Imovie keeps freezing once im in the middle of importing of a video camera!

I have a JVC Video Camera GZ - MG135,
I plug the USB into mac macbook, then open imovie then a message pops up says loading thumbnails or something like that, all is good until half way of the loading of the thumbnails and i have to force quit it.
Can anyone tell me why, this is happening, and it is the latest version of imovie.
So i can't think of anything why it is doing this...
By the way, i have imported from this camera before and has worked pefectly, and this complication has just happened.

Hi,
Usually, when my vintage (as in, bought in 2006) MBP did that, it was because it was overheating, as you suspect. Now, you've got yourself a brand-new machine, and I'm sure there are many posts in this forum related to that issue.
There's one thing you can do (this one is two-fold, actually), and one you can't:
1) Starting with the good news, you can install a prefpane called Fan Control (free, here: http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/23137/fan-control), that will let you control base speed and temp threshold for your fans (the ones on your Mac, I mean...); additionally, you can also install a widget called iStat Pro (free, here: http://www.islayer.com/apps/istatpro/), that you can invoke through Dashboard after freezing your game, so that it lets you know the current temperature your Mac is operating under.
2) Now, for the (semi-) bad news: given your MBP probably has an "i-something" processor, you won't be able to install this Scandinavian gem that's called CoolBook, that lets you undervolt your logic board so as to prevent overheating. CoolBook currently doesn't support i-3 to i-7 processors because they don't rely on the same SMB sensors as the older Intel processors Apple installed in its machines prior to the current generation of MacBooks, MBP, MBA and the like. I said semi-bad news, because undervolting has obvious effects on your machine's response when under strain; if you are using processor- or memory-intensive applications, they might (scratch that, they will) be slowed down by an undervolted logic board. Video games being one.

If you are using Safari then try clearing its cache : Settings > Safari > Clear Cache (and Clear History)
If that doesn't work then try closing Safari completely and then re-open it : from the home screen (i.e. not with Safari 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Safari app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
A third option is a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
Report any errors it found for Disk Repair, don't need the ones for Permissions Repair.
Try it again & see if anything changed, but have Activity Monitor open & Show All Processes & sorted on CPU%, also have Console open if we can... maybe not when switching, but we'll see.

  • IMovie keeps freezing on editing

I just got my macbook pro a week ago, brand new but for the past few days my iMovie keeps freezing up whenever i try to edit a video, or scroll through a clip. I can't use the option-command-escape to force quit because it doesn't work, and i can't click on any of the other apps or icons. The only way was to hold down the power button and restart my laptop. Even after restarting, it still does the same thing, freezes up in the middle of editing or scrolling, then i have to shut down and restart my laptop again. I've googled for ways to deal with it but none of them seem to work. Can someone please tell me how to fix it? I had no problems editing, importing and exporting from my old macbook white, and neither from my new macbook pro in the beginning but it's getting really frustrating that i have to reboot every single time and i feel like that would ruin the laptop as it's brand new.

    Bengt W,
I appreciate your help.  Yes, all my photo and videos are originating from iPhoto '11 (that is how my camera imports).  I did exactly as you describe above and I was able to complete the movie and make a DVD that I needed for Christmas?   SO that was great.  And I greatly appreciate your time and efforts to make that happen.
However, we are back to the same problems and nothing seems to fix these movies now and they are still doing the same thing described above.  I am so discouraged that I just have not done anything more until recently.
Yesterday, iPhoto just disappeared.  I had iMovie open overnight.  The next day the iPhoto icon had a circle with a diagonal line and when I clicked on the icon "Damaged or corrupted ..." was the message.  I checked Finder and there was no longer an iPhoto application!   I reinstalled iPhoto from my DVD and did updates but only got to version 9.2.3.  Then I noted in the Apple store there is a version 9.4.2.  But I cannot get that version because it requires OS 10.7.5 but I have 10.6.8.  Similar problem with iMovie, I have version 9.0.4 and the newest is 9.0.8.
I have watched the "reviews" of these new OS, iPhoto, and iMovie.   They are getting hammered by users with a wide range of problems and low ratings.  If that were not the case I would just pay the money and see if upgrading the OS and these apps would help.  Frankly, I don't have any confidence it would.  I about to declare my two year experiment with Apple as a failure and that is very sad because I've invested hundreds of hours trying to make/keep their software working.   Ultimately the market place will decide but recent user feedback sure seems to point to some ugly outcomes.   Sorry for my rant but Apple should not impose on folks like you who are so giving to overcome their product shortcomings.

You can try resetting your iPhone by simultaneously pressing and holding the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons until you see the Apple Logo. This can take up to 15 seconds so be patient and don't release the buttons until the logo appears.
Try again to see if the problem persists.

  • Macbook pro redina display keeps on telling me that the hard drive is full from Videos, and yet their is no videos, what can i do?

Macbook pro redina display keeps on telling me that the hard drive is full from Videos, and yet their is no videos, what can i do?

If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
              iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
    sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Ignore any other messages that appear in the Terminal window.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • HELP...iMovie keeps freezing...

How big is too big for a file on the old iMovie...I'm working on a Team Highlight Tape at a High School and the banquet is only a few days away...I have a 35 minute video complete with transitions, music, everything...It's fantastic, only now it wont play properly and keeps freezing up...Everything has been rendered as best as I know...
Is it simply too large of a file with videos and music??? (I do have 76GB available according to the bottom of the iMovie Folder)
    HELP...Thank You...

I have had a similar problem and found the skipping, jerky playback (images, not audio) happened only with certain downloaded audio tracks (there must be code or something embedded in some music, even if it is downloaded from iTunes; this happened consistently with the group Hapa). My cue that this was going to happen was the length of time it took to download a selection from my iTunes library. Most tracks take less than a minute - but Hapa, for instance, took 4 or more! The music would play fine, but my video was erratic. All I had to do was change the music and everything would work fine.

  • My iphone 4S 64gb factory unlocked keep freezing when running especially the music and photo app; and it keep rebooting itself after every total battery drain; i'm on ios 5.1

i upgraded to the ios 5.1; and i realized that each time i have a comple battery drain and the phone goes off; when i connect the iphone to charge; it keeps rebooting itself. And the phone freezes when in the middle of applications; i have to stop the app and start it several times before it works; i have an iphone 4S 64gb factory unlocked

At first drain the battery till the iPhone gets off for many times isnt really a good thing read this:
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/
after that I think the only way that will help you is restore the iPhone and the bad news are that you should do it without restore a backup after cause you're problem could be saved in the backup of the phone too so you must manually reinstall apps, preferences etc etc
