Importing FCP7 projects in FCPX 10.1.1

Hello
I just installed Mavericks and FCPX 10.1.1 on another boot drive to test if I can handle the switch to FCPX.
Is it possible to import any FCP7 projects into FCPX ?
Thought it's best to ask before trying it and messing something up. They are pretty intricate edits for professional use.
Thanks
Nick

You need to read the info from Assisted Editing, particularly "What loses something in translation" and "What gets lost in translation" Since you are exporting an XML from FCP7, there are some things in the original sequence, such as effects on clips, that may or may not make it to FCP-X.
Here is there info on what does and does not transfer:

  • Failure to import fcp7 project's xml into Premiere Pro 2014.  Details below.  Why is it crashing? Any thoughts?

Here are the details of my problem:
Premiere Pro 2014 (up to date)
Mac book Pro OSX Yosemite 10.10.1 with 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 processor
Source footage includes a variation of codecs as follows: H.264 in a .mov container, 1920 x 1080 Apple Pro Res 422, Linear PCM
There are no error messages, the import into Premiere Pro 2014 begins normally but the "progress bar" never starts and then after about 10 seconds a blank white box appears followed by the pinwheel.
When the problem occurred I was trying to import a fcp7 project's xml file into Premiere Pro.
I emailed Adobe Support Tech the fcp7 xml file and it crashed his computer, however, I was able to successfully import one clip from fcp7  (an Apple ProRes 422, Linear PCM, duration 1 minute) from the fcp 7 project into Premiere Pro, but not the whole project or the bare essentials (the cut itself).
I am not running other software
Do you have any third-party effects or codecs installed?  Not that I know of...
Tell us about your computer hardware. Be especially certain to tell us about third-party I/O hardware (e.g., AJA, Matrox, Blackmagic, MOTU). ??????
I am using Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration
The problem only happen when I try to import the FCP7 xml project file into Premiere Pro

    Hi Lynn,
Have you inspected the XML file for any anomalies? That might be a way to see if any third party effects were used.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

  • Importing FCP7 project file into premiere crashes premiere

    Hi there,
I am trying to export a fcp 7 project file as an xml file in order to import it into Premiere Pro.   Once I try importing XML into premiere it crashes the program.  I called Adobe and they say there is something wrong with my FCP project.  How can I find out how to fix it?

  • I am trying out Final Cut Pro X and trying desperately to import a project from iMovie 11 (version 9.0.9). There is no export to FCPX in iMovie 11 nor is there import from iMovie in FCPX.

    Can someone please help me?
I am trying out Final Cut Pro X on a 30 day trial. So far so good.
I am now trying desperately to import a project from iMovie 11 (version 9.0.9) into FCPX.
I have read multiple posts on this subject and they all recommend File/import/ from iMovie project in FCPX
However there is NO such option under File/import in FCPX - nor is there an option to export to FCPX in iMovie 11
    Can anyone please enlighten me.

The current version of FCPX does not work with that version of iMovie. You need version 10.0.3, which allows you to send a project to FCP.

  • I can't import final cut pro projects into FCPX after updating.

I've come back to my computer after the holidays with the newest update of FCPX and now my library and media have disapeared out of the app. I can't seem to import the project files into the program either.
    Any assistance would be appriciated.
    Regards,
    Alex

You need to update your projects and events in the File menu.

  • Is there a way to extract a sequence from an FCP7 project that crashes on opening?

I ingeniously used a Reference Quicktime to edit with in an old project, and now that that RefQT no longer works (the files it references are old, were moved/removed), the project stalls FCP7 with the rainbow pinwheel after the reconnection dialog is dismissed in any way.
My question - can I somehow get the sequence within this project out of the project and into a project that might open? Just for ***** and giggles, I tried to import the project as an EDL and it gave me a sequence, but it was blank and had an odd name.
Is there any hope? Have I just boned myself by using that RefQT in the first place? Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Just to clarify, if you attempt to launch the project that contains the corrupted sequence,  the application crashes regardless if your dismiss the Offline Files prompt by clicking either the Reconnect button or the Continue Button?
Yep. Tried Reconnecting and Dismissing both (even reconnecting to a different non-reference QT), but once it's all over, same result -- rainbow pinwheel.
If you click Continue, and the get the pinwheel, if you go to the Apple menu > Force Quit does it say "Final Cut Pro - Not Responding"?
Yep. I also tried letting it run for 5-10 minutes just to see if it would figure itself out, but to no avail.

  • Motion project to FCPX

I created a logo animation to go at the end of a commercial. how do i import this into FCPX?

Since your project is very specific to a set logo, exporting as ProRes 4444 is perfectly adequate. If you were designing a logo-style watermark or similar design, then you would want to be able to edit the text elements, and perhaps be able to change the color of the background elements from inside FCPX. In that case, you would "Publish Template" from the File menu. In the popup Publish dialog, you would check the bottom checkbox: "Publish as Final Cut Generator" -- provide a category (or select one from the Category dropdown) and give your Template a name. In FCPX, you would find it (immediately available, BTW) in the Generators > Category you saved it to.
If your final destination for Motion projects is FCPX, when you start a new project, you would select one of the available projects from the opening dialog. Normally, a "logo style" design project would be a Title project (but it doesn't necessarily have to be as a Generator is also a viable choice.) If you start your project as one of these specific types (Effect, Generator, Title or Transition) the simple act of Saving the project automatically publishes the project for use in FCPX (you have no other choice to save it anywhere else! You still need to provide the Category and a Name in the Save dialog [duh].)
If you decide to create  templates that are editable in FCPX, those parameters you would want access to in FCPX (for example things like shape colors, opacities, etc.) all you need to do is right click on the specific parameter in Motion and select Publish (if it is allowed!) from the popup menu. You can set default values for your published parameters by selecting the Project layer at the top of the layers list and then the Project pane from the inspector followed by the Publishing tab. (You can find out how to deal with "Snapshots" later on.)
It's easy to create your own custom templates with Motion.
    Have fun!

  • I have been working on a project on final cut pro trial, just purchased the real deal, but cannot find a way of importing the project

I have been working on a project on final cut pro trial, just purchased the real deal, but cannot find a way of importing the project

    You don't import the project.
I'm going to assume that both the trial version and purchased version were 10.1.
Open FCPX and then Open Library>Other, Navigate to wherever you stored the library (ies) you worked on when you used the trial. Choose that library and your work should be in one or more events in it.

  • Final Cut Pro X crashes when I try to import iMovie project?

I have a large iMovie project that I am trying to import into FCP. Every time I do (FILE -> IMPORT -> IMOVIE PROJECT) it starts to import, then crashes without warning, giving me a crash log report.
I am able to import another smaller iMovie project just fine, but the one I actually need to import doesn't work.
Both projects use video clips from the same event library.
Any ideas? Or in a backwards way, any ideas on how to recreate it in a fresh iMovie project to import into FCP? (I've tried duplicating it in iMovie and it crashed on import too).
(...I understand why there have been so many complaints about FCP now.)

Figured it out! After almost 24 hours, I cracked it
Let me give you a bit of back story...
I had an iMovie project that I had built on my Macbook. I just got a new iMac and installed FCPX on it. Was hoping to do some more professional alterations to the project.
So I consolidated the project in iMovie, copied it along with the files to an external hard drive, then transferred it over to my new machine.
Every time that I would try to import the newly copied project, it would get a few seconds in, then crash with no error message... just a crash report.
I was able to import a smaller project that used some of the same videos, so I knew that it wasn't a codec issue or something like that.
Then, through the process of trial and error, I figured out that when I had consolidated the project on my old machine, it didn't truly consolidate the files that I had used. There were a handful of still images that I had used in a different folder on my computer. So I copied that folder to the same path on my new computer, tried to import, and just like that, problem solved.
I guess FCPX doesn't know what to do when something isn't exactly where it's supposed to be. Hopefully in the next software update, they'll alert the user what the error causing it to crash is so that others don't have to waste nearly a day troubleshooting for one obvious (oops) mistake.

  • Final cut pro x importing imovie project

I have iMovie '11 and am trying out Final Cut Pro X's trial version.  Final Cut Pro X will not successfully "import iMovie Project."  Two things happen: 1) It starts the import of the iMovie Project but only reaches the point where it shows video outline in dark grey with no acual video imagery and 2) shuts down Final Cut Pro X with a follow on option to "Report, Ignore" to Apple.  I've reported it, but would like to know if anyone is having the same issue and if there is a fix.  I have just the Trial Version to see if I wish to buy, but if functions are not working properly I won't buy it.

I have the full version and I can't get iMovie '11 projects to import into FCPX.  I have tried everything I can think of.  The import progress bar starts, then it crashes.  Anyone with instructions on getting in it please help.  I am migrating stuff to my new MBP and the iMovie stuff is recognized by the iMovie on the new MBP.  The iMovie events did import into FCPX fine however.

  • How can I open FCP 7 projects in FCPX with Yosemite?

I can no longer get FCP7 to open than thus cannot export an XML file from FCP 7 to then use the 7 to X app.  Is there any other way to open old projects in FCPX? I uninstalled 7 and now cannot re-install it either, so much for THAT solving the issue!

Unless you know someone with FCP7 who can open your project (they don't need the project media to do this) and make an XML for you to convert via 7 to X, then your best bet is to get FCP7 reinstalled on your computer.
    First, read this:
Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5, Compressor 4: Installation best practices - Apple Support
Look for the topic "Installing Final Cut Studio (2009) applications when Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5, or Compressor 4 from the Mac App Store are already installed", about 3/4 of the way down the page.
If the FCS discs won't let you re-install FCP7 (it is grayed out as an option) because it thinks FCP7 is already installed, then download FCS Remover from Digital Rebellion (free) to remove the legacy traces of the installation -

  • Opening a FCP 7 project in FCPX

How can I open a FCP 7 project in FCPX to continue working on a current project with the new software?

From Apple's FAQ - "When the APIs for XML export are available, third-party developers will be able to create tools to support OMF, AAF, EDL, and other exchange formats".
In other words, "look to 3rd parties to make this happen once we update the application to support the export APIs". That's how I read that.
Perhaps some enterprising developer will see dollar signs in their eyes and produce a FCP7 project migration tool....? They'd probably sell a couple.

  • Imported from iMovie to fcpx my 1920x1080 original media now is only 720 in fcpx why?

my 1920x1080 original media now is only 720x576 in fcpx after i imported imovie evnts and project to final cut and i cant find a way to change this when i export it always export 720x576 with current but my current media is 1920x1080. reveal in finder and the media is full HD 1920. how can i let final cut pro x to see the media as it is...?
    Please help...Thanks a lot guys...

There are a number of things from Imovie that won't work properly when imported into FCPX.
There was one part of a video I needed as is so I exported from Imovie to Quicktime, then imported the clip into FCPX.
I called apple tech support, and they said yes, it is supposed to work, but doesn't.  Great.

  • Archiving FCP7 projects

We are hoping to move finished FCP7 projects off of our hard drives to free them up. What is the best way to archive the projects so that we will have full access to them in the future for possible re-editing in FCP?

We have created a project folder that has sub folders for audio, photoshop, motion gfx, project, etc.
Anything used in the edit is in this folder. If it isn't we would move it there and reconnect if neccessary.
We keep copies of any cards(entire card structure) of footage from the field in one folder and any capture scratch, transcodes etc. in another.  All of this is then cloned to a second drive so that we have two copies of everything:
project elements, shoot source, capture scratch
The important thing is to ensure is that the project is reconnected to the current location and nothing like a lone audio file, jpg, or mov file is still in some wierd place you totally forgot about.
Doing show source from the column view can help greatly with this.
Media managing is an option but you need to know how the project will need to be accessed later.
If you need every frame of every clip available for later use I wouldn't recommend MM unless you just want to copy everything in the project or sequence to a different drive.
If you only color corrected the footage in your final sequence and want any other elements in the sequence saved somewhere else I would use MM.
MM can be used for all or just a portion of your project.

    Hi
Why are you trying to import BPM zip file are you trying to configure the out of the box workflows?
They are something that need to be deployed from the process admin on BPM.
There would be the .exp file you would need as its BPM 10g that you would need to use.
