Importing a high-definition clip produces a timeline much longer than the video

I have begun importing high-definition clips in MOV format into my Premier CS4.  I use a hard-disk based video recorder ( a DTE technology FS-100) whichbreaks the video up into 2GB clips each with a duration of 2 minutes, 18 seconds. and 8 frames (2:18.8).  However, Premier thinks that the clip is about 37 minutes long.  When I play the clip in the editor, the video freezes and the sound stops at 2:18.8 with the remaining ~35 minutes showing the same frame.
I can get around this by manually cutting each clip down to 2:18.8, but I shouldn't have to do this.  By the way, when I import standard definition video from the same recorder I don't have this problem; Premier determines the correct length of the clip.
Any ideas of what is going on and how to correct?
Thanks!

I thought it was a little odd though as you can re-time the clip through the properties menu of the clip and the audio links with it and slows down. I had jsut hoped the same would apply when I just tried using a smoother effect on it.
Thanks for your help anyway.

  • Importing a high definition clip, fps 25, from Koyote screen capture, becomes bad in Elements

    Hi,
I am running Adobe Elements 11 and have one irritating problem. I make a perfect on screen recording but when I import the .avi to elements some things just become poor. For example when I scroll a window while recording it just becomes a weird buzz and laggy. The raw file is flawless but when imported this happens.
    Thankful for any help,

You should check that the Project settings match the clip settings before editing them to the Timeline.
Only newly created Projects will change not existing ones by adjusting the Project settings.
If, for example, you have a Project set to NTSC DV you can only end up in trouble if the clips are PAL 1920 x 1080i.

  • Importing in high definition tape in 1080i / 480i/widescreen dv

Using Imovie 6HD importing a high definition tape - when i imported in dv - letterboxing (don't want that) came on - what is the difference of importing in the other settings??
    1080i
    480i
    widescreen dv
please advice need to import a few tapes and not sure how to set imovie.
    thanks,

if you arer importing and HD is not on in IM then you have DV lock set to "on" in your videocam thus you're not importing in HD. LtrBx happens to me only when I import into DV widescreen, which is not HD. Don't do 480i . . . Just experiment with each to see how it goes. Testing yourself is the best way to learn.

    Hi Stephen, thanx...
Yes, we are talking about FCP X...this is the thing:
I worked on a project a few days ago and went to share - export movie.
Today, i opened the FCP again, to make some changes, and when i enter to the project, it shows me as one big clip.....i dont see it says compound clip....and i tried anyways pressing break appart clips...but nothing....could it be that i made it compound before exporting it..? if so how can i recover the un-compound version >?
I tried to import the saved .mov file, but it opens the same....as one long clip...

  • VOB converted to AVI audio files imported to premiere play in different order than the video files

    Hello there,
I extracted the VOB files from a burned dvd created with Adobe Premiere pro 1.5, I converted the files into AVI files, then I imported it to Premiere CS4. The video sequence on the timeline plays in the correct order but a very fast speed, and the audio sequence plays all the individual clips in a random order, not in the order that they were originally edited in.
What did I do wrong while importing or converting?
    Elio38

    Hi Elio,
What program, or utility did you use to convert the .vob files to .avi, and what was your target codec?  I typically use SUPER Converter, which is free and very versatile, to convert program stream .vob files to a useable format that PPCS4 is compatible with. You can also directly import and edit a .vob file from a DVD in PPCS4 by simply changing the file extension to .mpg. However, doing so will eliminate the audio channel from the video clip in PPCS4.
I was able to recreate what I believe was your issue when I tried converting a .vob file to an .avi file, regardless of what codec I used.  I had no issues what so ever when converting the .vob file to a .mov file using the DV codec, for example.  It could be a bug with PPCS4 because the same .avi file I created with the DV codec played back fine in WMPlayer, and VLC, but played back almost in slow motion in PPCS4.  It might be advantageous for you in the meantime to re-convert the .vob files to .mov files and just choose the standard DV codec.
Remember, you are trying to edit files that are intended for delivery and that were not originally designed to be edited.  Attempting to edit inter-frame formats such as MPEG-2, MPEG-4, FLV, etc...has caused many a headache and even today, are not the easiest to work with.

  • My clips keep going black- I can hear the video but not see the clip.  New user for Elements 8 Premi

I am making a movie and now
the clips are all black but i can hear the video.  Using the timeline, I was able to move frames up to video one.  Where should they all be?  In the sceneline when I try to delet the black frames it just moves the black further along the line.
    Thanks

Rendering the Timeline will basically write an AVI file, that will be used for the best possible playback of that Timeline.
With much material, the Video is in GOP (Group of Pictures) format, and for frame-accurate editing, one needs full I-frame format. This ARTICLE will give some background.
When editing GOP structure material, one can Cut within the GOP structure, and then there is no I-frame to reference, so the "difference" frames do not have all of the necessary info. Usually, the program will internally convert to I-frame for editing, but there are times that this does not work perfectly, so Rendering will essentially do that conversion for you.
In some cases, Rendering is not really necessary, and I do many Projects (mostly DV-AVI material), where I never Render. Other times, I might well Render a particular area dozens of times, to see the best display in playback.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Once Audio/Video has been merged, I can no longer access the video's source setting on some clips

    Hi.
Shot Scarlett, doing a pass in RedCineX, and bam, I can no longer reload the RMD files on some of the clips in premiere.
In the timeline, if I right click the video, "source settings" is clickable, but doesn't do anything.
If I reveal the merged file in the project, the "source settings" option is greyed out.
If I click the original r3d file in the project, I CAN access source settings, but reloading the RMD does not modify the merged clip.
What's really bothersom is that this is only affecting about 1/2 my merged clips, all created at the same time.
    I've unlinked, relinked....I've rain danced...I've swore...nothing works....any help?

I cannot help with this problem (not having any RED media myself), but if your media was shot at true 24 fps (not 23.976), I could use another pair of eyes on a particular issue that might also affect you.

  • My video clips no longer show the video, just audio.

I have a video with stills and video.  After a few changes (I know I changed the duration length of the stills and I was also trying to make sure that everything fit to the frame instead of being cropped) now the movie plays the audio portion of the clip but instead of playing the video it shows nearby still or a frame from a later video.  Help!  I don't want to have to start all over again!

  • Why is my exported file 2 seconds longer than the project in my timeline

I am using a Mac, latest OSX. I need my project to run at exactly 30minutes. In the timeline my project is marked at exactly 30 minutes from the in/out points. When I export the media with Premier Pro I end up with a final product which is 30 minutes and 2 seconds long. Where are these two extra seconds coming from? I had my source range set for Sequence in/out points and this read as 30 miutes exactly, and the predicted output time for the final export read as 30 minutes exactly as well. This still added two extra seconds so I then set the source range to custom and typed in 30minutes exactly and it is STILL giving me 2 extra seconds. What is going on here?
Export settings summary reads as follows
    1920x1080 (1.0)
    23.976 fps
    Progressive
    00:30:00:00
    VBR
    1 pass
    Target 0.19 Mbps
    Max 0.19 Mbps
    AAC
    320 kbps
    48 kHz
    Stereo

Because within Premiere Pro, your are reading the total running time based on Non-drop frame timecode.
Depending on which version of Quicktime you are using you can click on the counter and change the value of the numbers displayed:
where Standard is real time. If you switch it Non Drop, you'll see it will display the length (incorrectly) as 30 minutes.
If you are using Quicktime 10 I believe you can only display real time.
This is all because your video is running at 23.976 frames per second. That means it is running slightly slower than real time, which would be true 24fps. Over the period of 30 minutes, this slow frame playback is making the show run longer by two seconds.
This why in NTSC 29.97 and 59.94 video there is drop and non-drop timecode. Drop frame timecode drops timecode numbers over time to compensate for the difference that the video rate is slightly slower than real time.
In drop frame, when you have a duration of 30 minutes, it coresponds to real time 30 minutes.
In non-drop timecode, when you have a duration indicating  30 minutes  it will actually take slightly longer to playout.
There is not a standard for 24fps drop frame timecode, it is always non-drop. You can't switch to drop frame timecode if your sequence frame rate is 23.976 or 24fps.
    The math:
If you had 30 minutes of footage running at 24 fps - 24fps X 60 = 1440 frames in a minute, 1440 x 30 = 43200 frames in the show. (So non-drop TC, which counts the frames without regard to the true playback rate, displays a duration of 30 minutes)
But since the video, is, in fact, running slightly slower, at 23.976, those 43200 frames take longer to play out by .024 frame per second of real time.  So 43200  (your total show amount of frames) divided by 23.976 (the playout per second frame rate) = 1801.801802 seconds, which is 30 minutes, 1.8 seconds.
Avid used to ( and maybe still does) come with a calculator to make this conversion and to help make the frame count = the desired running time.
It should be noted that within commercial production, with durations of 30 or 60 seconds, this whole mess is less apparent. It only shows up when you work with program length material. This is why they invented drop frame timecode.
A solution is to tighten up the edit by 1.8 seconds over 30 minutes

  • Import volume much lower than the (clean) CD playback

I had a quick search, and apologise if this has been bashed before...
I'm importing a CD (St Germain - Tourist, in case you were interested). When playing back the CD version, and then the ACC ripped track, the volume is far far lower, its infuriating! Changing the bit rate makes no difference.
The CD signal is clean and crisp, there is no reason for itunes to crank it down... is there any way to fix this on the import? Changing the levels in 'get info' afterwards doesn't make much difference, its still far lower than the original.
    thanks,
    tom

    The first things I would do are;
    1. Go to iTunes > Preferences > Playback, and disable both Sound Enhancer and Sound Check.
    2. Turn off the EQ (accessed by clicking the Equalizer button in the lower right corner of the iTunes window).

  • Movie goes on longer than the clips, help!

I moved around a title that i have at the end of the movie and now the total time of the movie is longer than any of the video/audio clips in it. All the clips end at about 5 minutes but the movie goes on for about 5:45, how do i fix this so i can share the movie nicely?
    Thanks.

  • If a video is in high definition, does it take up more space than it would in standard definition

I have freed enough space to hold a standard definition version of the series that I want to buy, but I wanted to get the high defintion version, so I was wondering wether there is any difference.

Yes, there is. High-Def is much bigger.
If you had say something that was 1.5GB in Standard, it would be probably about 4GB in HD
