IMovie HD ruined my iLife

I've been working on a project which is a combination of DV footage, archived video (from archive.org - 256kb MPEG4) and video recorded off the phone (in 3gp format). The version I'm editing is now toast thanks to iMovie HD, and the backup is not previewing, so I'm worried it's not really there.
In the latest interactions with my final cut, iMovie's apparently destroyed all of the video and audio for the whole project, turning it into an unplayable choppy mess. Even the clips which weren't operated on in the last operation are now screwed.
The project was toasted following the execution of an audio extraction on specifically selected video clips. Most of the other clips already had audio extracted previously, (painfully though without mishap). However, all audio and video is now unable to be played smoothly.
Only a few clips (< 4 mins total) were selected for this final operation which scrapped the project file.
The objective of the extraction was to be able to level up the audio from the different forms of vid, as I can visualise the audio levels on extracted audio, and not on regular video clips.
The result, not only was all of the extracted video and audio choppy, but the whole project is now corrupted, with every video frame and audio waveform unplayable within iMovie. Haven't even tried to extract it to DVD in this state. Have to present it to 250 people tomorrow on DVD. I'm less than happy.
What should I be doing? Just want to have video with level audio - should it be this hard? Should I just not be using iMovie for anything more complex than a 1 minute piece (this is 10 minutes). Hope I can recover the data.
THE BACKUP
The backup I previously took appears to be there (happily taking up 8.71 Gig of disk space anyway) and was the original form from which the working (and previously viewable) version was taken.
However, even this now, when played from my firewire backup drive at least, shows as a blank white screen with no audio whenever you try to preview it. I'm assuming that's not there either. However, this will hopefully be fixed by moving it into its original location (are file addresses not relative for iMovie HD?).
I'm hoping that I can recover a version from the original package in some way, even if it's just recovering the DV clips themselves, which still seem to be there in the package, into a professional editing program like Final Cut Pro. Hopefully a friend will be able to save the day with his copy later this eve.
THE BACK STORY
After much pain with iMovie HD on a Powerbook previously, I achieved the final cut, and even succeeded to burn a DVD. None of this was easy. iMovie bombing out when you change the resolution to try and make views bigger (tiny thumbnails you can't recognise). iMovie chugging when you try to extract audio, iDVD exporting with chapters being impossible, mysterious.
I'm getting really bad results from iMovie HD generally. Regular beach balls entertain me when doing practically anything, including navigating through the timeline.
I'm running it as installed by default on a MacBook Pro 2GHz dual core with 2 Gig of memory. Even a video editing program shouldn't have resourcing problems in this environment, but regularly hangs.

This happened to me in an earlier version.
Check to see if you have clips or audio clips with the same name... it can't handle that... good luck

  • Does iMovie 06 Work with iLife 08

I have a PM G4, PM G5 (SP 1.8) and a PB G4 1.25. From what I have read, I am convinced that iMovie 08 will not install on any of my macs.
    See this link:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/imovieHD6.html
I'm curious to know if iMovie 06 will work with the various components of iLife 08. If so it would be worth it for me to purchase iLife 08 since I only do SD video, have no interest in HD video and that way I could use the iPhoto, iweb etc components of iLife 08 with iMovie 06.
If it dosen't work with the other components of iLife 08 then I'll not but it. I'll wait until after Leopard is out in October and then buy a new iMac with Leopard and iLife 08 installed. Also by then the bugs in iLife 08 should also be documented and even some updates released..
    Anyone know?
    Thanks,
    Bob

Thanks Len and everyone who has provided input!!! I'm feeling much better that those of us who have older but still fine running macs with the ability to run leopard when it is released will still be able to use iLife 08 via iMovie 06.
Here is one final question before I mark this solved. I understand that when you install iLife 08 it leaves iMovie 06 intact. But does it upgrade the remaining components of iLife 06 to iLife 08? I have been in the habit of saving my current iLife suite as iLifeXX old and then doing an install of the new version of iLife. This way I would still have the old version to revert to and also have it available if I still had some old iMovie/iDVD projects that were still in the works.
It is very encouraging Len that you were able to successfully import an iMovie 06 project into iLife 08.
Just want to be sure before I do the install and all (except iMovie) of my iLife 06 apps have been replaced with iLife 08 apps.
Again, thanks for all the good news.

  • IMovie in the new iLife 06' and video for iPod

    Hi,
I was planning to upgrade to iLife 06' for the ability to take video thru iMovie and convert it to video for the iPod. Normally I would use Quicktime pro for this but my mac is not connected to the internet and it does not have USB 2.0. I am on limited funds here and I can't splurge to take it in to the shop and have a USB 2.0 card (plus a few other things) installed, Quicktime pro, plus iLife. I was wondering if anyone purchased iLife 06' and has had a chance to experiment with rendering down video for the iPod. If you have experimented with it, does it export directly to the iPod? or does it render to a file you can add to iTunes to download to your iPod that way?

    Hi Ron,
I'm still using antiques hard-/software and can not afford such "stylish products" as a videoPod (well, I do own two iPods... my wife would kill me for No3...)
but as you can see in the link, "iPod video" is just a mp4 compressed file with some "special settings"...- special in meaning of, the iPod is able to playback... you can playback such compressed file with any Mac/Quicktime prepared PC....
    BUT!
it is highly compressed and very small/resolution... for iPod that's fine, but for watching on computers, I would recommend some other settings/procedures...
by using the iLife suite, I don't know, wether the resulting files are "exportable"/in iTunes you normally can export any content... I guess (but I'm not sure...)

  • Imovie (and all other ilife apps) Crashing or not opening

    Hey Everyone,
I'm running a new Imac intel and have been having issues lately with all of my ilife applications. I have used them all before and they worked fine. Edited movies in imovie and went right through idvd and everything. Used itunes everyday.. But lately, they're all getting a bti crashey. itunes will not even allow me to click on some of my playlists. And it's not overloaded with tunes.. I've only had the system a few months .
I can't even open Imovie or idvd. I've deleted the prefs and removed all the movie files from the movies folder. But that only gets me as far as being able to open imovie with a new proiject.. but... as soon as i try to import footage or open an old file it crashes.
I've tried zapping the p-ram deleting the prefs and reinstalling the apps. all to no avail. It just got me as far as being able to import some clips into imovie. But as soon as i went to save or even click on an imported clip it'd crash..
I have no idea where to go next with this.. i posted it in the imovie forum as that's the app I'm trying to use at the moment... Any help would be greatly appreciated..
    Thanks!!

I've been having the same problem for the past week or so on my Powerbook, which I've had for nearly two years, and which has run beautifully until now.
It started last week with iTunes; I uninstalled 7.02 and reinstalled 6.5. That seemed to solve the problem.
Unfortunately now, this morning, after trying to update Quicktime, I find that none of my iLife apps will open. I've repaired the disk permissions -- it didn't work.
Guess I'll try to reinstall the iLife suite this evening, but I'm getting a little nervous. I do remember installing a security update last week, and the problems started shortly thereafter. I wonder if that's more than a mere coincidence?

  • Is iMovie HD 6 - the iMovie 6 from a iLife 6 - or how...?

Hi all - have read a lot of the problems with the resolution issues in the iMovie 9/iDVD pack - and also that I can't download the iMovie HD6 from anywhere.
So just to be sure that I will ask for the right "used" software of IMovie HD 6 to buy - is it a part of an ealier iLife 6 pack, so if I ask for that I will have iMovie HD6?
Or is it a part of another software pack?
    Steffen .-)

Thanks Lennart - I'll try to look for iLife 06.
Do you know why it's called iMovie HD6 (the HD in the name? - High Definition or...?) - todays version it's just called iMovie 9 (which I have just bourght)...

  • IMovie 06 HD with iLife 08

I know iMovie 06 can't read iMovie 08 projects and vice versa, but can iMovie 06 work with iPhoto, iTunes, and iDVD 08? I'd like to upgrade iPhoto specifically, but I don't want to lose the timeline and other features that Apple didn't include in iMovie 08.

    Hello, Bob_M,
Yes, all the other iLife 08 apps will work great with iMovie 6. After you install iLife 08, you will find your iMovie HD6 in a folder called iMovie Previous version. You can open either version to create a movie. When you want a quick video for the web, use iMovie 08; when you want the full-featured iMovie, open iMovie6. I currently am working on about 8 iMovies, and I just finished a 2hr one--all in iMovie 6. I just burned it to Disk Image using iDVD08. Some have reported difficulty with chapter markers staying where they are placed. Apparently they drift and get off by a few seconds. I cannot address that personally as I have not yet burned the DVD from my project.
Go for it! The new iPhoto is great!

  • IMovie keeps ruining the timing of my slideshow, help!

Okay, this is just about the most frustrating thing I've ever encountered... I have a 4 minute song, and 88 photos in iMovie.  The photos are timed and customized with the Ken Burns effect so I don't want to have to do re-do all that.  I've tried the transition settings in the menu, but no matter what I do the transitions add time to the project and it becomes too long for the song.  Mathmatically, it doesn't make sense, since I've calculated it out.  IF the transitions were to just overlap the clips it would come out to the perfect length, but it keeps adding time to the project no matter what I do.  There has to be a way to do lock in the timing of my photos, and the song, and just have it transition between clips without any time added.  Please help if you know.

iMovie is just a half-baked piece of software that only meets the needs of somebody who isn't trying to do anything precise.
That would be iMovie 11 then!
I only use iMovie 6 with iDVD 7.
There are many ways to produce slide shows using iPhoto, iMovie or iDVD and some limit the number of photos you can use (iDVD has a 99 chapter (slide) limitation).
If what you want is what I want, namely to be able to use high resolution photos (even 300 dpi tiff files), to pan and zoom individual photos, use a variety of transitions, to add and edit music or commentary, place text exactly where you want it, and to end up with a DVD that looks good on both your Mac and a TV - in other words end up with and end result that does not look like an old fashioned slide show from a projector - you may be interested in how I do it. You don't have to do it my way, but the following may be food for thought!
Firstly you need proper software to assemble the photos, decide on the duration of each, the transitions you want to use, and how to pan and zoom individual photos where required, and add proper titles. For this I use Photo to Movie. You can read about what it can do on their website:
    http://www.lqgraphics.com/software/phototomovie.php
(Other users here use the alternative FotoMagico:  http://www.boinx.com/fotomagico/homevspro/ which you may prefer - I have no experience with it.)
Neither of these are freeware, but are worth the investment if you are going to do a lot of slide shows. Read about them in detail, then decide which one you feel is best suited to your needs.
Once you have timed and arranged and manipulated the photos to your liking in Photo to Movie, it exports the file to iMovie  as a DV stream. You can add music in Photo to Movie, but I prefer doing this in iMovie where it is easier to edit. You can now further edit the slide show in iMovie just as you would a movie, including adding other video clips, then send it to iDVD 7, or Toast,  for burning.
You will be pleasantly surprised at how professional the results can be!
To simply create a slide show in iDVD 7 onwards from images in iPhoto or stored in other places on your hard disk or a connected server, look here:

  • Disabling Automatic Scene/Clip Detection in iMovie 8.0.5 (iLife '09)

I can't seem to find a solid answer to this anywhere.
As far as I can tell, iMovie has taken away the ability to disable Automatic Scene Detection.
See, I have several old videos that I've ALREADY edited and printed back to tape. Now I'm trying to re-import these old movies so that I can share them online.
However, when I import from my camera, iMovie is splitting up my edited movies into its own separate clips which are ordered by date.
It's quite annoying! As far as I can tell I would have to reorganize all of these clips and essentially re-edit them. I decided to just bite the bullet and reorganize my clips, however when doing this, the music in my original movies isn't exactly consistent when jumping between clips.
That said, is there any way to import video without iMovie automatically splitting up my clips???
    Thanks!

Yes you would need QT Pro c/w QT7, however for much the same price you can upgrade to Snow Leopard which comes with QTX, which allows video, audio and screen recording without additional plug-ins.

  • Installed ILife but iMovie does not show ANYWHERE

I cannot find iMovie anywhere after installing iLife. I've heard many dissapointing things about iMovie 08, but I had no problem with the older version of iMovie. Any suggestions?

If you mean you installed iLife '08 over iLife '06, look for a folder named "iMovie (previous version)" in your main "Applications" folder.

  • How do I install iMovie 06 with iLife 09 ?

I have installed iLife 09 on my MacBook. I don't like the new iMovie version and want to go back to iMovie06 but keep the rest of iLife 09. I don't even care if iMovie 09 is still there, I won't use it. I have the install disks for iLife 06 from my old computer. How do I do the installation? Do I first need to remove iMovie 09? Or do I have to remove all of iLife 09 and re-install all but iMovie 09 after installing iLife 06? What is the easiest path for me? I want all of iLife 09 except I want iMovie 06 in place of (or in addition to) iMovie 09.
    Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple discussions.
Many people use iMovie 06 with iLife 09 & 08
There are 2 ways to do this.
    1) Use Pacifist to install just iMovie 06 from the iLife 06 disk.
Pacifist is an application for Mac OS X that opens up .pkg installer packages, .dmg disk images, .zip, .tar, .tar.gz, .tar.bz2, .pax, and .xar archives, and more, and lets you install individual files out of them. This is useful if you need to install just one file out of a package instead of the entire package.
    2) Delete iLife 09, install all of iLife 06, then re-install iLife 09.
When iLife 09 is installed, all of the old iLife applications are automatically deleted EXCEPT iMovie 06, because Apple WANTS you to have it.
I like method number 1 myself.
    I use both iMovie 06 and iMovie 09 (iMovie 06 about 90%, iMovie 09 about 10%).

  • Bought iLife '09 but can't use iMovie '09 - what now?

While deleting stuff to make room on my Mac to install Leopard, I deleted iMovie because I bought the Mac Box Set and figured I wouldn't need it since I was about to install iMovie '09.
As I'm installing iLife, I read that I don't have the correct processor - this little tidbit of info wasn't on the box or anyplace else I looked. I figured if I could install the Leopard part of the Box Set, I could install the iLife part. I bought the box set including iLife because of all those apps iMovie was what I wanted most.
The ability to use iMovie was why I bought 2GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage the day before.
Is there a way to at least get the version between '09 and what I had originally? I've still got the install disk for iMovie 2 but I'm really feeling like I got ripped off here.

    Sorry.
The system requirements can be found at the Apple Web Sites and the iMovie requirements changed with iLife '08.
Not many software vendors offer returns or substitutions so the buyer must do their homework prior to purchase.
When iMovie version 7 shipped (iLife '08) Apple did offer a free download of iMovie HD version 6.0.4. That has been removed since the release of iLife '09.
BTW, you will not be able to install Snow Leopard for the same reason.

  • Keeping iMovie HD along with rest of iLife 09

I just ordered iLife 09, mainly for the Garageband and iPhoto improvements. I want to keep my old iMovie HD 6 from iLife 06. Didn't ever install iLife 08, so I don't have the special iMovie HD 6 that apple had available for download last year.
What I want to know, can I have both iMovie HD 6 and the new iMovie 09 installed at the same time? Or, should I not install iMovie 09 from iLife installer (hopefully that is possible). What have other people done?
I don't have the iLife 06 install DVD, it came installed on my Macbook (March 2006).

    G.Mitchel wrote:

It's not special. It was the same version as what you have (assuming you've updated it within the past year and a half).
What I want to know, can I have both iMovie HD 6 and the new iMovie 09 installed at the same time?
Yes, iMovie HD will not be removed when you install iLife '09, but of course you should have a backup, just in case.
Or, should I not install iMovie 09 from iLife installer (hopefully that is possible).
It is possible to choose which applications from iLife you want installed, but like I said, iMovie HD will not be replaced.

Then you do have iLife '06. It is on the discs that came with your computer.

  • Where can I get iMovie HD for iLife '08?

    Hello,
I used to have iMovie HD installer for iLife 08 saved on a flash drive which is now destroyed...I got it from Apple's website, but now I cant seem to find it. If someone could help me find it so I can have iMovie on my eMac, I would greatly appreciate it.
    Thanks in advance.

    That's no longer available.

  • Apple please upgrade iMovie HD for iLife '08 feedback submitted

Its one of the easiest yet flexible movie making apps. I've got projects in progress and lots of archived projects and it would be nice to have the backwards compatibility.
    Thanks !

When you install iLife 08 and iMovie version 7 the installer moves your iMovie 6 version to a new folder.
You can continue to use iMovie 6 after the iLife 08 install.
