Import Photoshop Shape/Mask To Motion?

Hi,
Is there a way to do this? I created a layered shape in PS for use in DVDSP, per manual. It looks like I want it to and behaves correctly. I want to use this same shape in Motion as a mask with the existing shape layer intact (a "border", if you will). My aim is to grow/shrink this shape and a video inside the border simultaneously.
Any help much appreciated!

You want an rectangular video inside an elipse - that is to trim the outside of a rectangle and place it in an oval frame? Just select the image, and the oval mask tool (click and hold on the rectangular mask and select the oval) and draw a rectangular...

  • Importing Photoshop layered files to Motion

I'm having issues importing Photoshop layered files to Motion. When the file appears in the viewer, text or the shapes in the Photoshop file have changed colors. It's almost like motion doesn't recognize a gradient color in the text or shape. I've tried rasterizing the layer but it didn't help. Any suggestions?

hopefully above fixed that! not to hijack, but group layer labels don't seem to imported properly into apple products. is this due to the apple-adobe wars? i am anal so all my photoshop layers are grouped with some organization, but in motion it looks like a mess. thx,

  • Imported Photoshop Layers change in Motion after re-saving PSD file

Curious if anyone has seen this issue:
I have a multi-layered Photoshop CS drawing that I import (All Layers) into Motion to animate. No problem.
If I make a change to the original Photoshop PSD file, the Motion layers are updated incorrectly. The layers are swapped and their locations move. The only fix I have is to completely re-import the file and start from scratch.
I've also seen the Motion layers change slightly if I just save the PSD file again without changes. They are minor, but still apparent.
    Anyone, anyone?
    Dual 2GHz G5 : 3GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   FCP5

Lesson learned. Do you know, is the a problem only if PS and Motion are open at the same time?
I like the fact that Motion attempts to update, but the fact it does it wrong is a bummer. I suppose if this only happens when the two programs are open one could simply close motion, change one or two layers in photoshop, and import only those layer into Motion upon re-opening. Not a big deal.
I may try and see what happens... with a small project without a deadline...

  • TS3811 When importing Photoshop layers into a motion project

if I change position of some elements they are cropped to the bounding box of the first layer imported.  If I try to manipulate/animate elements outside this box they are cut off at the bounding box edge.

Layered PSD are set as fixed resolution when imported, this is why things are cropped. Select the group, go to the Inspector, Group Properties and turn off fixed resolution.

  • Importing Photoshop Files

I'm attemting to import photoshop files into a Motion project as I have done in the past. But now, for some reason, when I do so now, instead of my image I get a graphic imported that is all white and has the text "This layered Photoshop file was not saved with a composite image" in about six different languages. I've tried flattening the image first, but that doesn't seem to help.
I would appreciate any help with this if anyone else has been able to overcome it. I'm running Motion 2.0.1 on a G5 with 2GB RAM.
    Thanks.

    josh,
did you ever find a solution to this issue of yours? i just encountered it and it's caused by a preference setting in photoshop meant to maximize file compatibility. i opened the same layered .psd in after effects with no issue which wasn't surprising. searched here and saw your post. then, which i should have done immediately, i searched the photoshop manual and found the solution. search is always my friend.
    from the photoshop manual:
--To maximize compatibility with previous versions of Photoshop and with other applications (Photoshop):
    Do one of the following:
In Windows, choose Edit > Preferences > File Handling.
In Mac OS, choose Photoshop > Preferences > File Handling.
Choose Always from the Maximize PSD File Compatibility menu. This saves a composite (flattened) image along with the layers of your document.

  • Needed:  Script for importing Photoshop layers, converting to shape layers

I've uncovered what seems to be a "bug" in After Effects CS5.  When I import photoshop artwork in layers, and then try to apply effects to an individual layer, such as a color change, a drop shadow, or pretty much anything including puppets, when I later try to render the movie, it crashes.
My solution has been to laborously go through and convert any layer where I need to apply effects into an AE shape layer, copy the mask over, etc.  Its not much fun, but it does solve the bug.
I know this could be done with a script, but I don't have the chops or the time to write it.
Has anybody else written such a script?
    In essence, it needs to:
    1.  import a Photoshop file in layers.
    2.  select each layer in the file and
    3. create an AE layer
4.copy the mask from the PS layer and
    5. paste it onto the AE layer.
    6. keeping the same registration and
    7. keeping the color of the PS layer.
Easy, huh?  For somebody who knows what they're doing, which doesn't include me.....
    :<)McFrisco

Wouldn't it be just more efficient if you provided one of your crashing PSDs along with the AE project so we can check and verify? If you contact me off-forum I can assure you confidentiality and even provide you with an upload location. I even looked up your otehr threads, but I feel we never really reached a point where we could make out something definite, so rather than trying to fix things the hard way, it may make more sense to let someone take a look. This may be something trivial, after all and be perfectly fixable by doing something differently...

  • How to SHAPE(mask) tween in Photoshop?

    Hello,
please tell me how to SHAPE (mask, path) TWEEN in Photoshop?
Flash is capable of Shape Tweening but does not have Photoshops tools or esp. Channel Operations for precise mask edits.
    Hope to talk soon,
    Jeff

Thats really! good news and tips, much appreciated.
The last things i hope to ask before going to AE Forum is:
    3) does AE have or can be made to perform PS or Flash distort, skew, warp etc. transformations?, (these save incomparable time in path editing rather than AE's limited transforms and manual point and tangent realignments)
    4) when shape(mask) tweening in AE is it capable of what Flash calls ease-in/out, or what Illustrator and CorelDRAW calls "speed"or "acceleration" respectivly?
All your help is most the productive, thanks for your patience and i hope i've not asked too much. The rest i'll get at AE Forum and else where.
    big fan,
    Jeff

  • Photoshop "Shapes Layers" in flash

    Hi ,
    I’m using flash cs3 ,
When importing Photoshop file , all the “shape
layers” are being converted into a mask in flash , why is
that? And how can I turn all those “layer shapes” to a
    vector shape in flash?
    Thanks
    S

When you say "Then Fade out," it doesn't exactly sound like
    scrolling.
Does the user do something to make the text scroll up/down or
    does the text
merely scroll without user interaction and the fade out at
    its completion?

  • How do I automate global vector shape, mask & path transfers to Illustrator?

Using: WIN7, Adobe CS5, PS, AI (but others may appreciate answers for CS6, etc.)
When I need to move a project from  Photoshop to Illustrator, I need an automated way to prep shape and vector mask items for export--preferably preserving the structure and layout that already exists as layer names and order, character and paragraph settings, and of course global registration. My scripting is limited to recording actions, so I need to find an existing script or get coached on this. Any recommendations?
I have googled and waded through numerous forum posts trying to research this on my own, so I know about the ability to export my path collection, but that's usually inapplicable in reality. It only deals with vectors from the Paths pallette. In Photoshop, I use the Paths pallet to store master and WIP paths, but all the working paths are either shapes or vector masks--or active type layers. Often enough that it's become an issue, I'll need to move the whole project to Illustrator. Obviously, the process has issues; I'm not expecting the rastor layers or Photoshop styles to carry over, but I see no reason why I can't capture text, shape and vector mask elements.
They all have a vector component, but simply opening a PSD in Illustrator flattens (badly) the layers. I select the "Convert Layers as Objects" but have yet to see it extract editable text. I'm not sure if it even attempts to do anything with vector shapes or masks. I've got a process for moving a project one element at a time, using registration marks--but this requires turning text into shapes most of the time, especially if I am trying to preserve kerning and leading crucial to the layout. Maybe I just have not found the right info, and there is a way to transfer editable text without losing character and paragraph settings. I'd love to hear about it.
For now, I'd be happy to stop wasting time doing a ton of conversions and renaming by hand, just so I can preserve the work I've already invested.
One suggestion, posted under a multiple path export question, was to use scripting... but no one explored or explained how to go about it. I'm not asking for the impossible, however. I simply need help working out my own solution: if there is no application method for transferring the elements, try to script a method to prep those elements for export. Before I even attempt to reinvent someone's wheel, I am putting the question out there:
Does anyone know of a solution that already exists?
I appreciate hearing your advice and thank you for giving this some attention!
edit:  I kept at it and managed to open my current project PSD in AI with text and shape/mask vectors successfully--not as cleanly as I'd hoped but the relative positioning of things was acceptable. I am still interested in hearing people's suggestions on better ways to transfer work from one tool to the other, though. I know this is going to come up for me again and again...
    Thanks!

    Hi,
It sounds like you have gotten this working for your project, but you might look at this thread for a few different solutions.  http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1045757

  • How to create a shape/mask with a hole in it?

In graphics illustration applications, it's common to support boolean operations on shapes and paths, like subtracting one object from another resulting in a compound path (like a group of sub-paths).  This provides the ability to create shapes with "holes" in them where background content can show through.  Is it possible to do this with two (or more) shapes (or masks) in Motion 5?  For example, if I draw a rectangle shape and a smaller circle shape inset within the rectangle, to have the circle as a "hole" in the rectangle so that as the rectangle passes in front of other objects they show through the hole?  If the answer is yes this can be done, can you please descibe how?  Thanks!

It's possible to create a lot of sophisticated masking effects in Motion and there are two different ways that can be used in combination or separately (depending on the type of object being masked -- some objects won't allow shape masks, but almost all objects allow Image Masks.)
To set up what's going on below: the bottom layer is a Clouds generator. On top of it is a Spirals generator.
The region in the center where the '8' figure is starts as a rectangle to which 4 circle shape masks are added. The Shape Mask tool is in the one to the right of the Text ( 'T' icon) tool in the toolbar at the bottom of the Motion window. When an "eligible" layer is selected in the Layers List its options will be selectable, otherwise it will stay dimmed.
The first two circle masks added to the Rectangle are arranged one above the other (visually) and their Mask Blend Mode is set to Intersect and the Invert Mask options are checked for both. Two more circle masks are drawn for the same rectangle shape and placed to form the "holes" for the figure 8. Their Mask Blend Modes are set for Add.
The region of the Spirals that form the outer border is another Rectangle Shape drawn to form the bounds. To that Rectangle I added an Image Mask (right click on the Layer and select Add Image Mask.) To the Image Mask sub-layer I dragged the original rectangle containing the 4 circle masks.
Finally to the Spirals generator layer I added an Image Mask and dragged the second rectangle on the that sublayer.
When objects are added to an Image Mask, Motion will automatically turn off those layers from being visible in the canvas.
When working with masks, especially several levels of masking, sometimes you have to think in opposites. For instance, originally, the inner rectangle is solid and the figure 8 is the cutout. When added to the second rectangle, the "state" is reversed. Where you see the spiral are the solid portions of the final composite mask. If you select the Invert Mask option of the Spirals Image Mask, the entire thing "flips" (and the spirals would replace the clouds and vice versa).
Shape Masks have four available Blend Modes (Add, Subract, Replace and Intersect). Shape Masks are "all or nothing" cutouts (with exception of feathering).
Image Masks use Alpha, Individual Color channels (R,G, or B) or Luma to determine transparency. Image Masks can also use bezier shapes as sources, making almost the same as Shape Masks in this respect, except that Fill Opacity can be used to vary opacity within masked areas.

  • Importing Photoshop layers in Flash

    Hi,
I tried to import photoshop layers in flash.
But it is coming as bitmap.
Is there any way to bring the photoshop layers as shapes with good flash quality.
    Thanks for your time.

Unfortunately I don't think this can be done - but maybe I am wrong. But I don't think there is a way.
Perhaps see if there's any options through scripting.

If you had Illustrator you could take advantage of smart objects.
Has been awhile since I worked in Corel (so do not remeber if Corel had clipboard settings whcih need adjusuting), but do remember copying a path, getting that into Phothshop as shape layer for part of the artowrk in a trade show poster.

  • Import Custom Shapes into Pages

    Hi!
I am not as glad with the "onboard" shapes of pages and want to import some custom shapes (from Inkscape or Neooffice) into Pages.
It's no Problem with Bitmaps. But I just can't get vector graphics to get imported into pages.
Is there an easy way to get things done? A simple SVG -> Pages Converter might do the job as well.
    Cheers,
    Fox

    Hi,
thanks for the answer. Of course, I tried that, and it works (kind of). But the shapes aren't imported as paths, so I can't re-edit them in Pages. So, everything has to be done in Neo/Openoffice - or Inkscape, and this means I could also import them as Bitmaps. No real difference.
Example: I want to import a shape and then change the appearance of the stroke - not possible. Or to Mask a Photo with my custom Object - not possible.
    Thanks nevertheless,
    Fox
