IMovie 6, DVDSP 4, and Ken Burns

Hi,
There seems to be an issue with DVDSP drop zones and Ken Burns effects rendered in iMovie 6 (or any other pan/zoom software like Photo to Movie). Dropping a pan/zoom-rendered movie into a menu drop zone looks horrid after building the project, then viewing the VIDEO_TS folder with DVD player. Same result after burning DVD.
The drop zone video, as it pans and zooms, undulates in some areas while zooming, to the point of distraction. I cannot see this effect if the file is imported into an iDVD6 drop zone or opened in Quicktime 7. I have tried deinterlacing, blah, blah to no avail.
***? I paid $80 for iLife '06 and $500 for DVDSP and I get better results with iLife? This doesn't make any sense. Any advice appreciated.

If you getting a moire (intereference) effect this is usually associated with things like checked shirts or lots of very small detail in the footage. It probably looks fine in iMovie as it is larger so you don't see the effect but when you make it smaller in the drop zone all the small detail "bunches" together and because then the effective resolution is smaller it has less pixels to play with. Also are the photos you are using for your Kens Burns montage scanned from magazines... this would also give a moire effect as the scanner has scanned the dots that the picture is made up of.
I had a similar problem recently with a scene access menu created in After Effects. The scene in question had a great big venetian blind in the background. Looked fine as full sized footage but when reduced to a scene selection size it was "ringing" like crazy and looked horrible. The only way to get rid of it was to blur the footage slightly - as it was appearing small you didn't notice.
If your pics are from magazines etc. then you can use your scanners descreening methods to largely eliminate any dot...
Hope this helps

PS. As Hal said welcome back Chris - and Hal is right this board does have a sense of camararderie with everyone trying to help out

  • Photos get auto-cropped and ken burns. stop it.

Trying to do a stop motion. don't need the photos to movie. Cant get imovie to stop auto cropping and ken burns-ing the photos on import from iphoto. Would be fine, but i can't bulk adjust them either, tired of going through frame by frame and putting it back to fit. help.

When you start a new project, or to change a project you are currently working on, go to FILE/PROJECT PROPERTIES, and you can change the default behaviour for initial photo placement from Ken Burns to either FIT or CROP. Crop will make the photo fit the frame exactly by cropping off the top abd bottom. FIT will make the entire photo fit by letterboxing.
If you make your photos have the same aspect ratio as your project (either 16:9 or 4:3), then FIT and CROP produce the same result, and nothing is lost from the photo.
The FILE/PROJECT PROPERTIES will only change photos that you add going forward.
To change a bunch of photos that are already there, change one photo using the Rotate, Crop, Ken Burns Tool. Then, with the photo still selected, EDIT/COPY.
Now, select all the photos you want to change by holding down the Command Key as you click, so you can select multiple photos.
    Now, click EDIT/PASTE ADJUSTMENTS.../CROP ADJUSTMENTS.

  • "show photo settings" and ken burns glitch? please help :(

    hi, i'm having a problem,
my software is the latest version, so is quicktime, all my updates are up to date, i'm not using an external hardrive.
i was creating a music video composed of all still pictures and everything was going fine untill today.
the "show photo settings" display box has a glitch or something.
the slide bars for the ken burns effect have disappeared.
a checkmark on the imovie display is now visible and the apply and reverse buttons have disappeared.
i can no longer exit out the photo settings window the same way as before.
when pictures are added to the timeline they are much too long.
i'm unable to keep the ken burns affect box checked, it keeps unchecking itself and it wont allow me to change any photo settings on certain pictures and on the ones it will allow me to when i press "apply" or the checkmark it stalls and wont render the file (the red line doesn't fill and just stays there)
when changing the length or display time of the picture it will delete itself and replace it with the next picture in line.
can anyone help me? i've spent a massive amount of time on this video and would like to finish it. i dont know what the problem is. maybe i clicked something i shouldn't have?
    thanks in advance

i'm estimating around _1000 pictures_ ... they are all being stored on the desktop ...
    WOW!
... how long does your poor Mac need for booting??
The >40y old Xerox metaphor of a Desktop/Folders/trashbin had the concept of simulating reallife.. would you store ~1000 pics on your desk while glueing them into an album (ever glued 1k pics into an album?) ...?
I assume, your System is 'cluttered'. totally cluttered.
try to clean up ... in Finder, clean your File 'System'... create folders (many folders...), use the pre-installed structure your Mac came with (how about storing pictures in... ehm, Pictures?), why not using iLife as intended (import into iM from iPhoto), why not using the integrated 'File Management' of iPhoto to create albums, to give your mass of pics some structure, finally consider to use approbiate apps (if you try to create a stopmotion-like movie, QTpro or Boinx' istopmotion are better tools) ...
keep in mind, a Mac needs at last 10-15GB free on internal drive to act normal.
export as much as you can to external drives (firewire connected, 'MacOsExtended' formatted), don't forget to give these harddrives structure too .. you know how to create Folders in Finder?
after all is set and done, your desktop is clean, everything is in its place, use Disk Utility to check&repair... finally, reboot your Mac, give it a chance to 'recreate' itself in better shape
... and there's still a high chance, that the fragile file management of the 20$ consumer app iMovie is still overwhelmed by >1000 stills in one single project...

  • Thmes and Ken Burns Effect

All images used are still photos at least 5x7 inches @ 300ppi. I like the "Themes" feature in iMovie, but when i drop the photos in, they seem quite "soft" as the Theme goes through its motion. Also; when I preview the Ken Burns effect, the photos look fantastic on the screen as I zoom and Pan. However, when I hit the "Apply" button, the images soften. Any explanation for these two questions? One more question please, would a more expensive software product produce sharper results? Thanks very much. Wayne from Studio 24

    Hi Wayne
I'm not so familiar with Ken Burns but can share some thoughts.
1 - If I would use KB in an iMovie project I would definitly NOT use the Share/Export
to iDVD function within iMovie BUT
    a) Close iMovie
    b) find the project icon/folder
    c) Ctrl-click on it and Show package.
    d) in this there are a folder -> Shared Movies -> iDVD
    e) in this there is a QT movie nnnnnnn.mov
    - You can test this with QT-player to see that it is OK -
START A NEW iDVD project - so that old material will not interfere.
    f) drop this into an open theme in iDVD (just inside the edge of the
window) and save it as a desktop image
(if iDVD prior HD/5 You have to add a hack to make this possibly
    named HPfurz and install it)
Test this with Apple DVD-player - OK then burn it with iDVD
or Toast if You have and don’t want to re-code the movie.
2 - I use more and more FinalCut Express HD 3.5 and in this there are no
Ken Burn as a function but there are a much more powerful function to lay
out motions by hand and in a very precise way. And here You have a really
    super quality on Your picture.
BUT on the other hand FCE has a rather steep learning curve and to me lots
of trial and error. But it's much more fun than any coputer games I came across
to date. AND it costs !

  • IMovie producing scrambled video with ken Burns effect

I was creating a movie with stills from iPhoto. The first 3 photos are using the Ken Burns effect just fine. Anything after that is absolutely unrecognizable. It looks like a scrambled mess of what is on my screen. I can actually see my Dock in the video. This is really strange. It occurs with photos I've edited and with ones I haven't. I have the latest version of Quicktime (7.0.4), iMovie (6.02) and iPhoto (6.0.4) as well as Tiger.
I've never had this problem before. As long as I don't use the Ken Burns effect I'm fine.

    Hi Appleman1958
Thanks for the advise. I'll give it a try when I get home tonight. Went nuts last night looking for a way
to do it. Didn't want to do them one at a time or delete it and start over. Any idea why the pictures
are not nearly as sharp when I burn to a disc on iDVD. as they are when viewed on iMovie or Aperture?
    Thanks Again,

  • Trouble saving transitions and Ken Burns Effect

I have tried to reverse the Ken Burns effect and add panning and zooming in I-movie and it will not save. When I preview the photo (it's a still photo) the preview plays like I've designed it to play; however, the new effects do not save on the movie. When I add still photos to I-movie, they are all added with the same effects-in other words, they all are panning the same way. I want to switch it up, but can't seem to get my photos to save.

    Found my answer...
Don't use FCP to create slideshows of still images. David S. provided the real answer... use Fotomagico.
What had taken me five hours to create in FCP, downsizing images, creating start and end markers for motion and adding sound... took me TEN MINUTES in Fotomagico. It's nuts.
I don't even care to guess at the insane amount of hours I spent creating slideshows over the last 8 years in FCP. I could cry.
As a photographer, I'd much rather be spending time shooting than sitting in front of a computer. This program will allow me to do that.
Again, big thanks goes to David S. for providing the answer.

  • Photos in Timeline and Ken Burns Effect (Motion Control)

I'd like to check my processes for setting photos with the Ken Burns Effect. I've used Tom's Motion Control example to set Ken Burns Effect on two or more photos that are next to each other in the timeline. I have found that if the photos are approximately the same pixel size that it works well. When they are significantly different I still see the second pic holding still for a few frames and then the movement.
So, I'm interested in other experiences. Did you also find that the relative size of the photos makes a difference? And, when you have photos that are significantly diff in size, what process do you use to bring them closer together?
    Thanks,
    dave

    Hi David,
I think the problem you are having is similar to one that I was encountering while finishing a project a few weeks ago. I also was using photos of differing sizes, but the issue with the late start on the "Ken Burns Effect" on the second photo wasn't related to the differing photo sizes, but to the transition I used between the images.
I found that when I applied Motion to a photo using keyframes, the motion looked fine on both images until I applied a cross dissolve in between images. I realized that the cross dissolve is looking for frames before the motion keyframe to blend with the previous photo. Since the frames before the keyframe are "generated" (I'm not sure if that's the correct word) from the first frame of the still (which has no motion) it generates 15 frames (for a 1 second cross dissolve) that are not moving. That makes it appear like it's stuck and then starts moving when the playhead hits the motion keyframe.
My solution was to move the still photo clips (one at a time) up one video track, extend both ends 15 frames and set the motion keyframe at the "new" beginning of the clip and the "new" end and do my motion based on that new clip length. I then brought in both ends back to their original positions and dropped the clip back into its original spot and then applied the cross dissolve. Now the cross dissolve would have 15 frames with motion to work with for blending the two pictures.
It was incredibly tedious, but I had to do it because the images made up a large part of the video project I was working on. If anyone can suggest a better way of doing it, I would greatly appreciate it.
Despite the time involved, I was really happy with the final results.
    I hope that helps.

  • Pictures resolution and ken burns

I'm very unhappy of how the pictures look when I make a DVD. When I do some slideshow either with i photo or i movie or final cut the resolution is good on the Mac, but when I do a DVD (either with idvd or dvd pro) the resolution on TV is very bad. When I use a ken burns effect the resolution is much worse because a lot of "striping waves" appear on TV reproduction.
Have I to change the resolution of the pictures or I have to change some preference in idvd ?

Try this: Go into "Preferences" in iDVD, under the "Projects" tab, chose encoding "Professional Quality". You will have to restart the program to make it work.

  • How can I stop iMovie from automatically cropping and applying kens burns to my photos?

When I import stills into iMovie, it automatically adds a kens burns effect to each photo, and crops them. If I want to get rid of these effects, I have to do it manually for each individual photo. This takes alot of time and is very tedious to do. Is there a way that I can stop iMovie from automatically adding these effects? Or maybe a way that I can undo these effects on all photos at the same time?

in the iMovie Project settings/pref, you can switch-off the automatic applying of KB

  • Ken Burns Effects Don't Work in iMovie HD (I've Tried Everything)

    Version:
    OS X 10.4.10
    iMovie 6
    *Hardware 1:*
PowerMac G4 Dual 500 Mhz, 1GB RAM, Internal 40GB HDD and Internal 320 GB HDD
    *Hardware 2:*
PowerBook G4 500 Mhz, 512MB RAM, Internal 20 GB HDD
    Problem:
This problem occurs on both of my G4 Macs. In iMovie HD, I imported a JPEG from iPhoto with Ken Burns Effects on. The still photo appeared properly in the Clip Viewer initially, but appeared as a black screen in the iMovie Monitor. Once the imported photo with the Ken Burns Effects completed rendering, the clip in the Clip Viewer turned white and appeared as a white screen in the iMovie Monitor. I have tried almost everything I read about in these forums in search of a resolution.
    *Resolutions that Failed:*
    1. The photo is definitely a .jpg
    2. Tried importing the actual .jpg file as well as importing from iPhoto.
    3. QuickTime and all other Software updates have been applied and are running on the most current release.
    4. Repaired disk permissions.
    5. Created, saved and manipulated the iMovie file in the standard Movie Folder on my main internal hard drive. (i.e. – I'm not saving to an external HDD)
    6. Created, saved and manipulated the iMovie file in the standard Movie Folder on my secondary internal hard drive. (i.e. – I'm not saving to an external HDD)
    7. Deleted the 'mac.imovie.plist' file and created a new one.
    8. Attempted to do apply the effects logged on as a different user.
    9. Saved file, restarted machine and reopened numerous times but the problem persists.
    10. Tried a lower resolution photo and the problem persists.
    11. Attempted to import all the photos I planned to use, added transitions to all of the clips and rendered completely. Saved the file, restarted the machine and reopened the file with no change to the blank clips.
    12. The iMovie trash emptying issue did nothing to help.
    *Additional Notes:*
    1. The problem is confined to the Ken Burns Effects in iMovie. I am able to work with true video clips without incident.
    2. Ken Burns Effects operate properly in iPhoto 6 using the slideshow functionality.
    3. I would use iPhoto, but it seems like it would be easier to line up specific sections of an audio track with certain Ken Burns Effects in iMovie. (i.e. – a crescendo at the 16 second mark of the audio track coincides with the end of a 'zoom' on a photo, transition from second 16-17 second mark, new photo at the 17 second mark and pan left to right from 17 second mark to the 25 second mark.) Point is that it lines up precisely with the markers on the audio track, which seems far easier to do in iMovie than iPhoto.
    4. Please help me, I'm going nuts troubleshooting this bug! I can't find any resolution that works.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Hmmm. You seem to have tried, without success, most if not all of the methods of resolving a Ken Burns black screen issue.
Some thoughts that have occurred to me:
    1. Perhaps your G4 500mhz Mac is not fast enough. I think that the minimum spec for iLife '06 is 733mhz. Might have nothing to do with this problem, but I just mention it.
    2. Are the sizes of your images too large, as can happen with some of these new high def cameras? iMovie has trouble working with very large images.
    3. Do you have any 3rd pary plug-ins, particularly in Quick Time, that could be causing a conflict?
    4. Do you have enough disk space for the project to operate?
    5. Have you done a recent Quick Time update? Some users have reported a problem with that.
    6. From your post, it appears that you have continuously worked within the same iMovie file that exhibits the Ken Burns problem. If this is true, try creating a new iMovie project and experimenting with a few clips to see if the problem persists in the new project.
Ken Burns issues can be very frustrating. I think that you will need to keep trying things until something works. Wish I could be more help, but perhaps some of the tech experts on this forum will have some workable suggestions.
There is an application called Photo to Movie that reputedly has a far better Ken Burns type of effect. If you can't resolve your problem, you might try downloading that app. I believe that it offers a demo download.
    Good luck.

  • Importing iphoto 09 pictures into imovie 09 with ken burns movement!

Im making a video on imovie 09 using still images i took and imported to iphoto. Then i import those iphoto pictures into imovie, BUT all the pictures have moving "ken burns" crop effects on them after i import them to imovie!!! i know how to fix it, by going to the "crop tool" and "ken burns" adjusting the start and end effect of this movement but my question is....
how do i change this setting so I dont have to tediously use the cropping ken burns tool on every clip which will probably make all the images appear shaky??????

Go to FILE/PROJECT PROPERTIES and you can set the default behavior when importing photos to the project.

  • Automatic Ken burns and framing in iPhoto and Screen saver

I am generating a slideshow from iPhoto. When I have framed the photos properly I am checking my slideshow as a screen saver. Automatic Ken Burns options and framing are ok. Now I try to generate a slideshow directly in iPhoto, and the framing is completely changed and the Ken Burns options are different.
How can I get the parameters of the screen saver properly in iPhoto?
Is there a way to know which parameters are used in the screen saver and be set as the defaults parameters of the iPhoto slideshow?
Otherwise I found it difficult to set the same parameters as the screen saver for framing and Ken Burns.
I have tried to do the job with iMovie, it behaves the same as iPhoto, not a the screen saver.
    iPhoto is version is 7.1.4
    Mac os X is 10.4.11
    I would be grateful.

I do not have the feeling that the rendering engine of the screen saver option of the System Preferences of Mac OS X is different from the one included in iPhoto or in iMovie. But the difference between the first and the two others at least is the parameter setting is done automatically.
I have tried since at least two other slideshows, and I could get for fex photos the same settings thant for the system screensaver.
However as my slide show is about 140 photos, I was looking for a global setting instead of a one by one slide.
    Any further comments?
Thanks for the thoughts in any case.

  • Ken Burns and Crops

I intend to edit my 4:3 dv footage in 16:9 most likely at home on FCE or possibly at university on FCP.
Usually, up until this point anyway I've used imovie. I pretty much always go to File > Project Properties> and then set 16:9 (even though I use 4:3 footage). Then I just use the crop and ken burns tools to slide the video up and down at different points to cut any unwanted footage at the top and the bottom of the frames. In this instance I want to crop out unwanted furniture at the bottom of my shot during a wedding service and later to crop out high disco lights at the after party.
Today at university whilst having my first ever play on FCP I noticed the ken burns and crop tools were not as obvious as in imovie 09. Although I did mess with the cropping and key points a little I still have no idea. Most worryingly I couldn't figure out how to set the project up as a 16:9 (I told the bride and groom they would get it in widescreen). I did find the widescreen effect however but its not really what I'm looking for because I want the frame to be able to track up and down at different points along the timeline.
I will explore the program more tomorrow, any tips would be most appreciated.
    Thanks
    Kev

A myriad of reasons really. Firstly imovie 09 isn't to great at importing dv footage. I've been told iMovie HD 6 is better but then again I have no idea if you can switch a project to 16:9 in it and use it in the same way as 09.
Secondly I needed the smooth cam effect in FCP to sort some shaky bits of footage out.
Thirdly, they have FCP at my university and nobody is ever on the macs there (all on pc's), so the technician gave me free reign on one, my friend also said he would sell me FCE dirt cheap for my home computer (although this development hasn't happened yet).
Is there no way to shift the footage around like you can in imovie with a 16:9 crop
