... and it runs very nicely, just a shame it cooks the hardware.

My iMac 3.4ghz Intel Core i7 is beyond lethargic. How can I clean it up or something?

I have 4GB RAM, 1 Tbyte HD and 2 2T backup external drives (one USB and one Firewire connected.) I recently moved from Comcast (34 gb download speed to U-Verse at 17-18 Gb. The internet speed may be noticeable, but I notice the sluggishness when I'm not doing anything online.
IPhoto seems like it slows things down. I have 20,000 photos and 10,000 songs stored. In my 1 T HD, I'm using less than half.
Sometimes when I wake it up, it will take 20 plus seconds to wake up.
I have not called AppleCare yet.
Any ideas?

I read through the process of exporting photos and songs to an external drive. I don't have time to study it more tonight (you are up late, if that is a Massachusetts address.) But, I will look again.
I also scanned the article on uninstalling MacKeeper. I'm pretty sure I didn't let it encrypt. But, it still looks like a time-consuming process. I'll look at that again.

And when my grandsons are here, they load Roblox and go pretty deep. When they leave, I exit Roblox.

You can try to repair your library. Once you are sure the files are all taken care of, you can sync the phone to remove all of the music and then sync again to add it back. That should take care of the issue.

I am looking for a Suitable ethernet cable for my new Imac 27-inch iMac 3.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 (Mavericks 10.9.4) & old imac 1 GHZ PowerPC G4 (10.4.11) for transfering files, documents, photos into my new intel mac from my old power PC imac.

Note, the iMac G4 1 Ghz only supports 10/100 base-T. Firewire is up to 4 faster with a cable such as this one:

IMac 2.0 or 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Can't decide if I should get the iMac 2.0GHz or 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. Will the 2.0 handle Garageband, iMovie and iDVD or will I need to get the 2.4GHz. I do plan to add more memory either way. Will I still be happy with the 2.0 in 3 years? I'd appreciate any input.

I went for the 2.4GHz and I'm very glad I did, it just feels much...quicker. I run iMovie and iDVD all the time and they run very fast and as nice as I could ever hope for. The 2.0 version will handle everything and will handle it well, but the 2.4 version will handle it better...so to speak. Also I think that the 2.4GHz version will last you a little longer if your looking to get a few years out of your Mac (like I am doing as well).
