IMovie keeps freezing on editing

I just got my macbook pro a week ago, brand new but for the past few days my iMovie keeps freezing up whenever i try to edit a video, or scroll through a clip. I can't use the option-command-escape to force quit because it doesn't work, and i can't click on any of the other apps or icons. The only way was to hold down the power button and restart my laptop. Even after restarting, it still does the same thing, freezes up in the middle of editing or scrolling, then i have to shut down and restart my laptop again. I've googled for ways to deal with it but none of them seem to work. Can someone please tell me how to fix it? I had no problems editing, importing and exporting from my old macbook white, and neither from my new macbook pro in the beginning but it's getting really frustrating that i have to reboot every single time and i feel like that would ruin the laptop as it's brand new.

Bengt W,
I appreciate your help.  Yes, all my photo and videos are originating from iPhoto '11 (that is how my camera imports).  I did exactly as you describe above and I was able to complete the movie and make a DVD that I needed for Christmas?   SO that was great.  And I greatly appreciate your time and efforts to make that happen.
However, we are back to the same problems and nothing seems to fix these movies now and they are still doing the same thing described above.  I am so discouraged that I just have not done anything more until recently.
Yesterday, iPhoto just disappeared.  I had iMovie open overnight.  The next day the iPhoto icon had a circle with a diagonal line and when I clicked on the icon "Damaged or corrupted ..." was the message.  I checked Finder and there was no longer an iPhoto application!   I reinstalled iPhoto from my DVD and did updates but only got to version 9.2.3.  Then I noted in the Apple store there is a version 9.4.2.  But I cannot get that version because it requires OS 10.7.5 but I have 10.6.8.  Similar problem with iMovie, I have version 9.0.4 and the newest is 9.0.8.
I have watched the "reviews" of these new OS, iPhoto, and iMovie.   They are getting hammered by users with a wide range of problems and low ratings.  If that were not the case I would just pay the money and see if upgrading the OS and these apps would help.  Frankly, I don't have any confidence it would.  I about to declare my two year experiment with Apple as a failure and that is very sad because I've invested hundreds of hours trying to make/keep their software working.   Ultimately the market place will decide but recent user feedback sure seems to point to some ugly outcomes.   Sorry for my rant but Apple should not impose on folks like you who are so giving to overcome their product shortcomings.

  • HELP...iMovie keeps freezing...

How big is too big for a file on the old iMovie...I'm working on a Team Highlight Tape at a High School and the banquet is only a few days away...I have a 35 minute video complete with transitions, music, everything...It's fantastic, only now it wont play properly and keeps freezing up...Everything has been rendered as best as I know...
Is it simply too large of a file with videos and music??? (I do have 76GB available according to the bottom of the iMovie Folder)
    HELP...Thank You...

I have had a similar problem and found the skipping, jerky playback (images, not audio) happened only with certain downloaded audio tracks (there must be code or something embedded in some music, even if it is downloaded from iTunes; this happened consistently with the group Hapa). My cue that this was going to happen was the length of time it took to download a selection from my iTunes library. Most tracks take less than a minute - but Hapa, for instance, took 4 or more! The music would play fine, but my video was erratic. All I had to do was change the music and everything would work fine.

  • My DVD imports into iMovie keep freezing in playback????

    Hi there-
I have imported a few DVDs into iMovie using Aimersoft DVD Ripper's full purchased version. They were working fine in playback mode, both down in the Event library and up in the project I was editing. But all of a sudden, when it gets to the clips chosen from my DVDs, it freezes on the frame before it and just stops. It won't play any video or audio from the DVDs. I converted them to "mp4 for iMovie" with Aimersoft and then dragged them into my events from my Finder window when they were imported to the computer. Am I doing something wrong? It's pretty urgent that I complete this project so any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!
    Thanks!
(I am using iMovie on OS X 10.7.4)

    One suggestion...
Right click (or control click) on one of your Event clips from the DVD and see if it offers to "Optimize Media". That should fix it.

    Hi,
Usually, when my vintage (as in, bought in 2006) MBP did that, it was because it was overheating, as you suspect. Now, you've got yourself a brand-new machine, and I'm sure there are many posts in this forum related to that issue.
There's one thing you can do (this one is two-fold, actually), and one you can't:
    1) Starting with the good news, you can install a prefpane called Fan Control (free, here: http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/23137/fan-control), that will let you control base speed and temp threshold for your fans (the ones on your Mac, I mean...); additionally, you can also install a widget called iStat Pro (free, here: http://www.islayer.com/apps/istatpro/), that you can invoke through Dashboard after freezing your game, so that it lets you know the current temperature your Mac is operating under.
    2) Now, for the (semi-) bad news: given your MBP probably has an "i-something" processor, you won't be able to install this Scandinavian gem that's called CoolBook, that lets you undervolt your logic board so as to prevent overheating. CoolBook currently doesn't support i-3 to i-7 processors because they don't rely on the same SMB sensors as the older Intel processors Apple installed in its machines prior to the current generation of MacBooks, MBP, MBA and the like. I said semi-bad news, because undervolting has obvious effects on your machine's response when under strain; if you are using processor- or memory-intensive applications, they might (scratch that, they will) be slowed down by an undervolted logic board. Video games being one.

  • My IMovie keeps freezing everytime i open it?

Everytime I click to open my iMovie, the application opens, and then after a couple second it freezes, and it says 'application not responding' when I right click on the icon to force quit it....
What is wrong? how can i fix this?
    Thank-you in advance!

Reinstalling is probably not the solution
    what version of iPhoto?
Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library

  • Imovie keep quitting when editing/do i need ilife 08

Ok I am doing a project and every other minute my imovie software keep quitting on me I am not sure if its because I am doing to much on it. However, this has been the 1st time I have use my imovie in over a year so I really don't quite understand.
Another problem I have is that I have a JVC Everio hard disk camcorder and when I try to upload my footage I can't. Instead all I receive is a MOD file and the video and audio is been separate, but when I plug it up to a pc I get everything and the camcorder is suppose to be compatible with mac becuase I can upload my photos and I got a disc for it but I had an issue with that also my mac wouldn't show it. Please can anyone give me any advice.
P.S. I went to a apple store and the sale rep told me I need ilife 08 and that ilife 06 is the reason I can't upload my footage is this true. I want to know before I buy it.

On the quitting problem, make sure that you have enough free disk space for iMovie to operate--at least 15GB and 20GB is better.
When iMovie starts acting up, there are a couple of routine maintenance things you should start with. First, close iMovie and trash the file named com.Apple.iMovie.plist located in User (your name)/Library/Preferences. iMovie will create another .plist file on relaunch. Before relaunching, do a permissions repair using the Utilities/Disk Utility app on your Mac. If those things don't work, and you are getting the unexpected quitting problem with other programs as well, then you might consider running a disk repair program like Disk Warrior.
Make sure that your iLife programs are updated to current versions.
Regarding the import problem, the Apple store guy is correct. iM6 is designed to import video from mini DV tape camcorders, not the HD hard disk type. That's why you are having trouble. iMovie 08, however, can import from the hard disk type of camcorder.

  • Imovie keeps freezing

I have an iMac early 2008  2GB running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3
My iMovie has worked great for years. Every time I go to make an edit I get the rainbow wheel and have to force quit, can't get anything done!! What do I do?

I wonder if this can help:
"Issue: iDVD '08 may unexpectedly quit when opened for the first time, after installation.
    Solution
Have your iLife '08 installation disc nearby before performing the following steps.
    1) Erase the following folders from your hard drive:
    * /Library/Application Support/iDVD/Themes/iDVD 1
    * /Library/Application Support/iDVD/Themes/iDVD 2
    * /Library/Application Support/iDVD/Themes/iDVD 3
    * /Library/Application Support/iDVD/Themes/iDVD 4
    2) Erase the following folder from your home directory:
    * ~/Library/Application Support/iDVD/Installed Themes
Note: The tilde (~) represents your home directory.
    3) Reopen iDVD '08.
    To Reinstall Themes 1-4:
    1) Open iDVD '08 and open a project.
    2) Click Themes.
    3) From the Themes drop-down menu, choose Old Themes.
    4) Select any of the faded-out theme thumbnails.
    5) Follow the on-screen instructions to install all of the themes originally erased via Software Update or the iLife '08 installation process"
Any UPDATES should be applied and probably FIRST.

Please give complete system and OS specs and version numbers. Are there elements like maps and such in the iMovie project? You can only send simple projects.

    Order of Troubleshooting...
    (1) Video Card Driver Problem
Does the computer use a NVIDIA GeForcce video card/graphics card? If so, stop and read the announcement at the top of this forum.
It describes the Premiere Elements 10 NVIDIA video card driver problem and gives the fix. For your convenience the following is a
copy/paste of the Announcement. Very important to rule in or out the known Premiere Elements 10 NVIDIA Video Card Driver issue.
Premiere Elements 10 NVIDIA Video Card Driver Roll Back
If you are a Premiere Elements 10 user whose Windows computer uses a NVIDIA GeForce video card and you are experiencing Premiere
Elements 10 display and/or unexplained program behavior, then your first line of troubleshooting needs to be rolling back the video card
driver version instead of assuring that it is up to date.
Since October 2013 to the present, there have been a growing number of reports about display and unexplained workflow glitches specific
to the Premiere Elements 10 user whose Windows computer has a NVIDIA GeForce video card. If this applies to you, then the “user to user”
remedy is to roll back the NVIDIA GeForce video card driver as far as is necessary to get rid of the problems. The typical driver roll back has
gone back as far as March – July 2013 in order to get a working Premiere Elements 10. Neither NVIDIA nor Adobe has taken any corrective
action in this regard to date, and none is expected moving forward.
Since October 2013, the following thread has tried to keep up with the Premiere Elements 10 NVIDIA reports

Older NVIDIA GeForce drivers can be found

A February 2014 overview of the situation as well as how to use the older NVIDIA GeForce drivers for the driver roll back can be found

    (2) "Movie" Properties
We need to know the properties of your source media, such as,
    Video compresson
    Audio compression
    Frame Size
    Frame Rate
    Interlaced or Progressive
    File Extension
    Pixel Aspect Ratio
We could direct you to video and audio properties readout programs, but let us see if we can get the information needed from knowing
the brand/model/settings for the camera that recorded the video.
Please check out these 2 important concerns, let us see what you have, and then we can decide what next. The video card driver matter may fix all.
Do not hesitate to ask if there is anything that you need help to understand what is needed.
    Thank you.

  • Keeps freezing, can't import anything from iPhoto. :(

Imovie keeps freezing everytime I scroll over the videos. So I got the new Imovie update and now I can't even import from Iphoto.
    Please help

    Hi
    Please try
    • Create a new User Account
    • Log into this
    • Re-try iMovie (You may need to add some Video-clips into Event's - as they and Projects follows the User Account)
If it now works OK - Then most probably the iMovie Pref. file in the old Account has gone corrupted (can easily be so by force quitting / Panic halt's and like so)

  • Captivate 7 keeps freezing while working/editing courses

    Hi,
Every 10 minutes or so Captivate 7 keeps freezing regularly (for about 20 seconds)! This happens while working on courses or editing slides (backend). I used Captivate 4-6 on the same machine without any problems..
Very seldom an error message appears which says that Captivate isn't able to communicate with Windows anymore!
    Any ideas?
    Many THX in advance;)
