IMac won't sleep now!

Since I hooked up my Apple TV and synced some content from my iMac, the iMac does not seem to want to go to sleep on its own. It was fine before I hooked up the Apple TV. Any suggestions?

After following the method outlined a couple of posts above - (move the energysaver.prefpane out of it's folder (Macintosh HD > System > Library > PreferencePanes) and onto the desktop, restart, then double-click the EnergySaver.prefpane on the desktop and install for all users (installs it in Macintosh HD > Library > PreferencePanes)) - mine seems to be working again.
It's not working exactly how I remember it working pre-10.5.8*, where it used to sleep pretty much exactly on the time you set in the prefs - now it sleeps approximately 1m30s - 2mins after the time you set. Weird, but appears to be working for now...
*my iMac was insomniac for ages under 10.5.8, then we had to clean-reinstall from the install discs meaning we were temporarily on 10.5.4 - and it worked fine. Updated back to 10.5.8 and it stopped sleeping again.

Looking at the original post again and comparing to my mac, it seems like it's a problem introduced in the latest versions of 10.5 and 10.6.

IMac won't sleep and freezes on shutdown

My iMac has developed an annoying problem. Most nights, when I try to put the computer to sleep, it goes to sleep and the immediately wakes back up. I exit all programs running in the dock and try to sleep it again, but the same thing happens. I will then try to shut it down, but it freezes on the screen that shows the wheel with the lines (sorry for the bad description there). Any ideas?

Mine follow;
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit.
If you've set your Mac to receive faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Receive Faxes On This Computer box.
If that doesn't work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.

By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. tomhorvat adds this; After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute.
After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.
Tristan Currier noticed this; "I have a Canon printer(shared) and my imac would not sleep. I opened up printer/fax in system prefs and noticed it said the printer was in use when it was off. Opened up the printer queue and noticed about 7 pending documents. Deleted them all and now it sleeps.
Check the printer queue!"

24" iMac won't sleep!

Just wondering whether anyone else has encountered the same problem: my 24" Intel iMac won't go to sleep! Every single method of putting the machine to sleep does not work:
CMD-OPT-EJECT;
(ii) Apple menu - SLEEP;
(iii) setting the Power button to put the machine to sleep;
(iv) even just letting the machine go idle (after setting appropriate sleep options in System Preference).
What happens each time is the machine TRIES to go to sleep (the screen goes dark for a second), you hear a soft click coming from within the machine, and then the screen comes back on again. Any assistance/suggestions/fix would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!

If you have Disk Warrior, then use it to check the state of the HD directory. Directory errors can trigger oddities in the system. If you don't have it, open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder and "verify disk", seeing if any errors appear. DU is nowhere as advanced as DW; hence, errors may be present beyond the capacity of DU to detect or repair them.
If errors do appear via DU, start-up your computer from your Installer DVD. When fully booted, go to the Utilities menu, select Disk Utility and "repair disk". Rerun until you get a clean pass. Then restart the computer and try the sleep mode again.
Genius Bar visit either will lead to an Archive and Install of the OS, or perhaps a hardware repair (I think A & I).
Regardless, post back when you learn something more definitive.

External display on 2011 21" iMac won't sleep

I have a Samsung SyncMaster 213T attached to my iMac12,1 through a MiniDP->DVI Adapter attached to the Thunderbolt Port on the back of the mac. Now I have the problem that the display won't get to sleep together with the iMac's one.
This feature worked in the 2009 iMac with the same Adapter on the Mini DisplayPort port.

So, I've turned off file sharing and the machine seems to be sleeping reliably. Next experiment is going to be to re-enable it but not actually access any of the files there. Goal being to see if simply having FS enabled is causing the sleeplessness, or if it's because it thinks files are actually being accessed. Incidentally, I found this old KB article about sleep not working while FS was enabled, but it's for 10.0 - 10.2. Anyone know if this is still applicable?

New iMac won't sleep with internet sharing on

Less than 3 month old iMac (core i5) has stoppped being able to sleep when Internet Sharing is enabled. It took me a good while to narrow it down to that but I've confirmed that when Internet sharing is off, it will sleep as it's supposed to. When sharing is on though, not only will it not automatically sleep per the energy saver setting, it wo'nt even sleep when forced with the Apple command. The display will turn off, but the machine does not sleep. I can tell by the facts that my wifi access on my iPhone continues to run off the iMac, and the Caps lock on the keyboard remains lit. (Too bad the blinking LED is no more on the new iMacs).
Sleep was working fine when I first got the new machine; it seems to have stopped shortly after I upgraded to Lion. (I think it may have been working for a few days after installing Lion, but I'm not positive...I'm thinking now I just thought it was asleep because the display would turn off.)
I've looked at all the related sleep posts I could find but nothing seems to address this particular issue. I know I could just turn off sharing whenver I want it to sleep, but tha't's like having to disconnect my car battery when I want to shut the car off.
Any help is appreciated.

Well, I'm certainly no expert at this and I'd never enable internet sharing (being too concerned about the health of my Mac and/or not knowing what untoward sites/networks/people may be seeking access), but it seems to me that having it turned on means that your computer is sharing a connection, so anytime anyone on the network seeks access, it will either wake up the Mac or cause it to stay awake. Here is an excerpt from the Help Menu (in Finder) (which has nothing to do with your question, but I found it interesting nonetheless):
If your Internet connection and your local network use the same port (Ethernet, for example), investigate possible side effects before you turn on Internet sharing. In some cases (if you use a cable modem, for example) you might unintentionally affect the network settings of other ISP customers, and your ISP might terminate your service to prevent you from disrupting its network.

IMac won't sleep external monitor

I have an intel imac and I've been using it about a month. Today I noticed that the second screen (Hp L2335) is not going to sleep when the imac is. The monitor is hooked up via the mini DVI adaptor cable I purchased.
The monitor seems to be able to do sleep mode in its other functions but when I try to get it to go to sleep with the imac, the screen just stays frozen as if it captured the last frame. When I wake the imac, it updates and is active. I know this because I'm using it as the primary monitor and I can see the digital clock in the upper right.
anybody else ever had the same problem?

this problem seemed to magically fix itself after about half a week.... I'm not sure what was going on.

Imac won't sleep when network drive is mounted

Is there a way to put imac to sleep when network drive is mounted. It goes to sleep when the drive is mounted. The display goes to sleep but not the system.
One more thing.....Is there a way to keep a network drive mounted after restarting?

I figured out what the issue was, finally. After playing around, I noticed that my InDesign Fonts folder, had "alias" links to some fonts that resided on that shared drive. As soon as I deleted all the ones that where aliases, the error went away. Hopefully this helps someone in the future.

IMac won't sleep

this has been a problem for a long time.
It'll sleep if you tell it to sleep right now, but not if you set it to sleep after a specific period o inactivity.
I' had used IceClean in the past to set it to do a safe sleep to make it easier to move around, but I had set it back to standard sleep.

Hi, I'm facing the same problem with my computer, not automatically going to sleep, although I can manually do that.
I've tried shutting down programs and widgets that monitor system activity or get information from the internet, but that didn't work.
I am using a DSL modem which I leave on all the time, I disconnected the PPPoE and after that the computer automatically went to sleep. Seems that was the problem.
So the only solution that I've found so far is to set the connection to disconnect after being idle for a certain amount of time.
Any other suggestions? I'm not particularly satisfied with the solution I came up with.

Aluminium iMac won't sleep automatically!!

Let's see if someone can help me: I have an iMac 24 "aluminium, with 2.4 Mhz Intel processor, 3GB Ram. The problem: I have is that the iMac does not automatically enters into sleep mode, if I go to the apple menu and choose the sleep works OK, but if I hope to be performed automatically does not work. After Mountain Lion installed, 27" late 2009 iMac won't sleep

As the title says.....
Worked fine since new, but with Mountain Lion, it won't auto sleep. I have a numbe of iProducts, but only this one isn't working. Energy saver settings are fine.
Desired behavior is after a few minutes the screen goes dark, then spool down after 15min, but it never happens. It will sleep if I hit the power button.

IMac won't sleep or sleep hard disks either!

My iMac is late 2009 and am running Mountain Lion 10.8.2. I used to be able to click sleep under Apple menu>Sleep or by simply pressing the sleep button at the back of the iMac to ensure it goes to sleep including the hard disks. However, for the past 3 days the screen will just go black but not sleep, as if I'm pressing a command to turn the screen off only.
I checked to make sure bluetooth devices do not wake up iMac.
I checked energy saver to make sure that 'Put hard disks to sleep when possible' is checked
I checked that network interuptions will not cause iMac to wake from sleep
I checked to make sure downloads or programs are not running in the backround to prevent the iMac from sleeping.
I checked to make sure that USB devices are unplugged and even ethernet cable.
I checked other forums and common answers to this problem would be the above I listed which I made sure is not my problem.
Please help my iMac's insomnia!

Try resetting your SMC
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord.
Wait fifteen seconds.
Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

IMac won't sleep after Mavericks upgrade

After installing the Mavericks upgrade, I notice that my late 2012 iMac computer does not enter sleep mode, while my monitor does. The Energy saver settings are the same as before the upgrade (computer and monitor sleep after 10 minutes, i.e., system default settings). Has anyone else experienced this?

This is always due to a process keeping the system awake, but determining which is the challenge.
A first simple step is to create a new, temporary user account. Log out of yours and log into the temporary one. Determine if it sleeps then. If it does then you have a login item that is preventing sleep. System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items.
Whenever you suspect a problem related to power, including sleep, an SMC reset is also recommended.
Active Spotlight indexing will prevent sleep. Wait for it to complete. Allow a considerable amount of time following an OS X upgrade.
Check your Sharing preferences for anything that could permit an active network connection.
Energy Saver "Wake for network access" can prevent sleep, but unchecking it will prevent the ability to remotely access a sleeping Mac over a network. A normally functioning Mac will sleep according to Energy Saver, but will wake periodically for network access, after which it will return to sleep according to the settings in Energy Saver.
Unfinished print jobs will prevent sleep. If a print job is queued, but if the printer is off or the connection to it is lost, the Mac will stay awake forever waiting for the printer to return.
Safari pages that periodically refresh themselves are very common. This will prevent sleep.
Frequently checking for new mail may prevent sleep. Change Mail's preferences to check for new mail less frequently.
iTunes and iPhoto sharing will prevent sleep.
Active Bluetooth devices will prevent sleep.
Active USB devices will prevent sleep.
Using Time Machine over a network can prevent sleep.
There are plenty of third party utilities designed to prevent sleep. One may not have been completely uninstalled.
Quit the process with the name powerd in Activity Monitor. It will re-launch on its own.
Any number of "anti-virus" utilities can prevent sleep, along with other miseries. Get rid of them.

Won't sleep after install of wireless router

I bought a D-link WBR-2310 wireless router and installed it between the internet modem and my iMac. Everything is working good after configuring the router but my iMac won't sleep now. Its like the iMac is picking up a constant signal from the D-link via the ethernet port. Any thoughts?

First check the sleep settings in Energy Saver preferences. If everything looks correct and..........
If you are using a cable modem turn your computer & the cable modem off. After about 30 seconds - 1 minute, turn the modem back on first, then turn your computer on.

Machine won't sleep on it's own.

This may not be a Leopard specific issue, I had it with Tiger also. My eMac and new iMac won't sleep with the HP All-in-One printer software installed. The software has three active apps (one which controls a root process) that won't let it sleep. I can manually sleep it, but the energy saver setting is useless. The display will sleep, but not the machine.
I posted in the eMac category, but this is not machine specific, either, seems to be HP specific.
I trashed the culprit apps, but then I couldn't scan (the device was not found); it did let the machine sleep, though. I tried fixing the permissions after re-installing the latest software from the HP site (a VERY long process), and turning off the printer, still no sleep.
Anyone else have this issue? Any suggestions? I thought maybe if I created an alias for the culprit apps and stored the originals on a removable device, or even a .dmg and only mount it when I need certain printer functions, that may stop them from constantly running.
Any help would be appreciated

My eMac FINALLY achieved sleep last night after about 50 min. I have the sleep timer set for 1 minute, maybe the fact there was a scheduled TM backup kept it awake. I have the printer turned off, and it has been manually slept and re-started since it was turned off, don't know if any of those was a factor.

I had anacron installed, but removed it the best I could, it is not needed in Leopard.........

PowerPC won't sleep

For the last couple of months, my PowerMac won't go into sleep mode after the set amount of time has passed. I can sleep it manually, but if I walk away it will run all day, although the screen will turn off as programmed.
This is a G5 dual 2 ghz machine fro around 2005, running OS X 10.5.8. I've noticed that my wife's similar vintage iMac won't sleep automatically anymore, either, leading me to believe that this might be an OS issue.

After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
Correct any Disk problems.
Repair Permissions.
Clear out Cache Files.
Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files!
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.
