Import from 8mm final cut x

I'm trying to import clips from a Hi8 camera into FCPX. I'm feeding the Hi8 tape from a Sony Handycam into a Sony HDR-FX1, which is connected to the computer with a firewire. When I Select import from camera, and then click import, the import window starts running a clock on the top left corner where it says "Importing" and the recording clock. When I click on Stop Import, and the Close Button, the import windows goes away and there is no clip in the chosen event.
Any ideas what the problem is?
Thanks
Carlos San Miguel

I haven't attempted Firewire capture with FCP X ... So I'll ask a dumb question.
Did you hit play on the deck?
Do you see video in FCP X when it's playing?
Are you sure your settings on teh FX1 are correct? For input and output?

  • Gaining better resolution from my final cut hd express films

Hey, can anyone help my on going conundrum once and for all. I've asked editors, all be it avid based, apple technicians and i've still yet to have a definite answer. I've been editing on my macbook using imovie 08 HD, which has been fairly adequate. However, I also have a g5 powermac with th final cut express HD software. I'm not too fussed about livetype and other beneficial FX that final cut express can offer, but what i do want is a better resolution for the finished product, as the final result tends to be a bit blocky. I used to work in TV as director and so have sat in on many an edits. I guess what i'm after is the amateur version of onlining, if this exists??? with AVID suites, in simple, this basically involves re-entering all the rushes, but i've got a funy feeling that it's not that simple sat at home, as the kit in an online suite, would set me back a couple of 100K!
I guess in short what i'm asking asking is A) will i gain a better resolution from using final cut HD express and B) how do you gain the highest possible resolution on either pieces of software. My camera is the Sony Z1 and i'm currently using iDVD.
If anyone can help I'd be hugely grateful!!

thanks for the hospitality! i only wish i'd used the forum earlier...it's nice to there are still decent people out there, willing to share their knowledge..!
my macbook is the 2GHz core duo, but not sure about the G5, it's circa 2004 (i know that's no real help!)
the 'blockyness' in imovie has been there from day 1 and always appears after i have burned the movie off in idvd or merely exported it to an mpeg4 file or likewise and on sequences where i have applied an effect, especially raised the exposure levels the 'blockyness; is almost lego like! but as a general rule of thumb, when editing the rushes look great. once they've been exported its as if they have become 2nd/3rd generation. I've imported stuff to final cut express 2 (recently got the upgrade software to HD express) the rushes look fine, but i'm presuming once i export the same will apply. The quicktime software i'm using is the 7.4.5 version, can this have an effect on the quality? and whether or not the movie is viewed back on the mac or through an external video monitor, the same quality is apparent. I am capturing straight from the camera, but not sure if im using cinemode, this isn't a feature i'm aware of in the menu of the Z1.
I'm no steve jobs, but I'm pretty sure the problem lies around the exporting stage of my movie making. for example, when with imovie, when i produce a title. the edges of the lettering are perfect. once it's been exported, the edges of all the letters are very soft. I've had a look at some other discussion group pages to see if anyone shares the same problem. somebody proposed changing the expert settings in imovie8 which i did but to no avail.
I have toast software that i have not yet used, would this make any difference?
Many thanks again for your guidance.

You can search the entire internet by putting that error message into google, see what other discussions appear.
With only the little information you've provided, I'd trash Compressor and download it again from the App Store.
You could share the timeline out to MPEG2 and then import that into iDVD, if you have it, or Toast.
Given an hour or three, someone with better suggestions will soon chime in.

  • Bizarre results importing imovie into final cut express?

I have filmed different interviews which were captured in imovie. I am now trying to import them into final cut express. But when I import one interview called, say, Gavin I get Karen's interview instead. The clip is labelled Gavin but the footsage is from a different interview. No matter who I import I get a completely different project and there is no rhyme nor reason to the footage that opens up.
Basically I get the wrong footage with every clip I open.
Please help before I end up in the loony bin!
    Exasperated,
    Clare

I bought Final cut express just after capturing all my files in imovie (having heard that it was supposed to be easier to cature and trim in imovie before sending the files to fce - is this what you have heard?). If it weren't for a solid week capturing and trimming 40 hours of film I would recapture in fce!!
I have even replaced the captured media within the scratch folder but still it opens the wrong files.
The files are labelled as the interviewees name. All the books say that you can import imovie projects into fce and then render and save as fce files.
I have tried various methods of importing, opening and even dragging a clip straight from imovie into the browser of fce - which works but opens an original untrimmed version rather than the short trimmed version and again it will be an interview of the wrong person.
I have since been turning the imovie files into .mov files and opening them in fce - this seems to work but hope there is no change to quality.
Would this be the way to go? I would so appreciate an answer!
    Thanks

    Hello everyone
I've recently messed up my Mac OS X Lion by deleting Aperture, but I need to get my data out of the computer. I've tried to repair it using DU, but it said I needed to backup all my data and reinstall the OS. How do I backup my data to an external drive?

Hope you guys can help me!

You need to back up 2 folders, Final Cut Events and Final Cut Projects which by default are located on your Movies Folder. You can always check by clicking on a clip inside Fianl Cut X and selecting Show in Finder in the contextual menu for the selected clip.

    Hi,
      1. Make sure you have the camera connected via Firewire (i link)
    2. The Camera is turned to "play" and, if you are capturing HDV,  in the camera menu, it is set to i link "OFF"

  • Importing issues with Final Cut Pro X. Green flash and twitches while play back

Hello, I'm having some importing issues with Final Cut Pro X and I can't find any solution whatsoever. Perhaps my importing settings are wrong?
Anyways, I've done a lot of recordings on eye TV and HD PVR with some videos that are about 3 hours long. I exported them into H.264 files, which turns them into mpeg-4 files with AAC audio. Then I import them into final cut pro X and I notice it takes a long time for them to render the videos and I notice that there are some green screens and twitches while I play through the video.
Here is a screenshot of the green screen that I'm talking about:

Could it be my 2 video graphics card that is causing this kind of issues? Or is there any solution to fix this?
In the past, I've used iMovie 09 and it worked out perfectly. However, the new iMovie 11 is terrible because it automatically optimzie my 3 hour long videos into making the importing process to (144 hours long to import). Is there any way to get iMovie 09 back or am I stuck on dealing with this Final Cut Pro X issues?

Filming on a Panisonic 24p camera but I imported it into final cut with a Sony HD camera. Will this mess up the quality of of my shots when I ad slow motion? I have noticed that the slow mo is a little chopy. PLEASE HELP!....

24p is captured with your standard "DV-NTSC" easy setup, whereas 24pA is captured with the "DV-NTSC 24p (23.98) Advanced Pulldown" easy setup. Correct me if I'm wrong I still have yet to work in 24pA.

  • I have a .mov file that is 59 gigs.  Is there a converter that can reduce the file size with minor resolution loss so I can import it into final cut express?

I have a .mov file that is 59 gigs.  Is there a converter that can reduce the file size with minor resolution loss so I can import it into final cut express?

Open the file in QuickTime Player. Then do Tools > Show Movie Inspector.  What does it say for Format and FPS?
At 59GB, I suspect you have either a 4 hour DV video or a 1+ hour video that was converted to Apple Intermediate Codec.   If it's either of those, you can import it directly into FCE provided you select the appropriate Easy Setup first.  Your clips have to match the properties of the Easy Setup you are using.
If it's neither DV or AIC then you need to convert it to one of those codecs.  (QuickTime/DV or QuickTime/AIC)  Many people in this forum rely on MPEG Streamclip (it's free and works great).

  • I need to remove a rig/wires from my final cut pro 7 project.  Can Apple Motion 4 remove wires/rig?  Are there any rig removal plugins for final cut pro?   Thanks!

I need to remove a rig/wires from my final cut pro 7 project.  Can Apple Motion 4 remove them?  If not can anyone recomment any plugins for Final Cut Pro or Motion that can remove them.  Thanks!!

In Motion 5 there is a plugin from CoreMelt called "SliceX" that does this.  But I don't know anything in Motion 4 that will do it.  You may get more help posting in the appropriate "Final Cut Studio" section of this forum.

  • Importing Metadata to Final Cut Server from Excel

I'm getting ready to implement Final Cut Sever on an extremely asset-heavy media project, and I'm in need of a way to batch-import custom metadata from an excel spreadsheet.
Does anyone know if Final Cut Server has way to do this out of the box?
Specifically, if I have a an excel doc where column A = file name (of all media files) and columns b-??? = custom metadata, how can bring that information into FCS so that I can search my assets by the custom metadata?
    DL

Yes it can be done but with the help of scripts.
If I have to do it today I would try to save those excel into a comma separated plain text files. Then I would build an script to read those columns of data from the text file (easy with awk command) and then write those fields to the FCS metadata. The tricky part is to link the file to the right asset inside final (you need to get the asset ID from the asset to be able to "setmd") The best way for me to do this (without accesing the database itself) is to have the name of the file (the plain text file) to be the same as the filename of the asset. This way you can then perform a "Write XML" from Final and you get an filename.xml where the Asset ID is located. After this is easy to build a custom XML file to fill with the excel metadata and perform a "setmd" to write back to FCS.
    Hope this help

  • Importing itunes into final cut express

I just bought an IMAC with Final Cut Express to do all my video editing of my kids activities. I used Pinnacle Studio on my old PC prior to this but it finally gave out. I downloaded some music CD's I had into itunes and then tried importing the music into FCE. This is not working. I have no problem adding it to my imovies but it will not work with FCE. The music format is m4a which I think is typical.
I went to You Tube and watch several tutorials from some of fellow FC users and still cannot get it to work. There must be something I have to set up in FCE to get this to work but I do not know what that is. I been looking around the program and have not been successful. Any help any of you can provide would be great. Thanks.. Ron

Hi Ron, and welcome to the FCE Forum !
You should convert the audio files to AIFF, 48KHz (aka 16-bit) stereo before importing them into FCE. Neither CDs nor iTunes songs are in that format. You can use iTunes to do the conversion.
With a new Mac and Snow Leopard you probably have iTunes9. Open Preferences, then go to General > Import Settings, then select AIFF and set Custom Settings as 48KHz, 16-bit, stereo. Save the settings. Then in your music library, select the song(s) you want to convert and do Advanced > Create AIFF version. (Note: the format you selected in Import Settings controls what the Advanced > Create menu option does.)
