Implementing Oracle discoverer on OLTP databases

We have a database(520 tables) completely normalized minute level for ex:Person->Phone->PhoneType, Person->Email->EmailType.
That means completely normalized, in order generate a report you have to have more than 10 joins. Apart from these we need to link to value based hierarchy with that we need to achieve output with respect to geography.
Hierarchy is build on value based and data is maintained in the table in recursive manner.
1.My first question is, can I implement Oracle DS on OLTP databases.?
2.I guess Oracle DS will not support more than 6 or 7 joins because it encounters fan-trap situations, am I correct?
Pls. suggest/advice me. Thans in Advance.

Hi Krishna,
1) Yes you can (there are no laws against that).
But keep in mind that the OLTP database is intended/tuned to process transactions, not to do reporting on. So you might run into performance issues and/or modelling issues. Moreover, the "transactional users" migth expierence slower performance because of the "reporting users" and they won't like you for it...
2) There is no limit on the number of joins. And running into fantrap situations depends on the functional requirements and the way you set up the EUL for that, not (directly) on the number of joins.

I am a newbie to RDF. I am supposed to dio a PoC for a Oracle RDF. I donot know what is RDF [i have learnt it now], OWL, SPARQL etc...I need advice from experienced people about how to start with a simple applications etc...

Recently purchased Audit Vault and Database Firewall
My question is with Audit Vault.
All of the documentation says that i need Oracle Linux 5.8 as part of the installation. We do not have any servers now that support 5.8 currently. When I check the HCL for Oracle Linux 5.8 i see only 4 Oracle servers that support this version
Sun Server X2-4
Sun Server X2-8
Sunfire X2270 M2
Sunfire X4470
The only two servers that are currently offer for purchase by Oracle are the X2-4 and X2-8 which are way overkill both in power and price for this application.
The X2270 M2 would fit nicely, but is no longer offered for sale. In it place is the X3-2 which would fit nicely, but it listed as supporting Oracle Linux 5.8. Oracle Linux 5.9 is supported on the X3-2.
My question is will Oracle Linux 5.9 or newer install to support Audit Vault? The documentation specifies Linux 5.8. Is this flexible or not?

Oracle Discoverer 4i (portal db - oracle 8i) connectivity issue with 11g database

Hi All
We have oracle discoverer 4i with portal db (oracle 8i).
We connect to the external databases using db links in the portal db and the reports will use the db link to retrieve the data from views in the external databases.
External databases we were connecting is oracle 10g version and now we have upgraded these databases to 11g version.
Now i have a created a new db link to this 11g database and i have created a new EUL in portal to connect to this 11g database.
But when i try to create a report using the discoverer from this new EUL after login to the discoverer we get a "cannot connect to database" error.
We have all the necesscary privilege to the user and the new database link works perfectly fine. (when we try to query directly using SQL plus from portal database using this db link the query works perfectly fine).
Im not sure if this is a compatibility issue in connecting from oracle disc 4i to a 11g database.
Can any one advise if this is the case and if there is any workaround for this?

Are you saying you are having issues with a database link between 8i and 11g (pl post exact versions to 4 digits) ? If so, it should be expected as database links between these two versions are not supported. Is there a reason you cannot upgrade the portal database to at least 10gR2 ?

Oracle Discoverer 9i with 11g R2 Database

Hi everyone,
Currently our company is still using Oracle Discoverer 9i with Oracle 10g. It is working very fine without any problem. My question is, if we were to upgrade the Database from 10g to 11g R2, is it "technically" possible to continue using Oracle Discoverer 9i? We understands that Oracle Discoverer 9i is de-supported product but actually it is working fine with our current Database 10g.
If Oracle 11g R2 can be connected to Oracle Discoverer 9i, we would very much prefer to continue using Oracle Discoverer 9i even though it is de-supported.
Appreciate if someone can enlighten us.

Thank you very much for the advise. However, the problem here is my company will not upgrade to 11g if Discoverer 9i is not working. This is because they find so troublesome to re-create all the existing reports which is more than thousands of report...;-(.
Really appreciate the feedback from someone who has experience using oracle Discoverer 9i with 11gR2.

Do you have idea of setting the database name default for oracle discoverer 10g

I mean to say while login to discoverer 10g, it will ask for following options. In this Database should select the database name by default instead of any value
          User Name
          Password
          Database
          End User Layer

Database Aggregate Functions and Oracle Discoverer

Hello Guys.
There are a lot of aggregate function inside the database, unfortunatelly some of them are not directly accesible from Oracle Discoverer.
For example :
STATS_BINOMIAL_TEST
STATS_CROSSTAB
STATS_F_TEST
STATS_KS_TEST
STATS_MODE
STATS_MW_TEST
STATS_ONE_WAY_ANOVA
STATS_T_TEST_*
STATS_WSR_TEST
What is the best way to incorporate this kind of function in Oracle Discoverer ?

How to Obtain Detailed List of All Workbooks in Oracle Discoverer Database

Is it possible to create a query that would give me a list of all workbooks in my Oracle Discoverer Database that includes what tables were selected to create the query including any conditions?

Hi Becky,
Discoverer should be bundled with the EUL V5 Business area. I'm not sure which versions have it, so i'm hoping its all of them. It allows you to construct reports on the workbooks in the database, when they were last run etc. I'm not sure if you can report on database tables though.

Oracle apex outside the database

What risks or impacts do you think if I plan to implement APEX outside the production database. Basically having a separate database all together and apex running into that seperate database. But a lot of source data is in the production database. So looking into this situation, what are the risks and concerns you might think of?
My team is not comfortable implementing apex inside the production database.

It appears that 'they' have decided on a blanket rule through fear of breaking something (probably due to something having gone wrong once in the past). This is not the correct way to work. If they took the time to understand the technology that they are administering, they would see that an APEX installation should have pretty much zero impact on the production database.
We successfully run 3 APEX instances on the three production systems, each where the relevant data resides - 2 OLTP databases and a Data Warehouse.
Again, if they can come up with something specific rather than a sweeping statement and a suggestion to do it another way (using db links) with no reasoning or justification - it would be easier to allay their fears.

Oracle discoverer Administration - Business Areas

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to install the Oracle discoverer Administration edition for a user, but only with query/view rights on Business Areas ?.
The user should not be able do make changes , but only to view certain BA : eg : folder links, custom folder queries, properties etc.
Or is there another way of getting the information regarding the setup for a certain Business Area ?

Hi,
It depends what version of Discoverer you are using. If you are using a later version (10g) then you can give the user administration privilege but no privilege to change the EUL (e.g. format business area). Then when the user connects to Disco Administrator they get read only access to the EUL.
If you are using a previous version then you will have to either write a report off the EUL tables that gives them all the information they need (The Oracle provided EUL Definition Business gives most of this information), or implement your own read only constraints using database triggers.

Creation of a Custom Folder in Oracle Discoverer Administration Edition

Could anybody help me in solving this problem while creating a Custom Folder in Oracle Discoverer Administration Edition ?
My Requirement is :
I Connect to EUL_US/EUL_US@<HOST_STRING> under Oracle Discoverer Administration Edition.
I selected a Pre-Defined Business Area Eg. General Ledger
There i created a Custom Folder by Name Test Custom Folder
The Query which i used in my Custom Folder is
SELECT NAME FROM GL.GL_JE_BATCHES
When i Used this Query it says Table or view does not exist.
The Folder is getting created but without a Query.
I am not able to preceed further.
Any Help would be appreciated

Hi Nakul, you may be running into a problem with the sql for your custom folder. For some reason Discoverer Admin will allow you to create a custom folder with sql, but then if you change it and it has any advanced sql, i.e. grouping sets, analytic functions etc., you probably receive an error.
An option is to create a view using the same sql and create a folder from the database using this view.

Oracle Discoverer Administrator not installed with FMW 11.1.1.6 on windows 7 64 bit machine

Hi,
Recently I install the Oracle FMW 11.1.1.6 with Oracle Forms, Reports and Discoverer , 11g database and RCU successfully on windows7 64bit machine. I can able to access the Forms, Reports, Discoverer Plus and viewer thorugh URl successfully.
But I'm not able to see the Oracle Discoverer Adminstrator to create the EUL for creating the connection though the Oracle Discoverer Plus it's give me the error "You do not have access to any End User Layer tables".
I have also run the Repository Creation Utility against 11g R2 database which created a DEV_DISCOVERER schema.
I don't how to create the End User Layer tables.
These are the two URl I found after the installation for the discoverer:

Yup, i mean hyperion 11.1.2..
Now, the smartview has been successfully installed in my system. First, i tried to uninstall the my smartview and delete all registry that point to my smartview. and then i tried to re-install the smartview version 11.1.2, and now, it's work.
