IMac DV 450 Target Mode With Vista....?

after my imac died, i was told i could recover the data using target mode..
anyway i dont have another mac to load it with, so am trying to use my vista laptop.
came across an app called HFSExplorer which should allow me to view the contents of the mac once in target mode... (as the drive doesnt show up in my computer as standard)
anyway, problem is - even with the HFSExplorer app, it doesnt see the mac...
there are a good few things i could do with rescuing from the drive, so any ideas?
cheers

I don;t think that can work. You need to start the Mac in FireWire Target Disk mode and have it connected to the other computer with a FireWire cable. Sounds like you imac won't start.
Probably the easiest way to look at the files from a PC is to pull the drive from the iMac and use a gadget like this:
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/U2NV2SPATA/
to connect the bare drive to your notebook. Remember, not all files will be readable on the PC. MS Office files should be no problem, but files from a Mac-only application may not be directly readable.

Yes, you can use Target Disk Mode with a suitable adapter:
OS X Lion: Transfer files between two computers using target disk mode
To determine the cable you need requires you describe which MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models you have. The latest ones have Thunderbolt ports, for which you can use a Thunderbolt cable. If the MacBook Pro has only a FireWire port, you can use a Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter. Early MacBook Air models have neither.

  • Viewing G5 on iMac Screen (not target mode)

I just bought an iMac, 27". I also have a G5 desktop with Cinema display that runs os9 (which I want...I have several OS9 niche apps that don't exist for OSX).
I'd like to lose the cinema display and view the G5 video on the iMac - NOT just see the drive, Target mode.
In other words, two CPUs, one (iMac) monitor, the G5 video showing in a window or switching with the iMac video with a keycommand. (I know I could get a KVG-USB so I could run one mouse/keyboard for both.)

Apple calls this Target Display Mode Thunderbolt 10.6 Help: Using another Mac as an external display but your G5 is sadly to old to do it.
With the ThunderBolt iMacs only other ThunderBolt Macs can use these iMacs as an external display.
With the 2009 and 2010-model  27" iMacs it has to be a MiniDisplayPort connection.
Maybe ScreenRecycler http://www.screenrecycler.com/ScreenRecycler.html can be of help for you.
Air Display would be another one but requires Intel-Macs on both.

  • Target Mode with multiple partitions??? Also file sharing

I am trying to connect my MacBook Pro to my older G4 using a firewire cable. My G4 has 2 hard drives, and one is divided in to 2 partitions. When I restart my G4 in target mode only the drive that is my start-up disk shows up.
Is there any way around this?
I've thought about just connecting my computers through file sharing but it only lets me share files in my public drive. Is there a way to share all of my files?
    Thanks,
    Justin

    Emailing you now...
Lets say the Username on Machine#1 is jk1, Username on Machine #2 is jk2, and is an admin on #2...
Then from Machine#1 use Go>Network, type in the name of Machine #2, (use the actual IP if the name can't find it), it should come up with the Dialog box with jk1 filled in for the name and asking for the password... but you have to change the name to jk2, (the one with permissions on Machine #2 to see everything), then type in the password of jk2.
The only thing I can see why this wouldn't work for you is if Machine #1 can't find #2, or Permissions need Fixing on #2.

  • Target Mode with PCMCIA Firewire Card??

Just bought a 17" PowerBook. Planned to use migration tool to move data and info from my old 15" TiBook. BUT!! My TiBook's internal Firewire port fried a couple of years ago and I've been using a PCMCIA Firewire card. Can you access Target Mode through an external Firewire card?? Doesn't seem so.
When I boot with "T", it comes up in target mode, but migration tool doesn't recognize the target mode machine thru pcmcia firewire.
    Any solution?
    Jim

If you are able to mount an external FW drive on your Ti's desktop using the PCMCIA adapter, then perhaps you can clone your TiBook's HD to the external and then use the external as a source drive for Migration Assistant. (You are able to use a bootable clone on an external FW drive as a source for Migration Assistant, in any case.)
    Good luck!

  • Can I use my iMac's mouse and keyboard on Target mode with my MacBookPro?

I have my MacBookPro conencted to my iMac via ThunderBolt Cable.
I want to be able to put my MacBookPro aside and use my iMac's mouse and keyboard.
    Is this possible?

You'd have to switch the connections after enabling. It's not something I've tried so I don't know if your MBP will
'see' them when they're already connected to your iMac. Worth a try though.

  • How can I re-activate my creative cloud  with a firewire disc in target mode?

I am a hurrricane evacuee. I have lost my home to flooding. It will be months before I get my original internet connection back, if ever. I am staying at a friends and they have wifi, but I am not allowed to reboot their router or their modem. I have an old 7 year old mac book pro that won't run all the CS6 apps, and a mac pro 1.1 that will, but does not have wifi. I tried to tether the mac pro to the laptop and share the wifi to re-activate, but the mac pro is not picking up the connection without rebooting the homeowner's cable modem and router, which I am forbidden to do. So I am considering finding some firewire cable somewhere and trying to run the mac pro in firewire target mode, with the mac book pro connected to wifi internet to try to re-activate. Does anyone know if this will work? Also, is there any way to know which day of the month your subscription has to activate? I am going to be shuttling from one couch to another for some time, and if I am lucky enough to drag my mac pro along, I will have to keep doing this.
Suggestion- Adobe should have a special alternate system for people who lost their internet and homes due to hurricane sandy and do not have wifi machines.

    Hi Kay,
Sorry to hear about your difficulties on a lot of different levels . I'm inclined to think the target mode will not work because the activation process is reliant on the OS as part of the way it works. I think the target disk mode just treats the secondary system as an external drive - so the activation would be only affect the old mac book pro and not the apps on the target drive. But I could be wrong, it still might be worth testing given the circumstances. The activation process starts on the 11th of every month for your account.

  • Cannot connect to G5 in Target mode

I'm trying to connect to my old G5 in target mode - it starts up in target mode OK, but does not mount on my connected Intel Imac. I've checked /volumes, and it's not hiding there. I can connect to my MacBook in target mode fine, so the problem would seem to be with my G5. Also, target mode works fine in the other direction, but this isn't much use to me.

What happens if you try to connect the iMac G5 (in target mode) to the MacBook (instead of the Intel iMac)?
On the iMac G5, have you done a reset PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
and if that does not help, a reset SMU
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1767
which is basically disconnecting the iMac from power (and all cables), then re-connecting it, following a precise procedure. When you reconnect it, leave ALL peripheral devices disconnected, except for your standard USB keyboard/mouse. Then try target mode again, after first starting up normally.

  • Wrong drive appears in Target mode

Hey guys. I know this is probably something very simple, but I'm trying to restore the drive on my G4. I've previously carbon copied my drive to an extra drive in my G5, as I regularly get weird cache problems on my G4. Now that it's happened again, I want to Carbon copy back from the G5 to the G4, but when I connect in target mode with firewire, I cannot find the primary drive on the G4, only some secondary drive which helps me nothing
Is it as simple as switching the actual harddrives around/changing the jumpers on the actual harddrives; or is there some setting somewhere that I'm missing?

    Welcome to the Discussions.

  • Need help  Target mode  G3---G5

Trying to get an old G3 (blue-white) to start in target-mode-- not luck holding down "T"=key-- hooked up to intelG5iMac via firewire..
any help appreciated. Need to access info from old drives... cannot access info in another way....
    regards

There are several ways to start a computer in the Target mode:
    To transfer files using FireWire:
Shut down the computer to be used as a disk. Leave the other computer on.
Connect the two computers with a FireWire cable.
Start up the computer to be used as a disk, then open System Preferences, click Startup Disk, and click Target Disk Mode. (Or, start it up while holding down the T key.)
A disk icon appears on the desktop of the other computer.
If your other computer does not boot up, then it is possible that the HD is no good. You will not be able to start in the Target mode with a bad HD.

Can you install tiger on a power mac g4 with out a DVD drive if so how, I do have have a 2011 iMac can I use that in target disk mode with a FireWire cable any help would be appreciated

    Hello,
You need to put the Tiger Install Disc in the 2011 iMac, boot the 2011 uMac into Target mode...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Boot the G4 holding the Option or alt key, hopefully the Install Disc in the 2011 iMac will show as a boot choice.
We just want to use the 2011 iMac as a big expensive FW Optical drive, it cannot be installed osing the 2011 iMac itself.

  • Can't use Target Disc Mode with Imac Indigo? help

So after holding off on buying a new imac for over 5 years I decide to pick one up. I restarted the intel imac in target disc mode. After doing that. My old imac gives me a message saying it can't read the contents of the hard disc connected through the firewire.
This older imac doesn't even have an option for target disc mode. It has Panther OSX. Do both computers have to have the same operating system? Are there any other options out there. I just want to get the 7 gigs of music off my old imac and onto the new intel imac.

Depending on which indigo you have, some didn't even have FW ports. The slot loading ones did, and according to Apple, with firmware 2.4 you can use FW Target mode. (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583)
Another option is to connect the systems with FW but configure IP over FW and then enable sharing on the indigo and connect to it.

Use Software Update or the OS 10.6.8 combo update to update your OS.  Also, update everything SU has to offer for your computer.  When done, repair permissions and restart your computer.

  • MacBook Pro mid 2010 - iMac late 2012 in target mode?

Can I connect a MacBook Pro mid 2010 with Mini Display Port with a late 1012 iMac in target mode? Thanks.

A 2010 MBP does not support Thunderbolt technology so that is not an avenue for you.  A Fire wire with one of these adapters should enable you to connect the two devices:
