Importing, i guess

I have had iTunes on a laptop for many years and have built quite a library on it. I just got a Desktop computer and want to copy the songs over to this new machine. I do not have an ipod nor an iphone (i just use itunes to burn cd's) How can I accomplish this transfer of copies of my music files?

Probably the most straightforward way to get iTunes onto your second computer is to network it with the first one and copy your iTunes folder across. Start by consolidating your library. When you consolidate, any songs in the iTunes Library that are not in the iTunes Music Folder are copied to the Music Folder and the Library is updated to point to those new files. Files already in the iTunes Music Folder have no changes made to them: Copying all your iTunes files to one location - Windows
Copying the whole folder brings with it the iTunes Music folder and also the iTunes Library (iTunes Library.itl in Windows) database file which holds all the information about your songs (Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, Last Played, Date Added, etc). You'll get more information including the Folder/File structure in this article: What are the iTunes library files?
When you copy the iTunes folder make sure you put it into the default location on the new computer. On a PC this is \Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\ (or C:\Username\Music\ in Vista). You should also use the same version of iTunes on both computers.
You can also use this method with an external hard drive, you drag the folder from the first computer to the external drive and then from the drive to the second computer.
Once you have copied everything over hold down the Shift key in Windows when opening iTunes. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to an existing one. Navigate to where you placed the copy of the library file and open it up: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file
If you have any iTunes purchases in your library don't forget that you'll need to authorise your new computer to play them. Also if you are disposing of the old one remember to deauthorise it so you don't use up one of your allowances: About iTunes Music Store Authorisation and Deauthorisation

  • Can I move photos around in iPad?  There are some photos in camera roll, are those the ones I took with iPad?  Then there are some that are imported-I guess those are the ones from my camera.  Can I combine them into different albums?  Thanks

Can I mover photos around in iPad?  There are photos on the camera roll-are those the ones I took with iPad?  Then there are the ones labeled as imported-I guess those are the ones I took with my camera?  Can I combine pictures from both into one album?  Thanks.

At the moment no, you cannot move photos between albums in the Photos app directly on the iPad - but with iOS 5 (which will be free to download) in the Autumn, from http://www.apple.com/ios/ios5/features.html#photos :
Even organize your photos in albums — right on your device.

  • Is there a way to create a collection based on the "previous import"?

is there a way to create a collection based on the "previous import"? that would make it easy to mobile sync the last import to my ipad, and do further picking/rejecting while away from my laptop.

well, yes, of course i could do it that way. i guess i wasn't specific enough. is there a way to create a smart collection, with the photos in the "previous import" as members of the smart collection.  earlier i mentioned about using this smart collection to mobile sync with my ipad, to do further flagging.
so my intention, use a smart collection to mobile sync with my ipad, and the smart collection to include the photos from my previous import.
i guess another way to ask the question, is there a way to create a smart collection, by using some rule or condition in the smart collection, to automatically include previous import photos.
the documentation says that "previous import" is a collection, even though it shows up in the catalogue side bar section. but i see no way to choose that collection when making a smart collection.

  • Itunes freezes when importing cd's

Everytime I try to import a cd itunes freezes on track 8, 9, 10, 11, or 12. I have to force quit itunes like a dozen times before itunes quits and I can remove the cd from the drive. What is going on? Is it some setting I have? This happens on 9 out of 10 cd's. They are not very scrathed up at all. Any ideas?

Same happening here. If I have a CD which iTunes isn't happy with (presumably too scratched), iTunes just locks up. The machine won't let me bring up the force-quit dialog, nor can I easily switch to other programs (and when I do, the whole machine is really sluggish).
I'm going to switch off the audio correction option for importing -- my guess is that iTunes just gets in an infinite loop trying to read corrupt data from a CD, and slowly ends up hogging all the Mac's resources.
    What a bug!

  • I've Done it! Whoop!

    Hey everyone,
I've been having a little battle with integrating OD and AD and spent much time reading through pdf's, looking through afp584.com and of course these lovely forums. Finally I have done it and would like to share with you all just incase you are in the dark as I once was and found it difficult to get started.
Just to set the scene as it were, I am using this setup in a college environment where students will use both Mac and Windows client machines to access their work anywhere in the building so they are using mobile home directories. The AD server is for controlling the Windows workstations through Group Policy and handling user management and authentication. The OD Server (an xServe) is for storing home folder directories and providing Time Machine backups for staff laptops (as all staff use apple laptops) since they are much quicker, run a better file system an oh did I mention, THEY ROCK!
(Can you tell I'm a reformed Windows Admin?)
This is my rough step by step guide to setting the whole thing up:
    1. Setup your AD server, (mine is a win2k3 AD domain called mydomain.private. It was originally mydomain.local but this caused some difficulties with OS X so I had to delete my domain and start again!)
    2. I created 2 test users (I am using this in a college environment so one test student (we will call student!) and a test teacher (we will call teacher!)). I then created 2 groups students and teachers and added them to each group!
    3. I then set up my xServe running OS X Server 10.5.1 (upgrade to 10.5.4, this has helped no end!). I set the server up in advanced mode. I then went to Server Admin and gave my xServe the following services:
AFP - Gives the apple clients access to their home directories
SMB - Gives the windows clients access to their home directories
Open Directory - Handles authentication through Kerberos-SSO to authorize users to access their home folders
    4. I made the xServe a stand alone OD server. Then used Directory Utility to bind it to the AD server (/Applications/Utilities/Directory Utility.app).
    5. I then went back to Server Admin and to the Open Directory settings, and joined it to he Kerberos Realm. Click the "Join Realm" button, choose your domain from the drop down list "mydomain.private" and authenticate as a local admin. However, no confirmation was given to say I had joined the realm the dialogue box just disappeared?
run this command in the terminal:
    sudo klist -ke
and see your server listed three times per service it is providing, it will look like something like this:
    afpserver/[email protected] (ArfFour with HMAC/md5)
afpserver/[email protected] (DES cbc mode with CRC-32)
afpserver/[email protected] (DES cbc mode with RSA-MD5)
Also I ran another terminal command to confirm the kerberos-sso integration was working to make sure user details were being passed from the AD server to the OD server to authenticate users to use their home folders:
    dsconfigad -enable sso
That may need a "sudo" first? Now you are “Kerberised' between the OD and AD server you can promote your stand alone OD server to an OD Master! Wu-hay! Here you will have to make a Directory Administrator user (usually diradmin short name) which is separate to your Local Administrator account.
    6. Next I went into Workgroup Manager (authenticate as local admin) and connected to the local directory system, /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1 (now authenticate as diradmin). If the local LDAP directory isn't already in the list of available directories as mine wasn't, just click the globe icon and select other from the drop down list, then in the pop-up window chose LDAPv3 > 127.0.0.1 and click OK. Use the padlock on the right hand side of the workgroup manager to authenticate.
Once authenticated and working on the correct directory system (the local LDAP directory), I created two groups, "student imports" and "teacher imports" and guess what? When I went to add members, I selected the "/Active Directory/All Domains/" directory system, and added my user "student" to the "student imports" group and the other user "teacher" to the "teacher imports" group!
    7. Now go back to Server Admin, select the SMB option and go to the settings tab at the top. My server is set as a "Domain Member" and all the fields have been auto populated with the computer name, domain name and realm so we can see everything is coming together. I wont talk about the security settings those are different for everyone, you may want gust access you may not? You may want to turn off NTLM and Lan Manager and keep just NTML 2 & Kerberos on if you are using Windows XP and above workstations; or not if you have Windows 98/2000 work stations? Again this is the same for the AFP service. I have guest access turned off, and authentication set to Kerberos only because its nice and secure and most importantly, cross-platform! If at this point in time you don't know anything about kerberos drop me a line and I will send you an excellent little 10 minute movie which explains what it is and how it works.
    8. Share Points! Here we go!
Under Server Admin, select your server in the left hand pane, and choose File Sharing from the top. Again I don't want to go into what Share Points are and how to set them up, that is fairly easy and well documented. So, I created two share points, you guessed it:
    Students
    Teachers
These are both sharing over smb and afp so teachers and students can logon to either a Mac or Windows client to get their work. POSIX permissions are:
Local Admin Read & Write < Owner
Student Imports Read & Write < Group
    Others None <Other
This handles things for the Mac clients just fine. Just add one ACL for "Student Imports" for the windows clients (mine is set to “Full Control” for testing purposes then I slowly step it down as I get things set up). This is all the same for the teachers also just using the Teacher Imports group instead. Since these are home folder mounts "Enable Automount" has to be enabled. Also with the protocol options that's up to you, I have turned off all guest access, and only have afp and smb sharing turned on.
Now all you need to do is bind a test Mac and Windows machine to the domain to test your setup. With the windows machine its dead simple, just bind to the AD server and authenticate as an AD Admin account or any account that has "Domain Joining" privileges. With the Mac client, use Directory Utility to bind your Mac to the AD SERVER FIRST!!! Then the OD second. The order is important here. Read "Leveraging Active Directory on MAC OS X", it's a pdf document. As I write this the current version is 2.0, its great! It also has a generous amount of links and references to other resources at the end so after reading it and everything it references you can't go wrong! I had a previous version, 1.1 I think, which I lost, and I think it was written by Bombich? So I don't know who did version 2.0 it doesn't say but well worth a read!
Test logging in as student from you mac, save something to the home folder. Then log in as the student user on the windows machine check your mapped network drive (H:) and make sure the saved something is there, edit it for example if it were a text document. And make another. Log back in on the mac again. Make sure the file changes have been saved and you can see them, and you can see and edit the new file. This will confirm there aren't any cross-platform and share point permission issues.
N.B. I have used workgroup manager to set users home directories on the xServe. Open WGM and authenticate to the AD Directory. Select your user and set their home folder to the appropriate share point, an example would be:
    smb://myXserve.mydoamin.private/students/student
Under active directory this will show up in the user account as a mapped network drive (assigned the letter H: by default). I have used group policy management console to make "My Documents" a shortcut/redirect to the users H: drive when they log on!
When things start going wrong, fire up the Console app on the OS X server, Console is your friend! I can not lie, it can only point you in the right direction by showing what's wrong! Also these forums are great and just google google google!
I hope this has helped some how. Feel free to ask about something I have written, I will answer the best I can but I am new to Mac Administration. I only have one other server that is a 10.4.11 server running as a OD Master on its own.
Search the forums, google everything, check afp548.com, bombich.com etc. Get all the apple server administration pdfs. The information for this is out there, its just scattered around and needs piecing together for your particular requirements.
Thanks to everyone that help me, I can't mention you all, it was over many 'a forum post to which many people have replied. If you have ever replied to a post I have started, thanks!

I found this post on linux forums which say It's a HAL related problem.
"rmmod ehci_hcd" made it work for some of these guys Which one of them explains It's a data speed issue. Cables.., 2.0 1.0, that sort of things. Read it, I bet you'll get more out of it, It's old though.
Try removing the module, plugging the drive, check dmesg, and mount manually.

  • 12-Core Mac Pro w/ 32GB of RAM and FCPX is S..L...O...W....

This is annoying.  I'm trying to cut a feature film on this.  On a two week old Mac Pro.  12-Core Mac w/ 32GB of RAM.  It's becoming a liability and I'm starting to think I made the wrong choice going with Apple and Final Cut Pro X BOTH.  The amount of time this software is adding to MY life timeline is ridiculous.  I'm only running FCPX.  No other programs.  And anyhow, I should have enough RAM to run more than that w/o these problems.
A feature film means I have 400GBs of clips in the Event.  This is a real life situation and a editing program needs to be able to handle that.  All the media ia on a different internal 7200RPM drive that isn't running the OS.
Renaming a clip in the Event Library is slow.  Adding scene and other information to a clip is slow.  Processing after importing a clip from tape is slow.
I just imported 10 clips ranging from 30 secs to 3 minutes in length.  They are SD from a DVX100 tape.  Not even talking HD here.  It's supposed to be analyzing in the background but the rainbow ball spinning constantly and allowing me only enough time to click something once before it spins again isn't "processing in the back grond" in my opinion.
I bought the best so that I wouldn't have to deal with garbage like this.
I haven't even started editing yet.  I understand this is first gen of a new revamp so it's going to be buggy and crash on occassion.  I know what I signed up for.  but these are basic tasks.  I can't even imagine how performance would be with hi res stuff.
So my question is: What the heck is the deal here?  Does Apple check up on these discussions?  When will I get a professional level program that actually utilizes the tools I have running under the hood?

Just to update everyone reading this thread.  I have begun to cut a teaser trailer for the film (ThereAreNoGoodbyes.com if you're interested!) to premiere at a film festival next week and the editing process has gone smoothly.  Editing itself appears to be fine thus far.  Although im dealing with a very short project runtime at this point (90 seconds).
At this point it appears the major issues are with importing, transcoding, and analyzing.  all headaches and much more time consuming than i have had experience with in the past (on other NLEs).  my assumption is maybe it's the "analyzing" thats the main problem here.  for my personal curiousity i wanted to see what FCPX came back with in the a/v diagnosis, but if i turned all of those things off on import (just guessing here) perhaps the process would have been much faster.
whatever the case may be it should NOT be advertised as something that can be done in the background until that's an actual fact.
after this trailer is finished (this week) i will start working on the assembly cut of the film which will clock at anywhere from 90 minutes to 2 hours and then ill get a better idea if FCPX can handle what id consider to be a normal-sized project.  I'll post back here with my impressions...
side note: i had to do some basic effects in Motion on some footage and that was smooth and painless working within Motion and coming back to FCPX with the footage.

  • Speakers are not recognized while in OSX 10.7.3 can't restart without power button (don't know if they are related)

I am willing to split up the two symptoms if they are not related. But I know the speakers aren't broken because I hear the Bong noise at boot, but to my misfortune I made the mistake of deleting something (important I guess) in the Audio Midi Setup (Audio Devices window). I was trying to figure out how to split audio tracks between my headphones and speakers so I could listen to music in one ear while skyping (sounds stupid I know, but I stay on Skype with a long distance coworker most of the day). I guess some 17 hours ago when the failure happened I found on Google that there were sound settings in the Audio Midi Setup and had the great idea to go clicking around in there. Somehow deleted the black option thing (only got a quick look) when my computer lagged and then no more sound... I've been trying to fix it with stuff I found on google but I think I made it worse because now my macbook hangs on a black screen during the shutdown process when I choose to restart from the Apple Menu up there in the top left of my screen. I'm out of Ideas, I've tried clearing P & V rams or whatever several times and gone through almost every post on these forums and google that I can find that have any words relevant to what is the problem. After 15 hours of trying on my own I thought I'd ask for help.
Any additional info I can provide let me know please.
    Thank you.

I started having connectivity issues to my 10.6.8 server from my 10.7 client immediately after updating the client to 10.7.3. FWIW. Takes forever to connect, when it does. After just milliconds before.

  • Images as visualizer

Is there a plugin anyone knows of, or a technique that will allow the iTunes visualizer to run a folder of images in a slideshow. Just sort of curious, I know there are numerous otherways I could get the same effect.
    tim

there is an app called G-Force - it's really good. it enhances the built-in visualizer - the built-in one is getting close, IMO, but G-Force is the best I've ever seen.
most important I guess: at least in an older version I have on an iMac, you can fully customize it (run it "stand-alone" to respond to other sound, for instance), including the Slide Show thing you asked about. This will not only show photos now and then, but will show Quicktime movies amongst the psychedelia as well.
    peace.

  • LR 5.2 and macBook, air or pro?

    Hi,
I am considering buying a macBook to use for images using LR, some video too (don't know which software I will use yet).
Is macBook Air good enough or should I go for the macBook Pro? I am looking at the 13" models, but I also have an eye for the 15" models too if the 13" models is not good enough.
Is the retina display necessary, is that only for the little extra?  I am considering getting an extra monitor too, which means retina is not really important I guess.
    - Terje

The 13" Pro has a more powerful processor than the Air, which will be beneficial for the Develop module, exports, preview rendering, etc. and certainly for your video editing.
Having used the Retina display for nearly a year, my 'normal' screens appear really fuzzy now.  I'd miss it if I had to go back to a standard screen.

  • ITUNES causes my pc to shut down

Whenever Itunes is running no matter what I'm doing, my computer shuts down and I uploaded the newest version and it still does it. Anyone out there able to help me figure it out? It is VERY annoying.
    Thank you

    hi amuzer!
I run spyware and anti-virus frequently. I'm now removing a lot of music from the pc. My pc likes to shut down now even when itunes isn't running at the time. Oh well, I figure it out eventually.
hmmmm. are you getting any sort of blue screen with that shutdown? if so, what sorts of of numerical and text codes are you getting? (ie: 0x[thingy] CAPSANDUNDERSCORES.) here's a reference on the sorts of things i'm asking about:
    Troubleshooting Windows Stop Messages
if you're not getting any blue screens, and the PC is just behaving like someone has switched off the power, it may be worth checking the power supply on that PC. i've seen a few reports where the first sign of a dying power supply on a PC was that the PC would switch itself off during a CD import. (my guess there is that the spike in power consumption as the CD drive spins up is enough to kick the power supply over the edge. if the power supply was close enough to the edge, i guess other things could also provoke a power-off.)
other things to check on with switch-offs-without-blue-screens include whether or not the PC is overheating.
can anyone recommend a good freeware hardware diagnostics program for amuzer, that could pick up on these sorts of things?
    love, b

  • Port configuration of a server application on linux

    Hello,
I am developing a server application. I am using Eclipse as the development environment. I am working on Linux Fedora 1.5. And as servlet container I am using Apache-Tomcat 5.5.
When I run my project on the server with default values it works fine. Here is the address I am using:
    http://localhost:8080/ProjectName/ServletName
However, I want my project to work on port 80.
First of all, in order to make this modification do I need to have root rights?
I configured project settings on Eclipse so that the application later will listen to requests on port 80. But somehow it didn't work. I am wondering if I am missing sth or not. Can someone share his/her experience with me pls..?
    Thanks & Regards

    Hi!
Thank a lot for the answer. I solved the problem. Eclipse said that the port 80 is already in use, so I concantrated on this. However, i tried to run the tomcat server as root (in linux) and it worked at this time. The problem was usage right. nothing was running on port 80 actually, but I couldn't understand why Eclipse said so.
And the command 'lsof -i :80'. I don't know this command. I tried to run it but I got a command not found error. I tried both as normal user and root. Did you write a letter wrong in this command..? Or am I doing sth wrong here? Why didn't it work out? Since I am not that good in linux, I would like to learn this command. Sth very important I guess..
    Thanks & Regards

  • Did iTunes damage my files?

I've started to discover that some files in my iTunes library are damaged. In some songs you can hear sudden noises, crackling "white noise". I listen mostly to ALAC, so at the moment it's only ALAC files I've found to be damaged, if it also applies to MP3, I don't know.
It's mainly songs I ripped myself from CDs (with XLD, Max, and iTunes), although some files are converted from FLAC (with XLD).
I've never had this problem before, but after a hard drive crash I had to re-rip all my CDs (400+), after which I've discovered more and more corrupted files.
I don't know if they were damage during the import process in iTunes, or if it occurred in connection with an update of iTunes/library update.
As the files were created by three different programs (but mainly XLD), I can only see that iTunes caused the damage.
Is there anyone else that heard of similar issues?

Well the HDD crashed completely, I had to throw it away, so not a single ALAC file in my library is from that crashed disk (the MP3's I had a backup of).
So iTunes does not change anything in the files during import, I guess it's only the library files that are updated then? If so I can rule out the import process causing the issue.
Then it might be as you say, this happend during tag updates. Neverless, this is really annoying, I have 400+ ripped albums, not knowing how many of all those songs that are damaged....
Albums I add to iTunes now doesn't have any issues (so far), so whatever mean bug who did this seem to be killed off...

  • New library gutted by rebuild

I imported about 10,000 photos into a more or less pristine iPhoto ’09 library (managed, not referenced) over the course of the day. I dragged each of several hundred folders to iPhoto one at a time. I tested the library and all photos seemed to be accounted for. I played with it for long enough to feel that all was working as expected, then backed the library up, and rebuilt as a general preventative measure — if there were any database hiccoughs in importing, best to nip them in the bud. If there weren’t, it should be harmless. Right?
But after rebuild, thousands of photos went missing, seemingly at random. By “missing” I mean simply gone without a trace from the iPhoto interface, yet still present in the iPhoto library package. For instance, of 4000 pictures from a single large event, only 600 remained. The backed up (pre-rebuild) library still had them, and they were easy to find. But the rebuilt library was gutted.
Does anyone have any insights into why this would occur or how to solve it? I find it disturbing to think that I cannot use iPhoto’s built-in recovery features without potentially causing serious damage with no error messages.

First off, I’m glad the back up is working for you.
Thanks! But I’m afraid I don’t trust it at all under the circumstances.
I didn’t say importing, I guessed indexing going on in the background.
Ah. Well, same diff — it was well and truly done doing anything before I backed up and rebuilt.
Did you do this rebuild on the Back Up library too?
No, nor have I attempted another rebuild on any copy. The backup was to save me in case of exactly the kind of disaster that occurred — as iPhoto suggests when you tell it to rebuild a library.
You might have wondered why I rebuilt in the first place. I left this detail out of the original post. I wrote that all seemed basically well with the library before I backed up and rebuilt, but that’s not entirely true. I was provoked to rebuild by some misbehaviour. Although all photos were present and accounted for as far as I could tell, and everything seemed to be working, I did observe some problems with selection counting. I could reproduce the problem at will: if I displayed an event, say, containing 500 photos, and then selected all of them, iPhoto would report a wildly incorrect number of selected photos, about 1000-1500. The incorrect number would reappear consistently upon de-then-re-selecting. However, operations performed on the selected photos (i.e. keyword assignment) seemed to go fine, so I chalked it up to an indicator error — probably nothing wrong except the number.
But I thought it was a cause to rebuild.
And then the rebuild created serious problems!

  • Sort by badges

Is there a way to sort images by their badge types? or at least easily identify all images that have the same badge? For example I have a lot of images where the meta data has been modified by another application. Instead of selecting each one and telling LR to overwrite the metadata, I'd like to do it in a batch.
Another problem is that all of sudden I have a lot of preview images that are duplicates. One is attached to a raw file and the second one (an identical preview of the attached one) is sitting next to it with a ? badge on it. Of course LR says it can't open it because it can't find the original image.
    I'd like to:
1- Find all previews with missing file
2- Select all and delete them
    Any suggestion?
    Thank you in advance.
PS. I use LR 1.3.1 on a Quad Mac G5 power PC

Here is the suggestion I made in my own feedback to Apple Developers:
The sortings by Date Created or Date Modified are useful only for files I created myself.
Files created by others need another option in "Arrange By":
    "Arrange by Date Imported"
I guess should do it, but perhaps it would work better with
    "Arrange by Date Copied"
    "Arrange by Date Downloaded"
    kinds of options?
Also: When I change a folder name, it is not taken into account as a "modification".
    So,
is it that we would need ALSO a
    "Arrange by Date Renamed"
    category?
Or is it the way "Modify" works that is wrong?
    Thanks a lot in advance.
You could sent this kind of suggestion, in a better English (mine is awful, I know)
