Open the file in QuickTime Player. Then do Tools > Show Movie Inspector.  What does it say for Format and FPS?
At 59GB, I suspect you have either a 4 hour DV video or a 1+ hour video that was converted to Apple Intermediate Codec.   If it's either of those, you can import it directly into FCE provided you select the appropriate Easy Setup first.  Your clips have to match the properties of the Easy Setup you are using.
If it's neither DV or AIC then you need to convert it to one of those codecs.  (QuickTime/DV or QuickTime/AIC)  Many people in this forum rely on MPEG Streamclip (it's free and works great).

  • Dropping an audio track onto a PSD  file imported into Final Cut Express

I created a credits page for my video in Photoshop and then imported it into Final Cut Express (Version 1.0). I then duplicated part of an audio track from another sequence (My friend's father playing the organ), and dropped it onto the Photoshop credits sequence. It displayed and played nicely in Final Cut Express, but did not create an audio track which was visible within Final Cut Express. When I exported the sequence as a .mov file and then imported that into iDVD, it also displayed and played correctly in iDVD. But when I burned the DVD, there was no longer any audio with the credits. Any suggestions?

Thanks so much for your response. I selected and copied tracks A1 and A2 from one sequence and then pasted them into the credits (Photoshop) sequence. No audio tracks appeared in the Photoshop sequence, but we could hear the audio when we played the Photoshop sequence.
There was video associated with the original organ track, and we did not lock off the video when we dropped it into the Timeline, although there didn't seem to be any problem with the video. We did not Mixdown the audio either, although no audio tracks were displayed in the Photoshop sequence. I will try both of those things and see if it makes a difference. Thanks again.

  • Can't move a soundtrack file into Final Cut Express

I most likely doing something wrong. Who can give me directions for importing a Soundtrack file into Final Cut Express.

What I do Les is go to Share in Sound Track then ...Share to iTunes. Then I go to iTunes and drag it to the desk top then import via FC. There maybe is an easier way but I don't know it.

  • How to Encoding MPEG Movie to be able to import into Final Cut Express

I have MPEG Movie video clips that were sent to me. Title dvdMovie1chapter26.mpg (21.6MB) given to me from a PC taken on dvd video camera and compiled on CD disk. I would like to edit in Final Cut Express 4.0. I can not import in present form. Have used HandBrake and Toast 8 to encode. Divx and AVI to grainy. Have tried to make QuickTime Movie but 21.6 MB file went to 115.6 GB. Not sure how to set QuickTime options (Formats-Audio-Video Setting) in Toast 8 to encode with good quality this file so I can import into Final Cut Express. I will not have enough disk space to do all the video clips at 110 GBs or more per file. When I drag this file into Toast 8 with DVD-Video selected the file come into Toast as a Video-MPEG-2 720x480 29.97fps and Audio- Dolby Digital, Stereo 48000Hz File. Any Ideas?

How long is the movie? DV is 3.6MB/second. Handbrake is no good for this. I don't know if Toast will do it, but you can try MPEG Streamclip. You want to export to QuickTime using the DV NTSC codec at frame size of 720x480 and 29.97fps.

  • Importing video files into final cut express

I am a pro tools engineer and have just dove into final cut express 4.0 to do some simple video editing.I have a cannon camera with a sd card.I archived the video to a hard drive so I could free up the card.I can not find a single piece of evidence that explains how I can import those files from my hard drive.Everything that is mentioned is comming from a camera.I also tried by the book importing a Imovie to start simple. No luck.It shows up in the directory but there is no video.Needless to say I am lost!!!!

If you still have the original video on the memory card, put it back in the camcorder. (Don't try to copy it back from your Mac to the card, however.) Connect the camcorder to your Mac via USB and try capturing the video via FCE's Log & Transfer function.
In most cases when people merely copy video files from a camcorder's memory stick or hard drive (usually AVCHD video) to the Mac desktop or a folder, they don't copy the full directory structure on the card, which is essential. Is that what you did when you 'archived' the video? Can you provide more specific info?

  • Correct way of importing an iMovie 6 movie into Final Cut Express?

    Hi,
Many thanks in advance for your attention.
Any correct way to import an iMovie 6 HD movie into Final Cut Express for further editing?
    I tried.
    1. I Exported the iMovie, at Full Quality and it made a Quicktime version of that movie.
    2. I then Imported this Quicktime version into Final Cut Express.
    3. The audio was smooth, but at regular intervals, the video freezes for a second (and then moves on).
    4. The movie plays smoothly back in its original iMovie incarnation and in its Quicktime incarnation. Only in Final Cut Express is there this intermittent freezing. Stop and start.
    5. I have Final Cut Express 3.5.1 and iMovie 6 HD.
    Thank you,
    - Ross

"Full Quality" QuickTime export from iMovie gives you a DV stream which will need rendering in FCE. Rather than "Full Quality," choose "Expert Settings," and then the following:
    Video
    DV-DVCPRO - NTSC (assuming you're in USA)
    Sound
    48kHz
    16-bit

  • Importing Files into Final Cut Express

I have a technical issue that I hope someone can assist me with...
I recieved 2 harddrives full of video clips that were shot in HD from a video production house. Here is the content on the drives: CARD 1 (folder), inside this folder there are 2 items (CONTENTS & LASTCLIP.txt) in the CONTENT folder are the following folders : AUDIO, CLIP, ICON, PROXY, VIDEO, and VOICE.
My question/dilemma: Can I import these clips into Final Cut Express to edit? I have an older version of Final Cut HD that won't work with these files.
Any and all input will be greatly appreciated.

HELP ! Anybody, please help !
As you can probably guess. I've reached the limit of my "expertise" with your files ....... ".XML" sounds familiar but you will have to hang around for someone else to tell you whether and how they can be used.
One thing I am sure about (I think!) is that the latest version of FCE will be no better than the older one you have.

  • Can i export an Imovie project with special effects as a quick time movie then import into final cut express keeping the special effects?

Hi, Can i export an Imovie project with special effects as a quick time movie then import into final cut express keeping the special effects?

Absolutely.  Go to File->Export->QuickTime Movie (do NOT use QuickTime Conversion).  Make sure you check the Self-Contained box.  The export will be an exact copy of your Sequence, complete with any filters or other effects you've added.  Import the self-contained movie back into the project (or another project) if needed.

  • Saving files and copying data into final cut express

I have read that you can create duplicate copies of your I movie project and work between them so ou can make changes but always have a master file.
but I have not been able to figure out how to do that. And after I am finishend with my project I can export it to final cut express for some additional editing and video layering is that true? can I do the sme with final cut pro or just final cut express? Also is there any quality loss in this method? Thanks in advance

    Hi tnt,
you write on a piece of paper; you copy that paper; you continue to write on the first one... how does the copy "know", what you've written..???
sorry, who gave you that advice of copying projects? backup frequently, yepp, that makes sense with ANY data on a computer... but with a backup you allways go back in time.....
FCE is able to open iMovie project directly (don't know about FCP, don't own, $$$); BUT then the file structure is broken, you can NOT re-import project to iM, BUT the movie...
you know the difference? a movie is one single block, a project makes it possible to edit transitions, to edit titles etc...
for sure, you can export and import from and to iM and FCE/P without loss of quality as long as you stay with "dv stream" (native file format of both/all three apps). I'm, doing this a lot, using iM for editing and FCE "just" for "special effects", advanced titles etc.-
    hope I could be helpful

  • Trouble importing .mov into Final Cut Express

I have a number of video clips given to me by a client in Italy and provided as .mov files. I can view them in Quicktime with no problem. I want to edit them. I have Final Cut Express 4 and when I import the files, I can see the file listed, I can hear the audio play but I can't see the video. Is this a conversion problem of some sort? Do I need to convert it first into a different format — if so, what format and what conversion software do you recommend (I tried a couple of free ones to no avail).
Thanks for any help you can provide!

    Hi everybody,
I've solved the problem by installing Final Cut 6 (latest version): when drag and drop the clip, the settings instantly suit to the clip properties (making rendering un-necessary).
The images are still stretched but, when I deselect "Show as Sq. Pixel" from the first of those 3 menus on the canvas display, images suddenly appear exactly as I wanted (even the images quality is exactly the same as the source).
Now the problem is Compressor (still latest version):
I've tried to convert with a lot of presets, but images are still vertically stretched and images are not as clear and sharp as the source.
    Which is the right preset??
    Thank you!

  • Max AVI file size into Final Cut Express?

I am a complete newcomer to mac and FC - About to begin loading all my old video onto disk. If I stream 90 min of Hi8 into one AVI file it will be easiest but will the file be too large for FC Exp - is there a file size limit or not - I am assuming not.

Sorry, simply my old Adobe Premier/Windows background - simply wanted to know whether there was any file size limit in FC however I have just captured and imported a complete tape so clearly not.

  • When rotoscoping, how do I delete the background of a video so that when I import it into final cut, the background is transparent and not black or white?

    Hello there,
I am new to after effects.
I'm currently working on some footage of a face talking. I have used the rotobrush to single out just the lips moving and have deleted the background. However, when I delete the background it automatically changes the background to a solid black.
The effect i'm looking for is more something of the effect of a PNG in photoshop - no background so that when it is imported into a movie, the lips with be free standing over other footage so that the oner footage will be shown behind the moving image of the lips..
I have looked at multiple tutorials and threads and found nothing that helps with my problem - if there is one, I apologise, I have just spent so long looking and thought here was the best place to come.
If anyone can give me any advice it would be very greatly appreciated - Thankyou!
    BJH

First, check to make sure you actually HAVE transparency by doing one of three things: change the comp's background to something other than black, click on the button at the bottom of the comp window to view the alpha channel, or click the button on the bottom of the comp window to reveal the familiar Photoshop checkerboard background.
Next, select a codec that supports alpha channels -- in Quicktime-Land, that would be Animation, PNG or Prores 4444.  For FCP, use ProRes if you can.
After that add the comp to the AE Render Queue.  In the output module, select RGB+Alpha, Millions (or trillions) Of Colors +, and Straight, i.e. not premultiplied.  If you absolutely MUST have audio (I personally have little use for it), check the appropriate  check box.
Finally, save the project and hit the render button.  DO NOT save the project again after rendering; instead, go file>Revert.  That way, if you have one of those Homer Simpson "DOH!" moments where you realize you made a mistake, you simply delete the rendered file, make corrections, and you're all set to re-render.

  • How do you import mpeg2 files into final cut express?

I have recently show my sons christening, and relied on a friend to do ths shooting. One of the tapes unfortunatley has broken, and I have had a second party transfer this footage onto DVD for me. He is also sending the footage through as an MPEG 2 file. Is there anything I can do with this using FCPE?

Convert the DVD's VOB files into a format that works natively in FCE.  For DVD footage (which is SD), use MPEG Streamclip to do the converting.  Here's a tutorial on using MPEG Streamclip: http://www.secondchairvideo.com/?p=739
MPEG Streamclip is freeware, but you may need to purchase the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component from Apple if you don't have it already.

  • Can I import MTS files into Final Cut Express?

It seems like FCE only reads MOV and MP4 files, and sometimes it doesn't even read those for me. Is there no easy way to import and edit MTS video files?

If the source files are HD, then use Clipwrap:
    http://www.divergentmedia.com/clipwrap
and convert the source files to Apple Intermediate Codec.
