IMac 350 MHz Kihei 128 MB okay for Jaguar?

I recently picked up a Blueberry Kihei model for $10 and am hoping set it up with KidPix, apple works, and other legacy software for my little sister. It only has 128 MB of RAM; is this enough to run the above programs and Mac OS X 10.2? I have Tiger working well on all of my machines with as little as 256MB, but the Kihei model, being only 350 MHz G3 and not even officially supported with Tiger, I want to stick with either Jaguar or OS 9.2.2. I really want to put OSX on it though. I grew up with 8.6 in school and LOVED it, but going backwards is not where I want to go. I want to at least give her a modern operating system. Can I do this with 128MB?
MacBook Pro 1.83 GHz, iMac Summer 2001, iBook Dual USB, PowerMac G4 AGP, iMac G5, iMac Kihei   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   iPod Video Gen V, iPod mini, iPod HiFi (awesome btw.)

You need at least 256MB RAM and approximately 5GB of free space on the hard disk to install Mac OS X and use it effectively; if you choose to install Mac OS X, you should use Mac OS X 10.3 instead of 10.2, as you will get significantly better performance on your configuration.

  • IMac 350 MHz 10.3.9 DSL/Linksys router

    History:
iMac connected fine with my comcast cable modem/linksys router wired.
    10.3.9 iMac 350 MHz
When I brought it to my Brothers house (he has DSL and a linksys wired router) it won't connect with either DHCP or PPoe ...
    HELP!

DSL supplied by AT&T (SBC) or Verizon can have a router attached to the modem. It is my understanding that is true of most DSL suppliers.
The purpose of the router is to channel the demands of multiple computers at the customer end in an orderly manner into the DSL service (that allows only one connection at a time at the supplier end) so that the demand on the DSL supplier is the equivalent of a single computer. I believe some DSL suppliers allow more than one connection to their line, but I have not personally verified that.
I believe the suppliers' rules for cable service may be more restrictive than for DSL service, as additional connections degrades cable service, but not DSL service.

  • Mothers G3 350 mhz [suggestions to get it to X]?

I've installed Tiger on my Cube and it works great for what I want to use it for - email, browsing, digital photos, etc...
My mother [she's on OS 9 now ofcourse] owns a G3 iMac 350 mhz and she does less than I do. She mostly emails and uses her browser and uses her digital camera on occasion.
I know I would have to upgrage her internal HD like I did my cube. I called Apple and they even said the firewire requirement wasn't carved in stone as they actually sell X on CD to consumers.
My question is this: Is X, realistically, something I should install on her computer and she could use it? If Tiger isn't recommended, could we buy an older version of X, say a valid one from eBay, and she could still use Safari and Mail (just older versions) but use them well on her computer?

    Hi mjp29,
As regards Tiger, the bottom line is that Apple does not support its installation on a computer that does not have built-in Firewire. This was a hardware "line-in-the-sand" that Apple drew so that they would only need to hardware test computer models with Tiger that had built-in Firewire.
If you get the Tiger installation on CD and try to install it on a computer that has no built in Firewire, the installation will not proceed without a workaround program such as XPostFacto. So, yes, you definitely need XPostFacto if you wish to attempt this installation.
The versions of Mail and Safari on Tiger are different to those on Panther. In a Tiger supported computer that has Panther installed, when you update to Tiger, all settings and lists are transferred from the older Panther versions of Mail and Safari to the new Tiger versions. However, it is extremely problematic to try to go the other way.
If you are running Panther, there is really no point in trying to install the Tiger versions of Mail and Safari, they probably won't work, and any new features that the later versions have probably don't warrant the hassle anyway.
The Panther versions of Safari and Mail are still perfectly functional and meet current requirements.
There are other places than eBay to purchase the full retail Panther installation set. Just make sure that they have a black label with a silver X (don't accept anything else). There will be 3 installation CD's plus an extra utilities CD.
    Cheers!
    Karl

  • Maximum hard drive size for 350 MHz slot loading?

    Hello,
What is the maximum hard drive size for a 350 MHz slot loading imac?
I am aware of a 128 GB limit on imacs. Does the 128 GB hard drive limit apply to all imac CRTs or just the earlier models?
Here are the specs of my imac:
    Blueberry 350 MHz
    Slot loading CD-ROM drive,
    6 GB hard drive
Is the maximum hard drive size limit of 127GB apply to this particular model?
    Thanks

Yes, the last CRT iMac was in 2001. The first machines with built-in greater than 127 GB support were released in June 2002, as this article explains:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86178
So all CRT iMacs have that limiation.

The 8 GB limit is explained here:

  • IMac 400 MHz G3 DV - DVD Firmware

    Hi,
    I got hands on a :
    iMac 400 MHz DV (G3 - M5521)
    PowerMac2,1 (PowerPC 750)
    Order No. M7493LL/A*
    EMC: 1821
    DHHS: LA
    ATI Rage 128VR (2D/3D) AGP 2x (8MB VRAM)
    Date Oct. 5, 1999
    Disc Date July 19, 2000
I already updated the firmware to 4.1.9 and installed Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.11) and OS 9.2.2.
I currently have the Matshita 8184 (Panasonic) DVD ROM (SlotIn) with Firmware AA31.
I read there was a AA27 before and I also read that there is an update 1.0
When I tried to install Firmware Update 1.0, it said, it already got updated.
I even found Firmware Update 1.1 for the DVD ROM (fixes audio cd readability)
    http://www.macworld.com/article/1021740/dvdrom.html
(but it clearly sayys only for 400MHz DV Special Edition. More about that in the next chapter)
I wanted to test the machine using your Apple Hardware Test, but I was told, that there never was a AHT for my 1999 machine.
I was also told that there was a "iMac 400 MHz DV Special Edition" in mid 2000, which supported the AHT (1.0.1 (?)) and its only difference to my iMac 400 MHz DV would be the ATI 128 Pro instead of a 128vr. (?)
Are there any other differences ? Would that AHT run on my machine then ? I ask because :
I read that AHT 1.1 might work on my machine as well :
Apple Hardware Test 1.1 for IMac G3,....?
    So, questions would be :
1.) What other differences, except for the Graphics Adapter are between my iMac 400MHz DV and the iMac 400 MHz DV SE ?
2.) Is there a Hardware Test for my iMac ?
3.) Will the DVD Firmware Update 1.1 install on my Matshita 8184 (Panasonic) DVD ROM and which version would it be ?
Or does the iMac 400MHt DV SE has a differentr DVD ROM model and if so, which one ?
4.) Is there a way to choose between OS 9 and OS X on booting up ? Pressing "C" will only show the OS that I selected via StartVolume before.
    Thanks for your time.
    Regards,
    iMac1999

I have a lime-colored G3 iMac DV (400 MHz) from 1999.  The iMac DV SE that shipped in 2000 had a 500 MHz processor, a 30 GB hard drive, a 4x DVD-ROM drive, the marginally better ATI Rage128 Pro GPU, and 128 GBs of SDRAM.  It was available in Graphite or Snow.  The internal DVD-ROM drive may have had a sequentially newer model number, than that used in the 1999 models.  I wouldn't be concerned about updating the firmware in your DVD-ROM drive - it is what it is - a 15 year-old computer with similarly dated hardware.  I didn't receive an AHT disk with mine, and have had no reason to run it anyway.  If you would like a much more modern internal DVD±RW drive, you can buy one here for $149.  Obviously, that exceeds the value of your iMac.  With onboard FireWire ports, I have used external CD-RW and DVD±RW drives, rather than replace the internal drive.  A common problem with those slot-loading optical drives occurs when the neoprene sleeved rollers (that pull in and roll out the disk) get dry/slick with age.  This will cause slipping and is usually indicated when the disk repeatedly gets stuck, as the motor keeps churning to eject it.  I maxed out the memory at 1 GB and installed an 80 GB hard drive, but that's all.  As for the resolution setting, I wouldn't be concerned about using a 60 Hz refresh rate (and dealing with the annoying flicker).  Just select the optimal resolution & refresh setting.  The greater concern for component failure in those iMacs is its Power-Analog-Video (P-A-V) board, which is the heart of the system's power.  Replacement requires previous experience with CRT repair, because of the potentially dangerous stored electrical charge that must be properly discharged in order to swap P-A-V boards.  Finding a new "old-stock" P-A-V board would be difficult, if not impossible today.  Installing a used part with unknown remaining service life could be a waste of money.  If you wish to boot from your Tiger installation, you can press/hold down the "X" key when you power ON the computer.  That model also supports using the Startup Manager, which you can read about here.

  • IMac 350 Upgrade

    Hi,
I recently decided to attempt to upgrade my iMac 350 and would like to check a few things before i get started.
First of all, i am primarily wanting to put OS X on my iMac and then wanting to fit it with an airport card.
I have read on many different iMac upgrade websites that in order to run OS X i would need to increase the RAM. Am I correct in thinking that the i would be able to add just one PC100 SDRAM of 512MB or would i need to pair it up with another PC100 of 512Mb? Also, i have read that PC133 is the RAM i need to use. Are both PC100 and PC133 compatible with my iMac and is the PC133 RAM the more recent version?
I know that a lot of people have asked which is the best version of OS X to use when upgrading an iMac which is currently running OS 9.1 please would you be able to recomend which is the best version to use if i am planning to upgrade the RAM with the 512MB.
An issue that also has arisen is that i would need a little bit more hard drive than the original 7GB which came with my mac! i wondered if it would be possible to increase the hard drive space, or whether i could just use an external hard drive.
Finally i would just like to confirm that in order to make my iMac wireless internet compatible i need to get hold of the original airport card which was released when my iMac caame out (around 2001) and also an iMac airport card adaptor. Please could you confirm where this is the case or whether i am able to buy a more recent version of the airport card.
Sorry for the long windedness of my question!
    Thanks
    Ian
Mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.8)
Mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

You'd be able to run OS X with 512 MBs of memory, although many Forum regulars would recommend adding more. You don't need to match the memory DIMMs in both slots, so you could (as an example) use a 512 in one and a 256 in the other. Your iMac requires PC-100, but PC-133 that is backward-compatible can be used. My iMac DV 400 has one 512 MB PC-100 DIMM and another 512 MB PC-133 DIMM, and they coexist without any problems. I'd recommend OS 10.3.x (Panther) for your iMac 350, because it's less demanding of older computers than the current version OS 10.4.x (Tiger) - which requires onboard FireWire. Panther is discontinued, but you can find it available online, so get a universal installer/retail version of the installer disks, and not another model Mac's Restore CD or DVD. Lacking onboard FireWire ports, an external hard drive connected via USB 1.1 is not a viable option. Your internal hard drive can be replaced with any 3.5" (IDE/EIDE) ATA-100 or ATA-133 drive (not a SATA drive). A 120 GB drive is the largest capacity that can be installed and be fully-recognized. The next size and larger (160 GBs —>) will only be recognized as 128 GBs. Here's a Macworld article, with very detailed instructions for hard drive replacement in the slot-loading iMacs. In lieu of the original AirPort card w/adapter that you'd need, you could also use a wireless ethernet transceiver, like the Linksys WET-54G. The device requires no drivers and plugs into the ethernet port, converting it to a wireless signal.
As is often pointed out, by the time that you invest your money in additional memory, a larger hard drive, the OS installer media, and the wireless card, you will have spent enough to consider purchasing a newer Mac having the capabilities that you want. After buying/installing all of the hardware listed, you'll never be able to recover the total costs for doing so, if you attempted to sell the upgraded iMac 350 a week later.

  • Will latest Media Player work on updated iMac 350?

I've bought a 120 gig Seagate 7200 speed HD, 512 megs more ram, and a retail version of Panther to upgrade my mom's iMac. For the most part she will only use Safari, Mail, & put a few digitial camera photos on it to view and store. However, she recently signed up for Netflix movie rentals and currently can't view the media player trailers in OS 9.1 - they don't offer Quicktime trailers (which I've contacted them and requested they please offer Quicktime trailers with no response from Netflix).
Will she be able to view them in Panther if she downloads media player? From the minimum system requirements (like a G3 with 400 or 450 mhz) it at first glance appears she again can't view them; however, the system requirements are "recommended" and I'm wondering with this faster HD and around 640 megs of memory that perhaps it's possible - especially since the Netflix previews are fairly low resolution. Comments/real user experiences with the recent versions of media player on such an older system would be much appreciated.

So you think that the latest Windows media player will work on the iMac 350, it just may stall sometimes.
I know the previous version of Media Player is still avaliable, would it work any better on older machines like the iMac 350?

  • Need Help with iMac 350 - Won't boot - keyboard or mouse not working!

    Hello,
I've scoured the web looking for answers, and can't find any, so maybe someone here would be kind enough to help. I'm working on an imac 350 blueberry for my sister and I'm having all sorts of trouble.
She bought it last week, it started up (8.6 os) no problem. Powered up and down a few times, then all of a sudden, it won't boot. I'm currently getting blinking folder/happymac/question mark when trying to start up.
Here's the big problem - the keyboard and mouse do not work now. I've tried three different mice and three keyboards and no dice with any of them. I have the 8.6 CD from her previous imac (bondi), and I can hear it spinning, but there is no way to start up from cd.
I've also tried 2 other hard drives with the same results.
Tried resetting CUDA on logic board, taking out battery, no change. Bought new battery- no change.
I would love to at least get the keyboard working to see if I can even startup from cd, anyone have any clues on how to get it working? The strange thing is that the keyboard has a power on button, and it works to start the thing up, but dies when it tries to boot. Sometimes I just get a grey screen with the pointer icon, and I can move the pointer with the mouse for a second or two, then no response.
I appreciate any help or suggestions on locating the issues!
    Thank you!

When I said "but dies when it tries to boot" and "..then no response." I meant that the keyboard works to power up the computer, but won't work for anything else. So, I am figuring that the usb ports are supplying power to the keyboard and mouse, but the usb ports aren't relaying information from the keyboard or mouse.
How do you know the mouse isn't working? Won't you have to wait until later in the boot to tell?
The poweron key is a special case. I think that it works by lowering/changing the voltage on one of the usb cables. I read about this somewhere. Anyway, this function was eliminated from later usb keyboards and macs. Maybe a working power button doesn't mean what you think.
I would love to boot into open firmware
Could you try powering up from the machine? Is there a power button on the lower right of the machine?
Have you tried this key combo?
    commandoption+of
The letters are in lower case. Hold all down then poweron the machine. I'd poweron from the machine as apposed to the keyboard.
You could try another usb keyboard.
We actually did boot up the computer several times with it upside down. Not for any reason, except it's become a real PIA to flip it over every two minutes to start it, then take it apart and boot again. When booting either upside down or right side up it shows the same thing - blinking folder w/finder icon and question mark.
Yes, I agree. You could try removing the clear plastic around the bottom of the machine. At least you will not have to slide in the carriage. Note. The tv portion will still be surrounded by plastic! Don't remove the plastic around the tv!
Hope I am not interfering with Richard and his comments.
Richard: Is this the orginal keyboard? When did Apple get rid of the poweron key from the keyboard? My iMac 600 didn't have the key and my iMac 233 does.

  • New 9.2 install into G3 B&W 350 mHz desktop......

    Good morning.
    I need to start out fresh with a new-to-me 350 mHz G3 B&W.
    I have a "retail" disc of 9.2.
I would like to completely erase the boot drive and install a fresh OS 9.2.
Can anybody remind me how to do this?
The computer currently has a much modified OS 8.6 system.
    Thanks for your time!

    Insert the 9.2 disc.
Go to Apple menu -> Control Panels -> Startup Disk.
    Select the CD.
Restart the Mac from the control panel.
The CD should now appear on top right above the hard drive.
    Follow these directions to erase:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=50447
Run the installer when done, and make sure to install Mac OS 9 drivers in the process.

I was able to find these instructions, however they referr to 2009-2011 27" iMacs. I think it's the same, if it's not then contact Apple directly for instructions. If either of the machines is less than 90 days old or covered by AppleCare then call AppleCare tomorrow for help, they should be able to easily answer this for you. You will find the number in your manual or you can use the AppleCare Contact Info link.
Your iMac should automatically recognize the presence of a digital video signal at the Mini DisplayPort and enter Target Display Mode.
If your iMac does not automatically enter Target Display Mode, press command + F2 to manually enter Target Display Mode.

If have separate iCloud accounts and want to keep your all your iCloud data separate, you can create separate user accounts for each of you, then sign into your individual iCloud account within your user account.
If you want to just add both iCloud calendars on your Mac, you can sign into one iCloud account in System Preferences>iCloud, then add the second account in System Preferences>Internet Accounts>iCloud and only check Calendars with this second account.

Unfortunately, that drive is long gone, probably back to the mfr. Drives are not returned when they are exchanged. You can go by and ask them, but the chances are slim to none.
